Urban W. Westrick
Urban W. Westrick, 79, of Lakeview, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the home of his son, Keith in Maria Stein.

He was born April 28, 1922, in Leipsic, a son of the late Adam and Margaret Faber Westrick.

He married Mary Jane Burkhart on Aug. 24, 1946, and she survives.

A former manager and salesman for Harvey Equipment of Lima, he retired from Streakers in Minster and also was a farmer.

The U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II who served in the 8th and 15th Air Force, participated in 50 combat missions over Germany and the European Theatre. He was a recipient of the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Russells Point and VFW Post 9381 of Ada, where he was a life member and a past commander, serving from 1976 to 1978. He also was a member of Father Anthony Wolf Council 4378, Knights of Columbus in Russells Point and the Fraternal Order
of Eagles, Aerie 3615, Lakeview. He was a charter member of the New Bavaria VFW.

Also surviving are two sons, Wayne (Kathy) Westrick of Ottawa and Keith (Sheila) Westrick of Maria Stein; five grandchildren, Eric, Adam, Matthew, Stephanie and Dawn; three great-grandchildren, Maidge, Alex and Ashton; and one sister, Edna Okuley of New Bavaria.

He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Lynn; two brothers, Leo and Albert; and one sister, Viola.

Carrie G. Holland

Carrie G. Holland, 92, of Ridgeway, died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton.

Born on July 23, 1909, in Hardin County, she was a daughter of Hosea and Bertha Smiley Morison. She married Paul Holland on Sept. 28, 1934, and he died May 11, 1973.

A homemaker, she is survived by two daughters, Paulette (Larry) Jordan of Ridgeway and Paula (Gary) Jolliff of Corvallis, Ore.; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by four sisters, Laura Morison, Anna Mae Brown, Flora Kinnear and Freda Park; and one brother, Edmund Morison.

James C. Vanica
Former Bellefontaine and Columbus resident James C. Vanica, 78, of Canton, passed away Thursday morning, April 18, 2002.

He was born in Bowling Green on May 2, 1923, a son of the late Thomas C. and Mildred B. Wilcox Vanica.

His wife, Mary Rose Vanica, preceded him in death in 1988.

The 1947 graduate of Bowling Green State University and World War II Army veteran was retired from Columbus Liquidators.

He is survived by three daughters, Judith Vanica of Canton, and Jennifer (Ronald Cummings) Vanica and Joni (John Dupler) Vanica, both of California; one son, James Vanica II of Nevada; three grandchildren, Joshua Cummings, and Nathan and Nataleigh Dupler; and one brother, Don Vanica of Nevada.

He also was preceded in death by one brother, Bob Vanica; and one sister, Jean Marshall.

June Linville Kauffman
June Linville Kauffman, 92, formerly of St. Marys and West Liberty, passed away at 7:25 a.m. April 19, 2002, at the Spring Meadows Nursing Home in Woodstock.

Born on June 1, 1909, in Champaign County, Mrs. Kauffman was the daughter of the late William S. and Della A. Collins Linville.

On May 7, 1927, she married Amos C. Kauffman in Kentucky, who preceded her in death on Aug. 8, 1969.

Mrs. Kauffman is survived by her son Philip Kauffman of Woodstock; her nieces Esther Clark of West Liberty and Jean A. Nawrocki of Delta; and several other great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers William S. Levi and Philip Linville and her sisters Vaughn King, Marjorie Zerkle, Laura Belle Boyer and Rachel Linville.

During her life, Mrs.Kauffman was a member of the West Liberty Church of Christ, a former Girl Scout leader in St. Marys and active in the Hospital Guild at St. Marys Hospital.

She was also a homemaker.

Charmion I. Bauders

Charmion I. Frederick Bauders, 88, of Shaker Heights, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002.

