Survivors include two daughters, Jill Smith and Jodi Mickelson of Bloomington, Ind.; a sister, Rita Specker of Greenwood, Ind.; two brothers, Larry (JoAn) Smith of Spencerville and John Smith of New Jersey; and three grandchildren. Mr. Smith had been an ironworker at Iron Works of Dayton. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Harter and Son Memorial Chapel, the Rev. David Howell officiating. Arthur F. Haehn Sr.

Arthur F. Haehn Sr., 78, of Delphos, died 10 a.m. Saturday at his residence. He was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Delphos to Edward and Mathilda (VonLemden) Haehn. On Nov. 27, 1947, he married Fae McIntosh, who survives in Delphos. Survivors also include two sons, Aurthur (Sue) Haehn Jr. of Delphos and Robert Haehn of Greenwood S.C.; four daughters, Susan (Joe) Jackson of Delphos, Mary (Chris) Martin of Spencerville, Dorothy (Art) Rico of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Yvonne (James) Wenzlick of Ottoville; two sisters, Martha Welch and Margaret Todd of Columbus; two brothers, John Haehn of Wapakoneta and Ralph Haehn of Mentor; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis and James Haehn. Mr. Haehn had been a machine repairman at Fruehauf, retiring after 34 years. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035 a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Delphos Coon and Sportsman’s Club. He was a member of the 40th Calvary Reconnaissance, serving in the Army in World War II as a staff Sergeant. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed traveling and camping. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by the Delphos Veterans Council. Charles Edward Guenin, 87, of Lima, died 12:35 p.m. Saturday at Outlook Pointe Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Jackson Center to Adam C. and Dora I. (Funk) Guenin. Survivors include a stepson, Albert (Dana) Moore of Lima; a brother, Cory L. Guenin of Sandusky; caregivers Derald and Dorothy Clapper; a nephew and niece, Ronald Maloon and Martha Thompson of Jackson Center; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Maloon. Mr. Guenin had been a laborer at Ford Motor Company, Lima Plant. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, American Legion Post 96 and Disabled Veterans. After finishing high school at Jackson Center High, he went to California with the Civil Council Course. In 1940, he volunteered for the Army 37th Division. He was sent to the South Pacific, New Zealand, Fiji, Guadal Canal and Borganville. He was wounded in the Philippines and sent home June 1945. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze, Star and Silver Star. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, the Rev. Ellis Itson officiating. Buddy Earl Rice, 72, of Lima, died 1:45 p.m. Friday at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born May 2, 1930, in Lima to Charles and Ruth (Schidibesh) Rice. He married Dorothy Marie Shope, who survives in Lima. Other survivors include three sons, the Rev. Charles (Penney) Rice of Ashland, Ky., Timothy Rice of San Francisco and Dr. Sam (Beth) Rice of Mendotta Heights, Minn.; two daughters, Karen (John) Howells of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Alice (Roger) Towner of Elwood, Ind.; a brother, Henry (Jill) Rice of Lima; a sister, Ruby (Glenn) Allemeier of Delphos; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren. Mr. Rice had worked in maintenance at Ford Motor Company. He attended Bible Missionary Church, Lima, and was a member of UAW Local 1219. Viola M. Balliet, 66, of Ohio City, died 10:30 p.m. Thursday at Putnam Acres Nursing Home, Ottawa. She was born May 14, 1936 in Celina to Phillip A. and Josephine (Burch) Ramsey. On Dec. 22, 1956 she married Gerald C. Balliet Sr., who died March 19, 2001. Survivors include two sons, Gerald C. (Christina) Balliet Jr. of Convoy; Donald E. (Sue Boroff) Balliet of Ohio City; two daughters, Mary Jane (Wayne) Parker of Gilboa and Pam (Clay) Strawser of Scott; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John A, Russell L., and Robert F. Ramsey; and two sisters, Laura Smelser and Anna M. Dunno Walker. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Van Wert. She was a member of Van Wert Women of Moose #6, and a classmate of the 1956 Celina High School. