Apple Valley, OH- Arthur Lake, age 74, of Apple Valley, Ohio and formerly of Avon Lake passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Knox County Community Hospital, Mt. Vernon, Ohio following a sudden illness. Mr. Lake was born December 25, 1929 in Cleveland and moved to Apple Valley ten years ago coming from Avon Lake where he resided for thirty years. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was employed as a Tree Warden for the City of Cleveland and retired as a supervisor of the West Side Shade Tree Division in 1984. While a resident of Avon Lake he served on the zoning board and was a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, Avon Lake; and the Lorain Golden Crescent Chorus, Barbershop Quartet; and was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post 211, Avon Lake. He was also a member of the East Knox Lions Club and the Apple Valley Lake Committee and fishing club. Arthur enjoyed boating, traveling and outdoor activities.
Mr. Lake is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lillian (nee Bossell); a son, Arthur A. (JoAnne) of New London, Ohio; a granddaughter, Mary Jo; a great-grandson, Easton and a niece and nephew, Karl and Karen Reinbolt. He was preceded in death by his mother, Olga Holm, father Oscar Lake and step-father Lawrence Holm; and a sister, Bertha Reinbolt.
A memorial service will be held Friday December 17 at the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd. at 11:00am. Rev. Kelly Boyte Peters, pastor, will officiate. Stephen Gary Yano, 22, passed away on Tuesday, December 7th in Dayton, Ohio. He was formerly of North Ridgeville, Ohio.
Stephen was born on June 22nd, 1982 in Cleveland. He was baptized at St. Stephen Catholic Church. After moving to North Ridgeville in 1987, he attended North Ridgeville City Schools through the ninth grade. He graduated from Elyria Catholic High School in 2000 where he participated in the National Honor Society, Cross Country Track (State), Youth Theological Institute, People to People Student Ambassador Program to Western Europe, and Buckeye Boys State.
Stephen was a Senior Honors Student at the University of Dayton (2000-2004). He was to graduate in May with Bachelor’s Degrees in Economics, Spanish, and International Studies with a concentration in Human Rights and a minor in Political Science. He had plans to attend law school.
In 2001, he attended the United Nations World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa. He attended Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco from May-June 2002. He attended Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii from August-December 2002.
Stephen’s Senior Honors Thesis focused on Street Children in Latin America: Education and Advocacy as the Rubicon of Change. From January-June 2004, he was a legal research volunteer and conducted on-site work, study, and interviews at Casa Alianza in Costa Rica. Throughout July, he conducted interviews in Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico.
Stephen was a Notary Public for the State of Ohio, a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society for Economics, Retreat Leader on Homelessness Awareness (Urban Plunge), and Monster.com’s Diversity Leadership Program Validation Ambassador at Catholic University of America. He participated in American Cancer Society Relay for Life, was a Panel Speaker at UD Scholar Symposium, UD Amnesty International Treasurer and Diversity Liaison, member of College Republicans, and JACL Midwest District Youth Co-Chair. He narrated and interviewed for a documentary broadcast on PBS and was an extra in the film Double Dragon. He was one of 14 Dayton Neighborhood Fellows, responsible for developing ‘community’ among his neighborhood residents.
Stephen’s awards included being named the US State Department Gilman International Scholar, Truman Scholarship finalist, Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Finalist, National Dean’s List, JACL Community Service Award, National JACL Scholar, Plain Dealer/CVS Celebration of Champions Medal, and Academic All-Ohio Cross Country.
He was fluent in many languages including Advanced Spanish and Elementary Italian, Arabic, and Japanese.
Stephen was devoted to the concept of helping to make a positive difference in the world. He cared so deeply for others. In addition to spending countless hours working to change the world, he loved traveling, listening to music, playing Frisbee, running, planning gatherings, and being with his family and friends.

Stephen is survived by his parents, Mary Lou (nee Young) and Gary Yano; brothers, Eric and Dan Yano; sister Bridget Hahn (Jason); and grandfather, Harold Young. He was preceded in death by grandparents Ann Young, Fred and Mary Yano.
Stephen’s family will receive friends at the Busch Funeral Home, 7501 Ridge Road, Parma, Ohio, 44129 from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Sunday, December 12, 2004, where a Christian Wake Service and a time for remembering Stephen will be observed at 8:00 PM.
