Linnie Goodwin
Linnie Lucile Goodwin, 86, formerly of 203 South St., Willshire, died at 7:05 a.m. Oct. 14, 2002, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.
She was born April 20, 1916, near Spencerville, to Orville and Minnie (Barber) Coffman. On Sept. 18, 1937, she married Glenn G. Goodwin and he died Feb. 13, 1988.
Surviving are a son and his wife, the Rev. John O. and Barbara of Van Wert, and a son, Gary A. of Tokyo, Japan; three daughters and their husbands, Phyllis and Ronald Brockmyer, Fort Wayne, Ind., Janet and Fred James, Springfield, and Martha and Palmer Inniger, Indianapolis, Ind., and a daughter, Mary Haddad, Adrian, Mich.; 15 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, a foster grandchild and 17 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers and their wives, Harold and Margie Coffman, Spencerville, and Homer and Eva Coffman, Edgerton; three sisters and their husbands, Mary Jane and Carl Putman, New Haven, Ind., Marilyn and Alfred Emans, Mendon, and Martha and Max Wood, Spencerville; and a sister, Marie Savidge, Celina.
Deceased are a stepmother, Gladys Coffman; two brothers and a sister.
She was a homemaker and a former employee of Decatur Industries in Decatur, Ind. She was a member of the Willshire United Brethren Church and numerous historical societies throughout the area.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. John O. Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow at Wright Cemetery in rural Van Wert County.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Connie Henry
Connie J. Henry, 54, of Greenville, formerly of Versailles, died at 12:01 a.m. Oct. 11, 2002, at her residence. Death was due to natural causes.
She was born Dec. 14, 1947, in Greenville, to Paul and Irene (Rinderle) Henry. Her father and stepmother, Lynn, survive in Versailles.
Also surviving are a brother and his wife, Alan and Jeanie of Versailles, and two sisters and their husbands, Donna and Jim DeMange, Versailles, and Jane and Don Evers, Maria Stein.
She retired as a technical writer and editor at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, and was a volunteer tax preparer for senior citizens. She was a graduate of Versailles High School and Wright State University with a bachelor's degree in business management. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church and Business and Professional Women's Association, both of Greenville, and the Society of Standards & Engineers at Wright Patterson. She also served as assistant treasurer for the Habit for Humanity Board of Directors.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. John White officiating. Burial will follow at St. Valbert Cemetery, Versailles.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville. A prayer service is planned there at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Rev. Charles Johnson
The Rev. Charles H. Johnson, 80, of Scio, died Oct. 12, 2002, at Sunnyslope Nursing Home, Bowerston.
He was born Aug. 17, 1922, in East Liverpool, to William Floyd and Flossie Dale (Reese) Johnson. On Aug. 16, 1943, he married Helen Louise Manbeck and she survives.
Also surviving are a son and his wife, Charles Alan and Jeanette of Medford, Wis.; a daughter and her husband, Charlotte Marie and the Rev. George Johnson, Bucyrus; a brother-in-law, Paul Kerr, Lucerne Valley, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Doris Manbeck Terrano, Tryon, N.C., and Nora Erwin Manbeck, Scio; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, including some who reside in Celina and Wapakoneta.
Deceased are a brother, Paul; a sister, Eileen Kerr; and three brothers-in-law, Virgil Manbeck, Robert Manbeck and Carl Terrano.
He served as a U.S. Navy Seabee in the South Pacific and the Philippines, later joined the the U.S. Army Reserves in Cadiz and retired from the Air National Guard in Mansfield. He initially worked at Scio Pottery before studying at Derstine Christian Retreat School of Ministry and being ordained in Bradenton, Fla. Former pastor of Deersville United Methodist Church, he helped to establish Unto the Least Ministries and Mae's House.
He was a member of Scio United Methodist Church, Scio Civic Club, the Dining Room Ruritans and the American Legion Post.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow at the Evangelical United Brethren Cemetery, New Rumley.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Henry Kohnen
Celina native Henry P. "Hank" Kohnen, 74, died Oct. 14, 2002, in La Habra Convalescent Hospital, La Habra, Calif.
He was born Dec. 17, 1927, in Celina, the eldest son of Henry H. and Rosemary Kohnen. On April 5, 1948, he married Barbara Hicks and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, two daughters, a brother, Donald of Celina; and three sisters, Mary Hart and Rosemary Wilkins, both of Celina, and Ruth A. Vondrell, Leesburg, Fla.
Deceased are a son, Marc, and a brother, David.
Services will take place in California.