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, the Rev. Jerry Flueckiger officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ohio City. Gene Best, 69, of Delphos, died 5:30 p.m. Monday at his residence. He was born Dec. 1, 1932 in Delphos, to Frank and Vera (Holde) Best. On April 4, 1955, he married Kay MacWhinney, who survives in Delphos. Other survivors include a son, Eric Best of Columbus; two daughters, Melinda Best of Seattle, Wash., and Joanne (Jeffrey) Harris of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Vanetta Teman of Fort Jennings; and two grandchildren, Justin and Jayden Harris of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Best; and three sisters, Evelyn Jones, Helen Bible and Phyllis Kettler. Mr. Best had been general foreman at Fruehauf and in more recent years had sold AFLAC Insurance. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a graduate of Jefferson High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was also nearing his 17th anniversary of a heart transplant from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and golfing. William E. Casey, 76, of Lima, died 11:45 p.m. Saturday at his daughter’s residence. He was born July 20, 1926, in Lima to Michael L. and Catherine (Sullivan) Casey. Survivors include four daughters, Terry (Eugene) Lamb, Becky (Steve) Garrett, Colleen Miller and Corinne (Billy) Garland of Lima; two sons, George (Pam) Casey and Sean (Shawn) Casey of Lima; four brothers, Tim and Mike Casey of Lima, Frank Casey of Wapakoneta and Tom Casey of Toledo; a sister, Catherine “Caddy” Casey of Lima; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, John Michael, Roger David and Richard Eugene Casey; four sisters, Mary, Rose, Noreen and Geraldine; and four brothers, Bob, Dan, Gene and Dick Casey. Mr. Casey retired as a brakeman with Norfolk & Southern Railroad. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, American Legion Post 96, AMVETS, Lima 1, the Railroad Retirement Club and was lead singer in Casey’s Backporch Band. Lenore A. Kennedy, 93, of Van Wert, died 4 p.m. Sunday at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert. She was born Oct. 23, 1908, in Van Wert County to William T. and Sylvia (Terry) Hoeken. In November 1929, she married Merl L. “Tim” Kennedy, who died Aug. 14, 1984. Survivors include a son, Michael L. (Madeline) Kennedy of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a brother, William L. Hoeken of Van Wert; one grandchild, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Kennedy, who died in infancy. Kennedy taught junior high school in Van Wert for almost 30 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Van Wert, for more than 80 years. She was active in the Van Wert County Historical Society, a member of the Van Wert Women’s Club, had taught knitting to 4-H for many years, was a member of the Van Wert Chapter of D.A.R. and had also been active in various community organizations over the years. Tim Surface, 38, of Lima, died 8:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born April 11, 1964 to Ed and Erma Surface, who survive in Wilmington. Other survivors include a daughter, Shannon Surface of New Berlin, Pa.; a son, Isaac Surface of Lima; two brothers, Scott Surface of Wilmington and Todd Surface of Xenia; a sister, Sandy (David) Pratt of Wilmington; and companion Vicki Vaden of Lima. Mr. Surface owned and operated ABC Plumbing Company. He was an avid motorcyclist. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, the Rev. Frank A. Kill, 64, of rural Spencerville, died 5:01 a.m. Sunday at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born Nov. 18, 1937, in Washington Township, Van Wert County, to Sylvester “Syl” and Inez (Louth) Kill. On April 29, 1967, he married Helen P. Gaskill, who survives. Survivors also include a daughter, Tammy Renee Crider of Spencerville; a son, Terry J. Kill of Bluffton; four sisters, Dolores (Robert) Schetter of St. Marys, Lois (Daniel) Dietz and Evelyn (Marvin) Kohler of Wapakoneta and Velma Hoersten of Delphos; three brothers, Fred (Hazel) Kill of Lima, Charlie (Bonnie) Kill of Spencerville and Howard (Irma) Kill of Delphos; and two grandchildren. Mr. Kill retired Jan. 1, 1997, from Ford Motor Company, Lima Engine Plant where he worked for 38 years as an inspector. He served in the U.S. Army for four years in the early 1960s and was a member of Bowersock Bros. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772, the Harry J. Reynolds American Legion Post 191 of Spencerville and United Auto Workers Local 1219 in Lima. He was also a member of Hartford Christian Church, Spencerville, and a 1955 graduate of Spencerville High School. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Thomas E. On June 1, 1973, she married Robert W. Dunlap, who preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Michael W. (Paula) Martz of Wolcottville, Ind., and Kevin M. (Tanya) Martz of Greensburg, Ky.; a daughter, Donella L. Cornelius of Van Wert; a niece, Leanna Bell; a nephew, David Agler; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Agler and Lynn Soul; and a grandchild. Mrs. Dunlap was a homemaker and member of the Salvation Army in Van Wert. Merlin J. Good, 91, 0f Middlebury, Ind., formerly of Elida, died 10:10 p.m. Thursday at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born Aug. 6, 1911, in Elida to Christ and Emma (Hearwole) Good. On Nov. 17, 1934, he married Esther L. Brunk, who died Sept. 6, 2001. Survivors include four daughters, Ruby (Paul) Reed of Manchester, Ky., Twila (Atloe) Miller of Harville, Evelyn (Ira) Kurtz of Lancaster, Penn., and Elnora (Orvin) Yoder of Middlebury; a son, Edwin Good of Columbia; and 36 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters and two grandchildren, Darrel Good and Elizabeth Ann Kurtz. Mr. Good was a minister for over 50 years pastoring and doing church planting in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. He was a member of Pike Mennonite Church, Elida. On Jan. 17, 1928, she married Melvin A. Parsons Sr., who preceded her in death. Survivors include five sons, Milton (Shirley) Parson, Robert (Pattie) Parsons and Michael (Judy) Parsons of Delphos, Melvin (Loretta) Parsons Jr. of Spencerville and Cletus “Bill” (Cathy) Parsons of St. Stephens, S.C.; two daughters, Mary (William) Downey of Lakeview and Janet (Richard) Fiedler of Delphos; 25 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Herbert Parsons; two daughters, Beatrice and Pattie Parsons; three sisters, Loris Parsons, Opal May and Crystle Robison; four brothers, Bill, Emory, John and Nathaniel Lucas; three grandchildren, David Slaughter, Mark Parsons and Barb Kent; and a great-granddaughter, Kimberly Parsons. Robert W. Compton, 63, of Columbus, formerly of Delphos, died Wednesday at Grant Medical Center. He was born May 5, 1939, in Delphos, to Jesse Rex and Edna (Williams) Compton. He married Joan Wagner, who survives. Other survivors include three sisters, Helen (Gary) Strayer of Elida and Pat (Bob) Osburn and Robin (David) Wallenhaupt of Delphos. Mr. Compton retired as a longtime employee of DSAC. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and past master of the Reynoldsburg Lodge 340 Free and Accepted Masons. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Saturday at Schoedinger East Chapel, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus, the Rev. Darrel Larsen officiating. Howard L. Bevington, 70, of Ohio City, died 8 p.m. Monday at Vancrest Health Care Center, Van Wert. He was born March 23, 1932, in Venedocia to Carl “Pat” and Marian E. (Tester) Bevington. On July 25, 1986, he married Nancy Wendel, who survives in Ohio City. Other survivors include three daughters, Lynn (Rex) Davis of Middle Point, Lee (Larry) Schumm of Van Wert and Laura (Sam) Brewster of Lansing, Mich.; two sons, Randy (Judy) Bevington of Nipomo, Calif., and Todd (Ellen) Bevington of Wabash; three stepdaughters, Andrea (Paul) McHenry of Orlando, Fla., Judie Cochiols of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jenifer (Brooks) Call of Rockford; a stepson, Walter Simon of Rockford; a brother, Rodney (Kay) Bevington of Van Wert; a sister, Joan Boley of St. Marys; 13 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Colleen Bevington. Mr. Bevington retired from Mercer Landmark in 1987 as manager. He was a member and past commander of the Harvey Lewis Post of the American Legion in Ohio City, had served as fire chief of the Ohio City Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, had been involved in youth activities in Ohio City for many years, was a member of the Rockford Eagles Lodge and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Larry E. Keeling Sr., 60, of Delphos, died 1 a.m. Tuesday in Gatlinburg, Tenn. He was born Aug. 13, 1942 in Delphos, to Vernon and Mary Jane Keeling. Survivors include his fiancé, Geri Burgei; a daughter, Marilee Keeling of Delphos; a stepdaughter, Cherie (Jeff) Luersman of Fort Jennings; a son, Larry (Mary) Keeling Jr. of Fort Wayne; a stepson, Jason Burgei at home; a sister, Judy “Susie” Hines of Van Wert; and seven grandchildren, Derrick and Damon Coil, Randy, Toby and Katie Keeling, Rachael Luersman and Easton Brinkman. Mr. Keeling was a machinist at Krendl Insulation Co., and had formerly worked at Fruehauf for 25 years and AGCO. He was a member of the Delphos Eagles Lodge 471, Marathon Electric Golf League, Thursday National Bowling League and was an avid golfer and Ohio State fan. