Survivors include a daughter, Rae Ann (Dennis) Ruppert of Wapakoneta; five brothers, Adolph "Doc", Lazaro, Frank and William Vasquez of Delphos and Ramon Vasquez of Fort Wayne; a sister, Lucy Zink of Wapakoneta; three grandsons, Scott (Nikkol) Wickline of Wapakoneta, James Wickline of Delphos and Ryan Wickline of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Drew and Courtney Wickline of Wapakoneta; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, two infants and Mitch, Florence and Ben Vasquez; and a sister, Lola Heysar. Metz was a beautician for Ginny's and Hairy Situations and had been a seamstress at Shenks. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, New Hampshire. She was born Oct. 21, 1933 in Lima, to Donald and Daisy (Cockrell) Hahn. Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Anna (Larry) Kirby of Charlestown, W.Va., and Kathleen Lynn (Neal) Beeler of Hilliard; two brothers, John (Inez) Hyndman of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Donald Hahn of Clyde; two sisters, Esther Hooker and Marilyn "Nancy" (Steve) Horvath of Lima; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Viola Hyndman, Maxine Kaser and Eileen Jarrell. Mrs. Roessler was a secretary at Duff Truck Lines for more than 15 years. On Aug. 3, 1940, he married Ruth Reed, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Phillip R. (Susan) Mohr of Middle Point and Blane A. (Kay) Mohr of Grover Hill; two sisters, Anna Ruth McClure of Grover Hill and Arlene Keith of Scott; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Catherine G. Roth, 83, of Van Wert, died 9:30 a.m. June 25 at Convoy Care Center. She was born Oct. 19, 1918 in Van Wert, to Daniel and Winnie (Snyder) Jerome. On Sept. 26, 1937, she married Lawrence E. Roth, who died Jan. 21, 1983. Survivors include two sons, Larry J. Roth of Van Wert and Jerry L. (Camellia) Roth of Panama City, Fla.; two daughters, Diane (Richard) Perry of Convoy and Cynthia (Fred) McQueen of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Graydon Jerome of Fort Wayne and Dan Jerome of Van Wert; two daughters, Gwendolyn Knodel and Kay (Rex) Rodman of Van Wert; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, a foster brother and a great grandchild. Mrs. Roth was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Evangelical Church, Van Wert, and was active for many years with the Van Wert County Heart Association. She was married to Edward E. May, Robert L. Gilbert and Harley L. Morris, who all preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Donald E. (Maggie) May of Lima and Samuel D. (Kathy) Gilbert; two daughters, Mary Esther of Florida and Leah (Dewey) Shaw of Van Wert; seven stepchildren, Bill, Norma, Lela, Wayne and Jim Gilbert, Bonnie Lou Stout and Rovine Beam; five brothers, Jack Swygart of Monroeville, Ind., Paul Swygart of Maine, Gerald Swygart of New Haven, Ind., Richard Swygart of South Carolina and Lafayette Swygart; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepchild, Judy Gilbert; three brothers and two sisters. On Oct. 11, 1932, he married Neva Sawmiller, who preceded him in death in 1992. Survivors include two sons, Charles (Marilyn) Wilkins of Thurmond, N.C., and Jim (Esther) Wilkins of Fort Myers, Fla.; a daughter, Donna (Ron) Holmes of Beach City; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. On Jan. 30, 1943, he married Nelda Jane Ream, who survives. Survivors also include a son, David Ream Smith of Palm Springs, Calif.; three daughters, Debra Jane (Max) Stover of Elida, Denise Ann (Dave) Shafer of Bluffton and Dena Sue (Steve) Boswell of Clear Springs, Mich.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, James E. Smith. Mr. Smith had been an instrument foreman at Sohio Refinery. He was a member of Southside Christian Church, where he served as deacon. Joe M. Whitacre, 73, of Van Wert, died 11:50 p.m. June 23 at his residence. He was born Sept. 5, 1928, in Lima to Mr. and Mrs. Sylvenus E. Whitacre. On Feb. 28, 1950, he married Wilma L. Rayburn, who survives. Survivors also include a daughter, Lynda (Tim) Purmort of Van Wert; a son, Joe M. Whitacre II of Van Wert; a brother and two sisters; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Mr. Whitacre was a retired tool and die maker. He was a member of the Van Wert American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Private family graveside services will be at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, the Rev. Funeral services for Sr. Mary Hildalin Brown, S.N.D., who died June 22, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at the Notre Dame Provincial Center, Toledo. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. She was born in 1908 in Frank (Bellevue) to Andrew and Anna Brown. In 1930, she began her life as a member of the Toledo Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame. She was a teacher for 57 years and after her retirement, she continued to tutor children at Mary Immaculate School. She served at Immaculate Conception in Bellevue, St. Mary in Sandusky, St. Mary in Leipsic, St. Joseph in Crestline, Sacred Heart in Bethlehem, St. Joseph in Fremont, St. John's in Delphos, St. Aphonsus in Peru, St. Wendelin in Fostoria, St. Augustine in Napoleon, St. Paul in Norwalk and St. James, Sacred Heart, St. Michael, Holy Rosary and Mary Immaculate in Toledo. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. On April 23, 1983, he married Deborah Buchanan, who survives in Elida. Perrine, who died Aug. 17, 1983. Survivors include two daughters, Roxanna L. "Roxie" (Jim) Stinebaugh and Deborah "Debbie" (Ed) Hickman of Wapakoneta; a brother, Lee A. (Cinda) Kinstle of Van Wert; three sisters, Jane (Bill) Hemmer and Carol Bogart of Wapakoneta and Norma "Tuti" (Joe) Lamborne of Melbourne, Fla.; six grandchildren, Tony, Eric and Chad Stinebaugh and Jenny Hickman of Wapakoneta, Jeff (Jennifer) Hickman of Delphos and Tracey (Dan) Hunt of Lima; and four great-grandchildren. Layton C. Bowsher, 78, of rural Spencerville, died 6:30 p.m. June 22 in a farming accident near state route 81 west of Spencerville in Van Wert County. He was born May 16, 1924, in Jennings Township, Van Wert County, to Elza and Mabel (Fissel) Bowsher. On Nov. 5, 1944, he married Ruth E. Bolton, who survives. Survivors also include two sons, Larry W. (Judy) Bowsher of Elgin and Ronald L. (Cindy) Bowsher of Spencerville; a daughter, Doris E. (Ben) Hyde of Kempner, Texas; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Emily Bowsher. Mr. Bowsher was a lifelong farmer for 30 years and owned Layton C. Bowsher Insurance Agency, primarily working with the Grange Insurance Company. He was a member of Hartford Christian Church, Spencerville, where he served in many duties. He was a member of Good Sam Camping Club and served as wagon master of the Roll-In-Sams Camping Club, Chapter 62 of Van Wert. He was a 1943 graduate of Spencerville High School. Survivors include three sons, Tom (Mary Catherine) Siefker of Ottawa, and Daniel (Marilyn) Siefker and James (Esther) Siefker of Kalida; five daughters, Helen Gerding of Ottawa, Eunice (Barney) Pohl of Quincy, Mich., Joan (Larry) Peck and Jane (Earl) Kleman of Kalida, and Marie (Ron) Kuhlman of Ottawa; 59 grandchildren, 118 great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. David Ray officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. He was born Feb. 20, 1925 in Van Wert, to Fern and Marjorie (Cratty) Anderson. On Nov. 12, 1979 he married Patricia A. (McMichael) Anderson, who survives. He was born Nov. 2, 1958, in Dayton, to John C. and Doris (Wolff) Sanders Sr. His mother survives in Mount Vernon, Texas. He is also survived by significant other Barbara Arnold of Van Wert; a brother, John (Lucy) Sanders of Mount Vernon; a sister, Monica (Jim) Sanders of Plattsburgh, Mo.; and a grandmother, Frederica Sanders of Dayton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Fredrick Sanders and a sister, Joan C. Sanders. Mr. Sanders had previously worked as a driller on oil wells in Texas. Rosella S. Laudick
Jan. 14, 1916 - June 19, 2002
Rosella S. Laudick, 86, of Van Wert, died 8:03 a.m. June 19 at her residence. She was born Jan. 14, 1916, in Hessen Cassel, Ind., to Henry and Frances (Fox) Sorg. On Aug. 3, 1946, she married Robert J. Laudick, who died Sept. 21, 1995. Survivors include four sons, Lawrence (Penny) Laudick of Dublin, Thomas (Patricia) Laudick of Columbus, Richard (Susan) Laudick of Galena and Stephen (Debra) Laudick of Van Wert; a daughter, Karen Lou Kennedy of Fort Wayne; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters. On April 1, 1950, Mrs. Laudick and her husband founded Laudick's Jewelry in Van Wert. She had also worked in the Township Trustee Office in Fort Wayne, then at Wolf & Dessauer and finally as a secretary to the vice president of Farnsworth Television and Radio Corp. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert, and was former president of the Altar Rosary Sodality. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, the Rev. Joseph Schmelzer officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Friends may call 2-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, where a rosary service will be at 8 p.m. Preferred memorials are to St. Mary School Foundation Fund and Masses.

