James Finnie Cowie

James Finnie Cowie, 94 of Lorain passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 after a brief illness.
Mr. Cowie was born in Lorain on June 24, 1914 and was a lifelong resident of Lorain.
James was a graduate of Lorain High School class of 1932-B. While in high school he was active in many sports, excelling in tennis and was the City Junior Tennis Champion 1930-1931. In his later years he enjoyed golfing and played well into his eighties.
He attended Case Western Reserve University and retired in 1979 as a metallurgist at US Steel Corp where he had been employed for 46 years.
James was an active member of the US Steel Credit Union (currently LorMet Allied Credit Union) for many years and served five terms as president of the board of directors.
He was a member of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Lorain and the Lorain Senior Fellowship.
James is survived by twin sons Christopher E. (Linda) Cowie of Grafton and Craig C. (Rose) Cowie of Wakeman. He is also survived by two grandchildren Christy James (Terra) Cowie and Heather Ann Cowie, three step grandchildren, two great granddaughters Cora Elizabeth and Kristyn Taylor Cowie and 12 step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Laura E. (nee Eddy) Cowie in 1992, his parents Charles and Margaret (nee Leask) Cowie and a sister Elizabeth Gillette.
Friends may call at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals. 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain on Friday, January 30, 2009 from 4 to 8 PM.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 10:30 AM in the funeral home with Father Stephen Sedgwick, rector of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, officiating.
Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to New Life Hospice, C/O Community Health Partners Foundation 3700 Kolbe Road Lorain, OH 44053-9905.

Mildred Sebo

After a courageous battle with cancer, Mildred Sebo passed away at her home on July 8, 2009, surrounded by her family.
Moving to Ohio from her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she met and married Milan Sebo.
Mildred, affectionately known as "Millie", served the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs as Key Note Speaker, State Chairman of Public Affairs Department, General Arrangements Chairman, District Planning Chairman, and District Legislation Chairman.
Mildred was also past president of Sheffield Lake Women's Club, popular installing officer of many surrounding area Women's Clubs, Sheffield Lake's Outstanding Woman of the Year, Worthy Matron - Day Chapter, Mother Advisor for the Assembly of Rainbow Girls, Fourth District President of Women's Clubs, President of Sheffield Lake- Erie District Women's Club, and President of Lorain Women's Club Incorporated. She also served as Brookside High School Parent-Teachers Forum President.
Mildred is survived by by her beloved husband Milan Sebo, .her daughters, Melody Sebo of Lorain, and Linda Sue Glancy of Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law, Wilma Ames, Vermilion, sisters, Sondra Walker, Westlake, Lorraine Panzau, Centralia, IL, Virginia Regaldo, Corpus Christi, TX, and brother Oda Walker, Jr., Vermilion, six grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
Mildred was preceded in death by her her son, Gregory M. Sebo (April 2008), parents, Oda and Florence Walker and a brother, Bobby Jack Walker.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 5th St., Lorain, Ohio, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be Monday, July 13, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home led by Reverend James E. Smucker, pastor of the Heritage Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Lorain.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Presbyterian Church, PO Box 834, Amherst, Ohio 44001 or the Salvation Army, 2501 Broadway Ave., Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Joseph S. Byrd

Joseph S. Byrd, 43 of Sheffield Lake passed away on Friday, March 26, 2010 at his home following a long illness while in the company of his loving family.
Mr. Byrd was born in Lorain on October 11, 1966, the son of the late Joe D Byrd and Pamela (nee Stohrel) Greene, who survives.
He was a 1985 graduate of Brookside High School. He was a decorated Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force retiring in 2005, with 20 years service. He was a member of the VFW Post 8686.
He attended the Open Arms Church in Sheffield Village.
He worked as a utility worker with the City of Sheffield Lake for the last 4 years.
He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, bowling, working on his home and landscape and was an avid fisherman.
An enthusiastic sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Cleveland Teams and the Ohio State University.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years Carrie A. (nee Malloy) Byrd, mother Pamela Greene (Dale) of Randolph, sisters Patricia Shelton (Buddy) of Akron, Karen Rector of Akron, brother Kevin Byrd of Louisville, KY, half sister Alana Moore of Akron, half brother Kris Byrd of Lorain, maternal grandparents Charlie and Becky Stohrel of North Ridgeville, his mother-in-law Sara Malloy of Sheffield Lake, sisters-in-law Shelly (Ron) Vorisek of Maple Heights, Tracy (Alan) Smith of Sheffield Lake, Tina Jones of Avon, Colleen (Todd) Gillespie of Avon Lake, brother-in-law Michael Malloy of Sheffield Lake and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Joe D. Byrd in 2007, paternal grandparents Roy Oscar & Virgie Byrd.
Friends may call at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain on Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 4:00 pm until 7:30 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow visitation with Rev. Dennis L. Sauer, pastor of the Open Arms Church, as celebrant.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, North Regional Office, 10501 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH, 44106 or Sheffield Lake VFW, Post 8686, 577 Harris Road Sheffield Lake, OH 44054-1409.

