Kenneth E. Vance
Kenneth E. Vance, 82, of Bellefontaine, died at 7:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Heartland of Bellefontaine.
He was born in Logan County on Feb. 13, 1919, a son of the late Clifton James and Helen Sloan Vance.
Mr. Vance married the former Annabelle M. Harpest on July 17, 1938, and she preceded him in death Feb. 16, 1981.
Mr. Vance retired as a superintendent in 1980 from Knowlton Construction.
He is survived by one son, David (Crickett) Vance of Bellefontaine; one daughter, Sandra Jean Henry of Winter Park, Fla.; three sisters, Dorothy (Dennis) Berry of Bellefontaine, Eleanor (Robert) Troyer of Belle Center and Patricia Sickles of Deltona, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
One sister, Lola Mae Wilson, and one brother, Donald Vance, preceded him in death.
William V. Minnick
William V. Minnick, 74, of Springfield, died Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001, in The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus.
He was born in London on May 19, 1927, a son of Jesse and Fannie Ruth Vanscoy Minnick.
Mr. Minnick was a veteran of the United States Navy who served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was the broker of Minnick Realty, later merging with Willie Burton to form Burton-Minnick Realty with a combined service of more than 30 years, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Springfield Board of Realtors. Prior to his real estate career, he was a former owner of Standard Oil and Marathon stations.
Mr. Minnick was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Springfield Board of Realtors, Lions Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 397 and the Loyal Order of Moose 536.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Donna McNeil Minnick; five daughters, Sandra (Ross) Minnick-Spence, Cherie L. (Ernest) Minnick-Holbrook, both of Russells Point, Cathy (Ken) Minnick-Donahoe of Urbana, Sonya L. (Carl) Zugelder of Springfield and Cheryl (Robert) Cope of Mechanicsburg; one son Brian Davidson of Springfield; three sisters, Louise (Eldon) Beaver of London, Ruthann (special friend, Lyle) Winker of Huntsville and Wyonna Pope of Kettering; two brothers, Wilber (Cecile) Minnick of The Plains and Kenneth (Virginia) Minnick of London; eight grandchildren, Julie (Shawn) Andon, Cathy (Todd) Detrick, Shannon Spence, Stephanie (Steven) Sagraves, Shawn (Shellie) Vienhaus, Misty Smith, Troy Donahoe and Kendra Cope; seven great-grandchildren, Summer, Brook, Travis, Corey, Garrett, Makenzie, and Shawna; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jessie Lee Minnick.
Daniel W. Palmer
Daniel W. Palmer, 70, a resident of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Bellefontaine, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Lee Memorial Health Park Center, Ft. Myers, Fla.
He was born in Bellefontaine on Oct. 21, 1930.
Mr. Palmer was a retired construction engineer in Columbus and moved to Punta Gorda in 1996.
A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of many organizations and societies.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Huffman Palmer; one daughter, Christy Hamilton; three sons, Dr. Daniel W. Palmer Jr., Greg Palmer and Brian Palmer; six grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.
Emlyn "Curly" Richard
Former Bellefontaine resident Emlyn "Curly" Richard, 74, of 1179 Sylvan Drive, Wilmington, died at 2:35 p.m. Sunday at Hospice of Dayton.
He was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Swansea, South Wales, Great Britain, a son of Thomas and Mary Ann Richard.
Mr. Richard married the former Mary Rosella Smock in Logan County on Dec. 13, 1952, and she preceded him in death March 15, 2000.
Mr. Richard served with the British Army in Iraq and Egypt during World War II. He retired from DAB Industries after 37 years of service. He worked there in the metallurgical lab. He was a member of the Harold Kerr Post 173 of the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 2166.
Mr. Richard is survived by a stepson, Norman Smock of Bellefontaine; five grandchildren, Trisa (Randy) Noble of Pennsylvania, Deron and Eric Emlyn Smock of Maryland and Sean Smock and Heather Peeler, both of Arizona; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Ritchie (William) Moore of Wilmington; one brother, Alan (Ilse) Richard of South Wales; and three nephews, David, Brian and Keith Moore.
A stepson, Douglas Smock, preceded him in death in 1989.
Atha Emma Trapp
Atha Emma Trapp, 81, of Sidney, formerly of Quincy, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Sidney.
Born June 18, 1920, in Jasper, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Melissa Key Waldrop.
