Robert L. Murphy
Robert L. Murphy, 55, of 7248 State Route 117, Huntsville, died at 5:40 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at his residence.
He was born in Bell County, Ky., on April 5, 1946, a son of James A. Murphy of Bellefontaine and the late Virgie Whitehead Murphy, who died in 1999.
Mr. Murphy and his wife, Angela M., were married in Huntsville on Aug. 24, 2001, and she survives.
He was owner of the R.L. Murphy Company and operated dump trucks.
Also surviving are one son, James L. Murphy of Akron; one daughter, Melissa M. Deutsch of Kent; one stepdaughter, Greta Joe Murphy of Paintsville, Ky.; one brother, Forester Murphy of Bellefontaine; special friends, Jennifer and Jill Wittine and David Rostorfer; and three grandchildren, Morgan August Isabella, Murphy Tyler Deutsch and Michael Wayne Warren.
Ethel Marie Comer
Ethel Marie Comer, 84, of 210 N. Boggs St., DeGraff, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at the Ohio Masonic Home, Springfield.
She was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Pleasant Township, Logan County, a daughter of the late Raymond E. and Hazel Stottlemyer Black.
On April 4, 1937, in Quincy, she married Jesse Raymond Comer. He died Nov. 23, 1965.
A graduate of Quincy High School, she was a member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church. Mrs. Comer was a past member of the former Constance Chapter 78, Order of the Eastern Star, DeGraff, and serve the chapter as a worthy matron and secretary for many years. She also belonged to the Constance Chapter Past Matrons Circle and was a current member of the Sarah Elizabeth Chapter 335 OES, West Liberty. Mrs. Comer was an active member of the Logan County Friendly Senior Center and was an avid sports fan.
A homemaker, she retired as clerk treasurer of the Riverside Board of Education in 1973. Mrs. Comer also was a cook for the school district from several years and worked at the G.C. Murphy store in Bellefontaine at one time.
Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Janet and Richard McIntosh of London and Janice and Tony Van Der Vaart of Bowling Green, Ky.; two sons and their spouses, Larry A. and Marilyn Comer of DeGraff and Jerry B. and Teresa Comer of Strongsville; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are six sisters and their spouses, Anita Lane of Covina, Calif., Pearl Bertolet of Adelanto, Calif., Marguerite Comer and Dorothy and Charles Roby, all of DeGraff, Lucille and John Roby of Quincy and Hazel and Howard Crouch of Huntingdon, Pa.
One grandson is deceased.
Margery T. Hurley
Margery T. Hurley, 89, of Huntsville, died at 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
A native of Hardin County, she was born April 27, 1912, a daughter of the late Joseph B. and Bertha M. Alloway Jenkins.
She married Tira M. Hurley on June 30, 1937, and he preceded her in death Dec. 31, 1993.
Mrs. Hurley was a homemaker and member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Richard E. Hurley of Huntsville; and several nieces and nephews.
One sister, Nova Shepard, is deceased.
Viletta Kearns
Viletta Kearns, 93, of Belle Center, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 10, 2001, at her residence.
She was born March 2, 1908, in Hardin County, a daughter of Earnest and Sarah "Sadie" Dubbs Stevenson.
She married Foster Kearns in November 1932, and he preceded her in death in 1984.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn (Robert) Williams of Kenton; three sons, Kenneth (Martha) Kearns of Belle Center, Ronald Kearns and his friend Jean Payton of Bowling Green and Edwin "Joe" (Carol Jean) Kearn of Kenton; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
One brother, Ozro Kearns, is deceased.
An elementary school teacher, Mrs. Kearns retired after 32 years in the profession. She first taught in Foraker then at Hepburn School where she also was principal. She taught at Hardin Central Elementary in Kenton until she retired in June 1974.
Mrs. Kearns attended Bowling Green State University and was a member of the Hardin County and Ohio Retired Teachers Associations. She also was a member of the Kenton Business and Professional Women's Club.
Myra L. Miller
Myra L. Miller, 59, of Lakeview, died at 9:55 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at her home.
Born in Logan County on Nov. 5, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Myron and Lula Clay Davis.
Ms. Miller was a custodian at the Indian Lake Middle School for 18 years. She retired in 2000.
