Sr. Mary Matilda Bernard
Former St. Henry resident Sister Mary Matilda Bernard, 75, an Ursuline nun, died Oct. 28, 2001 in Cincinnati.
She was born May 26, 1926, to Henry and Matilda Bernard. Her father was former assistant superintendent of the Mercer County Schools.
Surviving are a brother and his wife, John and Tammy Bernard; a sister and her husband, Anne and Ferd Kopp; a sister, Mary Faller; a twin sister, Sr. Mary Henry; a sister-in-law, Emma Lou Bernard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four brothers, Paul, Edward, Richard and Joseph Bernard.
She received a bachelor's degree from the Athenaeum of Ohio and a master's degree in library science from the University of Cincinnati. She was a teacher and librarian before retiring in 1998. She helped manage and subsequently took over management of the Sisters' Gift Shop. She also played the organ for the congregation with her last performance taking place Oct. 26.
Vespers were 4:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by a Funeral Mass at 6:30 p.m. at St. Ursula Convent, Cincinnati. Burial was to be today at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Gilligan Funeral Home, Cincinnati, had charge of arrangements.
Ethel Lively
Former Celina area resident Ethel Mae Lively, 83, Leesburg, Fla., died Oct. 31, 2001 at her residence of cancer.
She was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Russell, Ky., to Frank and Nettie Grace (Shavor) Dowdy. Her husband, Frederic Lively, is deceased.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, Ronald E. and Janet Lively, Celina, and W. Robert and Mary Lively, Enon; a brother, Frank Dowdy Jr., Ashland, Ky.; four sisters, Bessie Lewis, Ashland, Ky., Mary Hamon and Virginia Pancake, Orlando, Fla., and Grace Cogan, Titusville, Fla.; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Burcham Funeral Home, Fairborn. Burial will be in Medway Cemetery.

LaVerne Adams
LaVerne Adams, 75, 7599 E. Fort Recovery Road, Portland, Ind., died at 4:55 p.m. Nov. 1, 2001 at Dayton Heart Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 21, 1926, in Jay County, Ind., to Kenneth and Onda (Jetter) Stump. On Sept. 21, 1950, she married Carl Adams and he survives.
Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Deb and Max Prescott, Ansonia; three brothers and their wives, James and Helen Stump, Fort Recovery, Larry and Mary Jo Stump, Hudson, Wis., and Steve and Audrey Stump, Plymouth, Mich.; a sister and her husband, Jean and Frank Ballard, Portland, Ind.; two brothers-in-law, Lyle Adams, Celina, and Sonny Fair, Troy; a sister-in-law and her husband, Phyllis and Kenneth Wolfgang, Landess, Ind.; and three grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, Robert L. Stump, and a sister-in-law, Grace Fair.
A 1944 graduate of Madison Township High School in Jay County, she retired from Fort Recovery Equity. She was a member of the Stitch & Chatter Quilt Club, Noble Busy Bees Home Extension and Jayland Antique Auto Club, all of Jay County, Fort Recovery United Methodist Church and the Fort Recovery Fire Department Auxiliary.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, the Rev. Kenneth Galdeen and the Rev. Robert Dungan officiating. Burial will be at Salamonia Cemetery, Salamonia, Ind.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Saturday and noon-1 p.m. Sunday at Brockman and Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery.

James Courtney
Former Celina resident James B. Courtney, 53, of Waterford, Mich., died Nov. 2, 2001 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 11, 1947, the son of Paul and Louetta Walter. His mother survives in Celina.
Other survivors include his wife Janine, of Waterford, Mich., a son, Richard; a daughter and her husband, Jeanne and Jeremy Charlick; a daughter, Teresa; two stepsons, Derek and Matthew Berney; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Warren, all of Michigan; five brothers and their wives, Howard and Candy and Richard and Jean Courtney of Rockford, Bill and Kathy Courtney of Delphos, Ron and Ann Gibson of Brazil, Ind., and Steve and Cathy Gibson of Celina; and four grandchildren.
He was a graduate of Parkway High School and served on the USS Pickeral during the Vietnam War. He was retired from General Motors- Lake Orion Assembly in Pontiac, Mich.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Donelson-Johns and Evans Funeral Home in Waterford, Mich.
Following cremation, he will be buried at Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester Hills, Mich., in the veteran's memorial.

Bob Barnhart
Bob D. "Barney" Barnhart, 59, 12399 Fife Road, Van Wert, died at 6:13 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 in Van Wert County Hospital.
He was born on April 1, 1942, in Paulding, the son of Allen and Thelma Barnhart, who are deceased. On Sept. 21, 1962, he married Elaine (Ulam) Barnhart, who survives in Van Wert.
Other survivors include two sons and their wives, Brent and Stacia and Todd and Kim, both of Van Wert; two daughters and their husbands, Tami and Gene Seekings of Van Wert, and Kendra and Dave Smart of Convoy; three brothers and their wives, Allie and Rita of Elida, James and Carol and William and Evelyn, both of Van Wert; two brothers, Harrell and Delbert of Van Wert; four sisters and their husbands, Ellen and Ed Grimes, Janet and Don Riley and Karen and Dennis Stout, all of Van Wert, and Rosalie and Art Miller of Defiance; a sister, Betty Jewel of Van Wert; and six grandchildren,
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Arbadella Coressel, Loretta Radar and Ceola Shindeldecker.
He retired after 40 years as the counter manager at Downtown Drugs in Van Wert and was self-employed as the owner of Barnhart's Rustic Nook in Van Wert. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Church, Van Wert.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Raymond Feeck officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Van Wert.
Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
Magdalene Barber
Former St. Marys area resident Magdalene "Shorty" Barber, 88, Greenfield, Ind., died at 8:40 a.m. Nov. 4, 2001 at Hancock Memorial Hospital, Greenfield.
She was born Sept. 15, 1913, in St. Marys, to Rufus and Rosina (Frank) Skinner. On Dec. 21, 1932, she married Oran Barber who survives.
Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Bill and Barbara of St. Marys and Robert and LaDonna of Dothan, Ala.; a daughter and her husband, Janet and George Grabbe, Greenfield; a brother and his wife, Rufus and Martha Skinner, Lady Lake, Fla.; a sister, Freda Botkin, Wapakoneta; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased are 10 brothers and sisters.
She was a member of St. Marys Nazarene Church until she moved to Florida in 1954. She resided in Safety Harbor, Fla., for 40 years, where she was a homemaker and bookkeeping assistant. She attended St. Marys High School and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Clearwater, Fla.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. John Wine officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Evangelical Methodist Cemetery in Auglaize County.

