Norbert Kerner
Norbert J. Kerner, 82, 918 N. Walnut St., Celina, died at 5:28 a.m. March 22, 2001 at Community Hospital, Coldwater.
He was born July 10, 1918, in Glandorf, to Mathew and Mary (Merschman) Kerner. On June 7, 1947, he married Pauline Schmitz, who died May 1, 1999.
Survivors are a daughter and her husband, Elaine and Dennis Marbaugh, Celina, and two granddaughters.
Deceased are two brothers and three sisters.
He was retired as a receiving clerk from the former Mersman Brothers Furniture Co. in Celina, and was a Corporal with the U.S. Army during World War II. He served on the board of trustees at Fraternal Order of Eagles, Mercer Count Board of Elections, as treasurer for the Mercer County Democratic party, and as financial secretary for Union Local 220. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and served on its finance committee and was a member of its Men's Society, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post, and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, all of Celina.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Monday at the church, the Rev. Richard Riedel officiating. Burial is at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Celina.
Calling is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Lehman Funeral Home, Celina.
Marie Sommer
Marie E. Sommer, 93, 16555 Kettlersville Road, Kettlersville, died at 8:40 a.m. March 21, 2001 at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
She was born Feb. 13, 1908, in Osgood, to Stephan and Mary (Winner) Bergman. On Sept. 29, 1929, she married Aloys H. Sommer, who died Nov. 26, 1974.
Survivors are three sons and their wives, Richard and Mary Ann of Bowling Green, Ky., Aloys Jr. and Marilyn of New Bremen, and Albert and Marilyn of Sidney; a son, Donald of Anna, a daughter and her husband, Dorothy and Urban Bertke, New Bremen, a daughter, Marilyn Heyne, Coldwater, a sister, Henrietta Thobe, Anna; 25 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Deceased are a daughter-in-law, Maryann, and four great-grandchildren.
She was employed at Sieberling Rubber, and was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster, New Bremen Senior Citizens, and St. Michaels Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John, Fort Loramie.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. William Hoyng officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Calling is 3-8 p.m. Friday and 9-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster.

James Spettel
James D. Spettel, 63, 1296 Hillside Drive, Greenville, died at 7:25 p.m. March 20, 2001 at Kettering Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 12, 1937, in Dayton, to Ralph R. and Helen C. (Conley) Spettel. On Nov. 10, 1962, he married Midge Jacob, who survives in Greenville.
Other survivors are a son and his wife, Matt and Karla of Greenville; three daughters and their husbands, Rene and Kevin King, Van Wert, Cheryl and Ted Jay, Greenville, and Kris and Todd Huston, St. Henry; a daughter, Susie Lyme, St. Henry; a brother, Tom of Kettering; and 12 grandchildren.
Deceased are his parents.
He was retired from Fram-Honeywell Corp., Greenville, and was employed at Arcanum Hardware Store. He served as vice-president of Darke County Shrine Club, and was a member of Greenville Masonic Lodge 143, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite-Valley of Dayton, and Antioch Shrine of Dayton.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenville, Brother Tom Bohman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. and a Masonic memorial service conducted by the Greenville Masonic Lodge at 7:45 p.m. followed by the Ring Degree Service.
Contributions can be made to the Shriner's Hospitals for Crippled Children.
John Davis
John R. Davis, 79, 227 Clime, Delphos, died at 6 a.m. March 23, 2001 at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 19, 1921, in Celina, to Ritchie and Winifred (Foster) Davis.
Survivors include two sons, John L. of Edwardburg, Mich., and Michael of Martinez, Calif.; a daughter, Becky Panko, Sewaren, N.J.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was a retired bus driver for Western Greyhound Lines, and was a United States Marine Corporal during World War II. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lima.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
There will be no visitation.

Verona Miller
Verona R. Miller, 91, 11230 Circle Drive, Otterbein Retirement Community, St. Marys, died at 5:11 p.m. March 22, 2001 at her residence.
She was born May 27, 1909, in New Bremen, to Bernhard and Alice (Fricke) Schaefer. On March 9, 1931, she married Jesse Miller, who died Dec. 27, 1990.
Survivors are a daughter-in-law and her husband, Beverly and Ralph Plattner, New Bremen; a sister, Verdella Schaefer, New Bremen; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a step great-grandchild.
Deceased are a son, Don R., a brother, Alton Schaefer, a sister, Helen Schaefer, a grandson and a great-grandson.
She was a homemaker and member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, St. Marys.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen, the Rev. Patricia Minnick officiating. Burial is at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.
Calling is 3-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Steven Otting
Steven Joseph Otting, 43, of East Alton, Ill., died of an apparent heart attack at 2:12 p.m. March 15, 2001 at Alton Memorial Hospital in Illinois.
He was born May 19, 1957, in St. Marys, to Paul B. and Mary Ann (Schlosser) Otting. His mother survives in Minster.
Other survivors are a son, Jasper of Wood River, Ill.; two brothers, Jerry of East Alton, and Roland of Union City, Ohio; two sisters and their husbands, Linda and Larry Powers, New Bremen, and Rhonda and Gary Coverstone, Anna; a fiancee, Beverly Herrin, East Alton, and a grandson.
Deceased are his father and two brothers, Daniel and Ricky.
He was a self-employed contractor.
Memorial services were held in Wood River, Ill.
Contributions can be made to the grandson's trust fund.
L. Snow Wood
L. Snow Wood, 50, 16751 Deam Road, Sidney, died of an apparent heart attack at 1:40 a.m. March 21, 2001 at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Sidney.
She was born Dec. 12, 1950, in Lancaster, England, to William and Joan (McNeil) Wood.
Survivors include a stepfather, Paul Mescher, Celina, and a brother, William of Burke, Va.
Deceased are her parents and a sister.
She had worked at Steineke Home Improvement Co., Piqua.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Cromes Funeral Home, Sidney, the Rev. Ronald Harrison officiating. Burial is at Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco.
Calling is from 1 p.m. until time of services Monday.