On Sept. 19, 1937, she married Flois R. Trapp, who died Feb. 23, 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Jack Trapp of Sidney and Marshall Trapp of DeGraff; one daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Kay) Rowe of Mt. Sterling; four sisters, Mrs. G.B. (Pat) Vines of Leoma, Tenn., Mrs. Jacob (Billie) Groff and Mrs. Darrell (Mazie) Evans, both of Cromwell, Tenn., and Mrs. Doyle (Jo) Graves of Ethridge, Tenn.; one brother, Ezra Waldrop of Knoxville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; several great-stepgrandchildren; several great-great-stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, three brothers and one sister.
A homemaker, Mrs. Trapp was a member of the Church of God.
Vera M. Wirick
Vera M. Wirick, 85, formerly of Zanesfield, died at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Logan Acres.
She was born Oct. 24, 1915, in Lewistown, a daughter of Harlie and Nila Hazel Mullholand Leasure.
Survivors include two daughters, Nila Mae (Robert) Henry of Middleburg and Nancy (James) Kerns of Bellefontaine; two sisters, Guila Jenkins of Huntsville and Mona Jean Salyer of Russells Point; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and four great-great-stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Bernard Wirick; two brothers, Kenneth and Roy Leasure; one sister, Rose Lovett and one granddaughter, Teresa Lamb.
Mrs. Wirick retired in 1977 from Harding Machine where she was an inspector. She was a member of the Zanesfield Community Church.
George Fredrick Zedeker
George F. Zedeker, 82, of Springfield, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Community Hospital of Springfield.
He was born March 22, 1919, in Shelby County, a son of John F. and Della Weber Zedeker.
He married Laurabel Inskeep of Middleburg on Oct. 25, 1945.
He is survived by two sons John David Zedeker of Norman, Okla., and Robert Lynn Zedeker of Middleburg; a daughter, Connie Jo Chavez of Warner Robins, Ga.; a sister, Wilma Horn of Springfield; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three nephews.
He graduated from Salem High School in Kingscreek in 1937 and was a truck driver with Kenosha Trucking and Subler Transfer until he retired in 1981.
Carl E. Leiss
Carl E. Leiss, 88, of Jackson Center, died at 2:33 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
He was born in Shelby County on March 8, 1913, a son of the late William and Marie Mathilda Wilt Leiss.
Mr. Leiss was retired from Airstream Inc. of Jackson Center on Jan. 4, 1990.
Mr. Leiss married the former Martha E. Magato on March 28, 1936, and she survives, along with four daughters, Mary Ellen (Roger) Myers and Linda (Paul) Mann, both of Jackson Center, Pat (Jerry) Stewart of Sidney and Shirley (Denny) Brown of Botkins; three sons, Donald (Margee) Leiss of Bellefontaine, Ronald Leiss of Lewistown and Joe (Ann) Leiss of Junction City, Kan.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Bell of DeGraff and Joan Kenning of Maplewood; and two brothers, Clarence (Lora) Leiss of Anna and Raymond (Anis) Leiss of Bucyrus.
Two sisters, three brothers, four infant siblings and two grandsons preceded him in death.
Ray G. Montgomery
Ray G. Montgomery, 60, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at his home in Lorain.
A native of Dayton, he was born May 12, 1941, a son of the late George and Dorothy Quinn Montgomery.
On June 22, 1985, he married Kathleen Sue McAdams, who preceded him in death Oct. 10, 1997.
A 1963 graduate of the University of Dayton, Mr. Montgomery was a mechanical engineer having formerly worked for Columbus Equipment Company and presently for Grasan in Mansfield.
He is survived by three daughters, Wendy (Michael) Montgomery Hilton, Cynthia Montgomery Boaz and Sandra Montgomery, all of Dayton; three granddaughters, Rene and Megan Boaz and Rebecca Hilton; one sister, Patricia (Joe) Flanagan of Dayton; one niece, Molly Flanagan of Dayton and one nephew, Matthew Flanagan of Dayton.
Larry H. Shaner
Larry H. Shaner, 58, of Waynesfield, died at 7:46 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in the emergency room of Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Lima on Oct. 21, 1942, a son of Hobart Austin and Pauline Mary Boham Shaner. His mother survives in Lima.
On Oct. 2, 1960, he married the former Janice Ann Jolliff. She survives in Waynesfield.
He is also survived by three daughters, Connie S. (Jeff) Stelzer of Elida, Teresa S. Moore of Orlando, Fla., and Cindy S. (Glenn) Geboy of Bellefontaine; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Jerry (Mary) Shaner of Lima; and two sisters, Judy (Robert) Hindenlang and Ann (John) Ross, both of Lima.
His father and one daughter, Melissa K. Shaner, preceded him in death.
Mr. Shaner was formerly co-owner of Shaner Shell Service Station in Lima and had been a salesman for Steele's Automotive. He also was a self-employed truck driver, who enjoyed boating, mechanical work and restoring cars.
