Faye States
Faye States, 82, of Crothersville, Ind., passed away Monday, June 10, 2002, at her daughter's home in Medina.
She was born March 1, 1920, in Crothersville to Henry G. Kiewitt and Lennie F. Nehrt Kiewitt. She was a retired registered nurse, working at Scott County Memorial Hospital for 23 years. Mrs. States was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Indiana University Alumni Association, UCC Women Guild, the Ladies Bible Class and Crothersville Senior Citizens Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Paul (Joan) McMahon of Medina; granddaughter, Erin McMahon of Osseo, Mich.; and sisters, Mildred Davis of Reddington, Ind., and Eva Kiewitt of Bloomington, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. "Bill" States on Jan. 14, 1993, whom she married Oct. 3, 1942; parents; and granddaughter, Shannon McMahon.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 104 N. Kattman Ave., Crothersville. The Rev. Bud Walther will officiate.
Burial: Crothersville Cemetery.
Visiting hours: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home, 110 E. Howard St., Crothersville, and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Joseph S. Barna Sr.
Joseph S. Barna Sr., 82, of Troy, Ohio, passed away Monday, June 10, 2002, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
James V. Edwards
James V. Edwards, 77, of Varney, W.Va., passed away Sunday, June 9, 2002, in Varney.
He was born May 10, 1925, in Carrie, Va. Mr. Edwards was employed as a foreman for General Motors for 28 years. He graduated from Burch High School in 1943. Mr. Edwards loved fishing and hunting and spent numerous hours in the outdoors teaching his daughters and grandchildren to enjoy his passion. He served in the Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his previous wife of 48 years, Nettie J. Stepp of Medina; daughter, Debbie K. (Randy) Ferguson of Cabot, Ark.; grandchildren, Sgt. James (Donna) Ferguson, Sgt. James (Bridgette) Allred, Spc. Justin (Heather) Ferguson, Courtney (Matt) Dale and Jarrod Ferguson; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Edwards and Marie (Richard) Hess, both of Varney, Carol (Phillip) Grinite of Yipslanti, Mich., and Joyce (David) Kirk of Lansing, Mich.; brother, Howard (Evelyn) Edwards of Millersburg; and close friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his daughters, Jaynie Renaye Edwards and C. Verlettia Allred, and son, James Verl Edwards.
Service: 1 p.m. Friday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St. The Revs. Leon Brown and Fulton McCourt will officiate.
Burial: Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.

Nickolas Fetzer
Nickolas "Nick" Fetzer, 83, of Medina, passed away Monday, June 10, 2002, in Medina.
He was born July 7, 1918, in Austria and was a self-employed masonry contractor. Mr. Fetzer was a former Montville Township zoning inspector and a member of Medina United Methodist Church and Apostolic Christian Church. At one time he enjoyed barbershop singing. He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Fetzer is survived by his daughters, Trudine Dale (Norman) Lemire of Findlay, Elaine Ruth (George Gill) Fetzer of Germantown, Tenn., and Phyllis Rae Fetzer of Columbus; son, Leslie Keith (Debbie) Fetzer of Perrysville, Ohio; stepsons, Fred (Jane) Phillips of Turtletown, Tenn., Larry (Sandy) Phillips of Medina and William (Bobbie) Phillips of Gilmer, Texas; sisters, Helen Demiter of Wadsworth, Louise Kemp of Medina, Theresa Keiper of Lexington, Ohio, and Katherine Spengler of Akron; brother, John Fetzer of Medina; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth L. (nee Boyd); second wife, Elsie L. (nee Whitwright); brothers, Fred, Frank and Christian; sisters, Margaret, Irma and Esther; and son-in-law, Jim Pinkston.

Elizabeth K. Rief
Elizabeth K. "Betty" Rief, 55, of Brunswick, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2002, at her residence.
She was born May 14, 1947, in Seven Hills and was a lifelong resident of Medina County. She worked in housekeeping at Forest Hills Management Group for several years and enjoyed taking care of her children.
She is survived by her sons, James (Wendy) Rief Jr. of Brunswick and Steven (Tammie) Rief of Florida; brothers, John Kollar, Robert Kollar and William (Diane) Kollar, all of Brunswick; sisters, Anna Kollar of Texas, Mary (Rick) Oster of Cleveland, Margaret Kollar of Texas and Millie (Harold) Lucci of Twinsburg; and grandchildren, Daren, Dylan and Dana, all at home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Mary Kollar, and brother, Andrew.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 929 Pearl Road, Brunswick.

David J. Avery
David J. Avery, 57, of Brunswick, passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his residence.
He was born July 10, 1945, in Washington, D.C., and worked as a pipefitter. He was a member of Pipefitters Local 120 and St. Ambrose Catholic Parish. Mr. Avery collected baseball cards and coached several youth teams, including BYS and St. Ambrose. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Vietnam.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice (nee Strancar) Avery of Brunswick; son, Brian Avery of Brunswick; daughters, Jacki (Lance) Churchman of Medina and Kelly (Mark) Brucchieri of Brunswick; father, J. Donald Avery of North Ridgeville; brother, Peter Avery of Strongsville; sister, Dee Guill of Decatur, Ill.; grandson, Hunter Churchman of Medina; granddaughter, Taryn Brucchieri of Brunswick; and a grandchild to be delivered into this world at any moment.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Adeline (nee Grams) Avery.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Parish, 929 Pearl Road, Brunswick.
Interment: Resurrection Cemetery, Valley City.

