Ruth Miriam Yoder
West Liberty resident Ruth Miriam Yoder, a devoted and loving wife and mother, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 6, 2002. She died at 5:58 a.m. in the McAuley Center in Urbana at the age of 88.
Born Jan. 22, 1914, in Springfield, she was a daughter of the late Leonard and LuLu Caroline Kyle Griffith.
On Jan. 29, 1939, she married Donald Richard Yoder in Springfield. He preceded her in death Nov. 6, 1990.
Survivors include three sons, Stephen (Susan) Yoder of Bexley, Jeffrey (Kathleen) Yoder of Urbana and Chris (Debra) Yoder of Circleville; one daughter, Linda (Robert) Holmes of Hilliard; one sister, Dorotha Atha of West Liberty; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A 1932 graduate of Springfield High School, she was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church
Jean Elizabeth Doup
Jean Elizabeth Doup, 63, of Bellefontaine, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.
She was born in Auburn, N.Y., on Oct. 4, 1939, a daughter of the late George D. and Florence Mae Seigfred Cameron. She also was preceded in death by one brother, G. Douglas Cameron, and one sister, Patricia Ann Cameron.
She is survived by a son, William (Julie) Doup III of West Mansfield; three daughters, Deborah (Robert) Vance, Kathleen (Thomas) Doup-Snapp and Patricia A. Doup, all of Bellefontaine; and former husband, Dr. William Doup of Bellefontaine.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Jonathan Doup, Elizabeth Lee, Elayna Vance, Casey Vance, Anthony Snapp, Stephen Johnson, Jamie Holycross, Jessica Ramsey, Angie Flores, April Bolion, Robert Vance Jr. and Tommy Snapp.
A homemaker and certified nursing assistant, she attended the First United Methodist Church and was a 1957 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School.
She was a member of the Ohio Laureate Beta Zeta Sorority, Beta Sigma Phi Chapter since 1963. She also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 459 and the BPOElks Lodge 132 Auxiliary, Bellefontaine.
She was a former Girl Scout leader and an avid golfer and bowler.
Betty J. Dytom
Betty J. Dytom, 73, of Bellefontaine, died at 2:50 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
She was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Belle Center, a daughter of the late Clinton and Minnie Grow Davis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dytom in August 1999. Four brothers and three sisters are also deceased.
A 1948 graduate of Belle Center High School, she was employed at DAB Industries for 34 years, and retired in 1993. She was a collector of Teddy bears and stamps.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Donald) Armstrong and Jennifer Rice, both of Bellefontaine; one son, Mark (Deborah) Rice of Clarkesville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jon (Lindsey) Armstrong and Thomas Rice; two brothers, Raymond (Katie) Davis of Elkhart, Ind., and George (Jean) Davis of Waynesfield; and three sisters, Pauline Davis and Frances Mills, both of Bellefontaine, and Shirley (Val) DeCook of South Bend, Ind.
Edward R. Hiltibran
Edward R. Hiltibran, 64, of Urbana, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, in Mercy Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Urbana on Oct. 25, 1938, a son of Alice Horn of Springfield and the late Arthur Hiltibran.
On Aug. 30, 1957, he married the former Marilyn Bailey and she survives, along with one daughter, Annette (George) Black of Juno Beach, Fla.; two sons, Andrew (Marsha) Hiltibran and Alan (Angela) Hiltibran of Urbana; twin brother, William (Polly) Hiltibran of West Liberty; three brothers, Barry Horn, Nelson (Jane) Horn and Thom (Sandi) Hiltibran, all of Springfield; and two sisters, Judy (Dave) Benning and Caroline (Patrick) Hayes of Springfield.
He also is survived by six grandchildren, Betsy, Luke, Dalton, Courtney, Meredith and McKenna; mother-in-law, Irene Bailey of Urbana; brothers-in-law, Jim (Linda) Bailey of Parma, Idaho, Richard (Ann) Bailey of Lolo, Mont., and Marti Streator and Jack (Louella) Bailey, both of Urbana; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was a 1957 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School and a 1962 graduate of Reppert School of Auctioneering.
In 1989, he retired from International Harvester. He was a member of the Mechanicsburg Lodge 113 of the Free and Accepted Masons and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, as well as the Antioch Shrine and the Champaign County Shrine Club
Melvin R. Croy
Melvin R. Croy, 84, of Kenton, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Hardin Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Hardin County on Sept. 24, 1918, a son of the late Alva and Moade Reed Croy. One sister, Ardinell Richards, also preceded him in death.
