Norman Springer
Norman D. Springer, 74, 315 Morton St., Celina, died at 12:30 a.m. Sept. 5, 2003, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Van Wert, to Lawrence and Edna Parsons Springer. On April 26, 1956, he married Jessie L. Sheets, who died Sept. 27, 2002.
Surviving are three sons, J.D., Mark (Regina) and Kevin (Lori), all of Celina; and six grandchildren.
He was retired after serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5713 and American Legion Post 210.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cisco Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Steve Clayton officiating. Burial will follow at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina.
Calling is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday.
Rose Pfeffenberger
Rose M. Pfeffenberger, 88, 840 Dorothy Lane, St. Marys, died at 2:57 a.m. Sept. 5, 2003, at Lima Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 31, 1915, in St. Marys, to Joseph and Clara Dieringer Axe. On Nov. 15, 1937, she married Louis Pfeffenberger who survives at the residence.
Other survivors are two sons, Michael (Sandra) of Troy and Dennis (Sue) of St. Marys; a daughter, Karen (Michael) Showalter, Lima; a daughter-in-law, Judy of St. Marys; two brothers, Laurence Michael Axe, St. Marys, and Thomas Richard Axe, Kansas City, Kan.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Phil, and six brothers, Francis, James, Vincent, Urban, Cletus and Damian Axe.
She was a 1933 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School. She had worked at the former DWG Cigar factory and the G.C. Murphy Store, both in St. Marys. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, St. Marys, the Altar Rosary Sodality, the Catholic Ladies of Columbia and was one of the original members of the Holy Rosary Label Committee that raised funds for Holy Rosary School.
Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, the Rev. David Heinl officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, St. Marys.
Calling is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, St. Marys.

Rex Fetters
Celina native Rex K. Fetters, 63, of Sylvania Township, died Sept. 4, 2003, at Flower Hospital in Sylvania.
He was born Jan. 19, 1940, in Celina, to Chester and Blanche Howell Fetters.
Surviving with his wife, Shirlene, are a son, Rodney of Celina; three daughters, Russie (Chris) Coleman, St. Marys, Rhonda (Don) Hoying and Rashelle (John) Bigelow, all of Celina; five stepsons, Ronald Roop, Rossford, Dale (Rene) Roop, Florida, Keith (Pam) Roop, Jamie Roop and Kip (Kim) Roop, all of Swanton, and two stepdaughters, Coy (David) Wysong, Sylvania, and Michelle (Billie Adams) Good, Florida.
Also surviving are three brothers, Dick (Rita), Ronnie and Jerry, and three sisters, Jeanette (Chuck) Zimmerman, Pam Kover and Judy Martin, towns not listed; a stepbrother, Hershel (Alphie) Sowders, town not listed; 35 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He had worked at General Telephone and Wikel Asphalt prior to retiring in 2000.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Reeb Funeral Home, Sylvania. Burial will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.

Joan Selzer
Joan J. Selzer, 76, 9860 Day Road, Versailles, died at 10:40 a.m. Sept. 4, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Sidney.
She was born June 4, 1927, in Versailles, to Walter E. and Dorothy E. Smith Swallow.
Surviving are three sons, Robert (Sharon) of St. Henry, Ronald (Denise) of Osgood, and Joseph (Joyce) of Versailles; two daughters, Betty Jo of Greenville and Connie (Roger) Klenke, St. Henry; a brother, William E. Swallow, Yorkshire; a sister, Margie L. Swallow, Versailles; 11 grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
A brother, Gerald R. Swallow, is deceased.
She was a homemaker.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, the Rev. Laura Shreffler officiating. Burial will follow at Brock Cemetery.

Herbert Kohlhorst
Herbert A. Kohlhorst, 82, 1026 Edward St., St. Marys, died at 7:24 a.m. Sept. 3, 2003, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
He was born Feb. 20, 1921, in Waldron, Kan., to Leonard and Eunice Parker Kohlhorst. On Jan. 18, 1948, he married Donna Geotz who survives.
Also surviving are a son, David (Patricia), and a daughter, Denise (Veryl) Cisco, both of St. Marys; two brothers, Marlin (Martha) of St. Marys and Leonard (Rheba) of Montgomery, Ala.; three sisters, Annette (Raymond) Goetz, Spencerville, Dorothy Walden, Clarkston, Mich., and Virginia (James) Wierwille, Celina; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A grandson is deceased.
He retired from the Ohio Division of Parks, where he was responsible for dredging at Grand Lake St. Marys, and was the owner of Herbie's Lures. He previously worked at St. Marys Woolen Mill and Westin Paper Mill, also of St. Marys. He served as a flight engineer aboard a B-24 bomber with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and received the distingquished Flying Cross and Air Medal. He was a member of American Legion Post 323, St. Marys, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772, Spencerville.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, St. Marys, the Rev. Ed Groff officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.

