Norma Stauffer
Norma Stauffer, 95, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, in the home of her daughter in Bellefontaine.
The former Harrod resident was born Aug. 12, 1906, in Auglaize County, a daughter of George and Pearl Baggs Lane. On Aug. 31, 1931, she married Mack A. Stauffer, who passed away July 19, 1972.
She was a homemaker and member of the First English Lutheran Church of Bluffton and the New Hampshire Garden Club. She enjoyed working in her yard and was well-known for the rag rugs she made by hand.
Survivors include four sons, Mack "Mick" (Amelia) Stauffer of Ada, William "Bill" (Barbara) Stauffer of Wapakoneta, Norman "Butch" (Karen) Stauffer of
Waynesfield and Gregory "Randy" (Brenda) Stauffer of Harrod; three daughters, Barbara (Paul) Bowsher of Harrod, Susan (Stephen) Jones of Bellefontaine and Jane Wood of Urbana; and one sister, Joann Robinson of
Waynesfield.
Also surviving are 34 grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, 20 great-stepgrandchildren, two
great-great-grandchildren and six great-great- stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Larry; one son-in-law, Richard Wood; five brothers, Dalton "Tom," Frayne "Jim," Dallas "Boots," George "Jr.," and
Wayne Lane; four sisters, Betty Andrews, Iona Foulk, Halsie Reichelderfer and Mary Jane Lane; and three great-grandchildren
Roger L. Allison
Roger L. Allison, 65, of Huntsville, died at 10:26 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Logan Acres.
He was born in DeGraff on Sept. 20, 1936, a son of the late Charles M. and Mabel M. Easton Allison.
On Oct. 20, 1957, he married the former Barbara E. Knief and she survives.
The 1954 graduate of DeGraff High School was retired from Honda of America Mfg., Marysville, after 16 years of service. He was also employed by Fuson's IGA in DeGraff and Sprague's IGA and Airstream Inc., both in Jackson Center.
He was a member of the Huntsville United Presbyterian Church and Boggs Lodge 292 Free and Accepted Masons in DeGraff.
e was formerly a member of the Jackson Center Lodge 458 F&AM.
Along with his wife, he is survived by three sons, Keith (Jennifer) Allison of Bellefontaine, Kevin (Kathy) Allison of Huntsville and Kent (Michele) Allison of Jackson Center; six grandchildren, Kory, Kara, Kelsey, Zachary, Derek and Avery; four sisters, Bertha (Gail) Curl, Esther Black and Doris (Larry) Neff, all of Bellefontaine and Florence Stickland of Urbana; two brothers, Russell (Maxine) Allison and Melvin (Evelyn) Allison, both of Bellefontaine; and many nieces and nephews.
Joseph Edwin Appelfeller
Joseph Edwin Appelfeller, 81, of LaRue, died at 5:47 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Marion General Hospital, Marion.
He was born in Mt. Victory on Aug. 13, 1920, a son of the late Frank and Anna Martino Appelfeller.
On Nov. 24, 1951, he married the former Mary E. Benson and she survives.
A 1938 graduate of Mt. Victory High School, he was a retired sales representative for the Rose Chemical Company. He served on the Marion County Republican Central Committee.
The U.S. Marine Corps veteran served in World War II and Korea before retiring from the USMC Reserve as a major. He was a member of the Phillipi-Clement Post 101 of the American Legion in LaRue, Veterans of Foreign Wars 870 of Richwood, the Reserve Officers Association, the Marine Corps Officers Association, the Marine Corps Association and the Navy League
of the U.S. and the China Marines.
Along with his wife, he is survived by three sons, John J. Appelfeller of Fort Worth, Texas, Mark B. Appelfeller of Louisville, Colo. and Matthew J. Appelfeller of LaRue; two daughters, Julie A. (William P.) Gracely of Marion and Marna J. (David L.) Salmons of Bellefontaine; a sister, June E. (Robert) Jones of Bellefontaine; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry L. and Raymond L. Appelfeller; and two sisters, Marjorie M. Keller and Myra J. Quelette.
Wayne Allen Blankenship
Wayne Allen Blankenship, 85, of Sandy Hook, Ky., and formerly of Logan County, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the Kingšs Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, Ky.
Born April 4, 1916, in Lawrence County, Ky., he was a son of the late William Arthur and Nettie Blankenship.
Also preceding him in death were his wife, Dora Blankenship; and one son, Charles S. Blankenship.
He was a farmer and believer of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne D. and William Arthur Blankenship, both of Bruin, Ky.; two daughters, Glenda Lee Carpenter of Springfield and Ruth B. Ison of Bruin; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Blankenship of Louisa, Ky.; and one sister, Agnes Bradley of Louisa.
Martha Gene Phelps Lewis
Martha Gene Phelps Lewis, 67, of Jacksonville, Fla., died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in her home.