Dolores Opperman
Dolores A. Opperman, 68, 8 Elk Drive, New Bremen, died at 3 p.m. Oct. 15, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 16, 1933, in Sidney, to William and Helen (Kloeppel) Schemmel. Her mother survives in Minster. On Oct. 4, 1952, she married Paul Opperman and he also survives.
Other survivors include two sons and their wives, Jeffrey and Denise of New Bremen and Bruce and Rita of New Knoxville; two daughters and their husbands, Elaine and Jim Lampert, New Bremen, and Jane and Kevin Shelly, Indianapolis, Ind., and a daughter, Susan Townsend, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Also surviving are a brother, Ronald Schemmel, New Knoxville; a sister and her husband, Ellen and Dwight Kurtzman, Van Wert; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A 1951 graduate of New Bremen High School, she retired as head cook at New Bremen Schools. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, New Bremen.
Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. Leo Hoying officiating. Burial will follow at German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Vornholt-Miller Funeral Home, New Knoxville, and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Elvira Schmidt
Elvira A. Schmidt, 84, 451 Bernard Ave., St. Henry, died at 1:05 p.m. Oct. 15, 2002, at Briarwood Manor Nursing Home, Coldwater.
She was born Dec. 2, 1917, in St. Peter, to August and Josephine (Weitzel) Ontrop. On April 10, 1937, she married Vincent Schmidt and he died May 3, 1995.
Surviving are five sons and their wives, Clete and Irene of Rockford, Roger and Theresa of McCartyville, Vincent and Carol of Rossburg, David and Alice of Coldwater and Ronald and Linda of Minster; a daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Jerry Knapke, Celina; a brother and his wife, Ernest and Luella Ontrop, Portland, Ind.; 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Joseph; a sister, Esther Link; and a grandson.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Henry Catholic Church and the Rosary Altar Sodality, both of St. Henry, and the Daughters of Isabella, Fort Recovery.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Larry Wyen officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Martha Tullis
Martha A. "Marty" Tullis, 73, of Rockford, died at 1:16 p.m. Oct. 14, 2002, at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.
She was born March 14, 1929, in Van Wert, to Harry Waldron and Icy (Heath) Waldron Bates. On March 14, 1946, she married Joseph Tullis and he survives.
Also surviving are a son, John of Rockford; a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Michael Shrider, also of Rockford; a brother, Bill Waldron, New York, N.Y.; a sister, Madge Eichhorn, Decatur, Ind.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Joseph, and a brother, Harry Waldron.
She had worked as a cook at several area restaurants and participated in several bowling leagues.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. Michael Berne officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Marceil Wenning
Marceil L. "Marcy" Wenning, 59, 14151 Ohio 29, Anna, died Oct. 14, 2002, at her residence following a sudden illness.
She was born Aug. 10, 1943, in St. Wendelin, to Louis and Clementine (Stachler) Schmackers. Her mother survives in St. Henry. On Sept. 14, 1963, she married Kenneth J. Wenning and he survives.
Also surviving are three sons and their wives, Joseph and Terri of Kalida, Jeffery and Tamara of Westerville, and Patrick and Leigh Ann of Dublin, and a son, Scott of New Bremen; and three grandchildren.
Other survivors include five brothers and their wives, Jerry and Janet Schmackers, Maria Stein; Paul and Marilyn Schmackers, Lima; Harold and Vicki Schmackers, St. Sebastian; Elmer and Beth Schmackers, Troy; and Lester and Sue Schmackers, New Bremen; a sister and her husband, Bernice and Garth Workman, Columbus; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Glenn and Renee Franck, New Carlisle.
A sister, Lois Jean, is deceased.
She had owned and operated Marcy's Beauty Shop in Minster since 1973. She was a 1961 graduate of St. Henry High School and a graduate of Tracy's Beauty Academy, Grand Rapids, Mich., where she also taught classes for a time.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Ladies Sodality and the Mission Commission of the church, all of McCartyville; Respect for Life, Get-Tuit, the American Legion Auxiliary of Minster and the Fort Loramie Historical Society. She had served as past president of the Anna Band Boosters and was named volunteer of the year in the Anna School District. She held all offices in the Shelby County Extension Homemakers in addition to serving on the organization's advisory and support committees.

Ralph Fickert
Ralph O. Fickert, 80, 812 Pro Drive, Celina, died Oct. 16, 2002, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.
He was born March 16, 1922, in Mercer County, to Otto and Freda (Schaadt) Fickert. On Nov. 26, 1961, he married Janet Winemiller and she survives.
Also surviving are a son and his wife, Jeff and Tracie of Hollansburg, and a son, John of Lorain; a brother, Roma of Rockford; a sister and her husband, Doris Jean and Don Gerber, Berne, Ind.; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Deceased are a son, Timmy Lee; three brothers, Raymond, Homer and Lloyd; and four sisters, Alvina Trafzer, Esther Noack, Loretta Bollenbacher and Betty Carter.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Celina area and a former member of the Mercer County Harness Horseman's Association.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Donald Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow at North Grove Cemetery, Celina.

Donald Schneider
Donald F. Schneider, 75, 212 S. Franklin St., New Bremen, died at 7:40 p.m. Oct. 17, 2002, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center, Minster.
He was born Oct. 23, 1926, in New Bremen, to Leonard K. and Salome (Timmerman) Schneider. On Oct. 23, 1946, he married Dorothy Rogers and she survives.
Also surviving are four daughters and their husbands, Wanda and Charles Hemmelgarn, Wright City, Mo., Linda and Dennis Shupp, New Knoxville, Myra and Michael Hanenkratt, Minster, and Donna and Bill Culver, Coldwater; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a sister, Leta Cunningham, and a granddaughter.
He retired in 1989 from the former Borden Inc. of New Bremen. A 1944 New Bremen High School graduate, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, New Bremen, and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 241, also of New Bremen.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen, the Rev. John W. Tostrick officiating. Burial will follow at Willow Grove Cemetery, New Bremen.