Betty M. McCain
Dec. 6, 1920 - June 18, 2002
Betty M. McCain, 81, of Spencerville, died 5:55 a.m. June 18 at St. Rita's Medical Center. She was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Mercer County to Gettys and Opal (Fisher) Goodwin. On April 7, 1944, she married Donald J. McCain, who died Oct. 27, 1982. Survivors include a son, James R. (Cyndi) McCain of Lawrence, Mich.; a grandson, Matthew McCain of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. McCain was a homemaker and had worked at the Lima Tank Depot during World War II. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Spencerville, and its adult Sunday school class, and the Ida Rebekah Lodge 291, of which she was a member since 1945 and was a Past Noble Grand. She was also a member of the Rambling Ohio Winnies travel trailer club and enjoyed square dancing and bowling. She assisted her husband for many years in Boy Scouting and served as a Cub Scout den mother for several years. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville, the Rev. John G. Medaugh officiating. Burial will be in Spencerville Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to Trinity United Methodist Church or Boy Scout Troop 2 of Spencerville.

Florence E. Osborn
June 10, 1911 - June 14, 2002
Florence E. Osborn, 91, of Van Wert, died at 4:45 a.m. June 14 at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert. She was born June 10, 1911, in Van Wert County to Frederick H. and Cora B. (Pollock) Lehman. On Feb. 15, 1949, she married Joseph Dean Osborn, who died Sept. 15, 1997. Survivors include a son, David L. (Marilyn) Osborn of Seabeck, Wash.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Karl F. and Walter F. Lehman; and a sister, Mildred A. Billinger. Mrs. Osborn was a registered nurse in Lima and Van Wert hospitals for more than 40 years until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Van Wert, and served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in the European Theater during World War II. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church, the Rev. James Howell officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery with military services by Van Wert American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to Bethel United Methodist Church.

Ruth D. Goodwin
Ruth D. Goodwin, 85, of Spencerville, died 11:40 a.m. June 17 [2002] at Mount Carmel West Hospital, Columbus. She was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Jennings Township, Van Wert County, to Daniel Franklin and Susan Florence (Purdy) Kennedy. On Nov. 16, 1935, she married D. Willis Goodwin, who died June 3, 1999. Survivors include a son, D. Eugene "Gene" Goodwin of London; a daughter, Darlene S. (Robert) Hayman of Grove City; a sister, Martha K. "Polly" Potter of Stuart, Fla.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Maurice, Walter, Bryce and Bernard Kennedy; and four sisters, Mary Guthrie, Hazel Kraft, Frances Burnett and Mildred Kuhn. Mrs. Goodwin was a homemaker and had worked as a cook in the Spencerville Schools for 12 years in the Jennings Elementary School. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Ida Rebekah Lodge 391, Spencerville, and was former member of Spencerville Grange 2424 and was a 1935 graduate of Spencerville High School. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville, the Rev. John G. Medaugh officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Wright Cemetery near Converse. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to Trinity United Methodist Church, Spencerville.