She was born in Milford Center on Nov. 17, 1934, a daughter of the late Gene and Irene Kelly Phelps. She was reared in the home of her mother and stepfather, the late Harry P. Prater, in West Liberty.
A 1951 graduate of West Liberty High School, she resided in Florida for many years and was married to Doward Lewis, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Michael Lewis, Mark Lewis and Randy Lewis, all of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three half-sisters, Linda (Merlyn) Peters of West Liberty, Patricia Rosezella (James) Shaw of Urbana and Elizabeth (Patrick) DeMoss of Dunnellon, Fla.
Phyllis I. Linebaugh
Phyllis I. Linebaugh, 69, of Russells Point, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in her home.
Born Feb. 13, 1932, in Springfield, she was the daughter of the late William and Olive Pitzer.
On June 9, 1962, she married Richard C. Linebaugh, who survives along with one daughter, Judy Wilson of Sidney; one son, David Hennesey of Russells Point; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Mark Hennesey; and one brother, Daniel Pitzer.
Merle L. Beer
Merle L. Beer, 77, of Bellefontaine, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, in Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton.
He was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Bellefontaine, a son of Louis Ivan and Lena Mattie Houchin Beer. He was married to Dolores Lee Hoon Beer, who survives.
Mr. Beer was a barber until August 2001. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion Post 173, Elks Lodge 132, Bellefontaine Lodge 209 F&AM, Lafayette Chapter 60 RAM, Logan 85 R&SM, Commandry 61 KT, Scottish Rite Antioch Temple in Dayton, Bellefontaine Chapter 459 OES and a life member of Eagles 2166.
Other survivors include two sons and their wives, Dennis Lee (Dianna) Beer of Wingina, Va., and William Michael (Shelly) Hoon of Bellefontaine; six grandchildren, Scott and Bill Hoon, Terry, Darin and Eric Beer and Nicole de Bary; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William Beer.
Martha Madeleine Ufheil Laeufer
Martha Madeleine Ufheil Laeufer, 94, of Lima, died at 5:50 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Springview Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Laeufer was born in Continental on May 18, 1907, a daughter of the late Henry Clay and Myrtle Shively Ufheil.
She married Bernard Walter Laeufer in Lima on Feb. 20, 1929, and he preceded her in death.
A homemaker, Mrs. Laeufer was a well known poetess and author of Poems of the Heart and other Places. She also was a member of the Christ Church Episcopal.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Laeufer Basinger of Lima and Martha (Gary) Laeufer Carmean of Bellefontaine; four grandchildren, Eric B. Laeufer of Columbus, Katherine Laeufer Welsh of Columbus, Anne Carmean Arnold of Tiffin and Erin Carmean of Columbus; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Barney J. Laeufer; one daughter-in-law, Diana Laeufer; and one son-in-law, Tag Basinger.
John W. Bishop
John W. Bishop, 92, of Kenton, died at 5:35 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Ravenwood Care Center, Kenton.
He was born in Centerburg on April 1, 1909, a son of the late Carl S. and Cora D. Sipe Bishop.
On May 4, 1932, he married the former Iva B. Rice. They later divorced and she survives. He married Mabel Wallace in Portland, Texas, in December 1981 and she preceded him in death Feb. 14, 2000.
He also is survived by six daughters, Donna (Robert) Yelton of Bellefontaine, Shirley (Gary) Wellmeier of Urbana, Betty (William) Hartley of DeGraff, Martha (William) Pence of Maplewood, Linda (John) Jones of Belleview, Fla., and Joy (Jerry) Arnett of Quincy; one son, John (Chris) Bishop of Richwood; one sister, Phoeby Spangler of Florida; 29 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Georgeanne (Ron) Collett of Kenton; and two stepsons, Howard A. (Cindy) Johnston of Bellefontaine and James (Lou) Johnston of Hamilton; seven stepgrandchildren and seven great-stepgrandchildren.
Mary A. Wickerham
Mary A. Wickerham, 96, formerly of Springfield, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Wayne Hospital, Greenville.
She was born in Oscoda County, Mich., on March 28, 1905, a daughter of Christian and Kate Marner Kauffman.
She had been a resident of the Brethren Home and a member of the Greenville Church of the Brethren since 1987.
She is survived by one son, David M. Wickerham of Bellefontaine; one daughter, Zelma L. (Paul) Carter of Sabina; one sister, Stella Binkele of Goshen, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Perry Allison, David Wickerham II, Dana Wickerham, Dawn Scott, Jeff Hendricks, John Wickerham and Lezleigh Wilhelm; one great-grandson; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Cecil K. Wickerham; one son, Richard E. Wickerham; one grandson, Gene Allison; four brothers; and one sister preceded her in death.
