Beatrice Miller
Beatrice L. Miller, 85, of Lima, died at 1:25 a.m. Dec. 23, 2003, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.
She was born April 6, 1918, in Jay County, Ind., to Carl and Blanche West Buck.
Surviving are a brother, Carl (Norma) Buck, Celina; three sisters, including her twin Berniece Germann, Iola Schuck and Marjorie Miesse, all of Celina; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Earl R.; a daughter, Betty; three brothers and two sisters.
She had worked in the bindery department at the News-Gazette Printing Co. and was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, both of Lima.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Chiles & Sons-Laman Lewis Chapel, Lima, the Rev. Martha Vogelsang officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Mausoleum, Lima.

Helen Subler
Helen Frances Subler, 80, 461 Bernard Ave., St. Henry, died at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 23, 2003, at a son's home in Delphos.
She was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Coldwater, to Charles and Regina Buehler Broerman. On Nov. 14, 1945, she married Robert Subler who died March 29, 1978.
Surviving are three sons, Gene (Nancy) of Berne, Ind., David (Sue) of Greenville, and Greg (Sherry) of Delphos; three daughters, Barb (Mike) Niekamp, St. Henry, Mary (Dave) Sterling, Delphos, and Joan (Jim) Stover, Piqua; a sister, Alvina Shieltz, Russia; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Gerald; a sister, Julietta Henry; and a grandchild.
She worked at the former Buckeye Apparel Inc., Coldwater, and retired from the Copeland Corporation, Sidney. She was a member of the St. Henry Catholic Church and the St. Henry American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Gold Star Mother who lost a son in the Vietnam War.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Larry Wyen officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Friday and 8:45-9:45 a.m. Saturday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, St. Henry.
Brooks Buel
Brooks Buel, 93, 203 Buckeye St., Rockford, died at 10:10 a.m. Dec. 22, 2003, at Colonial Nursing Center/Assisted Living, Rockford.
He was born June 7, 1910, in Wells County, Ind., to George and Louella Walters Buel. His first wife, the former Louetta Mihm, is deceased. On June 3, 1938, he married Esther Jeanette Rhoades who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Rex (Ann) of Waynesboro, Va.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Donald E.; two brothers, Howard and Charles; two sisters, Mary Beerbower and Irene Cotton; and two grandchildren.
He had worked at Rockford Stone Co. He also worked at Celina Moving and Storage and the Department of Highways, drove bus in the Rockford School District and farmed. He was a member of New Horizons Community Church and a 50-year member of Gideons International.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Robert Loar officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Harry Downam
Harry D. Downam, 55, 312 N. 17th St., Decatur, Ind., died at 10:25 p.m. Dec. 19, 2003, at Adams County Hospital, Decatur.
He was born June 23, 1948, in Marion, Ind., to Paul and Beverly Small Downam. On March 26, 1978, he married Linda Collins who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Billy Joe of Gastonia, N.C.; four daughters, Tammie of Decatur, Crystal Gosnell and Kathern Moore, both of Gastonia, and Elizabeth Queen, Black Mountain, N.C.; four brothers, Larry (Sue) of Celina, Paul Edward of Crossville, Tenn., Jack L. (Connie) of California, and Robert S. of Stillwater, Okla.; a sister, Mari (Jerry) Lewter, Savanna, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
A son, Harry D. Jr., is deceased.
He was retired and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Celina, and the St. Marys American Legion Post.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Cisco Funeral Home, the Rev. Steve Coburn officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Mendon.

Lois Hall
Lois E. Hall, 99, of Celina, died at 8:45 p.m. Dec. 20, 2003, at The Gardens at Celina.
She was born Aug. 27, 1904, in Montezuma, to Owen T. and Elizabeth Buxton Elder. On Aug. 1, 1925, she married Vaughn Hall who is deceased.
Surviving are a son, Owen (Madonna) of Celina; a daughter, Ruthann (Eldon) Eichenauer, Celina; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, Wendell Elder, and a sister, Lucille Bair.
A graduate of Findlay University, she taught in one-room schoolhouses and later was a case worker at the Mercer County Welfare Department before retiring at the age of 75. She was a member of the Neptune Church of God, where she was a Sunday School teacher and a pianist, the Shakespeare Club, the Public Employees Retirement Association, Business & Professional Club and the West Ohio Livestock Exchange.
A coffee open house celebrating her life will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Church of God, Celina.
Memorial services follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church, with Richard Van Horn and Gwyn (Eichenauer) Stetler officiating.

