Treva Marie Parker
Treva M. Parker, 73, (nee Morgan) passed away on Wednesday morning, March 9, 2011 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following a long illness.
Mrs. Parker was born in Bellevue on June 9, 1937, the daughter of the late Gussie A and Bessie M (nee Thompson) Morgan. She retired in 2000 from SBS Transit with more than 35 years as a school bus driver.
She was especially fond of her dog, Sissy but enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, reading and all animals, as well.
Mrs. Parker is survived by her daughters Michele L (Joe Cipoletta) Tully of Revere, Mass., Roxane M Thomas, Brenda J Franklin, Kelly S ( Robert) Zsigray all of Lorain, 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild, sisters, Gail L Sykuta of Lorain, Linda L ( John) Fields of Oneona, NY
In addition to her parents, She was preceded in death by a sister Vera M Bilewicz and a brother Richard Morgan.

Dieter R. Preece
Dieter R. Preece, 64, of Lorain passed away on Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Cleveland VA Medical Center, Wade Park Campus after a courageous battle with cancer for 3 years.
Mr. Preece was born in Furth, Germany on October 5, 1946, the son of the late Marie Henriette Franziska Strobel. He moved to the United States when he was 9 years old to live with his mother, step father and 3 sisters. He became a citizen of the United States on February 24, 1964.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He became a Ranger and served from 1966 - 1969 in Vietnam. He received 2 Purple Heart Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
Mr. Preece was employed at Ford Motor Company and drove semi-trucks for several companies, last working for I.P.C. in Elyria.
He was a member of several social clubs in Lorain, Open Hearth Club, Crystal Rock and the former RussoSlav Club.
Mr. Preece enjoyed model trains, watching the military channel, military history and soul music especially, Marvin Gaye and the Temptations.
He is survived by his friend and companion of 27 years, Mary (Margie) Stahl of Lorain, sisters Lora L. Wolfert of Ft. Meyers, FL, Diana L. Wilson of Grafton, and Terri J. Battle of Elyria and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his step father Tom Preece and his younger sister Karen Preece.
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 from 2 until 7 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. A celebration of Dieter's life will follow visitation at 7:00 PM. Interment will be private.
Charles E. Frick
Charles E. Frick, 89, of Avon Lake, formerly of Lorain, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland following a brief illness.
Mr. Frick was born in Cleveland on September 19, 1921, the son of the late Charles H. and Elizabeth (nee Dobbeck) Frick. He was a graduate of West Tech High School and attended the former Fenn College, now Cleveland State University. He was a graduate of the Carrier Refrigeration School.
He served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1946, as a machinist mate, first class. For two years, he was stationed at Tutuila, Samoa Naval Base. He received a Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, American Area Medal and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Frick retired from the Western Cold Drawn Steel Co., a division of Stanadyne, Inc., as an assistant superintendant of the steel division following 43 1/2 years of service.
He was a member of The Retired Old Boys Club, since 1984 the Lorain Senior Fellowship, and an active volunteer with Community Health Partners Auxiliary for more than 24 years.
Mr. Frick and his beloved wife of 61 years, Vivian, belonged to the Lorain Cosmopolitan Dance Club for 38 years until health reasons forced their retirement. The almost inseparable couple, enjoyed traveling and had visited almost every state in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. Also much of Canada, Mexico, South America, the Panama Canal, about 13 European countries and many of the Caribbean Islands had been visited on their adventures together.
He was very enthusiastic about playing golf, photography and gardening. When the weather turned detrimental, he enjoyed working in his home work shop.
Mr. Frick is survived by his daughter Pamela F. (Richard) Frick Hansen of Englewood, CO, son Kenneth C. (Diane) Frick of Grafton, grandsons Timothy Hansen, Daniel Frick and a granddaughter Jill Hansen.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Frick was preceded in death by his wife Vivian L. (nee Hecker) Frick on November 8, 2007.
A Celebration of His Life will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, with Rev. Jimmy Madsen, pastor of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating.
Burial was private in the Ridge Hill Memorial Park cemetery.

Wanda A. Gascoigne
Wanda A. Gascoigne, nee Hemminger, 92 of Lorain died Sunday, February 6th, 2011 at Anchor Lodge Nursing home of natural causes.
preceded in death by her husband Charles (Don) Gascoigne, after fifty-seven years of marriage.
Wanda is survived by son Chuck (Carolee) Gascoigne and daughter Karen (Michael) Gormley. Grandmother of Gwendolyn Gascoigne, Sheri Ann (Greg) Hey and Todd M. Gormley. Great grandmother of Noah and Natalie Hey. Sister of June Knox and sister-in-law of Ann Gascoigne. Aunt, Great Aunt and Great Great Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Wanda lived most of her life on the East side of Lorain until she and her late husband moved into Anchor Lodge Assisted Living in 1996.
Wanda was a life time member of Delaware Avenue Methodist Church, American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 30 and Past President of the Lorain Firefighters Women's Auxiliary. She forever will be remembered with her love of family, neighbors and children. Wanda enjoyed crafts, decorating cakes and her doll collection.
Funeral services will be held on what would have been Wanda's 93 rd birthday, Monday, February 14, 2011 at Lorain Lighthouse Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Rd, Lorain.
Visitation will be at the church from 10:00-11:00 with services following, Reverend Greg Sellers officiating.
Burial will be at Ridge Hill Memorial cemetery, Lorain. A luncheon reception will be held at the church immediately afterwards.
Wanda's children would like to extend heart felt appreciation and gratitude to the caring staff at Anchor Lodge Assisted Living and Nursing Home, members of the Lorain Lighthouse Methodist Church and most grateful to Ella Poplar, Sylvia Buckholz, Roberta and Bill Gormley, who faithfully visited and cared for Mom.

