THOMAS B. MOYER, age 88, of Piqua, Oh. Died Friday September 10, 2004 at 7:45 A.M. at Upper Valley Medical Center. He was born Nov. 7, 1915 in Dawson, Ohio to the late Perry and Margaret (Chaney) Moyer. He married Martha Stewart on Aug. 21, 1937 in Lockington, Ohio and she survives.
Also surviving is one son, Dan Moyer of Piqua, two daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Thomas Polhamus of Troy, Oh, and Margie and Michael Locker of Indianapolis, Indiana, one sister Edith Bookwalter of Troy, Oh. 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Ted Moyer and two sisters.
Mr. Moyer Graduated from Houston High School in 1933. He worked for Miller Meteor Company in Piqua for 35 years and retired in 1979. He was also a charter member of the Lockington Volunteer Fire Department.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with Rev. Haldon Argabright officiating. Burial will follow at Beechwood cemetery Lockington, Oh. Arrangements are being handled by Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lockington Volunteer Fire Department 10363 Museum Trail Piqua, Ohio 45356.

ARTHUR B. KNOUFF, 81, of Sidney, Oh, died at 6:47 p.m. Friday Sept. 10, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Miami County to the late Lester and Florence (Miller) Knouff. He married Phyllis Mann on July 8, 1976 in Tennessee and she survives.
He is also survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Carolyn Knouff of Piqua; two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Candra Earls of Piqua, Rufus and Velma Pridemore of Ft. Loraime, Oh; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Steven Crawford of Houston, Oh, and Sue and David Schneider of Sidney; two brothers, Charles Knouff of Houston, Oh, and Johnnie Knouff of Celina, Oh; one sister, Frances Durenell of Sidney; 3 grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, 19 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister.
Mr. Knouff was a member of the Family of Grace United Methodist Church in Piqua. He was also a member of DAV of Miami County. Arthur served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked for S & K Products in Coldwater, Oh. for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua. Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua, with Rev. James Wheeler officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilson Hospice Care 915 West Michigan Street Sidney, Ohio 45365.

CHESTER A. SPAIN: age 60, formerly of Piqua, OH; died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at his residence in St. Petersburg, FL.
He was born July 29, 1944, in Piqua to Roma (Jenkins) Kiser of Piqua and the late Chester E. Spain.
In addition to his mother, Chester is also survived by one daughter: Brenda Ward of Kettering; 1 grandson: Jeremy Ward; 4 brothers: Joseph Spain of Sidney, Don Spain of Muncie, IN, Terry Spain of Steilacoom, WA and Raymond Kiser, Jr. of Piqua and 4 sisters: Vivian Burch of Piqua, Judy Hemenway of Vancouver, WA, Beverly Simmons of Piqua and Esther Dyke of New Carlisle. He is also survived by a special friend: Janice Bylsina of St. Petersburg, FL; a good friend: Kenny of St. Petersburg, FL; a cousin: Tom Ryan of Safety Harbor, FL. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive Chester. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. Chester was preceded in death by one brother: Richard Spain and two sisters: Jeane Shaw and Doris Bell.
Mr. Spain attended Piqua City Schools and graduated in Florida in 1963. He was self-employed as a painter and operated Chet’s Painting Service for over 30 years.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday September 17, 2004 at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua with Rev. Thomas Farrier officiating. Calling hours will be from 9:00 –10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

VERONICA L. (FRANCIS) ABBOTT, age 48, of Troy, died Thursday September 16, 2004 at 4:54 P.M. at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy. She was born August 18, 1956 in Piqua, OH.
Veronica is survived by her father and stepmother: Floyd T. and Velma Francis of Piqua; her mother: Betty J. (Clark) Francis of Piqua: 1 son: Daniel “D. J.” Abbott, of Piqua; 2 daughters: Jennifer Abbott and Jessica Jones, both of Piqua; 2 grandchildren: Shawn Wright and Naomi Pieper; 5 sisters: Sharon Francis, of Piqua, Evelyn Smith, of Piqua, Norma Eshman, of Piqua, Susan Crase, of Tipp City and Theresa Bean of Piqua; 3 brothers: Bruce Francis, of Troy, Ron Francis, of Piqua and Ted Francis, of Fletcher.
Veronica attended Piqua City Schools and she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Piqua. She loved being a grandmother!
Funeral services will be Monday September 20, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Grilliott officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua, Ohio. Calling Hours will be Sunday, September 19, 2004 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, with a Prayer Service at 5:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to Miami County Mental Health, 3130 N. Dixie Highway, Troy, OH 45373.

WALTER D. ROSE, Age 85, of Piqua, Ohio, died Saturday Sept 18, 2004 at 10:44 A.M. at Upper Valley Medical Center. Mr. Rose was born Sept. 16, 1919 in Fletcher, Ohio to the late Walter B. and Lucy I. (Gump) Rose.
He married Eileen M. (Inskipt) Rose June 27, 1942 in Piqua, Ohio and she survives.
Also surviving are 3 Daughters & Son-In-Law: Shari & Jim Butts of Sidney, O.; Carol Hunt and Lisa Totten both of Piqua, O.; His Mother-In-Law: Catherine Inskipt of Piqua, Ohio. 13 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Judy K. Gustin, 2 Sisters and 4 Brothers, 1 Grandson and 1 Grandaughter.
Walter graduated from Brown Township High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WORLD WAR II serving in China. He was a member of Piqua Veterans of Foreign War #4874, Piqua American Legion Post #184 and the AmVets. Mr.Rose was a Plumbing contractor and owned and operated Rose Plumbing in Piqua for over 35 years.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday Sept. 21, 2004 at 1 P.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME with Rev.Dr. Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua, Ohio. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 11 A.M.- 1 P.M. at the funeral home.

