Nora Elizabeth “Betty” Groves

AMHERST, OH - Nora Elizabeth “Betty“Groves died Feb. 11 , 2010 at Preston County Memorial Hospital in Kingwood, WV.
Betty was born November 15, 1914 in Seven Pines, Marion County, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late William S. Willey and Missouri “Zura” May Yost. She married Thomas Edward Groves December 22, 1934.
As a youth, she was a resident at the West Virginia Children’s Home in Elkins, WV. She also lived in various foster homes throughout WV. As an adult, she lived in Weston and Follansbee, WV before moving to Amherst, OH in 1996.
She was a member of the Weston Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, a Girl Scout and a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed duckpin bowling.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Thomas Dwain Groves, her sisters, Ethel Goldie Furbee Hess and Virginia Hinerman Shear, her brothers, Charles Herbert Hinerman, Frank E. Willey and Maj. Robert Blaine (Willey) Straight.
She is survived by a son, Darrell Wiley Groves, his wife Marilyn Kay of Amherst, her grandsons Todd Alan, Brian Keith, Brooks Edward Groves and Jeffery Scott (Groves) Ryan; her great grand children Olivia Miho, Emily Sayo, Audrey Brooklyn, Julianna Liberty and Noah Thomas Groves.
Graveside services and internment will be held at the Weston Masonic cemetery, Weston, WV Wed. Feb. 17, 2010 at 1:00 PM. A memorial service will be arranged at another time.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her name to any agency that provides for the care of orphan children.

Milton A. Goodman

Milton A. Goodman, 89, of Mayfield Heights formerly of Lorain died at the Cleveland Dialysis Center in Oakwood Village following a brief illness.
Mr. Goodman was born in Cleveland on August 5, 1920, the son of the late Samuel H. and Anna (Reiner) Goodman. Mr. Goodman was a graduate of Lorain High School with the class of 1938-B.
He was a veteran of the US Army serving in both the European and Pacific Theaters during WW II. He earned one silver star. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans.
Mr. Goodman was a member of Agudath B'Nai Israel in Lorain and was a member of the choir.
He was a furniture salesman at Sears in Elyria for the majority of his working career.
Mr. Goodman is survived by daughters Audrey D. (Michael) Weiss of Pepper Pike, Eileen F. (Bob) Dziak of Lorain, Marilyn R. (Mel) Israel of New City, NY, grandchildren Brian K. (Kelly) Dziak, Beth A. (Anthony) Cafardi, Bobby C. (Amanda) Dziak, Sheri Israel, Lisa Israel, Adam J. (Meredith) Melissa S. (Ari) Konheim, Kevin S. Weiss, great grandchildren, Marissa Dziak, Lauren Dziak, Madison Cafardi, Noah Konheim, Alayna Konheim and a brother Art (Barbara) Goodman of Lorain, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife in 2007, Nina (nee Plotkin) Goodman and a brother Norman N. Goodman.
Graveside services will be held in the Salem cemetery, 1435 North Ridge Road, Lorain, Ohio, at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 25, 2010 with Rabbi Joel Chazin, officiating.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to Kidney Foundation, Donations Department, 2831 Prospect Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44115 or to as charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are being handled by the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Dorothy R. Northeim

Dorothy R. Northeim (nee Baetz), 97, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the home of her daughter, Shirley Kitchen, in Lorain. Dorothy was born in Lorain in 1912 and was raised on the family farm in Brownhelm Township. She graduated from Brownhelm High School in 1930 and resided in the township until her marriage to the late Harvey H. Northeim in 1934. The couple eventually settled in Elyria where, together, they built and ran businesses which included an auto repair, machine shop/auto parts sales and lawn mower sales and service. They lived and worked in the Elyria area the majority of their lives. Dorothy was Harvey's "right hand" helper until his death in 1968. She was a jack-of-all trades working with him every day, in addition to taking care of their home and two daughters.
Dorothy was a member of the Lake Avenue United Church of Christ in Elyria and participated in various church activities during the early part of her life. Well into her 80's, her interest and hobbies included playing the organ, baking, caring for her tea and climbing roses, pampering her African violets, and usually tending a small garden patch. She delighted in adding fresh veggies from the garden to a relish plate for her guest to enjoy.
Survivors include daughters Shirley Kitchen (Don) of Lorain, Marlene Kent (Karl) of Running Springs, CA, grandsons Terry Kitchen (Denise) of Lorain, Todd Kitchen (Julie) of Marion, great grandchildren Ben, Addam, Lindsay, Sarah, Taylor and Evan Kitchen, brother Donald C. Baetz of Brownhelm and Florence M. Weeks, (nee Baetz) of Conneaut.
In addition to her husband, Harvey, she was preceded in death by her parents Conrad Baetz in 1944, mother Mary Baetz, (Holzhauer) in 1968, brother Harold W. Baetz in 1990 and a sister Esther E. Manuel (nee Baetz) in 2004.
Friends may call on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 2:00 PM until funeral services at 4:00 PM in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio. Sister Pat Adams, chaplain for New Life Hospice will officiate.
Burial will be private in Brownhelm cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to New Life Hospice, c/o Community Health Partners Foundation, 3600 Kolbe Road, Lorain, Ohio 44053.

