North Ridgeville, OH - Walter Doty Rommel, age 83, of North Ridgeville, Ohio passed away Monday, October 4, 2004 at the North Ridge Health Center, North Ridgeville, following a nine month illness. He moved to North Ridgeville from Rockford, Illinois ten months ago. Walter was born November 29, 1920 in Zumbrota, Minnesota and was raised and educated in Rochester, Minnesota where his family owned an egg and poultry business as well as butcher shops. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe as a paratrooper with the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team. He later served as a part of the 82nd Airborne division. He received the Purple Heart and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Rommel was employed as a computer programmer analyst with Pickens Mather Great Lakes Shipping and later with A.M. International. He and began his career in northern Minnesota, later moving to Cleveland before settling near Chicago. He was a member of the Rockford Congregational Church, Rockford, Illinois and the Genealogical Society in Elgin, Illinois. He enjoyed reading, traveling, classical music, opera and genealogy.
Mr. Rommel is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie R. (nee Knuth); four sons, Donald of Laguna Beach, California; W. David of Benton, Illinois; Douglas (Brenda) of Strongsville, Ohio and Frederick (Judy) of St. Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Anya, Jennee, William, John, Michael, Laura and Katherine. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary-Olive (nee Doty) Rommel.
Friends may call at the Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester, MN Thursday October 7 from 10:00am until time of services at 1:00pm. Rev. _____________________________ will officiate. Burial will take place at the Oakwood cemetery, Rochester.