Harriet T. Smith
Harriet Toni (nee Franz) Smith, 71, of Brunswick, previously of Johnstown, Pa., passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights.
She was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Johnstown and was a 40-year resident of Brunswick. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, baking and decorating the home. She worked in retail clothing for 20 years, retiring in 1984.
She is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth Smith of Brunswick, and sons, Paul Smith and Joseph Smith, both of Califiore, Fla. She was the loving grandmother of many.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Gloria Parker.
Mrs. Smith will be cremated at the family's request.

John A. Staub
John A. Staub, 83, of Medina, beloved husband and father, went home to his dear Jesus on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002.
He was born June 30, 1919, in Gaylord, Kan. He spent five years in the Army, two of those in the European Theater during World War II as a locomotive engineer.
John will be so very sadly missed by his wife of 57 years, Betty; son, John P. (Erin) Staub of Valley City; daughters, Diane Donato of Columbus and Deborah (Joel) Bartell of Cleveland Heights; and grandchildren, Megan and Sean Donato of Columbus and Hannah Bartell of Cleveland Heights.
Service: Noon on Tuesday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St. Pastor Terence Tousley will officiate.
Burial: Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.

Jeanette E. Beal
Jeanette Evadna Beal, 89, of Wellington, passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Allen Medical Center in Oberlin.
She was born June 11, 1913, in Lagrange and lived all her life in the Wellington area. Jeanette was a graduate of Penfield schools. She was employed as a cafeteria worker for Wellington and Penfield schools for 15 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Wellington.
She is survived by her sons, Allan H. Beal of Medina and Gary W. Beal of Wellington; daughter, Karen J. Webb of Wellington; sisters, Mary Dickason and Harriet Barwinski, both of Wellington; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Raymond Beal; father, Harry S. Underhill; mother, Katherine Adele Underhill (nee Hoadle); and sister, Clarice Norris.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cowling-Truman Funeral Home, 218 Herrick Ave. East, Wellington. The Rev. William E. Buckeye of First United Methodist Church will officiate.
Interment: Greenwood Cemetery, Wellington.
Visiting hours: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Merlin E. Byrd
Merlin E. Byrd, 76, of Brunswick, passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Firelands Campus in Toledo.
He was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Gilmer County, W.Va. He was a graduate of Glenville State College and a member of Kappa Sigma Kappa, Rush Lodge of Traders and Confidence Degree, Order of the Eastern Star Medina Chapter 266, Ohio Grand Council Order of High Priesthood, Medina Commandary 84 Knights Templar, Medina Lodge 58 Masons and Grand Council Royal and Select Masons of Ohio Wooster Council 13. He was the 1998 past high priest Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons Medina Chapter 30 and a previous member of Brunswick Lions and Brunswick Eagles 3505. He attended Brunswick United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and fruit canning. Mr. Byrd was a general manager for Goodyear, Akron and Snow Road locations, for 37 years, retiring in 1989. He served in the Navy Reserve for four years and the Navy for four years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette (nee Zajdek) Pawlicki Byrd of Avon; son, Andrew (Kristy) Byrd of Medina; daughters, Margaret (Melanie) Roberts-Byrd of Homer Township and Kimberly (David) Lucas of Cleveland; stepdaughters, Valerie (Dan) DiFranco of Brooklyn Heights, Carol Bianchi of Brunswick and Diane (Stephen) Altier of Richfield; sister, Jean (Paul) McClintock of Massillon; grandchildren, Chloe Byrd, Sarah Lucas, Ricardo Roberts-Byrd, Aaron Roberts-Byrd, Angie Bianchi, Tony Bianchi, Luke DiFranco, Tricia DiFranco, Patrick Altier and Stephanie Altier.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Leone E. (nee Lang) Byrd.

Robert D. Grant
Robert D. Grant, 74, of Medina, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Medina.
He was born Sept. 29, 1928, in St. Louis and was a Medina County resident for many years. He had a lifelong career in sales. Mr. Grant was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, enjoyed golfing and reading and loved his family and grandchildren. He was known as Pop-Pop to all his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Sara (nee Dale), to whom he was married 53 years; daughters, Debbie K. (David) Ammons of Yardley, Pa., Dianne M. Grant of Medina, Dana L. (Bill) Booth of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Cindy A. (David) Jaeger of Medina; grandchildren, Grant, Blake and Lindsay Ammons, Ryan Lindsay and Alyssa Sponaugle, Haley Booth, and Mike, Andrew and Megan Jaeger; and brother, Richard V. (Josie) Grant of Denver.
