Hilda Poeppelman
Hilda J. Poeppelman, 90, formerly of 86 S. Lincoln St., Minster, died at 9:55 a.m. Dec. 28, 2003, at Watauga Medical Center, Boone, N.C.
She was born July 1, 1913, in Fort Loramie, to August and Anna Poeppelman Rethman. On June 10, 1941, she married Wilbert Poeppelman who died March 17, 1986.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia (Edward Jr.) Pekarek, Boone, with whom she resided since December 2001; three sisters-in-law, Marie Rethman, Sidney, Fredonia Rethman, Versailles, and Frances Rethman, Fort Loramie; and three grandchildren.
Six brothers and four sisters are deceased.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Monica Ladies Sodality and the auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1391, all of Minster.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. Louis Schmit officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Calling is 2-6 p.m. Thursday and 9-9:30 a.m. Friday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster.
Gertrude Tesno
Gertrude H. Tesno, 85, Club Island Road, Celina, died at 7:19 p.m. Dec. 28, 2003, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
She was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Dayton, to Albert and Amelia Zimmerman. Her husband, Russell Tesno, died July 14, 1991.
Surviving are a son, James (Ann) of Celina; two daughters, Mary (Frederick) Drakesmith, St. Charles, Mo., and Barbara (Eric) Niederhoffer, St. Louis, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
Deceased are four brothers, Louis, Joseph, Albert and William, and a sister, Margaret Lehman.
She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers Sodality, both of Montezuma.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, the Rev. James Dugal officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater.

Rita Houts
Rita M. Houts, 78, 131 Pershing St., Celina, died at 2:15 a.m. Dec. 26, 2003, at The Gardens at Celina.
She was born June 8, 1925, in St. Marys, to John and Grace Howick Holtman. On June 22, 1946, she married Alfred S. Houts who died June 4, 1987.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald (Betsy) and John (Roxanne), and a daughter, Patricia (Lavern) Balster, all of Celina; a brother, Raymond Holtman, Cleveland; a sister, Blanche Grillot, Celina; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Deceased are three brothers, George, Jerry and Thomas; five sisters, Catherine, Mildred, Lucille, Mary and Gertrude; and a grandchild.
She retired from Mersman Brothers and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Altar-Rosary Society, Loyal Order of Moose, American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, all of Celina.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, the Rev. Thomas Brenberger officiating. Burial will follow at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, Celina.

Richard Stallter
Richard Stallter, 71, of Celina, died at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 24, 2003, at Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born Oct. 5, 1932, in Mendon, to Carl and Helen Margaret Dick Stallter. On June 15, 1952, he married Jacqualin Lou Vorhees who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Reggie E. (Connie) of Clarksville, Ind., and R. Keith (Jennifer) of Alpharetta, Ga.; a daughter, Lou Ann (Todd) Granger, Argyle, Texas; a brother, Robert E. (Connie) of Perrysburg; and eight grandchildren.
He retired in 1991 as a design engineer at Kennedy Manufacturing, Van Wert, after 20 years of service. He also worked at Continental Can Company, Van Wert. A 1950 graduate of Rockford High School, he attended Ohio Northern University and Findlay College. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Celina, and a 32nd Degree Mason.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at W. H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Donald I. Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Herman Hemmelgarn
Herman W. Hemmelgarn, 94, 171 E. Washington St., St. Henry, died at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 24, 2003, at Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater.
He was born Sept. 27, 1909, in St. Henry, to John and Mary Kothman Hemmelgarn. On April 14, 1934, he married Leona Bertke who died Feb. 9, 1988.
Surviving are a son, Harold (Janice) of Centerville; a daughter, Marlene (Ernest) Kremer, New Bremen; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hemmelgarn, New Weston; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A brother, Raymond, is deceased.
He retired from AVCO-New Idea, Coldwater, and was a member of the St. Henry Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Coldwater, and Naim of the North Catholic Widows & Widowers Club.

