Alvin Wiest
Alvin P. Wiest, 77, 102 Debra Drive, Botkins, died at 12:02 p.m. May 8, 2003, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
He was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Botkins, to Dr. Max and Josephine Middendorf Wiest.
Surviving are two sisters, Marjorie Young, Centerville, and Marilyn (Gifford) Solem, Miamisburg; and a sister-in-law, Betty Wiest, Bushnell, Ill.
Deceased are three brothers, Urban, Vernon and Harold, and a sister, Dorothy.
He was the former owner of Home Service Dry Cleaners in Minster and Botkins. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served as a cook aboard ship during World War II. He was a 1944 graduate of Botkins High School and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Botkins, where he was a Mass coordinator and altar server. He also cared for the church yard and cemetery over the years.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, the Revs. Patrick Sloneker, Jim Trick and Jim O'Connor officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Long and Folk Chapel of Bayliff and Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta.

Mildred Berkenstock
Mildred M. Berkenstock, 90, of Germantown, died May 5, 2003, at Friendly Nursing Home, Germantown.
She was born Dec. 29, 1912, in Dayton, to Bert and Leona Heide. In August 1933, she married the Rev. Paul Berkenstock who is deceased.
Surviving are a son, Richard (Polly) of Coldwater; a daughter, Margaret (Dr. Noel) Watson, Germantown; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Germantown, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Memorial services are noon Saturday at the church, the Rev. Larry Grunden officiating.
Calling is 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Pauline Sorgen
Pauline E. Sorgen, 91, formerly of 8828 Chautaqua Blvd., Lakeview, died at 10:05 a.m. May 7, 2003, at Valley Nursing Home, St. Marys, where she had resided the past 11 years.
She was born Jan. 29, 1912, in Hardin County, to Samuel and Roda Sampson Weber. Her first husband, Cecil Owings, died in 1937. On April 21, 1939, she married Marion Sorgen who died June 17, 1994.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet (William) Suchland, Trotwood, and Cecelia (Robert) Anderson Carvalho, Columbus; two sisters, Virginia Thomas and Fairie Driscoll-Koehl, both of Kenton; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Deceased are a son-in-law, Robert Anderson; five brothers, Arthur, Bryan, Norman, Harold and Paul Weber; and five sisters, Ruth Yoakum, Nourma Binkley, Ina White, Estella Flescher and Esther Hissong.
She retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in St. Marys and she and her husband formerly owned and operated Polly's Cottages on Orchard Island at Indian Lake. A homemaker and a Dola High School graduate, she was a member of Wayne Street United Methodist Church, St. Marys.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. David Woodyard officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at the Dunkirk Cemetery.
Calling is after 11 a.m. Saturday at the high school.
Adeline Huelsman
Adeline Huelsman, 89, of Celina, died at 12:55 a.m. May 6, 2003, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.
She was born May 27, 1913, in Cranberry Prairie, to Joseph and Philomena Huwer Quinter. On May 27, 1936, she married Louis C. Huelsman who died Dec. 11, 1994.
Surviving are a son, Louie H. of Celina; a daughter, Margie, also of Celina; four brothers, Rudolph (Agnes) Quinter, Minster, Albert (Dorothy) Quinter, Troy, Anthony (Mary Ann) Quinter, Sidney, and Maurice (Dorothy) Quinter, Fort Loramie; five sisters, Dorothy Dresher, Celina, Loretta (Cletus) Huelsman, Dayton, Leona Pleiman, Minster, Edna Lampert, New Bremen, and Pauline Kohler, Botkins; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two brothers, Henry and Robert Quinter, and three sisters, Rosella Ossage, Henrietta Barlage and Stella Klikovits.
She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Celina.
Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. Richard Riedel officiating. Burial will be at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, Celina.

