Mel sponsored and coached boys and girls athletic programs. Dedicated to the sports programs at Nelsonville-York High School, he personally transported the football team's equipment to all away games for the past six years.
Mel spearheaded a renovation of the Nelsonville-York Gymnasium and weight room and expanded and updated the trophy cases. He was actively fund-raising for the new baseball/softball fields, football practice area, and sports center at Nelsonville-York High School and the 2002 NYHS ladies basketball trip to San Diego.
He was the driving force for fund-raising for N-Y athletics for the past five years.

He contributed to Hocking College and cooperated in public service endeavors for residents of SEPTA Center. He was a member of the St. Mary of the Hills and N-Y High School Athletic bingos.
Blackburn Appliances has been a family affair since 1945, when Melvin's mother and father began their business at 346 Chestnut St. Both Mel and his sister, Mary, began working in the business when they were youngsters. When Mel returned from military service in 1968, he rejoined his father in business.
In 1976, when his father retired, Mel purchased the 5, 000-square-foot business. His success in the business led to several expansions. The first was in 1985 when he purchased a new building at 947 Chestnut St. and added home furnishings, becoming Blackburn Home Furnishings and Appliances.
The next expansion was the purchase of a lot at 950 E. Canal St., where he built the largest retail establishment in Southeastern Ohio, an accomplishment of which Mel was extremely proud. The showrooms at the Canal Street location were accomplished in three phases in 1991, 1995 and 1999, and their completion brought the square footage of the business to 35, 000 square feet.
