Elizabeth Hughes
Elizabeth "Libby" Hughes, 82, of Lima, died at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hughes was born March 18, 1918, in Lima, the daughter of Russell and Hazel Hanna Nichols.
She was married to Allen Hughes, who preceded her in death Nov. 17, 1996.
Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker.
She is survived by one son, Dick (Mary Lou) Camper of Lakeview; one daughter, Janet Point of Lima; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathryn Brentlinger and Alta Lora.
Lewis "J.T." Miller
Lewis "J.T." Miller, 62, of Lakeview, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at St. Johns.
He was born July 27, 1938, in Russells Point, a son of Frederic R. and Vada Archer Miller. He married Mary Jane Hooper on March 21, 1995 and she survives.
Mr. Miller was a construction worker and an avid citizen band radio operator.
Other survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Mary Lou and Edgle Francis of Sidney and Diana and Carl Walti of Cridersville; a son, Mickey Miller of Russells Point; a step-daughter, Jessica Craig, at home; and eight grandchildren, Tara, Kara, Elizabeth, Ashli, Chad, Justin, Cody and Ciera.
Hiram VanHoose
Hiram VanHoose, 76, of Springfield, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at his residence.
He was born July 19, 1924, in Woodstock, a son of Garfield and Asby Davis VanHoose.
Mr. VanHoose worked for Urbana Tool & Die and later retired as a tool and die maker with Yost-Superior. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. VanHoose was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Carl and Okie Blankenship, and Arby and Martin Van Hoose; and two sisters, Mary Ohler and Burdie Woodworth.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Hazel Lehman VanHoose, whom he married July 11, 1947; two daughters and one son-in-law, Marsha Kilgore of Springfield and Pam and John Stemble of Lewistown; one brother, Raymond VanHoose of Urbana; four grandchildren, Cheryl Dean, Mark Kilgore, Charity Pelfrey and Christa Adkins; four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Ralph L. Wisener
Ralph L. Wisener, 80, of Huntsville, died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Heartland of Indian Lake.
He was born May 8, 1920, in Lima, the son of Ora and Olla Ballinger Wisener.
Mr. Wisener was retired from farming and Superior Coach in Lima.
He is survived by three daughters, Paula (Gale) Klausing of Van Wert, Janice (Howard) Dittmar of Cave Rock, Ill., and Carol (Ray) Russell of St. Matthews, S.C.; one son, Daniel M. Wisener of Huntsville; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, David Wisener.
Lucile E. Shroyer
Lucile E. Shroyer, 83, of DeGraff, died at 7:31 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
She was born April 12, 1917, in Monroe Township to the late Samuel K. and Lillie Belle Stallsmith Lovett.
She married Earnest J. Shroyer on Sept. 6, 1942. He preceded her in death June 22, 1988.
She was currently employed at Peck's Jewelers in Bellefontaine where she has worked since 1960. She formerly worked in the Agriculture Conservation Office in Bellefontaine.
Mrs. Shroyer was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Jackson Center, Women of the Church since 1943, 4-H Leader, Charter Member of the Logan County Agarian Club and Novem Bridge Club since 1943.
She is survived by one daughter, Kandy (Richard) Norton of DeGraff; two sons, Larry E. (Anne) Shroyer and Eric L. (Judy) Shroyer, both of DeGraff; eight grandchildren, Beth Overs, Laura Shroyer, John Shroyer, Scott Shroyer, Jodi Deardurff, Angie Knapp, Mary Davis and Sarah Elliott; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Erma Shultz of Bellefontaine; two brothers, Dwight (Wilma) Lovett and Ralph (Clarabelle) Lovett, both of Bellefontaine; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Eric Todd Shroyer; one son-in-law, Virgil W. Wright; four sisters and two brothers.
Miriam L. Willeke
Miriam L. Willeke, 72, of Ada, died at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay.
She was born Nov. 21, 1928, in Hancock County to the late John Kenneth and Mabel Lucille Montgomery Dearth. Her mother survives in Ada.