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed in Cherry Point, N.C. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Harter and Son Memorial Chapel, the Rev. William Schultz officiating. Danny Lynn Harpster, 56, of Wapakoneta, died 3:26 a.m. Sept. 2 at his residence. He was born Sept. 9, 1945, in Lima to Harold A. and Lucille D. (Kraft) Harpster. His parents survive in Delphos. On May 12, 1973, he married Pamela Sue Krugh, who survives in Wapakoneta. Other survivors include four sons, Scott David (Tina) Harpster, Robb Daniel Harpster and Nickolaus Lee Harpster of Columbus and Randy D. Harpster of Cleveland; four daughters, Tamie M. (Tim) Reindel of Delphos, Julie Marie (Rory) Molina of Columbus, Lori (Todd) Vandenbusche of Springboro and Heidi Marie Harpster of Wapakoneta; a sister, B. Diane (Joe) Harpster Martz of Delphos; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Harpster. Mr. Harpster worked as vice president of sales with Delafoil Inc., Perrysburg. Kathleen “Nancy” Dolbey, 81, of rural Middle Point, died 11:48 a.m. Monday at St. Rita’s Medical Center. She was born Nov. 26, 1920, in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, South Wales. On Dec. 26, 1946, she married Glenn E. Dolbey, who died Dec. 3, 2000. Survivors also include two daughters, Linda (Roger) Overholt of Van Wert and Kathryn (Dave) Rahrig of Delaware; a sister-in-law, Rene Gooding of England; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Geoffrey Perry. Mrs. Dolbey was a homemaker and had taught elementary school in England prior to her marriage. She was a member of Middle Point Presbyterian Church and the church’s women’s group and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Van Wert Farm Bureau. Barbara Kent, 40, of Delphos, died Friday in an automobile accident. She was born Aug. 28, 1962, in Lima, to Melvin and Loretta Parsons, who survive in Spencerville. On Dec. 6, 1980, she married Joseph Ulysses Kent, who survives in Delphos. Other survivors include four daughters, Heidi Kent, Emily A. Kent, Nichole R. Kent and Brooke K. Kent of Delphos; a sister, Brenda Barnes of Delphos; two brothers, Allen Robert and Lee Parsons of Spencerville; and a grandmother, Doris Frances Parsons of Delphos. She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Edith (Tarrant) and Trumin Elli Rentfro; paternal grandfather, Melvin A. Parsons; and a brother Mark W. Parsons. Mrs. Kent had been a homemaker. She was a member of The Church of Latter Day Saints. She graduate high school in Ohio and enjoyed crafts, sewing, crocheting and knitting. Private family services will be held. There is no visitation.

James L. Flynn

James L. Flynn, 79, of Lima, died 8:30 a.m. Monday at his residence. He was born Dec. 6, 1922, in Pittsburgh, to Edward and Margaret (Beery) Flynn. On Feb. 14, 1970, he married Marie F. Walzer Bluemling, who survives in Lima. Other survivors include two sons, Edward (Susan) Flynn of Plantation, Fla., and James (Kathy) Flynn of Lancaster, Pa.; two daughters, Nancy Flynn and Alice (Buster) Jones of Pittsburgh; two stepsons, Edward Bluemling and Robert (Dee VanKirk) Bluemling of Pittsburgh; a sister, Regina Rumberger of Naples, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Russell Flynn; two brothers, Jerry and Ted Flynn; and two sisters, Margaret Driscoll and Ursula O’Donnell. Mr. Flynn had worked at Kelsey-Hayes Wheel Co., Pittsburgh, and Romulus, Mich., and then was a quality control engineer and metallurgist for Chrysler in Michigan. He was then transferred to Lima with Chrysler Defense to open the Tank Plant. He retired in 1983. He was also an instructor at Schoolcraft College, Livonia, Mich., and taught tech courses in metallurogy, theory, laboratory, print reading and basic and advanced foundry theory practices. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Lima, and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the Rev. David M. Ross officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, Lima. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. today and 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, where a parish wake service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday.