Leila Maury
Leila B. Maury, 95, 610 N. Cherry St., Celina, died at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 21, 2003, at her residence.
She was born May 9, 1908, in Mercer County, to Daniel and Alice Schroyer Menchhofer. On Oct. 3, 1928, she married Lawrence Maury who died in September 1981.
Surviving are a son, John (Pat) of Celina; three daughters, Mary Alice (Clark) Cook, Sidney, Dorothy (Conrad) Brandts, Dahlgren, Va., and Ellen (Ted) Stachler, Celina; a brother, Lowell (Alberta) Menchhofer, Portland, Ind.; a sister, Marcella Yarian, Celina; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Betty Lou, and two brothers, the Rev. Ivan and Irvin Menchhofer.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Celina, where she held numerous offices.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev. Douglas Meyer officiating. Burial will be at North Grove Cemetery.

Leo Schockman
Leo W. Schockman, 84, 303 Harbor Drive, (Northwood) Celina, died at 3 a.m. Dec. 21, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 16, 1919, in Coldwater, to Albert and Christine Huwer Schockman. On May 27, 1946, he married Betty Vian who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Carolyn L. Shaner, St. Henry, Gloria (Michael) Fortman and Joreen Gonzalez, all of Celina, and Janet (Michael) Kittle, Cridersville; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Candace Ann; four brothers, Walter, Carl, Clarence and Louis; and a sister, Pauline Geier.
He formerly owned and operated Wolff Tires in Celina for 28 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Knights of Columbus, all of Celina, and Osgood American Legion Post. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, the Rev. Thomas Brenberger officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Henry Catholic Cemetery.

Emanuel Backey
Former Mendon resident Emanuel Benjamin Backey, 93, of Lima, died at 10:31 a.m. Dec. 20, 2003, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
He was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Hancock County, to Benjamin and Lydia Ziegenfuss Backey. On Oct. 8, 1944, he married Cecile E. Wharton who died April 15, 1999.
A brother, Theodore H., is deceased.
He had been a longtime farmer in the Mendon area and served four years with the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of Lima Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Crates Funeral Home, Arlington, the Rev. Don Byard officiating. Burial will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Hancock County.

Paul Bollenbacher
Paul E. Bollenbacher, 73, 8447 Ohio 49, Celina, died Dec. 20, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 26, 1930, in Mercer County, he was the son of Vernon and Creva Branstetter Bollenbacher. They survive in Geneva, Ind. On May 26, 1951, he married Anna L. Smitley, who died Dec. 20, 2000.
Surviving are two sons, Gene (June) and Roger (Victoria), all of Celina; a daughter, Patty (Don) Thees, Celina; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was a retired farmer in Mercer County and Adams County, Indiana. He attended Jefferson Township School in Adams County and was a member of Calvary Bible Church, Berne, Ind.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva, the Revs. Michael Wenger and Paul Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Kessler Cemetery in Mercer County.

Merle Chrisman
Merle M. Chrisman, 69, 2900 Melody Lane Drive, Celina, died at 6 a.m. today, Dec. 22, 2003, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 6, 1934, in Sandwich, Ill., to Roy and Blanche Atkinson Scoughton. On March 2, 1955, she married Wayne Chrisman who is deceased.
Surviving are a two brothers, Gerald (Rosa) Scoughton, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Richard Scoughton, Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Faye (Gerald) Chrisman, Celina; caretaker and niece, Jackie (Brad) Hughes, Celina; and a brother-in-law, Charles Diem, Grand Marsh.
Deceased are seven brothers and a sister, Viola Diem.
She had worked at Celina Insurance Group. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, both of Celina.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lehman Funeral Home, Celina, with Barbara Armentrout officiating. Burial will follow at North Grove Cemetery.