She married Orland C. Willeke on Aug. 5, 1945. He survives in Ada.
Mrs. Willeke was a homemaker and a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dola and The Women of the Church.
Along with her mother and husband she is survived by one son, Kevin (Connie) Willeke of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Charlotte (Larry) Brown of Bluffton, Jeanette (Larry) Lambert of Bellefontaine and Carla (Joe) Meek of Columbus, Ind.; two brothers, Dean (Sarah) Dearth of Ada and Russell (Gloria) Dearth of Farmington, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Dearth.
William Willis Kerns
William Willis Kerns, 84, of Houston, Texas, formerly of North Lewisburg, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001.
He was born in Union County on March 6, 1916, a son of the late Casper and Leota Willis Kerns.
He lived most of his life in North Lewisburg before moving to Virginia in 1990 and to Houston in 1996. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a long-time employee of North American Rockwell in Columbus.
He is survived by his son, Dr. William J. (Sena) Kerns of Houston; daughter, Dyna (Harold) Wilson of Reston, Va.; six grandchildren, Nora, Nancy, and Karen Kerns of Houston and Shannon, Megan and Erin Wilson of Reston; and a sister, Gladys Steiner of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Mildred Creviston Kerns on Nov. 25, 1997. They were married in Richmond, Ind., on May 22, 1937.
P. Richard "Dick" Pickering
P. Richard "Dick" Pickering, 77, of Kenton, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Hardin Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 30, 1923, in Hardin County to Pearl A. and Dorothy Newbold Pickering.
He married Phyllis McCall on March 11, 1944, in Lancaster. She preceded him in death on March 1, 1991.
Mr. Pickering was a farmer and was retired from the post office in Belle Center. He graduated from Kenton High School in 1941.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kenton, the church choir, the Latham Masonic Lodge 154, the 32nd degree Mason-Valley of Columbus, the Elks Lodge 157 and the Kenton Men's Garden Club where he was president the past year. He was also a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy Air Corps.
He is survived by two daughters, Judi (James) Candler of Ridgeway and Terri (Tony) Boyle of East Tawas, Mich.; three grandchildren and one sister, Berry McCune of Forest.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Woods and his step-mother June Pickering.
Betty Ross Rooney
Betty Ross Rooney, 75, of 760 N. Main St., Urbana, died at 10:39 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in Mercy McAuley Center in Urbana.
Mrs. Rooney was born Nov. 13, 1925, in Champaign County, the daughter of Charles and Mary Lockwood Ross.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Rooney is survived by one daughter, Susan Rooney; one sister, Alice (Jay) Underwood; one brother, Richard (Mary Ann) Ross; and one aunt, Hildred LaRue, all of Urbana; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Rooney on May 2, 1991; and a brother, Robert Ross.
Eleanor Kathryn Spires
Eleanor Kathryn Spires, 79, of Largo, Fla., passed away in her home Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001. She was born in Walnut Grove in Logan County.
She was married to William R. Spires, a Hillsborough County, Fla., educator who survives.
Mrs. Spires was a professional educator and musician, having been a self-employed music teacher and band director in Wapakoneta before moving to Florida.
She was a member of the St. Jerome Catholic Church in Largo, the Questors Club, the P.E.O. Sorority and a former member of the Ivory Club. Mrs. Spires was president of the Belleair Women's Republican Club and a former president of Suncoasters Inc. of Pinellas County, Fla.
She is also survived by one son, Martin M. Brands of Destin, Fla.; three daughters, Dr. Nancy Wright of Colorado Springs, Colo., Norma J. (Andrew) Wanek of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Carolyn J. (Michael) Radtke of Cresent City, Fla.; six grandchildren, Kelly, C.J. and Craig Brands, all of Texas, Molly K. and Matthew Radtke of Cresent City, Fla. and Shane Wanek of Seminole, Fla.; and one great-grandchild, Blake Martin Brands of Texas.