A graduate of Jackson Center High School, she was a member of the Indian Lake Community Church in Russells Point and the Doyle R. Miller AMVETS Post 39, Auxiliary, Lakeview. She was active in the Indian Lake Athletic Boosters and Emil Davis Park.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda (Bob) Stephan of Indianapolis; one son, Jeff Miller of Lakeview; one grandson, Alex Stephan; two sisters, Luella Berling of Winter Park, Fla., and Patricia (Eber) Opdyke of Zanesville; and two brothers, Leland (Gertrude) Davis of California and Ralph Davis of New Castle, Ind.
One brother, Loyal Davis, is deceased.
Don E. Mitchell
Don E. Mitchell, 78, of Lakeview, died at 3 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, in Heartland of Indian Lake rehab, Lakeview.
Born on July 15, 1923, in New London, he was a son of the late Milburn M. and Alice May Dignan Mitchell. He married Chelsia Riley on March 21, 1985, and she survives.
A maintenance foreman at Westinghouse electrical in Bellefontaine for 36 years, he was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and he was a member of Doyle R. Miller AMVETS Post 39, Lakeview, and Harold Kerr Post 173 American Legion.
Also surviving are a son, Ernest A. Mitchell of Lakeview; three granddaughters, Holly (Rick) Powers and Danielle (Steve) Bunke, both of Jackson Center and Ginger (Ron) Kimmel of Huntsville; a grandson, Wesley A. Mitchell of Toluca Lake, Calif.; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosalyn (Ellis) Cook of New London.
Six brothers preceded him in death.
Roland R. Young
Roland R. "Red" Young, 71, of West Liberty, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Logan Acres. He was born April 6, 1920, a son of Raymond S. and Doris Williams Young.
A U.S. Army veteran of the 813th Engineer Aviation Battalion Company A during World War II, he was a member of Harold Kerr Post 173, American Legion. He also held membership in the Dayton Brick Layers Union 22.
Mr. Young is survived by his wife of 15 years, Phyllis Young of West Liberty; one son and his wife, Charles W. and Diane Young of Urbana; two sisters, Ruth Grant and Margie Thompson, both of Bellefontaine; and one grandson, Todd Young of Bowling Green.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Amelia, in 1982. Two sisters, Gaynell Albert and Wanda Painter, are also deceased.
Herman Eugene Eaton
Herman Eugene Eaton, 49, of Middleburg, died at 8:47 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus.
Born May 4, 1952, in Bellefontaine, he was a son of the late John and Gertrude Filkins Eaton.
On Dec. 27, 1976, in Urbana, he married Sherlen Ginn, who survives.
Berneda L. Foster
Berneda L. Foster, 78, of Quincy, died at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Riverside Methodist Hospitals in Columbus.
She was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Botkins, a daughter of the late Elza R. and Cleola Helmlinger Weaver.
On Oct. 3, 1943, she married Marvin W. "Bill" Foster, who survives.
A homemaker, Mrs. Foster retired after 25 years with the Stolle Corporation in Sidney. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Jackson Center.
Other survivors include two daughters, Marilane (Dennis) Fry of Quincy and Julie (Greg) Wick of DeGraff; two sons, Daniel (Sue) Foster of New Market, N.H., and Jeffrey (Tricia) Foster of Quincy; one sister, Treva Ordean of Sidney; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
John 'Jack' Walter Kaiser
John "Jack" Walter Kaiser, 74, of 923 Baldwin St., Elkhart, Ind., died at 8:06 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, in Elkhart General Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born in Dayton on Sept. 22, 1927, a son of Howard M. and Frances Lindy Kaiser.
Mr. Kaiser served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict and spent most of his life as a self-employed painter and carpenter. He also worked as a guard for Acrux Security in Marysville in the years preceding and following his retirement in 1992.
A member of the Frank D. Castle Post 1080 VFW in Bellefontaine, Mr. Kaiser was an avid sports fan who enjoyed building scale model ships and planes as a hobby.
Mr. Kaiser is survived by one son, Richard (Sharon) Kaiser of Elkhart; two daughters, Larry (Rhonda) Lundgren and Vickie Kaiser-Hager, both of Elkhart; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one infant great-granddaughter, Kilyn Tapp, in 1993.