Dorothy M. Gavlak
Dorothy M. Gavlak, 75, (nee Reiner) of Elyria passed away on Monday, June 20, 2011 at the Elyria Regional Medical Center in Elyria, unexpectedly.
Mrs. Gavlak was born on November 6, 1935 in Lorain to the late George Joseph and Lena Mae (nee Clark Reiner).
The former Dorothy M. Armstrong was retired from Moen after more than 30 years service. She was a clerk in the quality control division.
An avid boater, Mrs. Gavlak also enjoyed assembling family photo albums, gardening and painting rocks. She was a loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She is survived by her husband Gerald A. Gavlak, her daughter Gayle A. (William) Kovach of Sheffield Lake, sons; Jeff F. (Wendy) Brandon of Schaumberg, IL, Mark G. (Lori) Brandon of Munster, IN, Robert C. (Maribeth) Brandon of Sheffield Lake, 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and her sister Irene (Larry) Phillips of Massilon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Reiner.

Carol A. Gelman
(1920 - 2011)
Carol Arlyn Gelman died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 7, 2011. She was born Carol Waisbren on May 30, 1920 in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Her parents were Dr. Benjamin and Laura Waisbren. She attended Stephens College in Columbia Missouri, and then the University of Wisconsin where she earned a degree in economics. She served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographic technician and earned the rank of Corporal. She served in London during the period of the "buzz bombs", and she was decorated with two overseas service bars, as well as many other service medals.
In 1946 she married
Jack Edward Gelman and they raised three children in Lorain, Ohio. After the untimely death of her husband in 1962 she earned a masters degree in Reading Education from Case Western Reserve University. Mrs. Gelman taught reading at Durling Elementary School in the Clearview School District. She retired in 1980 and moved from Lorain to Coconut Creek, Florida where she continued to teach part-time and was an avid bridge player. Mrs. Gelman loved to read history and was a keen observer of current affairs. In more recent times she enjoyed "surfing the net."
Mrs. Gelman successfully defeated a major disability due to paralytic polio that lasted most of her life. She overcame this and other major challenges with tenacity, and died peacefully at the age of 91. Carol was self-effacing, beautifully organized, and always relentlessly determined. She was a gifted teacher who changed many lives through education.
She is survived by her three children, Miriam Knight, Dr. Benjamin Gelman (Diane) and Judith Mandile (Patrick), six grandchildren (Brigitte Knight, Jacob Gelman, Emily Gelman Szucs, Allyson Gelman, Charles Mandile, Laura Mandile), and her brother, Dr. Burton A. Waisbren Sr. (Florence).
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer and Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street in Lorain, followed by interment at Salem cemetery, North Ridge Road in Sheffield Township. Rabbi Susan Stone will officiate. Full Military Burial rites will be provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and the VFW Post 451.
A reception will be held afterward at the residence of Mrs. Barbara Evenchik at College Park Manor Apts, 143 East College Street in Oberlin Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the charity of your choice.
Ralph W. Goehring
Educator and Editor
Ralph Warren Goehring of Lorain died February 24, 2011 at almost 85 years of age, at Mercy Regional Medical Center, following a prolonged illness.
He was a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His baccalaureate degree was from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and graduate degree from Penn State University. He retired from the Lorain City Schools after teaching there 31 years. Previously he taught in Pennsylvania. Following retirement he worked in the IRS as Taxpayer Service Representative and in the Technical Referral Section.
Survivors are his wife of almost 60 years, Mary Elaine Goehring (nee Porinchak); three children, Warren John Goehring of Jackson, MI, Karen (Lawrence) Atwood of Columbus, OH, and Kurt Allan Goehring of Mansfield, OH; two grandchildren, Zachary Haldeman and Kevin Haldeman, two step granddaughters Randi (Charles) Maguire and Molly Slater and five step great grandchildren; two nephews and six nieces. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Harvey John Goehring, Sr. and Grace Niebaum Goehring; brothers, Dr. Harvey John Goehring, Jr. and the Rev. Mr. Charles Niebaum Goehring.
He had served as an Elder and Worship Assistant at Zion Lutheran Church; had been President, Vice President and Secretary of the Lorain Education Association; was life member of the Ohio Education Association and National Education Association, and was active in the retired components of each. He served as retired member on the Executive Committee of North Eastern Ohio Education Association. He served as Newsletter Editor of the Ohio Education Association-Retired, the Lorain Education Association and Lorain Education Association-Retired. His volunteer services included working for the Family Service Association of Lorain County, and as a counselor and instructor in IRS's tax assistance program for the elderly for over 20 years.
In World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps at Pavuvu, Banika, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and China. Among his military awards were the Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation with bronze star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with bronze star, Victory Medal World War II, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia clasp, China Service Medal (extended), and Sharpshooter Rifle Badge. He continued as a Life Member of the Marine Corps League, and a member of The Devil Dogs.
Friends will be received at Zion Lutheran Church, 5100 Ashland Avenue, Lorain, OH on Monday, February 28 from 11 - 1. Service will follow at 1p, with the Rev. Kevin Saylor presiding. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park.
