Stanley Clifford
Stanley H. Clifford, 83, 8941 Weitz Road, Celina, died at 5 a.m. June 12, 2002, at his residence.
He was born May 27, 1919, in Celina, to Charles and Anna (Hauter) Clifford. On Nov. 27, 1946, he married Alvina Leugers and she died June 22, 1991.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, Thomas and Marcia of Mendon, and Ken and Amy of Celina; a daughter Sharon Heiser, Celina; a brother, Charlie of St. Marys; two sisters, Mary Beckstedt Grimm of Celina and Thelma Ruppert, St. Marys; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, Gene, and a son-in-law, Carl Heiser.
He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., St. Marys. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Celina.
Funeral Mass is 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Richard Riedel officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Celina.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday and noon-1 p.m. Saturday at Lehman Funeral Home, Celina.

Wilbur Rupert
Wilbur W. Rupert, 82, formerly of 121 Nagel St., St. Marys, died at 6:10 a.m. June 12, 2002, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Dayton, following an extended illness. He had been a patient at St. Marys Living Center since 1995.
He was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Auglaize County, to Alonzo and Alvina (Anders) Rupert.
Surviving are a brother and his wife, Ben and Elaine, a sister, Mary Etta Miller, and a sister-in-law, Marvalee Rupert, all of St. Marys. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Deceased are a brother, Irvin, and two sisters, Ruth Dyer and Katherine Tarter.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a tank crewman in the European and African Theatres during World War II. He was disabled as a result of his military service. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289 and American Legion Post 323, all of St. Marys.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Long and Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. Patricia Minnick officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
Calling is 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Charles Mayhugh Jr.
Charles D. Mayhugh Jr., 50, 101 S. Van St., St. Marys, died at 1:06 p.m. June 13, 2002, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. A cause of death is pending with the Allen County Coroner's Office.
He was born Sept. 24, 1951, in Celina, to C. Doyle and Betty (Chiles) Mayhugh. His father survives in St. Marys.
Other survivors are a son and his wife, Mark and Amanda of Kansas City, Mo., and a son, Matthew, stationed at Whitman Air Force Base, Mo.; a brother and his wife, Garry and Jean Aldridge, Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters and their husbands, Lynn and Harold Walker, Lakeview, and Nancy and Scott Touchstone, Bentonville, Ariz., and a sister, Sharon Trenkamp, Ft. Jennings.
He was a 1969 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a musician and performed in several local bands.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. James Nuhfer officiating. Burial is at Resthaven Memory Gardens near Moulton.

Rev. Howard Lesch
The Rev. Howard Lesch, C.PP.S., 82, of Florida, died at 6:30 a.m. June 14, 2002, in the infirmary at St. Charles Center, Carthagena.
He was born May 30, 1920, in Chicago, to Joseph and Anne Lesch.
Survivors are a brother, James of California; and a sister and her husband, JoAnn and Donald Provenzana, Melrose Park, Ill.
Deceased is a brother, Joseph.
He entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in Sept. 1933 and was ordained Dec. 10, 1944 at St. Charles Center. He served at various parishes including Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Denver, Colo., St. Anthony Padua Catholic Church, Park Falls, Wisc., and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dayton.
In 1951, he began as a missionary chaplain with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and remained in the military for nearly 30 years. In 1981, he was named associate director of the Office of Family Life for the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee and preached mission appeals on behalf of Precious Blood missions in Chile, Peru and Guatemala.
A Mass of Christian Burial is 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Center.
Calling is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at St. Charles Center, with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.
Carl Gray
Carl W. Gray, 79, Fairview Drive, Coldwater, died at 11 p.m. June 15, 2002, at Briarwood Manor Nursing Home, Coldwater.
He was born July 12, 1922, in Tompkinsville, Ky., to James E. and Edna (Proffitt) Gray. On Oct. 27, 1957, he married Edith I. Dunn and she survives in Coldwater.
Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Lisa and Keith Morefeild, Columbus; four brothers and their wives, Dennis and Vickie of Mountain Home, Ark., Leroy and Millie of Oakland, Ill., Leon and Pat of Greentown, Ind., and James and Lois of Glendale, Ariz.; a sister, Lennie Deverick, Mesa, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he retired as an electrician from Fort Wayne Truck & Bus. He formerly worked at Dana Corp. and Fisher Body in Marion, Ind., and was a member of Coldwater United Methodist Church.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, the Rev. James R. Sager officiating. Burial will follow at St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Coldwater.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and 10-10:45 a.m. Wednesday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater.

Virgil Judy Jr.
Virgil R. "Jiggs" Judy Jr., 77, 650 Wagner Ave., Greenville, died at 3 a.m. June 16, 2002, at Hospice of Dayton.
He was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Greenville, to Virgil Sr. and Mabel (Hoffman) Judy. His wife, the former Charlotte Faulkner, died March 15, 1987.
Surviving are a son and his wife, Dan and Diane of Cincinnati; a daughter and her husband, Dana and Ed Siefring, New Weston; a sister and her husband, Mary and Philip Manuel, Palestine; a sister-in-law, Betty Judy, South Charleston; and three grandchildren.
Deceased are two brothers, Arthur and Eugene, and a grandson.
He was owner and operator of Judy Typewriter Sales & Service in Greenville for 40 years. He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, where he served as Sunday School superintendent for 15 years and past president of the weekday religious education program. He was a member and past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, past president of the Green Wave Athletic Boosters, past president of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion, all of Greenville. He served as an Elks ritual judge on the state and national level.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zechar-Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, the Rev. David Hawley officiating. Burial will be at Greenville Cemetery with military rites by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard.
Calling is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Elks will conduct a Lodge of Sorrow there at 7:45 p.m.