Waneta Frank
Waneta J. Frank, 78, 2001 Ivy Court, St. Marys, died at 10:07 a.m. Nov. 3, 2001 at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
She was born March 30, 1923, in Noble Township, Auglaize County, to Elvin and Leah (Huber) Schroer. On May 20, 1945, she married Gene Frank and he survives.
Also surviving are a son and his wife, Mike and Judy of St. Marys; two daughters and their husbands, Anita and Bus Melby, Toledo, and Terrie and Russ Burd, Dayton; a sister and her husband, Shirley and Larry Kellermeyer, Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Schroer, St. Marys; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased is a brother, Gene Schroer.
She was a homemaker and a 1941 graduate of Memorial High School, St. Marys. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, St. Marys, where she had served on the Consistory, taught Sunday School, served as a deacon and was a member of the church circle. She was also a former 4-H adviser.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, the Rev. Pat Minnick officiating. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home Grand Lake Chapel, 1605 Celina Road, St. Marys, and 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Bernice Freeman
Bernice M. Freeman, 79, 425 E. Wayne St., Celina, died Nov. 2, 2001 at her residence.
She was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Union City, Ind., to Marion and Clara (Mundhenk) Gordon. On June 30, 1946, she married Chester A. Freeman and he survives.
Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Nathan and Terry of Oregon, and Calvin and Linda of Celina; a daughter and her husband, Denise and Kerry Zuercher, Celina; a sister-in-law, Maxine Gordon, Graford, Texas; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two brothers, Gilbert and Raymond Gordon, and a sister, Esta Saylor.
A graduate of Neptune High School, she attended Celina Church of the Nazarene.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Stanley Gerboth officiating. Burial will be at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina.

Albert Hawkins
Albert L. Hawkins, 74, 537 Touvelle St., Lot 65, Celina, died at 7 a.m. Nov. 3, 2001 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Hickman, Ky., to Johnny Reed and Della (Dean) Hawkins. On Aug. 26, 1971, he married Kathleen Underwood and she died May 19, 1994.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, Bill and Pat of Wabash, Ind., Jim and Linda of Coldwater and Johnny and Deb of Celina; two daughters and their husbands, Diane and Allan Rathburn, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Nancy and Daniel Imwalle, New Bremen; one brother and his wife, James and Autia Mae, Celina; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He retired from New Idea, Coldwater. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, both of Celina.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lehman Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Steve Clayton officiating. Burial will be at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina.

John Topp
John C. Topp, 54, 209 S. Main St., Botkins, died at 4:43 a.m. Nov. 3, 2001 at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, of natural causes.
He was born Sept. 11, 1947, in Sidney, to Carl and Connie (Barga) Topp. On Aug. 27, 1967, he married Kathy Drees and she survives.
Also surviving are a son and his wife, Eric and Christine, Greenville; a daughter and her husband, Angela and Paul Oen, Russia, and a daughter, Patricia Tippie, Minster; three brothers and their wives, Bruce and Clara Topp, Wapakoneta, David and Amy Topp, Bowling Green, Ky., and Robert and Shiela Topp, Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters and their husbands, Linda and Daniel Millisor, Union City, Tenn., and Debra and James Homan, New Bremen; and five grandchildren.
Deceased is a son, Keith Topp.
He was a 1966 graduate of Anna High School. He had been employed at Minster Machine Co. for the past 35 years.
Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Memory Gardens near St. Marys.
The family has asked friends to gather at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen, before 1 p.m. Tuesday to join in a procession to the cemetery.
Brian Wood
Brian Edward Wood, 30, of Spencerville, died Nov. 2, 2001 at his residence. Death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to reports from the Spencerville Police Department.
He was born July 27, 1971, in Athens, Tenn., to Redmond S. and Mildred I. Wood, who survive. On Aug. 14, 1998, he married Kimberly Jo Agler and she survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Megan Herold; a son, Brian Jr.; three brothers and their wives, Redmond and Cindy, Lima, Scott and Billie and Matthew and Stephanie, all of Spencerville; two sisters and their husbands, Dianne and Arnel Marlow, Jacksboro, Tenn., and Jennifer and Steve Schwartz, Lima, and a sister, Cheryl Miller, Chattanooga, Tenn.; the father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Betty Agler, Spencerville; a brother-in-law, Tom Agler, also of Spencerville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was an engineering consultant with D.L. Steiner Inc. and a member of a local rock band. He was a 1989 graduate of Spencerville High School and a 1994 graduate of Ohio Northern University, Ada, with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering as well as a concentration in biomedical sciences and a minor in mathematics. During college he was a member of the engineering fraternity and participated in rugby at the varsity level. He was a member of Hartford Christian Church, Spencerville.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville, the Revs. Daniel Messner and Mary Joyce Wood officiating. Burial will be at Hartford Cemetery.
