Michael L. Miller
Michael L. Miller, 54, of Bellefontaine, died at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
The son of Lester and Thelma Everly Miller of Huntsville, was born April 24, 1948, in Logan.
He married Barbara Jean Walter on June 3, 1967, in Wharton, and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Michael L. Miller II of Bellefontaine; three daughters, Michelle L. (Andrew) Allen of DeGraff, Laura Jean (Jason) Rostorfer of Bellefontaine and Bobbie Jo (Darrell) Trittschuh of Marysville; one brother, Steven (Sharon) Miller of Upper Sandusky; two sisters, Sharon K. (Butch) Thomas and Peggy J. ( Rod) Burnside of Huntsville; five grandchildren with another expected.
He was preceded in death by one brother, David Allen.
Employed with the Logan County Engineer's Office in highway maintenance, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was known as the doughnut man at Gretna Brethren Church, Bellefontaine, where he was a member. He was an avid motorcyclist, softball player and golfer.
Albert J. Thompson
Albert J. Thompson, 74, of Bellefontaine, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
He was born in Urbana on April 16, 1928, a son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Helfrich Thompson.
The 1946 graduate of Urbana High School was retired as an auto mechanic.
On Dec. 25, 1948, he married the former Jean Anne Hullinger and she survives, along with one son, James A. (Sara) Thompson of Urbana; two daughters, Deborah (Steven) Davis of Titusville, Fla., and Becky Jo (Robert S.) Dinovo of Snellville, Ga.; two brothers, Tommy (Nancy) Thompson and Robert (Mary) Thompson, both of Urbana; and nine grandchildren, Rendy Dinovo Matthews, Heather Dinovo, Emily Dinovo, Shane (Laura) Davis, Thad and Cory Davis, and Patrick, Charlie and Isabelle Thompson.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Patrick Thompson; and two sisters, Dorothy Watson and Justine Richards.
Bill Powers
Bill Powers, 82, of Lakeview, died at 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
He was born in Union County on Sept. 3, 1920, a son of the late Benjamin and Ilah Clapsaddle Powers. A son, Dan Powers, and two brothers, Max and Charles Powers also preceded him in death.
On Sept. 3, 1987, he married the former Doris Sehlhorst in Bellefontaine and she survives, along with two sons, John (Jayne) Powers of Urbana and Todd (Kelly) Powers of Bellefontaine; and three daughters, Connie (Gene) Plank of Bellefontaine and Donna (Ron) Martz and Bev (Mike) Martz, both of Huntsville; three stepsons, Dan (Vickie) Gamble of Williamsburg, Va., and John Gamble and Brad Gamble, both of Bellefontaine; one sister, Mary Bushong of Zanesville; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was a salesman for Creviston Implement of West Mansfield and was a 1938 graduate of West Mansfield High School.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the Harold Kerr Post 173 of the American Legion in Bellefontaine, the Doyle R. Miller AMVETS Post 39 in Lakeview and Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 3615 at Indian Lake, as well as the American Quarter Horse Association and the Logan County Farm Bureau.
Paul A. 'Moon' Brannan
Paul A. "Moon" Brannan, 58, of Zanesfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, surrounded by his family at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Bellefontaine on Nov. 21, 1944, a son of the late Tom and Ruth Skidmore Brannan. A brother, Clifford Brannan, also preceded him in death.
On April 10, 1976, he married the former Cynthia Summers in Kenton and she survives, along with three daughters, Lyndsey (Shawn) Stiltner of Rushsylvania, Paula (Kevin) McDonnell of Tucson, Ariz., and Dakota Brannan, 10, at home; and five grandchildren, Joseph and Stevie Yslas, Mykala and Rayvn Stiltner, and Samantha McDonnell.
Survivors also include his stepmother, Rebecca Broadden of Urbana; three sisters, Jean (Norm) Kenny of Bellefontaine, Phillis Carter of Ostrander and Joy (Frank) Molden of Pomeroy; three stepbrothers, Bob (Frieda) Metcalf ofRichwood, Victor Scott of Bellefontaine and Matt Scott of Urbana; his father- and mother-in-law, Paul "Bud" and Shirley Summers of Russells Point; a sister-in-law, Pam Scott of Mt. Victory; a brother-in-law, Dick (Jane) Summers of Bellefontaine; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
For more than 20 years, Moon owned and operated Brannan Excavating. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting and fishing.
He was also a NASCAR racing enthusiast and loyal fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Avonelle M. Call
Avonelle M. Call, 86, of Kenton, died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, in Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton.
She was born in Hardin County on April 16, 1916, a daughter of the late Frank and Elfa Pemberton Gatchell. One brother, Donald Lee, also preceded her in death.
