John M. Craig, Sr., age 83, of Parma, beloved Husband of 52 years of the late Lillian M. Craig (nee McDicken) who passed away March 11, 2004; loving Father of Margaret V. Johnson (Robert) of Chardon, and John M. Craig, Jr. (Teri) of Parma; dear Grandfather of Sean Craig, Andrew Johnson, and David Johnson; dear Brother of Helen Rae (James, deceased) of Scotland, David Craig (Mae, deceased) of Scotland, and the late James Craig of Scotland; dear Uncle of 4. Born in Fraserburgh, Scotland, he served with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Regiment of the British Army during World War II, before moving to Canada in 1948. He settled in Cleveland in 1950 in order to marry his lifelong partner, Lillian. He was a member of the Bricklayers & Masons Union # 5 and helped build many buildings throughout the Cleveland area. He retired from Republic Steel in 1979. He was a member of the Lion Heart Masonic Lodge No. 633 and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He had a love of poetry and was able to recite hundreds of verses. Dorothy Janet Purdy (nee Friberg) 82 of Avon, passed away, Friday, March 26, 2004 at the Lakewood Hospital, Lakewood, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Purdy, know as Janet to most, was born September 19, 1921 in Chicago, Ill was a descendent of Daniel Boone. She was a graduate of Hinsdale High School in Hinsdale, Illinois in 1940.
Married to George A. Purdy for almost 62 years, she and her husband were avid travelers visiting every continent but Antarctica and going around the world, twice. She once briefly flew a 747 over the Mediterranean Sea and piloted a train in India.
Jan was President of both the Ridge Road Elementary Schools PTA in Parma, OH and the Rocky River High School PTA, Rocky River, OH. She started a pre-school in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. She was also a former President of the Beachcliff Garden Club, Rocky River, OH and the Westside Garden Club in Greeneville, Tennessee.
Jan was honored as a volunteer at the Tusculum College Library in Greeneville, Tennessee where she and George had made their home for 25 years.
Jan was an avid Bridge player and gardener and won awards for her flower arrangements. She raised and rode horses when she and George owned a farm in Lodi, OH in the 1970s. She and George were AFS (American Field Service) Parents in Rocky River during the 1960s, hosting a student (Antonio Corti) from Lecco, Italy, for a year. The friendship has remained strong during the ensuing decades.
While George was with IESC (International Executive Service Corps) working in various developing countries, Jan did volunteer work in each country in which they stayed, including teaching English in Combitore, India and Jakarta Indonesia.
Besides her Husband George A. Purdy, Jan is survived by two sons: George A. Purdy, Jr. (Ruth) of Bay Village and Tom A. Purdy (Linda) of Westlake. Other survivors include grandchildren: Janet Purdy, Geoffrey Purdy (Cindy) Kristin Purdy, Jennifer Leshiem (Ingar), Tom Purdy, Jr. and Christopher Purdy; and great grandchildren: Griffin, Ethan, Tristan and Konrad.
Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 32000 Detroit Rd., Avon, Tuesday, March 30 from 4:00-7:00pm. A memorial service will be held, Tuesday, April 6 at 3pm in the Avenbury Lakes Lodge 34500 Middleton Rd., Avon, OH 44011, located in the Avenbury Lakes Development. Cremation is by the Busch Crematory. Interment will take place in the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and cemetery in Greenville, Tennessee. FAIRVIEW PARK, OH – William James Peacock, Jr., 51, of Fairview Park passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at his home following a sudden illness. He was born December 11, 1952 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and lived most of his life in Fairview Park. He attended Fairview Schools and was a graduate of Kiskimenitis Prep School near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended the University of Southern Florida and the University of North Carolina. He was employed in the restaurant and food business. He was a captain in the Air Force and was stationed in Korea from 1976-1979. Mr. Peacock coached youth baseball in Fairview and was a youth soccer fan. He enjoyed golfing and fishing. Mr. Peacock is survived by his wife, Anne Marie (nee Abbott); his children, Sean (Erin) of Parma, Jason of Cleveland, Allison of Spencer and Jamie of Fairview; 2 grandchildren; his father, William J. Peacock, Sr. of Avon Lake; a brother Gary (Jeanne) of Avon Lake; a nephew and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy (nee Stingel); and a sister, Nancy Beth Peacock.