Kathleen A. O' Connor

Kathleen A. O' Connor, 89, (nee Flaherty) died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center in Lorain following a brief illness.
Mrs. O'Connor was born in Lorain on November 16, 1920, the daughter of the late James E. and LaVon (nee Heald) Flaherty. A member of the 1939-B Graduating class of Lorain High School, she was a devoted wife and mother. She attended Mary Mother of God Parish in Lorain.
She and her late husband Bill were active in the Moose, IAV and the Polish Club. She enjoyed reading, floral arranging, cooking, baking and watching movies.
Mrs. O'Connor is survived by a daughter Gayle A Kaine (nee O'Connor), a son Terry J O'Connor both of Lorain, grandchildren Colleen M. and Christopher T. Kaine, and great grandchildren Jiordanne and Mackenzie Kaine.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William J. O'Connor on April 17, 2003, sister Mary Jeanne Gerhart and brother Jack Flaherty.
Friends are invited to call Saturday, February 20, 2010 10:00 am until services at Noon in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park cemetery Amherst Township, OH.

Ann Day

Ann Balmert Day, 103, (nee Simko) of Lorain died January 1, 2011 at the Tripoint Medical Center in Concord, Ohio following a brief illness.
Mrs. Day was born in Cleveland on August 14, 1907, the daughter of the late Andrew and Susan (nee Bires) Simko. She lived in Lorain for the majority of her life.
She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Lorain, enjoying bingo and playing pinochle. She was a homemaker. During WW II, she worked at the National Tube.
Mrs. Day is survived by two grandsons, Randal (Mary Jo) Balmert of Mentor, Brad (Kathy) Balmert of Lorain, great grandchildren Daniel and Mallory and her daughter-in-law Norma Balmert of Lorain.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Leo A. Balmert in 1969, her 2nd husband Thomas Elgin Day in 1979, son Robert L Balmert in 2004, several brothers and sisters and a step brother Mike Kmetz.
Friends may call on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 from 9:30 am until prayers at 10:30 am in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. Following prayers at 11:00 am, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1305 E. Erie Street, Lorain with Father Richard Hudak, pastor as celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Lorain

Donald Ruben Drum II

Donald R. Drum, II, 53, of Lorain passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the Cleveland Clinic following a long illness.
Mr. Drum was born in Lorain on May 4, 1957, the son of the late Donald R and Dora M (nee Anthony) Drum. A lifelong resident of Lorain and Sheffield Lake. Mr. Drum graduated from Lorain High School in the Class of 1976.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Lorain and served as an usher. He retired in 2009 from US Steel with 30 years of service. In the mid 1980's, he also worked at Jefferson Trucking.
Mr. Drum was a member of the Sons of The American Legion at the American Legion Post 30 in Lorain, and the United Steelworker's Union Local 1104. He enjoyed doing various tasks around his home, especially working in his yard and garden. He was an avid sports fan, and never gave up on the Cleveland Browns. He enjoyed fishing, taking walks and listening to classic rock and roll, his favorite being the band, Pink Floyd.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Rita J. (nee Baumert) Drum, daughters Rachel A Drum, Emily A Drum, Sophia A Drum all of Lorain, sisters Laura Kaspirek, Robin Artidiello both of Lorain, Cindy Dessenberg of Mt. Vernon, Becky Geon of Rockledge, FL; brother Eric Drum of Riverside, CA, his father-in-law, Gene Baumert of Lorain and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call anytime Monday, April 4, 2011 between 2-9 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. The family will be at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. only.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 10:00 am in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave, Lorain, with Father Richard Hudak, celebrant and Deacon Patrick Humphrey assisting.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the St. Anthony's Church or School, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Melvin R. Morgan

Melvin R. Morgan, 68, of Lorain died on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the Lake Pointe Care Center in Lorain following along illness.
Mr. Morgan was born in Lorain on July 12, 1942, the son of the late Walker R and Edith M. (nee Douthit) Morgan. He was a lifelong resident.
He attended Clearview High School. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Service Medal.
He was a member of Church On The North Coast Lorain, and sang in the Choir.
He retired as a crossing guard for the Lorain City Schools, serving more than 10 years.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Mellanese Grayson, a son Kevin Barnes of Lorain, and a sister Elaine Wilkes of CA.
Graveside services will be held at Tuesday, January 25, 2010 at 11:00 am in the Ohio Western Reserve National cemetery, 10175 Rouge Road, Rittman, Ohio 44270 with Rev. Terrence Adamson, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church will officiate.
Services entrusted to the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio.