In 1956, she married Ralph Call.
She is survived by one sister, Ethel Montgomery of Kenton; one brother, Russell Gatchell of Bellefontaine; and nieces and nephews.
A homemaker, she managed the Avon Beauty Shop in Bellefontaine and was a beautician in Columbus for many years.
She was a member of the Silver Creek Methodist Church near Kenton and was a 1936 Dunkirk High School graduate.
Ronald Allen Davis
Ronald Allen Davis, 48, of 119 N. Mill St., DeGraff, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, in the Mary Rutan Hospital emergency room.
He was born in Bellefontaine on June 29, 1954.
On April 19, 1975, he married the former Pamela L. Pequignot in DeGraff and she survives, along with his mother and stepfather, Martha Jean Cost Davis and Fred Neil Detrick, both of Bellefontaine; one daughter, Amy Davis of Bellefontaine; and one son, Neil Davis of DeGraff.
His father, Kenneth Davis preceded him in death.
The 1972 graduate of Riverside High School was a group leader at Quincy Casting and was a member of the Ohio National Guard, the American Legion Miami Valley Post 652 in DeGraff, the Sunset and Automotive bowling leagues and the Springhills Presbyterian Church.
Otho G. Johnson
Otho G. Johnson, 88, of Cable, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Champaign County, he was born Sept. 10, 1914, in Mingo, a son of Alfred Thomas and Ruth Gilbert Johnson.
On May 10, 1939, he married Roberta Bodey. They were married for 57 years before her death.
A former Champaign County Commissioner, he was a member of the North Lewisburg United Methodist Church, Blazing Star Chapter 268 Free & Accepted Masons and Portia Chapter 448 Order of the Eastern Star. He was active in the Emmaus community and served on numerous boards including the Triad Local Schools Board of Education, Champaign Memorial Board, Champaign County Library Board, the Research, Conservation & Development Board for Champaign, Logan and Union counties.
Survivors include six sons, Alfred (Marion), Grant (Gladene), Eric (Kathy) and David (Mary Ellen), all of Mingo, Dan (Jan) of Gainesville, Fla., and Dennis (Teri) of Lima; 14 grandchildren, Laura (Dean) Durliat, Otho Galen, Chet, Jed, Christopher (Allison), Gregory (Crystal), Nicholas (Katie), Patrick, Darin (Krishna), Shevon (Eric) Kaufman, Maria, Millicent, Rachel and Elisabeth Johnson; six great-grandchildren, Amelia, Agnes, Andrew, Emily, Addalyn and Otho Garrett; and one brother, Philip Johnson of Mingo.
He also was preceded in death by one brother, Claude Johnson, and one grandson, Anthony Johnson.
Charles Jack Ragland Sr.
Charles Jack Ragland Sr., 59, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, in his home in Bellefontaine.
The Fort Wayne, Ind., native was born Jan. 23, 1944, a son of James S.Ragland and Ethel "Sue" Morris Ragland.
His father preceded him in death Sept. 11, 2002, and his mother survives in Huntsville.
He was a former employee of McArthur Township and Airstream Inc. in Jackson Center.
Survivors also include one son, Charles Jack Ragland Jr. of Bellefontaine; three sisters, Claudia (William) Shellenbarger of Perrysburg, Jill (Carl) Fulmer of Walland, Tenn., and Pandora (Robert) Plikerd of Russells Point; two brothers, Samuel (Janice) Ragland and Matt Ragland, both of Bellefontaine; and many nieces and nephews.
One brother, David Ragland, died in October 1980.
Roy A. Shaner
Roy A. Shaner, 79, of Jackson Center, died at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at the Fair Haven Shelby County Home, Sidney.
Born in Stokes Township, Logan County, on Dec. 14, 1923, he was a son of the late Orlo V. and Norma C. Cummins Shaner.
On April 5, 1947, he married Martha Metz, who survives.
He retired from the Copeland Corporation in Sidney in 1988 after 42 years of service.
A member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Montra and the Copeland Retirees, he was an avid supporter of Jackson Center basketball.
Also surviving are two daughters, Rita (Thomas) Maddy of Sidney and Marcia (Dan) Burch of Lewistown; two sons, Rick (Patricia) Shaner of Bluffton and Tom (Pam) Shaner of Jackson Center; nine grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two stepgranddaughters; three great-stepgrandchildren; one sister, Jeanette (Brooks) Knoch of Wapakoneta; one brother, Reed (Lois) Shaner of New Hampshire; and many nieces and nephews.
One sister and three brothers preceded him in death.