Kathryn Lu Caywood

Kathryn Lu Caywood, born October 5, 1935, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2010 taking her last breath with family by her side.
She was born to the late Lewis and Muriel (nee Deveny) Caywood and lived a full life in Lorain along with her late sister Lynda McDermott. Being a colorful spirit, with a thirst for life, she traveled down many paths. She attended Lorain High School, Oberlin College of Commerce and Baldwin Wallace College for secretarial science. She then attended the FBI academy and became Lorain County's first female deputy sheriff. She also attended Stevens Modeling School and worked for many years doing modeling and runway for the David and Lee Agency. Other important accomplishments were working as the executive secretary at the Higbee Company, a travel agent for Svete Travel Bureau and an administrative secretary for the Greater Lorain Chamber of Commerce coordinating and teaching the princesses for the Lorain International Festival.
Katy definitely took great pride in all her work endeavors, however her greatest pride and joy was in being a mother. She wholeheartedly gave the greatest and most important parts of her life to raising her 6 children, Michael Lewis, Gregory Scott, Christine Lynn, Mark Douglas, David Richard and Julie Kay. She was supported and encouraged by her past husbands Eugene Pozega and Julius Urda.
Katy loved being a grandmother to her only granddaughter Nicole Lynn and a friend to her daughter-in-law Carol. Her children, granddaughter and daughter-in-law were her heart. In passing, she will continue to live on in their hearts. Her love, their greatest gift.
Additional loyal friends and relatives sharing in our loss are are Elly and Hugh, Julius Urda, Julie Grm, Julieann Urda, Marylou Valentin, the Moir family, Sean McDermott and family, Greg McDermott and family, Rick Kaczmarek and family, Lisa Kaczmarek and family, Charles and Shallia Engelburger. Your love throughout the years always brought a smile to her face.
A Celebration of Life Gathering for Katy will be in the summer of 2010 in her birthplace of Lorain, Ohio.
Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain is handling local arrangements.

Marian L. Caywood

Marian L. Caywood, 90, (nee Heisner) passed away Friday evening, March 12, 2010 at Kingston of Vermilion Nursing Home following a long illness.
Mrs. Caywood was born in Lorain on July 14, 1919, the daughter of the late Ruben H. and Bessie (nee Cook) Heisner. A lifelong resident of Lorain, she graduated Lorain High School with the class of 1937. She then graduated from the former Oberlin Business College.
She was a member of the former Emmanuel United Methodist Church now Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church. She was very active in the soup kitchen at Emmanuel.
Mrs. Caywood and her late husband Harry were the owner-operators at Caywood Florist in Lorain from 1946 until their retirement in 1985. She belonged to many Bridge Clubs, the AAUW, various civic and social clubs: she enjoyed golf, traveling, crocheting, knitting, antiques, bird watching, being out of doors, and reading.
She is survived by a son Robert H (Patricia) Caywood of Vermilion and a granddaughter Colin (Andrew) Tillotson.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Caywood was preceded in death by her husband Harry F. Caywood in 1990 and a step brother Dick Simpson.
Friends may call on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 from 4-7 pm at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain
Additionally, friends may call on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 from 10:00 am until services at 11:00 am in the funeral home. The Rev. Darlene Robinson, pastor of the Lakewood United Methodist Church will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Ridge Hill Memorial Park cemetery Amherst Township.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church Building Fund 3015 Meister Road Lorain, Ohio 44053.

Holbert L. Lake

Holbert L. (Danny) Lake, 66, of Willoughby and formerly of Lorain died on May 21, 2010 at his home following a brief illness.
Mr. Lake was born in Fairmont, WV on January 17, 1944, the son of the late Alonzo and Bronical B (nee Workman) Lake. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Parma. He was a choir member.
Mr. Lake was a retired machinist from PCC Airfoil in Eastlake. He retired in 2009 after 10 years service. While living in Lorain, he was a long distance truck driver.
He enjoyed country music and attending country music shows.
Mr. Lake will be sadly missed by his longtime companion Ola Mercer of Willoughby, his many relatives and friends, and his church family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby (Jackie) Lake, (nee Anderson) in 2000.
Services will be private with burial in the Peaks cemetery in Berlin Heights.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the First United Pentecostal Church, 12970 Huffman Road, Parma, Ohio 44130.
The Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain is handling the arrangements.
