On Jan. 31, 1990, he married Delores "Pete" Redmon, who survives in Van Wet. Other survivors include two daughters, Janice Emans of Lakewood, Calif., and Shreena Fornear of Clifton, Colo.; a son, Robert Coate of Celina; a brother, Edwin (Ana) Emans of Frankfurt, Ind.; two sisters, Wanda (Donald) Steele of Rotanda, West, Fla., and Janet McHugh of Van Wert; special friend Raquel (Brad) Schaadt; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Emans retired from Tri Pallet Company in Morgan Hill, Calif. He was a member of Trinity Friends Church and Gideons International and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. Donald Gene Shulaw, 48, of Lima, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home, Spencerville. He was born Feb. 23, 1955, in Lima, to I. Donald and Gloria Jean (Miller) Shulaw, who survive in Lima. Survivors also include a sister, Nancy Ann Shulaw of Lima. Mr. Shulaw worked as a leadman at Nickel's Bakery for 30 years. He was a member of Classic Automobile Club, Ford Thunderbird Club, the National Rifle Association, Emmett Kelly Collector Society and the Hummel Association. He enjoyed bowling, swimming and golfing. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, the Rev. Howard Allison officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Alice M. Mayer, 81, of Delphos, died at 8 a.m. Sunday at her residence. She was born Dec. 5, 1921 in Delphos, to Clarence and Edna (Feaster) Mox. On May 3, 1947, she married Norman E. Mayer, who died Dec. 21, 2002. Survivors include a son, David (Linda) Mayer of Elida; a daughter, Katherine (Steve) Brekhus of Florida; two sisters, Helen Gorman and Norma Koenig; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Mox. Mrs. Mayer worked for Graham Trailers. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, the Good Hope Church Group and OSU Alumni Association. Bruce Gaylord Dickerson, 55, of Lima, died at 7:19 a.m. Friday at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born May 13, 1947, in Evanston, Ill., to Wilmer E. and Isabel (Zimmerman) Dickerson. On July 13, 1969, he married Susan Lovell, who survives in Lima. Other survivors include a son, Bruce (Christy) Dickerson II, of Cincinnati; a daughter, Dixie (James) Finch of Evergreen, Colo.; two sisters, Judi Barkett of Greenbrier, Tenn., and Carol Maddock of Tucson; and a mother-in-law, Frances Lovell, of Cridersville. Mr. Dickerson was president and CEO of Randall Bearings Inc. He was a member of Shawnee Country Club, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Elks Lodge 54 and Shawnee United Methodist Church. Connie S. Gehres, 62, of Convoy, died at 11:25 a.m. Saturday at her residence. She was born March 9, 1941 in Van Wert County, to Carl and Lois (Brown) Fegley, who survive in Convoy. On Nov. 4, 1961, she married Emmett E. Gehres, who survives in Convoy. Survivors also include a son, Clint (Tamela) Gehres of Dayton; a daughter, Patti (Steve) Cramer of Convoy; a brother, Roger (Carolyn) Fegley of Convoy; and three grandchildren. Mrs. Gehres was owner of Connie's Beauty Shop, Convoy, for 33 years. She was a member of Convoy United Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women and the choir. Ruby Lee Roberts, 90, of Van Wert, died at 2:20 a.m. Saturday at Van Wert Manor Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Medina County, Texas, to Henry Ebb and Willie Lee (Busch) Holt. On March 7, 1945, she married Roger Mack Roberts, who died Dec. 31, 1989. Survivors include two sons, Roger Mack (Deborah) Roberts Jr., of Bandera, Texas, and William (Patricia) Farrer of Spokane, Wash.; four daughters, Ruby Lois (Bob) Bretz of Longview, Texas, Anita (James) Menck and Sarah Virginia (Malcolm) Reus of San Antonio, Texas, and Francis (Pat) Foust of Van Wert; a brother, Carl Holt of San Antonio; 27 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charlie Farrer; and three grandchildren. Mrs. Roberts worked in an aircraft engine plant during World War II. Frank Baker, 86, of Lima, died at 6:50 p.m. Friday at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home, Lima. He was born Nov. 2, 1916 in Buckland, to J.T. and Lulu (Foltz) Baker. In May 1952, he married Emma Schwartz, who died Nov. 24, 2001. Survivors include a daughter, Marlene (Richard) Ditore of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren, Michael John Ditore of Eagle River, Ark., who is deployed to South Korea, and Lisa Ditore of Rohnert Park, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Cotner; and a brother-in-law, Roger Cotner. Mr. Baker worked at BP Chemicals for 25 years as a chemical operator. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Elida, and the BP 25th Century Club. He was in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, where he received a bronze star for maintaining communications during the invasion of Palermo. He was an avid golfer, bowler and outdoorsman. Robert L. Doyle, 78, of Elida, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born March 14, 1925 in Deshler, to Elmer J. and Louise (Kaiser) Doyle. On May 19, 1944, he married Leah Bowman, who survives in Elida. Other survivors include four sons, William H. (Karen) Doyle of Minneapolis, Michael A. (Linda) Doyle of Holland, Steven W. (Janet M.) Doyle of Elida and James R. (Sue Ellen) Doyle of Strongsville; a brother, William C. (Alvina) Doyle of Tucson; a sister, Evelyn Kepling of Albuquerque, N.M.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold E. Doyle; and two sisters, Patricia Snyder and June Shaffer. Mr. Doyle retired from Delpha Chevrolet Buick in Delphos after 40 years in sales and as a service manager. He was a member of First Christian Union Church, Delphos, and was a former member of the Delphos Eagles Band. He served in the Army Air Corps and was an avid gardener and master woodworker. James "Jim" David Porter, 68, of Lima, died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday at his residence. He was born Sept. 13, 1934 in Alger, to Delcy C. and Beatrice M. (Mulholland) Porter. On June 13, 1953, he married Shirley J. Cisco, who survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Diana L. (Joseph) Becker of Delphos, Teresa K. Savage of Lima and Shelly J. (Kevin) Green of Cridersville; a sister, Roberta Kiracofe of Lima; six grandchildren, Stacey (Matt) Goecke, Aaron Becker, Joshua (Melissa) Savage, Jeremy Savage, Chad Green and Tiffany Green; and four great-grandchildren, Fantajah, Eli and Dalan Savage and Keegan Goecke. Porter worked at the Army Tank Plant, retired as assistant fire chief of Lima Fire Department in 1990 after 30 years with the department, and had worked at Klay Supply. He was a member of West Side United Methodist Church, past master of the Fort Amanda Lodge 706 Free and Accepted Masons, member of Lima Chapter 49 Royal Arch Masons, Lima Council 20 Royal and Selected Masons, Shawnee Commandary 14, past patron of Trinity Chapter 16, Order of Eastern Star, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite of Dayton, Eagles Aerie 370 and past president of the Retired Police and Firefighters Association. Velma M. Brewer, 84, of Van Wert, died at 10 p.m. Saturday at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born Sept. 8, 1918, in Van Wert, to William O. and Ethel (Gotts) Pontius. On Aug. 30, 1939, she married Ronald G. Brewer, who died April 16, 1994. Survivors include a stepson, Ronald J. (Virginia) Brewer of Celina; a brother, Don (Donna) Pontius of Van Wert; four nephews and one niece; three step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bert and Burdette Pontius. Mrs. Brewer was a bookkeeper at Montgomery Ward, Van Wert, for 12 years and Brookside Dairy, Van Wert, for 25 years. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Van Wert, and its Women's Society, a 50-year member of the Van Wert Eastern Star and served on the board at the YWCA. On May 2, 1953, he married Lois Branch, who survives in Delphos. Other survivors include a son, Mark (Judy) Gedeon of Delphos; two daughters, Debra (Ed) Steinberger of Waynesfield and Luann (Vince) Woods of Cincinnati; two sisters, LaVerne Sepich of Parma and Rosemary (Patrick) Corrigan of Cleveland; two brothers, Ray (Ann) Gedeon of Parma and Walter (Ann) Gedeon of Toledo; and four grandchildren. Mr. Gedeon retired from State Chemical in 1992. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight and District Deputy, Fourth Degree; was a life member of the American Legion; past member of the Lions Club and Kiwanis; started and served as president of Shepherds of Christ Prayer Group; was an avid bowler, who was instrumental in starting the Junior Bowling League, and a member of the bowling hall of fame. He was a paratrooper serving in the 101th Airborne Division during the Korean War. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. John P. Gengler, 63, of Delphos, died at 5:08 a.m. Sunday at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born April 20, 1939, in Lima, to Francis J. and Agnes M. (Goedde) Gengler. On Dec. 2, 1961, he married Sharon Lee Rekart, who survives in Delphos. Other survivors include a son, John R. Gengler of Delphos; two daughters, Sandy Etgen of Delphos and Beth A. Gengler of Toledo; a sister, Sue (Charles) Koser of Syracuse, Ind.; and two grandchildren, Katie and Andrew Etgen. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert A. Gengler. Mr. Gengler retired as furnace supervisor from Chrysler Corp. He had also worked at ICM/Krebsoge and GKNSinter Metals in Van Wert. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1362, Delphos, a 50-plus-year member of the Catholic Knights of Ohio, Landeck Council, and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471. He was a 1958 St. John's High School graduate. He was a U.S. Army veteran and enjoyed working with stained glass and keeping in touch with friends. Pfc. Christian D. Gurtner, 19, of Ohio City, died April 2 in Iraq. He was born June 23, 1983, in Dallas, Texas. His parents, Eldonna and Gary Wagonrod, survive in Ohio City. Other survivors include an infant daughter; his friend Alicia Sterling; three sisters, Tammy (Patrick) Williamson of Lyons, Mich., Angie (Rob) Curtis of Belle Center and Amy (Tom) Limbean of Riverton, Utah; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Wagonrod of Van Wert; maternal grandmother Sally Gurtner of Fremont, Ind.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was married to William J. Emick, who died Jan. 26, 1986. Survivors include two daughters, Josephine (Willis) Tudor of Vaughnsville and Suzonne Morse of Columbus Grove; a son, William I. (Enid) Emick of Hamilton, Ind.; seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Miller; and an infant brother and sister. Mrs. Emick retired in 1975 as a bookkeeper and secretary at Gasdorf Tool and Machine Co., and was a past clerk on the Cairo School Board. She was a member of Rockport United Methodist Church, Senior Citizens Services of Lima, Widows Support Group, Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a past 4-H adviser. Mary Jane Ellis, 85, of Delphos, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Rita's Medical Center. She was born Dec. 3, 1917, in Lima, to Edward Lee and Millie (Schinder) Warren. On Jan. 25, 1947, she married Lucien W. Ellis, who survives in Spencerville. Other survivors include three sons, Donald (Betty) Pierce of South Park, Ga., David Pierce of Frankford, Ky., and Terry (Sue Ellen) Pierce of Spencerville; six daughters, Pat (Bob) Poling and Nona (Frank) Lumpkins of Delphos, Lynn (Joe) Wilson of Mount Stearling, Ky., Rose Marie Cooper of Russels Point, Becky Stubbs of Harrod and Ola (Patrick) Rohrburg of Las Vegas; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Pierce; a brother, John E. Warren; and a sister, Maxine Bloom. Mrs. Ellis was a practical nurse. Kathryn E. Shook, 87, of Van Wert, died at 12:37 p.m. Monday at her daughter's residence in Van Wert. She was born March 19, 1916 in Van Wert County, to Virgil and Gladys (Murphy) Johnson. On Jan. 28, 1939, she married Loyal W. Shook, who died July 11, 1995. Survivors include a daughter, Joan (Dwight) Gardner of Van Wert; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four step-great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and four step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Byron Johnson. Shook worked at Wilkinson Printing in Van Wert for several years and worked at Van Wert Manufacturing for 30 years. Kenneth L. Sadler, 69, of Delphos, died at 11 a.m. Sunday at his residence. He was born Feb. 9, 1934 in Fort Jennings, to Arthur Eugene and Ida M. (Fischbach) Sadler. Survivors include a sister, Ida Jean Caron of Coco Beach, Fla.; a brother, James R. Sadler of Delphos; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Donald, Wilber and Richard Sadler; and three sisters, Rosemary Duncan, Lucille Liccata and Mildred Warniment. Mr. Sadler retired as owner of Sadler Trucking in Fort Jennings. He was also a truck driver. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035, American Legion Post and Eagles Lodge 471, Delphos, and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Jennings. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He enjoyed playing cards. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Rev. John Malone Isabrandt, 66, of Kalida, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday at his residence. He was born Sept. 30, 1936, in Coal Grove, to Harry and Alma (Malone) Isabrandt. On Feb. 9, 1959, he married Jane (Ogle) Travis, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Gregory (Nikki Boyd) Travis of Kalida and John (Christina) Isabrandt of Cloverdale; a daughter-in-law, Kim Travis of Ottawa; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers. Mr. Isabrandt retired from Ford Motor Company and had worked at Clark Equipment and Textron in Lima and in the Dayton area. He was a member of the Ottawa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the Kalida Fish and Game Club and the Grand Rapids Sportsmen Club. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. On Aug. 26, 1936, she married William F. Brickner, who died Dec. 8, 1955. Survivors include a son, David W. (Patricia) Brickner of Morganton, N.C.; three daughters, Ruth A. (Thomas) Eilerman and Carol S. Graham of Delphos and Diana M. (Norval) Labadie of Crossepointe, Mich.; three sisters, Evelyn (LaVerne) Looser of Ottoville, Jeanette (Bob) Whitaker of Delphos and Arlene Beining of Findlay; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Marilyn, Carolyn and Marie Brickner; five brothers, Harold, Virgil, Donald, Hubert, and Richard Nartker; and three sisters, Thelma Snyder, Ruth Nartker and Julie Paulks. James R. Eitniear, 70, of Defiance, died at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday in Defiance. He was born March 24, 1933 in Defiance, to Forest R. and Eva A. (Harmon) Eitniear. On Nov. 20, 1953, he married Nancy A. Brewer, who survives in Defiance. Dr. Clayton Wolfe
Dr. Clayton Wolfe, of Alliance, formerly of Delphos, died Monday morning at his residence. He was born in 1905, near Delphos, to Dr. John and Mary Jane (Clark) Wolfe. He married Edna Keefer, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Larry Wolfe of Cleveland and Jackson Wolfe of Boulder, Colo.; two grandsons, Damian Wolfe and Joda Wolfe of San Diego; and a nephew and niece, Dr. and Mrs. David Davies of Seven Lakes, N.C. Dr. Wolfe received his doctorate degree in dental surgery from Case Western University in 1930. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, the Masonic Order, Rotary Club and the hospital board in Alliance. He was past president of the Stark County Dental Society and a life member of the Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity. He enjoyed reading and fishing. On Nov. 18, 1998, she married Edwin Oberlitner, who survives in Van Wert. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Donald Oberlitner. Mrs. Oberlitner was a homemaker and worked at Aeroquip Corp. in Van Wert for 10 years. She was a member of Trinity Friends Church, Van Wert, where she taught Sunday school for many years and led the church choir for 17 years. She sang Gospel music in the Van Wert area for many years with the Zionaires and the Gospelaires. She was also a member of the Hoaglin-Jackson Sunrise Club. George J. Brandehoff, 73, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Delphos, died at 3:05 a.m. Friday at La Canada Care Center in Tucson. He was born in Delphos to Frank B. and Dorthy (Stegeman) Brandehoff. Survivors include two sons, Steven (Mary Ann) Brandehoff of Phoenix and Gregory (Joan) Brandehoff of Saugus, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Erica (Jeremy) McGuire, Stefanie Brandehoff and Jason Brandehoff. Brandehoff worked at the Delphos Bending Company until 1969 when he moved his family to Arizona for his health. He retired from the Tucson Airport Authority as a ground maintenance worker. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts in Tucson. Private family services will be held at the National Veterans Cemetery in Carefree, Ariz.

Sylvia Grouver

Sylvia Grouver, 91, of Elida, died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday at St. Rita's Medical Center. She was born July 16, 1911 in Farmcenter, to Forest Franklin and Florence May (Stone) Bodiker. On Oct. 23, 1947, she married John Owen Grouver, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1975. Survivors include three daughters, Sylvia (Paul) Schulz of Elida, Barbara Morris of Lima and Shirley Breda; a son, Larry (Shirley) Copeland; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Bosserman; a brother, Charles Bodiker; and two sisters, Fannie Cook and Carolyn Laman. Grouver worked at Sills Shoe Store in downtown Lima and was a typist for Longmeier Printing in Lima. She was a member of the Lima Community Church of the Nazarene and served on the Gardendale Church of God Executive Board, Missionary Board, Benevolence Committee, the Pastoral Committee and was a Sunday school teacher. She was a former PTA president at Emerson Elementary and was a member of the Westgate Neighborhood Association. In 1955, she was the first woman in Lima to serve as a midget league baseball coach, was the only woman manager of the Lima Boys Baseball League and coached the Cougars in the Jaycee Division. She enjoyed traveling, was an avid Ohio State Buckeye, Cleveland Indians and Atlantic Braves fan, enjoyed playing cards and Yahtzee and wrote inspirational poetry. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lima Community Church of the Nazarene, the Rev. Dr. David Sharpes officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