Betty Rasawehr
Betty E. Rasawehr, 79, formerly of 114 N. Green St., Mendon, died at 1:45 a.m. Dec. 24, 2003, at The Laurels of Shane Hill, Rockford.
She was born Aug. 22, 1924, in Mercer County, to James H. and Lula C. Hines Painter. On Jan. 23, 1940, she married Ernest F. Rasawehr who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Jerry R. (Catherine) of Mendon; two brothers, Fred (Wilma) Painter and Harold Dean Painter, all of Mendon; a sister-in-law, Elma Painter, Celina; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A brother, Paul Painter, is deceased.
She was a homemaker.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at W. H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Mendon, the Rev. Andrew Adkins officiating. Burial will follow at Mendon Cemetery.

Richard Bernard
Mercer County native Richard C. Bernard, 55, 215 W. 94th St., New York, N.Y., died Dec. 18, 2003, at his residence. Death was due to natural causes.
He was born April 2, 1948, in Celina, to Cyril and Alvina Leugers Bernard. They survive in Maria Stein.
Also surviving are two brothers, Tom (Loraine) and Don, both of Maria Stein; and a sister, Ann (Ron) Puthoff, Chickasaw.
He owned Metro-Team in New York City. A 1965 graduate of Brunnerdale Seminary, he received a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Dayton. He also was a writer of philosophy.
Memorial Mass is 10:30 a.m. Jan. 3 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Maria Stein, the Rev. Kenneth Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at a meal at the Knights of St. John Hall, Maria Stein, following graveside rites.

Edna Ebbing
Edna M. Ebbing, 89, of Coldwater, died at 8:16 p.m. Dec. 23, 2003, at Briarwood Manor Nursing Home, Coldwater.
She was born Oct. 1, 1914, in Mercer County, to Michael and Eleanor Westerheide Rosengarten. On May 4, 1940, she married Paul Ebbing who died Oct. 13, 1988.
Surviving are three sons, Gary (Liz) of Lima, Dave (Janis) and Don (Diana), all of Coldwater; a daughter, Jan (Dan) Muhlenkamp, Celina; a brother, Louie (Erma) Rosengarten, Dayton; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Coldwater.

Bruenhilde Hoel
Bruehilde Wissman Hoel, 95, formerly of 626 N. Buckeye St., Celina, died Dec. 23, 2003, at The Laurels of Shane Hill, Rockford.
She was born Dec. 6, 1908, in New Bremen, to Gustave and Ida Waterman Wissman. On June 14, 1938, she married Homer R. Hoel who died in February 1973.
Surviving are a son, David H. of Celina; a brother, Carl (Janet) Wissman, St. Marys; and a granddaughter.
A brother, Harold Wissman, is deceased.
She began teaching in Celina in 1931 and taught first grade for 30 1/2 years. She also worked part time at the Mercer County Public Library for 10 years following retirement. She attended New Bremen Schools and the International Business College, in Fort Wayne, Ind., and later received a bachelor of science degree from Miami University, Oxford.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Celina, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Shakespeare Club, University Women's Club, Ohio Retired Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers of Mercer County. She also was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and a member and past worthy matron of the Celina Order of Eastern Star.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Kathleen Hayes officiating. Burial will be at North Grove Cemetery, Celina.

Carl Kunk
North Star native Carl Edward Kunk, 61, of Lumberton, Texas, died Nov. 24, 2003, at his residence. Death was due to natural causes.
Surviving with his wife, Phyllis, are three sons, Darrell (Kathy) of Silsbee, Texas, Brian (Sally) of Kountze, Texas, and Steve (Kim) of Beaumont, Texas; two daughters, Sandra (Steve) Eckhardt, Taylor, Texas, and Carla (Jerry Wayne) Hall, Kountze; a brother, Ralph of Russia; five sisters, Jill Trafzer, Celina, Mary Kay Fullenkamp, Plant City, Fla., Barb Thobe, Sidney, Rosie George, Sunburst, Mont., and Kathy Heitkamp, Versailles; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Deceased are his parents, Richard and Alvina Kunk, and a brother, Gene.
Funeral Mass was Nov. 29 with burial at R.S. Farmer Cemetery, Silsbee.
Broussard's Mortuary, Kountze, had charge of arrangements.