Edward Nieberding
Former Coldwater resident Edward J. Nieberding, 83, of Dayton, died Sept. 3, 2003, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton.
He was born March 27, 1920, near Coldwater, to William F. and Elizabeth Bruns Nieberding.
Surviving with his wife, the former Mary E. Jutte, are four sons, Ed (Michelle), the Rev. Rick and Jack (Kathy), all of Columbus, and Ron (Amy) of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Edna Heitkamp, Celina, and Mary (Bart) Ahlers, Coldwater; and five grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, Ben, and a sister, Bertha Homan.
He worked at N.C.R. in Dayton for 30 years and later in the Dayton Public School System for 10 years. He was a charter member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, Dayton. Dayton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5018 and Trotwood American Legion Post 613. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Rick Nieberding officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton.

Edna Rupp
Former Spencerville resident Edna D. Whitney Rupp, 92, of St. Marys, died at 3:25 a.m. Wednesday at St. Marys Living Center.
She was born July 3, 1911, in Auglaize County, to Harry J. and Minnie O. Coil Schamp. On June 10, 1934, she married Ralph J. Whitney who died Oct. 26, 1957. On June 8, 1968, she married the Rev. Lowell W. Rupp who died July 12, 1979.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph A. (Linda) Whitney, St. Marys, and the Rev. Neal D. (Renee) Whitney, Elida; two daughters, Anita L. (Donald) Barnt, Kenton, and Carol A. (Steven) McMurray, St. Marys; a stepson, Joseph W. (Joan) Rupp, Littleton, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Priscilla M. (George) Otto, Dayton, and M. Sue (Richard) McKnight, Cincinnati; a brother, A. Alfred (Sarah) Schamp, Holland, Mich.; two sisters, Rose Marie Wehmeyer, St. Marys, and Mary Lea (Robert) Hegemeier, Bradenton, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Schamp, St. Marys; 23 grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.
Deceased are three brothers, Kenneth J., H. Burdette and James B. Schamp; two grandchildren and a stepgreat-grandchild.
She had worked as laboratory secretary at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys. A 1929 graduate of Memorial High School, she was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, True-Seekers Sunday School Class and Hawthorne Chapter and Order of Eastern Star, all of St. Marys.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Dale L. Mangen officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.

Herbert Albers
Herbert J. Albers, 90, formerly of 306 Cassella-Montezuma Road, Maria Stein, died at 9:36 a.m. Sept. 2, 2003, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Oct. 8, 1912, in North Star, to Henry and Mary Roetgerman Albers. On Oct. 1, 1938, he married Rose Stucke who is deceased.
Surviving are four sons, Walter (Marge) of Ames, Iowa, Morris (Marlene) of Osgood, Dennis (Len) of Cassella, and Mark (Karen) of Salem, Oregon; a daughter, Patricia (Stanley) Prenger, Anna; a brother, John (Regina) of St. Henry; two sisters, Marcella Burris, Cincinnati, and Joanne Peay, Worthington; 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was a farmer and longtime member of the National Farmers Organization and charter member of the Mercer County Holstein Association. He was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cassella, and it's Men's Sodality.

Richard Bohman
Richard Joseph Bohman, 77, 310 Bohman Drive, Osgood, died at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 1, 2003, at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton.
He was born Nov. 19, 1925, in Osgood, to Joseph and Catherine Ernst Bohman. On Nov. 16, 1950, he married Esther Stucke who survives.
Other survivors are a son, Allen (Elaine) of Osgood; four daughters, Deb (John) Bohman Grueser, Springfield, Kathy (Ken) Bertke, Versailles, Nancy (Dave) Bohman Moore, Powell, and Mary Steenrod, North Canton; three sisters, Florence Raasch, Wauwatosa, Wisc., Oneda (Bill) Horstman, Botkins, and Jo Ann (Ken) Lachey, St. Henry; two brothers, Paul (Kathleen) of Minster, and Ralph (Maggie) of Lancaster, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, Ernest, and a brother-in-law, Fred Raasch.
He was a retired dairy farmer and member of the Darke County Farm Bureau. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Osgood, and its Men's Society. He was a retired member of the Osgood Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. David L. Zink officiating. Burial is at St. Martin's Cemetery.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Thursday and 9-10 a.m. Friday at Gehret Funeral Home, Fort Loramie.

Franklin Hone
Mercer County native Franklin David Hone, 63, 5621 E. North St., Salamonia, Ind., died Sept. 1, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born April 25, 1940, in Mercer County, to Edward and Viola May Lawrence Hone. On April 8, 1961, he married Judith K. Trisel who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Mike of Decatur, Ind.; a daughter, Lisa (Bruce) Manor, Portland, Ind.; two brothers, George (Dorothy) of St. Marys and John (Sandi) of Tampa, Fla.; six sisters, Doris Snyder and Barb (Bob) Thees, all of Celina, Inez (Clyde) Goins, Eaton, Ermal (Valler) Amstutz, Berne, Ind., Mary (Duane) Boroff and Elaine (Bob) Zizelman, all of Mendon; and two grandchildren.
A brother, Carl, a sister, Lori Ann and one grandson are deceased.
He retired as a self-employed utility contractor for area telephone companies after 30 years of service. He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Services are 7 p.m. Thursday at the Portland, Ind., Chapel of Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home, the Rev. Billy Stanton officiating. The Salamonia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post will conduct military rites. Burial will follow at a later date at Salamonia Cemetery.
