Margaret Ballard
Margaret "Maggie" (Fraser) Ballard, of Cave Creek, Ariz., formerly of
Akron and Middletown, Ohio, died unexpectedly but comfortably,
surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000.
She was born in Middletown, Ohio, on April 25, 1925, to Robert
Russell and Birdie Violet Fraser, the second of three children. A
gymnast and dancer during her childhood, she was a cheerleader at
Middletown High School and studied drafting at VPI in Blacksburg,
Va., during World War II. After the war, Maggie founded her own
dance studio but soon gave it up to wed her childhood friend and
neighbor, Lee Ballard. Lee and Maggie settled in Akron in 1960 and
raise their three children. She was a devoted wife and mother who
tirelessly cheered her family on in their pursuits. In addition,
Maggie was an accomplished seamstress, chef and pianist as well as
an expert furniture refinisher, upholsterer and gardener. In her
later years, she devoted her energies to mastering computerized
knitting. Many are lucky to have in their possession a one-of-a-kind
jacket, sweater, afghan or scarf handcrafted by Maggie.
Unconventional and uncompromising, Maggie was a true "Renaissance
Woman."
One of her legacies will be her kindness and generosity to all
creatures, human and otherwise. Several family pets owe their lives
to her tender care; the tailess bird, Chirp; the orphaned opossum,
Orkie; and the more domesticated animals including Rosie Peach,
Killer, Buster and Aurora.
She had an indomitable will that served her well during her life. She
never gave up and never stopped trying, even in the face of seemingly
insurmountable health problems. Maggie and Lee retired to Cave Creek,
Ariz., in 1995, because the climate was kind to her breathing
condition. It was there that she came to appreciate the Native
American Indian philosophies of courage and spirit, all of which
helped her in her final days.
Preceding her in death were her father, Robert Russell Fraser and her
mother, Birdie Violet Fraser; a brother, Russ Fraser; and a sister,
Pat Johnson.
She will be sorely missed by those surviving her including her
husband of 52 years and forever friend, Lee Ballard; sons Michael
(Hilary) Ballard of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Scott (Lisa) Ballard of
Toledo, Ohio; her daughter, Leslie (Don) Kepple of Akron; as well as
eight grandchildren.
Maggie's earthly remains are no more, but her spirit soars on the
winds high above the desert she came to cherish.
MEMORIALS: Memorial contributions may be made to Foot Hills Animal
Rescue, 6061 E. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek, Ariz. 85331."When you
were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in a
manner that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice." (a
Native American Proverb)