Iris Meinerding
Iris J. Meinerding, 64, 768 Indiana-Ohio State Line Road, Fort Recovery, died at 2:05 a.m. June 16, 2002, at Community Hospital, Coldwater. Death was due to an apparent heart attack.
She was born Oct. 30, 1937, in Portland, Ind., to Ray and Rosella (Landers) Overla. On March 12, 1955, she married Carl Meinerding Sr. and he died Sept. 20, 1991.
Surviving are four sons and their wives, Carl Jr. and Paula of Versailles, Gerald and Patty of Bryant, Ind., Robert and Elizabeth of Portland, Ind., and Richard and Sharon of Florida, and two sons, David of Baytown, Texas, and Ronald of Portland; a brother, Raymond Overla Jr., Portland; two sisters and their husbands, Darlene and Clyde Smith, Pennville, Ind., and Elaine and Fred Coy Jr., Ridgeville, Ind.; two half brothers, Leonard Smith, Geneva, Ind., and Bud Smith, Portland; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
She was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery.

Laura Thomas
Laura "Sis" Thomas, 81, 16306 Glynnwood-New Knoxville Road, Wapakoneta, died at 4:39 p.m. June 16, 2002, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
She was born June 16, 1921, in St. Marys, to Clarence and Ida (Hoagland) Willoughby. On Nov. 30, 1940, she married Ross Thomas and he survives.
Also surviving are a son and his wife, Don and Nancy of Celina; a daughter and her husband, Nikki and Earl Jones, St. Marys; a brother, Don Willoughby, St. Marys; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Eileen Odetta, and three brothers, Earl, Vernon and Clarence Willoughby Jr.
A 1940 graduate of Memorial High School, she retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., St. Marys. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, St. Marys, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also was a member of the United Methodist Women and a charter member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary 767, both of St. Marys.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, the Rev. James Nuhfer officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Long and Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys.

Ethel Halterman
Ethel M. Halterman, 89, a longtime resident of Decatur, Ind., and a former resident of Otterbein Retirement Community in St. Marys, died at 12:45 p.m. June 16, 2002, at The Gardens of Celina.
She was born May 15, 1913, in Anna, Ill., to Samuel and Hulda (Matthes) Robinson. On Dec. 14, 1930, she married John L. Halterman and he died Nov. 27, 1978.
Surviving are three sons and their wives David G. and Portia of Cape Coral, Fla., J. Scott and Pat of Celina, and Christopher and Brenda of Pittsburgh, Penn.; a daughter and her husband, Julianna and Phil Olden, Hamilton; a brother, Eugene Robinson, Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one stepgrandchild and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Deceased are two sons, John David and David Samuel; a brother, Karl Robinson; a sister, Julia Spires; and a grandson.
She was a homemaker.
Services are 3 p.m. Thursday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, the Rev. Brian Wikoff officiating. Burial will follow at Decatur Cemetery.

Irene Gaerke
Irene Gaerke, 84, Gause Road, Coldwater, died June 18, 2002, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
She was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Coldwater, to Aloys and Eleanor (Wenning) Buschur. On Oct. 28, 1939, she married Jerry Gaerke and he died April 8, 1992.
Surviving are a brother and his wife, Eugene and Caroline Buschur, Coldwater; two sisters, Alma Huwer and Mary Bergman, both of Coldwater; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Harold and Eileen Gaerke, Charlie and Betty Gaerke and Henry and Jan Gaerke, all of Fort Recovery, and a brother-in-law, John Gast, Florida; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Virginia and Robert Tangeman, Maria Stein, and Marcella and Dick Topp, Florida, and seven sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hein, Montezuma, Lorine Forsthoefer, Dayton, Luella Frank, Celina, Dorothy Gaerke, Coldwater, and Mary Ann Homan, Dorothy Gaerke and Lillian Garke-Homan, all of Fort Recovery.
Deceased are two brothers, Arthur and Dan Buschur, and a sister, Margie Gast.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, St. Ann Rosary Altar Society and the Eagles Auxiliary, all of Coldwater.

Betty McCain
Betty M. McCain, 81, of Spencerville, died at 5:55 a.m. June 18, 2002, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
She was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Mercer County, to Gettys and Opal (Fisher) Goodwin. On April 7, 1944, she married Donald J. McCain and he died Oct. 27, 1982.
Surviving are a son and his wife, James R. and Cyndi McCain, Lawrence, Mich.; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.
A homemaker, she worked at the Lima Tank Depot during World War II. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class, both of Spencerville, and the Rambling Ohio Winnies travel trailer club. She also was a longtime member and past grand noble of Ida Rebekah Lodge 391, Spencerville, and a former Cub Scout den mother in the community.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville, the Rev. John G. Medaugh officiating. Burial will follow at Spencerville Cemetery.