Mary Schmitt
Coldwater native Mary Ann Schmitt, 72, of West Dundee, Ill., died May 6, 2003, at Provena-St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, Ill.
She was born April 24, 1931, in Coldwater, to Clarence and Rita M. Vehorn Fisher. On June 25, 1959, she married Ralph E. Schmitt who survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Michael and Larry of Chicago, Ill., Edward (Lisa) of South Elgin, Ill., and Craig (Kristine) of Littleton, Colo.; two daughters, Mary Jo (Edward) Keogh, Crystal Lake, Ill., and Amy of Palatine, Ill.; a brother, George (Jeannette) Fisher, Coldwater; and six grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, West Dundee.
Funeral Mass is 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee.

Lucille Bollinger
Lucille A. Bollinger, 94, of Rockford, died at 11:45 p.m. May 4, 2003, at Maplewood of Shane's Village, Rockford.
She was born Feb. 14, 1909, in Rockford, to Luther and Maude Brookhart Adams. On Aug. 26, 1929, she married Vilas Bollinger who died Jan. 1, 1991.
Surviving are a son, Richard (Alice) of Berne, Ind.; four daughters, Esther (Denton) McMahn, Huntsville, Ala., Miriam (Donald) Baer, Paulding, Martha (Robert) Bruns, Rockford, and Sharon (Gary) Kimmel, Celina; a sister-in-law, Shirley Adams, Lima; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Deceased are a son, Robert; two grandsons and a great-great-granddaughter.
She attended Rockford United Methodist Church.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford, the Rev. Mike Berne officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Nelle Garman
Nelle Lee Garman, 88, 115 S. County Road, Celina, died at 12:01 a.m. May 5, 2003, at The Gardens at St. Henry.
She was born Dec. 5, 1914, in St. Marys, to Charles and Marie Elizabeth Reiselt Croft. On June 21, 1932, she married Lincoln C. Garman who died April 13, 2001.
Surviving are two sons, Richard K. (Charlene) of Dayton and Dennis E. (Rose Ann) of Hampton, S.C.; a brother, William Croft, Lima; a sister, Mary Caroline (Thomas) Fleming, Woodstock, Ill.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A half brother, Richard Croft, is deceased.
She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Celina.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, Celina, the Rev. Richard R. Riedel officiating.

Shirley Grant
Shirley M. "Sue" Grant, 66, 301 Pershing Drive, St. Marys, died at 3:15 p.m. May 4, 2003, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week while on vacation in Colorado.
She was born Dec. 3, 1936, in Lima, to Clarence and Agnes Walters Spencer. On Dec. 11, 1954, she married Edward Grant who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Ed Jr. (Krissy), Robert (Teresa) and Jack (Terri), all of St. Marys; a daughter, Camela (Donald) Minnich, St. Marys; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Other survivors include two brothers, Robert Spencer, Columbus Grove, and James Spencer, Lima; three sisters, Eunice Rosemeier and Betty Borges, both of Lima, and Delma Newland, Parkerburg, W. Va.; three brothers-in-law, Clifford (Rena) Grant, St. Marys, Orville and Lyle Grant, both of Lima; and a sister-in-law, June (Nemo) Johnson, Deltona, Fla.
Three brothers, Marion, Virgil and Charles Spencer, are deceased.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. Bill Spencer officiating. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.

Vivian Hirn
Vivian H. Hirn, 70, 802 W. Jay St., St. Marys, died May 5, 2003, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 5, 1933, in St. Marys, to Osmond and Ethel Roberts Sawmiller. On Aug. 18, 1951, she married Paul Hirn who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Edward (Deborah) of Celina; a daughter, Pamela (Timothy) Minnich, St. Marys; a brother, Paul Sawmiller, Toledo; two sisters, Ethel Momanee, Toledo, and Wilma Young, Celina; four grandchildren and a stepgrandchild.
Deceased are two brothers, Archie and Orville Sawmiller, and five sisters, Nancy Stevenson, Hortense Chatfield, Pearl Osburger, Quatoria Lawler and Martha Freewalt.
She had worked at Ohio Decorative Products in Spencerville for 20 years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Wayne Street United Methodist Church.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. David Woodyard officiating. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.