Leah Ann Doner

Funeral services for Leah Ann Doner, 90, of Van Wert, who died 12:13 a.m. June 15 at Van Wert County Hospital, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Van Wert, the Rev. Dr. Ralph F. Schibler officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. She was born Jan. 31, 1912, in Van Wert County to Charles and Myrtle (Stump) Thatcher. On Dec. 25, 1931, she married George Luther Doner, who died Oct. 18, 1994. Survivors include three sons, James O. (Virginia) Doner, John D. Doner and Jerry L. (Carla) Doner of Van Wert; two daughters, Mary Dietrich of Rockford and Janet (Robert C.) Strobel of Van Wert; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Mae Kwaseigroh and an infant son, Charles L. Doner; a brother, Miles Thatcher; and an infant sister, Mary Louise. Mrs. Doner was a homemaker. Kenneth L. Caudill

Kenneth L. Caudill, 74, of Van Wert, formerly of Spencerville, died the morning of June 16 at his residence. He was born Aug. 19, 1927, in Happy, Ky., to Less and Docia Jean (Adams) Caudill. He was married to Mary Lou Huff, who died April 2, 1988. On Nov. 15, 1991, he married Gladys L. Allen Black, who survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Nancy L. (Tom) Bush of Stacy, Minn., Cathy L. (Doug) Haskell of Bedford, Tenn., and Tammy J. (Tony) Bramner of Circleville; a son, Jimmy A. (Kathy) Caudill of Hendersonville, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Jo Profitt of Franklin and Martha Ann Caudill of Big Stone Gap, Va.; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Kimble Caudill. Mr. Caudill retired from the cutter grind department of Ford Motor Co., Lima Engine Plant, after 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772, Spencerville, where he served as commander in 1981-82. He was also a member of American Legion Post 191, Spencerville. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville. Burial will be in Spencerville Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Spencerville VFW and American Legion posts. Crystal V. Dearwester

Graveside services for Crystal Velma "Bubby" Dearwester, 89, of Lima, who died 1:45 p.m. June 13 at her residence, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, the Rev. Ellis "Hap" Itson officiating. She was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Allen County to Lewis and Clara (Ellsworth) Dearwester. Survivors include nieces and nephews, including Richard (Patricia) Lytle and Daniel R. Lytle of Lima and Frances Jean (Edward) Kochen of Lima. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis, Edward and Charles Dearwester; and two sisters, Frances Lytle and an infant. Ms. Dearwester had worked at Allied Display and Fultz Lumber Company. She was a member of the former Morris Chapel Methodist Church, Delphos, and was an avid Ohio State fan. There is no visitation. Preferred memorials are to St. Rita's Hospice.

Rita L. McBee
Memorial services for Rita L. McBee, 81, of Avon Park, Fla., who died June 13 [2002], were held Saturday at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home, Sebring, Fla. The body will be cremated and the remains buried in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. She was married to Lawrence L. McBee, who survives in Avon Park. Other survivors include a son, Lawrence (Patricia) McBee of Richardson, Texas; three daughters, Patricia (Brad Sheeks) McBee of Philadelphia, Teri (Paul) Wiechart of Defiance and Pegi (Bubba) Gaudet of New Orleans; a sister, Ruth Tipodi of Norwalk, Conn.; a brother, Louis Lauricella of Avon Park; and four grandchildren. Mrs. McBee was a registered nurse. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. She was a member of Union Congregational Church, Avon Park, and was volunteer at Florida Hospital Heartland and active with Habitat for Humanity.
