Gertrude Waugaman
Gertrude Waugaman, 89, of Lakeland, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Lakeland Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Washington Court House, Ohio, and was a Medina County resident for many years. Mrs. Waugaman was the founding member of St. Philip and James Catholic Church. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Waugaman was the beloved wife of her first husband, the late James Waugaman Sr., and her second husband, the late Kenneth Waugaman; loving mother of James (Janet) Waugaman and the late Martina Blazejewski; stepmother of Karen (Bill) Taylor; sister of Harold Schafer; loving grandmother of 10; and great-grandmother of 17.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Patrick Waugaman.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Philip and James Church, 3727 Bosworth Road, Cleveland.
Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park.
Visiting hours: 6 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Carlson, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, 1642 Pearl Road, (one-half mile south of state Route 303), Brunswick, and one-half hour prior to the Funeral Mass at the church.
Dora M. Akers
Dora Mae Akers, 82, of Polk, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Samaritan Hospital in Ashland.
She was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Maybeury, W.Va., to Walter and Emma (Carden) Stowers. Mrs. Akers was a homemaker and a member of Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her husband, Andrew L. Akers, whom she married on July 17, 1942; sons, Jerry (Betty) Akers of Litchfield Township and Tom Akers and Raymond (Vicki) Akers, both of Polk; daughters, Lila (Norman) Haney and Betty (Robert) Travis, both of Lodi, Susan Getson of Ashland and Ronda Bragg of Springfield; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Annie Shaddle of Austinville, Va., Maybel Wade of Bluefield, W.Va., Ruth Keith of Radford, Va., and Fanny Stowers of Polk; and brother, Berman Stowers of Austinville, Va.
Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel. The Rev. Don Thompson will officiate.
Burial: Ashland County Memorial Park.
Visiting hours: 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Dorothy J. Basarab
Dorothy Jean Basarab, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001.
She was born in East Liverpool and lived most of her life in Akron. Mrs. Basarab lived her life as a Christian. She worked at the Portage Hotel and St. Thomas Hospital.
Mrs. Basarab is survived her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Marilyn Basarab of Medina; grandchildren, Erik, Michelle and Phillip; sister, June Daily; and brother, Joe Knepper.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Don and Jim Knepper, and parents, Ralph and Kathryn (Farmer) Knepper.
Service: 3 p.m. Saturday at Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road, Akron. The Rev. Father Russell Rauscher will officiate.
Interment: Rose Hill Burial Park.
Visiting hours: 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Hilda R. Chapman
Hilda R. Chapman, 84, of Medina, formerly of Lodi, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Medina General Hospital, following a brief illness.
She was born June 18, 1916, in Chatham Township to Grover and Faye Frank Rumbaugh. She lived in Lodi most of her life, residing the past 1½ years in Medina. Mrs. Chapman was employed as a nurse at Lodi Community Hospital for many years and was a member of Lodi First Congregational Church.
She is survived by her sons, Jerry (Judy) Chapman of Lodi and James (Pat) Chapman of Medina; grandchildren, Tracy Stoll, and Terri, Kristin, Laura and Erin Chapman; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Justin Stoll.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, in 1989, and sister, Jane Butdorf.
Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Parker & Son Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi. Pastor Stephen McLaughlin of Lodi will officiate.
Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery, Lodi.

Fred J. Cogar
Fred J .Cogar, 84, of Webster Springs, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Cogar was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Webster Springs and lived most of his life in Webster County. He attended Elk Valley Chapel in Webster Springs. He was a coal miner and laborer and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, 155 McGraw, Webster Springs. Pastor Cofer Cochran and the Rev. Minter Lynch will officiate.
Burial: West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin, W.Va.

Dillard D. Lester
Dillard D. Lester, 70, of Medina, passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at home, following a short illness.
He was born April 9, 1930, in Lake, W.Va., to Dennie and Alie Lester and was a Medina County resident for 45 years. Mr. Lester retired from Ford Motor Co. and belonged to United Auto Workers Local 1250.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dale Lester (nee Holton); son, Dillard Lester Jr. of Medina; daughters, Robin (Terry) Powers of Medina and Deanna (Bob) Sanborn of North Royalton; grandson, T.J. (Jessica) Powers of Medina; granddaughter, Rachel (Dan) Gibbs of Medina; great-granddaughter, Marlayna Powers; brother, Charles Lester of Hewitt, W.Va.; sisters, Hazel Nichols of Lake, W.Va., and Dillie Wallen of Ripley, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
Service: 1 p.m. Monday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St. Therman and Dallas Wallen will officiate.
Burial: Spring Grove Cemetery, Medina.

Helen M. Somogyi
Helen M. Somogyi (nee Toth), 88, of Medina, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Cleveland and was a Medina County resident for more than 50 years. She and her husband were the owners and proprietors of the popular Mickey's Family Tavern on Bronson Street in Medina. Helen touched the lives of many people and was a very caring and giving person. She enjoyed hosting family reunions and loved dogs, including strays she would feed and shelter. She was a member of York United Methodist Church and, until recently, was active in church activities.
She is survived by her sisters, Mary (Louis) Trenka of Mentor, Irene (Joe) Cala of Orange, Ohio, and Isabell (Tom) Hegedus of Covina, Calif.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey Somogyi.
Service: 10 a.m. Jan. 27 at York United Methodist Church, 6566 Norwalk Road, Medina.
A short graveside service at York Township Cemetery will follow and then a luncheon to be served at the church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to York Methodist Church in the name of Helen M. Somogyi.

Ronald Cutre
Ronald Cutre, 64, of Seville, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001.
He was born June 5, 1936, in Cleveland and was employed as a pipe fitter. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Cutre was a loving father.
He is survived by his sons, James (Mary) Cutre of Strongsville, Chris (Karen) Cutre of Brunswick and Jeff (Tammie) Cutre of Akron; daughters, Debbie (Kevin) Hughes of Medina, Shelly DeHart of Brunswick and Maria Cutre of Cincinnati; sisters, Geraldine Sharky and Janice Miterko, both of Parma, and Bonnie Papson of Seven Hills; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita, in 2000.
Service: 7 p.m. Friday at Carlson, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, 3477 Medina Road (at River Styx Road), Medina. Father Ronald Bryda will officiate.
Burial: Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.

Helen M. Jackson
Helen M. Jackson (nee Tache), of Florida, formerly of Lodi, has passed away.
Mrs. Jackson was the dearest mother of Albert (Ethel), Howard (Frosine), Mary Ann (Robert) Gasior and Frederick. She was a loving grandmother; great-grandmother; and great-great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert, and son, William.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Church, 5204 Northcliff Ave., Cleveland.
Interment: Brooklyn Heights Cemetery.
