William A. Short
William A. Short, 76, of 225 Logan St., Urbana, died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at the McAuley Center, Urbana.
He was born May 25, 1925, in Logan County, a son of Arthur Leonard and Bertha Fry Short.
Mr. Short retired from Bill's Body Shop and served as a U.S. Army corporal during World War II.
He is survived by four children, Judy (Tom) Berry, Jim (Irene) Short, Richard Keith (Shelly) Short and Melinda (Mike) Smith; 10 grandchildren, Jill Camburako, Lisa Willis, Krista Vylasek, Miranda Trace, William Mike Short II, Crystal Wright, Ashley Short, Mathew Short, Gabriel Long and Dakota Smith; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Lee (Dorothy) Short.
He was preceded in death by one son, William Mike Short.
Dorothy "Dickie" Zane
Dorothy "Dickie" Zane, 80, of McClean, Va., daughter of late West Mansfield residents Fred and Mabel Kavanagh, died unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Curtis "Casey" Zane; two daughters, Susan (Bruce) Falls and Pamela (Steve) Healy; one son, C.J. (Regina) Zane; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are three sisters, Rosalie (Aim) Bunselmeier of High Springs, Fla., and Norma Jean (Delphos) Goff and Nonabelle Wilgus, both of West Mansfield; one brother, Ray (Bonnie) Kavanagh of West Mansfield; and one sister-in-law, Laverne Kavanagh of West Mansfield.
One brother, one sister and two brothers-in-law preceded her in death.
Charles F. Stahl
Charles F. Stahl, 83, of 260 E. U.S. Route 36, Piqua, died at 12:41 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney.
He was born in Buckland Jan. 3, 1918, a son of the late Frank and Mary Harris Stahl.
Mr. Stahl married the former Elizabeth Green on Oct. 10, 1983, and she survives.
In 1935, he graduated as salutatorian of the Brown Township High School in Fletcher. He attended the St. PaulŐs United Church of Christ in Piqua.
He and his brother, Harry, who died in 1984, started a used implement business in 1955 and conducted several large implement auctions until 1984. They shared a Case machinery dealership and co-ownership of a USAC Sprint car, No. 36, which they also drove.
The U.S. Army veteran of World War II was a member of the Piqua American Legion.
Along with his wife, Mr. Stahl is survived by one stepdaughter, Joan Brubaker of Lexington, Ky.; one stepson, Gary (Geni) Green of Covington; stepgrandchildren, Monty (Dwann) Brubaker of Lexington, Jolene Brubaker of Gathersburg, Md., Gary M. (Dawn) Green of Covington and Christopher (Tara) Green of Columbus; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lela Shane of New Carlisle and Betty Zell of Troy; two nephews; two nieces; and several great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by another brother, George in 1918.
William D. Wolfe
William D. Wolfe, 73, of Lima, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Wapakoneta Manor, Wapakoneta.
He was born in Columbus on Jan. 25, 1928, a son of the late William H. and Forest May Carmean Wolfe Moore.
On Dec. 4, 1952, Mr. Wolfe married the former Ila M. McKinney, and she preceded him in death Dec. 7, 1988.
The U.S. Army veteran of World War II retired Feb. 1, 1982, from Airstream Inc. of Jackson Center after 19 years of service.
He is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Ann (Donnie) Green of Tulsa, Okla., and Valerie (Ronnie) Markwell of Wapakoneta; one son, David L. (Carolyn) Wolfe of Lima; three grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson; nine great-stepgrandchildren; two half-sisters, Delores (John) Glass of Pennsylvania and Lois (Ansol) Lloyd of Lima; and two half-brothers, Don (Sandy) Wolfe and Greg (Judy) Wolfe, both of Columbus.
One son, Jeffrey Lynn Wolfe; stepmother, Rose Wolfe and one half-brother preceded him in death.
Kathryn Irene Danner
Kathryn Irene Danner, 80, of 320 E. Columbus Ave., West Liberty, went home to be with the Lord at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
She was born April 13, 1921, in Gretna, a daughter of the late Joseph E. and Thelma R. Young Jackson.
On Aug. 6, 1939, in Logan County, she married Eugene W. Danner, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jack (Joyce) Danner of Ponca City, Okla., and Steven (Judy) Danner of West Liberty; one daughter, Becky (Carl) McClure of Bellefontaine; three brothers, John Jackson, Howard "Bud" Jackson and Charles "Sonny" Jackson, all of DeGraff; three sisters, Eva Brenner and Helen Mohr, both of DeGraff and Emma Cloninger of Bellefontaine; nine grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-stepgrandchild.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob, Bill, Paul and George Jackson.
A homemaker, Mrs. Danner was employed with Bulldog Electric for 13 years. She also worked at Lew's IGA in Bellefontaine and Mohr's IGA in DeGraff.
Mrs. Danner was a 50-year member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 45 years and was active in the Missionary Guild. She baked pies for the Scioto Hills Baptist Camp for many years. She loved sewing, embroidering and quilting.
Violet Katherine Mosley
Violet Katherine Mosley, 80, of 413 Fairview Ave., Sidney, died at 10:23 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Sidney.
A native of Quincy, she was born Jan. 27, 1921, a daughter of Harley and Bessie Allen McFarlin.
Her first husband, Kenneth Legge, died in 1974. She then married Simon Mosley on Nov. 25, 1978, in Sidney, and he survives.
Mrs. Mosley was a homemaker and was affiliated with the First Church of the Nazarene in Sidney.
Also surviving are two sons, Leonard Legge of Ft. Thomas, Ky., and Carl Legge of Chillicothe; two daughters and their spouses, Ellen and Charles Winters of Wichita, Kan., and Caroline and Robert Doseck of Oldsmar, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Marsha Mosley of Oklahoma; one sister, Mae Foster of Bellefontaine; one brother, Ernest McFarlin of Sidney; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ralph "Pete" Legge; one sister, Martha Overholser; and four brothers, Irvin, Carl, Gilbert and Robert McFarlin.
Leon R. "Don" Simpkins
Leon R. "Don" Simpkins, 78, of Findlay, formerly of the Lakeview area, died at 1:23 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, in his home.
Born on March 4, 1923, in Nallen, W.Va., he was a son of the late Roy M. Simpkins and Ollie Wheeler Simpkins Davis.
He married Marie Sparks on Nov. 15, 1974, and she survives, along with a daughter, Roxie Lauber of Conover; two sons, Larry Simpkins of Illinois and David Simpkins of Quincy; a stepdaughter, June Allfrey of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three stepsons, Bob (Cheryl) Sparks of Greensboro, N.C., Terry (Roxanne) Sparks of Findlay and John (Janet) Sparks of Pittsboro, N.C.; a sister, Mary (Robert) Dye of Quincy; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He retired from CW Transport of Lima in September 1981. The World War II Army veteran served in Germany and attended Blanchard Avenue Pentecostal Church of God in Findlay. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 908 in Lima, VFW Post 3333 in Kenton and American Legion Post 3 in Findlay.
A sister, Pat, and a brother, Leonard, preceded him in death.