MARTHA L. (LAHEY) BERNHARDT, age 92, of Piqua, Ohio, died Wednesday September 22, 2004 at 1 P.M.at Piqua Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs.Bernhardt was born June 26, 1912 in Piqua, Ohio to the late John and Isabelle (Holden) Lahey. She married Raymond M. Bernhardt Feb. 22, 1936 in St. Mary Church and he preceded her in death on April 28, 1996.
Surviving are 4 Daughters and Son-In-Laws: Karla and Dr. Henry Berger of Piqua; Rebecca and Charles Lamb and Jane and Mark McDonald both of Dallas, Texas; Beverly Henry of Chicago, Ill. 10 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: 1 Grandson, 5 Sisters and 2 Brothers.
Martha was a 1930 graduate of Piqua Catholic High School. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was a paralegal for over 20 years and was a devoted homemaker.
Funeral services will be held Saturday Sept. 25, 2004 at 11 A.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME with Rev.Fr. Thomas Grilliot officiating. Calling hours will be Saturday from 10 A.M.- 11 A.M. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Piqua Ambulance Fund, American Legion Post #184, 301 W. Water St. Piqua, Ohio 45356.

GLADYS F. “SHINE” ROBINSON, Age 84, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Piqua, died Friday September 24, 2004 at 9:07 P.M. at Lewis Memorial Christian Village, Springfield, Illinois. She was born May 6, 1920 in Kannapolis, N.C. to the late Charles and Annie (Morgan) Shinn. She married Donald L. Robinson in 1948 and he preceded her in death in 1985.
Surviving is 1 Daughter: Donnita Good of Rochester, Ill. And 1 Son and Daughter-In-Law: Kevin & Nancy Robinson of Cambridge, Ohio. 3 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren. 1 Sister: Mrs. Opal Couchot of Piqua, Ohio
Shine was a local hairdresser in Piqua for many years before moving to Springfield, Illinois.
A memorial service will be held Thursday September 30, 2004 at 6 P.M. at the Rochester Christian Church with Rev. David Upchurch officiating. Calling hours in Rochester, Ill. will be Thursday from 4:30 P.M.- 6 P.M. at the church.
There will be a local memorial service Saturday October 9, 2004 at 11 A.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Thomas Grilliot and Rev. Samuel Hoeflich officiating. Calling hours will be Saturday October 9, 2004 from 9:00 A.M.- 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lewis Memorial Christian Village, 3400 West Washington, Springfield, Illinois, 62702.

GEORGE D. SIRCH, age 81, of Piqua, Ohio, died Wednesday September 29, 2004 at 2:50 A.M. at Heartland of Piqua Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 15, 1923 in Piqua, Ohio to the late Harley and Viola (Wion) Sirch.
He married Mary E. Wallace on Dec. 6, 1944 in Tipp City, Ohio and she survives.
Also surviving is 1 Son & Daughter-In-Law: Dennis & Shirley Sirch of Piqua, O. 3 Sisters and Brother-In-Laws: Harriet Swallow and Geneva & William Werst both of Piqua, O.; Jeanette Miller of Troy, O.; 1 Brother and Sister-In-Law: James & Pat Sirch of Troy, O. 1 Grandson: Tony Sirch of Piqua, O.
Mr. Sirch was preceded in death by 2 Brothers: Robert & Harley Sirch, 1 Sister: Judy Sirch.
George served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II. He was employed in production at Armco Quarry for 15 years and retired in 1959.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday October 2, 2004 at 2 P.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Lincoln Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Miami Memorial Park with full military honors by The Veterans Elite Tribute Squad. Calling hours will be Friday 5-8 P.M.at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Miami County P.O. Box 502 Troy, Ohio 45373.

Gerard R. “Jerry” YOUNG, age 73, of Piqua, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at 6:45 a.m. at Piqua Manor Nursing Home. He was born January 11, 1931 in Pittsburg, PA to the late Joseph and Margaret Young. He married Barbara J. (Thomas) Young on October 21, 1965 in Piqua; she survives.
Mr. Young is also survived by one son and daughter-in-law: David O. and Linda Young of Piqua and one daughter: Melissa A. Young of Piqua and six grandchildren: Anthony, Joseph, Michael, Josh and Isebelle Young and Christopher Billet. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Jerry graduated from a private catholic high school in Pittsburg, PA in 1948. He was member of the Piqua American Legion #184 and coached Little League Football in Piqua. He was also a registered official for high school football. He retired from French Oil Mill and Machinery in Piqua in 1993 after 30 years of service. Mr. Young served our country in the U.S. Army as a Radio High Speed Operator during the Korean Conflict.
Memorial Services will be Monday, October 4, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home in Piqua with Rev. Fr. Angelo Caserta officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery with full military honors provided by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad.
Memorial contributions may be made to Piqua Manor Dementia Unit 1840 W. High St. Piqua, Ohio 45356.