On Aug. 25, 1946, he married the former Marie Gatchell in Dola and she survives, along with two daughters, Jane E. (Earl William) Hawkins of Sunbury and Nancy (John P.) Rea of Columbus; four grandchildren; and one sister, Edna (Ronald "Red") Wolford of Lima.
A 1937 graduate of Kenton High School, he was retired as a brakeman and conductor for Conrail.
He served with the 6th Cargo Squadron of the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He also served during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the Masonic Latham Lodge 154, Elks Lodge 157 and St. John's Lutheran Church of Dola.
Joyce E. McIntire
Joyce E. McIntire, 49, of 29790 County Road 22, Elkhart, Ind., died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at the Elkhart General Hospital, where she had been a patient since Nov. 13. She was seriously ill since March.
Born Feb. 13, 1953, in Bellefontaine, she was a daughter of Harold Phillip and M. Joan Hatcher McIntire. Her father died July 15, 1985, and her mother survives in Elkhart.
She resided in the Rosewood-Springhills area until 1962, when she moved to Indiana. She has resided in the Elkhart-Nappanee area ever since. She graduated from Jimtown High School in 1971.
She was a sales coordinator in the automobile industry having worked for the Actia Corporation.
Also surviving are two sons, Denver W. (Toni) Anthony of Elkhart and Dallas W. Anthony of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; one granddaughter, Kira; two sisters, June E. (Thomas) Jean of Anchorage, Alaska, and Linda C. McIntire of Elkhart; and one brother, Daryl P. (Marti) McIntire of Ft. Wayne
Donald Wayne Poppe
Donald Wayne Poppe, 62, of Anna, died at 9:46 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, in his home.
He was born in Pemberton in Shelby County on June 28, 1949, a son of the late Leonard W. and Evelyn Norma Wurster Poppe. jAn infant daughter and one grandson also preceded him in death.
On June 28, 1963, he married the former Janet Kay Huber and she survives, along with three daughters, Jill Simes of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Patti Jo (James) Lemmon of Quincy and Bonnie (Michael) Carity of Anna; and one son, Christopher W. Poppe of Wapakoneta; five grandchildren, Andrew, Michael, Hannah, Dessa and Tyler; and four brothers, the Rev. Gerald E. (Betty Jo) Poppe of Wichita Falls, Texas, Larry M. (Judy) Poppe of Jackson Center and James L. (Carol) Poppe and Terry L. Poppe, both of Maplewood.
On Feb. 1, he retired from Airstream Inc. in Jackson Center after 36 years of service. He also was a farmer and 14-year school bus driver for Anna Local Schools.
The veteran of the U.S. Air Force was a 1958 graduate of Jackson Center High School and former board member of Pioneer Electric of Shelby County.
Carl D. Cummins
Carl D. Cummins, 85, of Wapakoneta, died at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at his residence.
Born Nov. 7, 1917, in Stokes Township, Logan County, he was a son of the late Finn and Rosetta Shaw Cummins.
He married Ruth Davis on Aug. 12, 1939, and she survives, along with five daughters, Rose (Joe) Parker of Lima, Phyllis (Delmas) Hicks and Linda (Michael) Armitage, both of Edgerton, Judy (Jack) Burning of Marblehead and Sandra Killian of Wapakoneta; two sons, Garry (Kathy) Cummins of Harrod and Larry (Ruth) Cummins of Pacific, Mo.; 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and eight brothers.
In 1980, he retired from Koneta Rubber Company in Wapakoneta.
Bette Lou Ellis
Bette Lou Ellis, 78, died at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her residence in Bellefontaine.
Born Jan. 4, 1924, in Bellefontaine, she was a daughter of the late Samuel E. and Tina Rhoads Coleman.
On Nov. 18, 1944, in Bellefontaine, she married William C. Ellis, who preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1996.
A 1941 graduate of Bellefontaine High School, she was a member of the First Christian Church, Bellefontaine. She also held memberships in the American Legion Auxiliary, Mary Rutan Hospital Guild, the Senior Guild and Drum Corps Wives.
She was the manager for Heritage Court residences.
Survivors include one son, Patrick (Deborah) Ellis, two daughters, Cathie (Jon) Hubbard and Pamela (Phillip) Pulfer, all of Bellefontaine; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