A former resident of Logan County, she was a retired elementary teacher and steadfast supporter of the ministry of her deceased husband, the Rev. Paul S. Bauders.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ellen Hawes of Conroe, Texas; one son, Robert S. (Rosemary) Bauders of Shaker Heights; two brothers, Wilmer Frederick of Syracuse, Ind., and Paul Frederick of Chatham, N.J.; one sister, Lola Kantlehner of Mt. Carroll, Ill.; six grandchildren, David (Deanna) Bauders of Cleveland Heights, Christopher Bauders of Largo, Fla., Stephen Hawes of Conroe, Sheri (Michael) Curran of Woodlands, Texas, Teresa (Richard) Bogatto of Houston, Texas, and William (Elizabeth) Hawes of Menlo Park, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren.

Bette Duff Beckwith
Bette Duff Beckwith, 65, of Sparks, Nev., died Tuesday, April 2, 2002. She was born in Logan County on Feb. 28, 1937, a daughter of the late Donald and Thelma Moore Duff.

She was a graduate of Bellefontaine High School.

She is survived by two brothers, Kenneth Duff of Bellefontaine and Karl Duff of Mendon; one sister, Shirley Ammons of Newark; one aunt, Winifred Downing of Bellefontaine; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Keith Duff, preceded her in death.

Mildred O. Cooper

Mildred O. Cooper, 92, of 4845 S. Township Road 187, West Liberty, died at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana.

She was born April 17, 1909, in Champaign County, a daughter of the late Edward B. and Anna Wilkins Thomas.

The homemaker was a graduate of Salem High School and Ohio University and formerly taught at Urbana North Ward Elementary School. She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Friends Church.

She is survived by two children, Donald (Sharon) Cooper of Troy and Barbara (Jack) Wilson of Washington Court House; five grandchildren, David Cooper, Karen (Dan) Rittenhouse, Kevin Wilson, Lori (Mark) Chrisman and Kyle Wilson; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Florence Mae Lowe of Urbana; one brother, Orville (Lucille) Cooper of Piqua; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Cooper; an infant daughter; one brother, Harold Thomas; and two sisters, Dorothy Bull and Ruth Miller.

Levi C. Hartzler

Levi C. Hartzler, 93, of 1225 Greencroft Drive, Goshen, Ind., passed away at 6 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, at The Cottages, Greencroft Gables.

He was born in Bellefontaine on March 20, 1909, a son of the late Archie D. and Rhoda Yoder Hartzler.

On Sept. 23, 1939, he married the former Irene Mayercik at the Mennonite Home Mission in Chicago. She preceded him in death Dec. 12, 1997.

In 1935, he received his bachelor's degree from Goshen College and earned his master's degree from the University of Northwestern in 1940.

He served as pastor at Mennonite Home Mission from 1935 to 1937, and as a relief worker in Spain under Mennonite Relief and American Friends Service Committee from 1937 to 1939. He was a member of the Goshen College faculty from 1939 to 1949, where he also was dean of men.

He was ordained as a Deacon in College Mennonite Church June 27, 1943, a position he maintained for 32 years. He also served as secretary for Relief and Service and secretary for Information Services for the Mennonite Board of Missions from 1949 to 1959.

He taught English, Bible literature and cadet teaching at Elkhart Community Schools from 1959 until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the College Mennonite Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Carol (Dwight) Grieser of Goshen; one son, Ronald Lee Hartzler of Newton, Kan.; four grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and two sisters, Bertha (Harley) King of West Liberty and Orpha (Russell) Reed of St. Paris.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Chad Robert Schlumbohm
Chad Robert Schlumbohm, 24, of 1382 Road Y, Leipsic, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

He was born in Findlay on May 27, 1977, a son of Aaron and Marie Lessig Schlumbohm of Leipsic.

On Jan. 8, 2000, he married the former Alissa Armstrong and she survives.

The 1995 graduate of Arlington High School was a member of the FFA, 4-H and the National Rifle Association.

Also surviving are three brothers, Levi T. Schlumbohm of Ottawa and Jonah M. Schlumbohm and Michael J. Schlumbohm, both of Leipsic; one sister, Erin M. Schlumbohm of Leipsic; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lessig of rural Arlington; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Schlumbohm of Findlay.
