Elva M. Alfrey
Mrs. Elva Mae Alfrey, 76, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at the Willow Knoll Nursing Home. She was born in Salt Lick, Ky., on Aug. 3, 1923, to Leonard and Pricilla Roberson, and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. Alfrey was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Raymond and Ledford Roberson. She leaves her husband of 58 years, Chester R. Alfrey of Middletown; three sons, Ray Alfrey, and his wife, Linda, and Richard Alfrey, and his wife, Jayne, all of Trenton, and Gary Alfrey of Middletown; seven grandchildren, Jeff and Rick Alfrey, Krista Alarcon, Shelly Barrett, and Ryan, Cory and Jennifer Alfrey; and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Julia Hatfield of Carlisle.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Joseph Baker-Stevens Funeral Home. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Camilla R. Barrett
Camilla Renee Barrett, 16, of Troy, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident on Polecat Road in Troy. She was daughter of Cindy L. Noble and Robert J. Barrett Sr. and was born in Troy on Feb. 25, 1984. Miss Barrett was a sophomore at Troy High School where she an athletic trainer, belonged to the Astra Club and was a member of the Troy fast pitch softball team at the school. She was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Troy and served as a youth minister and server. Among her survivors are her parents; a brother, Robbie Barrett, a student at Bowling Green University; maternal grandparents, Ray and Norma Noble of Hamilton, Ohio; and paternal grandfather, Charles C. Barrett Sr. of Middletown. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Veronica Barrett.
ARRANGEMENTS: Mass of Christian Burial is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Troy, Ohio, with Father Thomas Brunner as celebrant. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Troy. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Baird Funeral Home, 555 N. Market St., in Troy.

Ivan Benton
Ivan G. Benton, age 58, of 5111 Brandy Court, Hamilton, died Friday afternoon at his residence. He was born in Caney, Ky., April 14, 1941, a son of Carl and Myrtle (Gibson) Benton and attended Hazel Green Academy in Wolfe County, Ky., where he had many happy memories and special friends. On Nov. 30, 1963, he married Jean Williams and they enjoyed 36 years together. He had worked for 23 years for Hoerner-Waldorf/Raymond Bag/Champion Papers in Middletown, then was a cabinet maker for 11 years for the Hamilton Fixture Company, retiring in 1988 due to ill health. He was a member of the Edgewood Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Tami and husband John Franklin of Lexington, Ky. and Trisha and husband Ron Miller of Hamilton; five grandchildren, Rebekah, Andrew, Tyler, Gabi and Wesley; four sisters, Evalee Lykins, Rella Barrett and husband Don, Sue Hosmer and husband Harley and Levota Oligee and husband Tom; three brothers, Charles and Ethel Benton, Earl and Re Benton, and Elwood and Jeanie Benton; sister-in-law, Pauline McDonald and husband Wayne; brother-in-law, Paul Sorrell; schoolmate and longtime friend Kenneth Barker of Caney, Ky. and special nephew, Gene Siler. He was preceded in death by his parents; by a sister Oleta Sorrell; three brothers, Paul Benton, Ernest Benton and Lonnie Ray Benton; niece Debbie Benton and nephew Larry Sorrell.
ARRANGEMENTS: Friend may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Edgewood Baptist Church, 5335 Trenton-Oxford Road, Trenton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Deemerce Brown
Deemerce Brown, 74, of 742 N. University Blvd., died Friday, March 31, 2000 at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Morgan County, Ky., on March 26, 1926, the daughter of Royal and Lula (Howard) Bailey. Preceding her in death was her husband, Glenn in 1995. Surviving are a son, Edgar Scotland Brown of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, James Bailey of Middletown; a sister, Blanche Dineen of St. Charles, Mo. and three grandchildren, Andrew Morris Brown, Shafer Glenn Brown and Wells Scotland Brown II.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 until 11 a.m. at the Unglesby-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Brown Family Cemetery, Kentucky, at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Lucille E. Brown
Mrs. Lucille Esther Brown, 83, of Lewisville, Texas, a former resident of Middletown, Ohio, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2000, at the Medical Center of Lewisville. She was born in Kansas on Jan. 25, 1917, to Walter and Carrie Oester Wright. She married Robert L. Brown and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Middletown, Ohio. She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Owens of Cincinnati, Ohio; a son, Timothy Brown of Lewsisville, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service is planned for a later date in Lynchburg, Ohio. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist in Middletown, Ohio. Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home of 148 W, Church St., Lewisville, Texas, is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Coomer
Gladys Coomer, 62, longtime resident of Austin, Texas, formerly of Germantown, died March 27, 2000, with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Coomer. She is survived by her daughter, Katrina Coomer of Austin; her mother; five sisters and numerous other family members. Gladys was employed with Whole Foods Market in Austin.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services were held March 31 at Deaton Funeral Home in Jackson, Ky.

Gerald E. Cox
Gerald E. "Hunky" Cox, 73, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at 7:37 a.m. at Middletown Regional Hospital where he had been a patient for 12 days. He was born on Oct. 6, 1926, in Germantown, Ohio, to Benjamin and Mary E. (Lakes) Cox. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in July, 1946. Mr. Cox was a carpenter for McGraw Construction Co. for 20 years. He then moved to Nebraska and was a self-employed carpenter before moving back to Middletown seven years ago. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 528. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Mary Cox; and four brothers, Arthur, William, Edison and Kenneth Cox. Surviving are his loving companion of seven years, Edna; a son, William Cox of Cortland, Neb.; three daughters, Phyliss Bourne, and her husband, Duane, of Lincoln, Neb., Becky Saathoff of Pickrell, Neb., and Mary Graff, and husband, Tim, of Beatrice, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Douglas R. "Tom" Cox, and his wife, Gerry, of Franklin; three sisters, Delliah Smith of Miamisburg, Della Hoskins of Franklin and Elizabeth McGuire, and her husband, Everett, of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Herr-Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St., in Middletown. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the funeral home, with the Revs. Billy D. Collins and Wayne Cox officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery, with military services conducted by the American Legion Post 218 Honor Guard.

Iannal L. Creager
Mrs. Iannal L. Creager, 68, of 3119 Finley St., Middletown, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2000, at 9:08 a.m. at Hospice of Dayton where she had been a patient for four days. She was born on March 6, 1932, in Saldee, Ky., to Harry and Serena (McQueen) Strong. She was a homemaker and a member of the Yankee Road First Church of God in Middletown. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Serena Strong; and five brothers, Carlo, Harlan, Taylor, Alex and Tom Strong. Mrs. Creager is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dale F.; two brothers, Ollie Strong, and his wife, Shirley, and Donald Strong, and his wife, Marilyn, all of Middletown; four sisters, Alberta Rice of Hazard, Ky., June Moore of Jackson, Ky., Sarah Short of Trenton, Ohio, and Flossie Haddix, and husband, Ledford, of Erlanger, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Madeline DeJarnette
Mrs. Madeline "Dottie" DeJarnette, 78, of Middletown, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in New Castle, Pa., on July 23, 1921, the daughter of Nicholas Eugene Lewis and Evelyn (Mann) Lewis. Mrs. DeJarnette was a member of Holy Family Parish. Among her survivors are two sons, Robert Heller of Middletown and Steven (Sandy) DeJarnette of Florida; a brother-in-law, Martin Schaffer of Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lewis of Middletown and Janet Lewis of Texas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, on May 2, 1996; her parents; two brothers, Bob and Eugene Lewis; and three sisters, Thelma South, Julie Ann Schaffer and Evelyn Lewis.

Willie Edwards Sr.
Willie James Edwards Sr., 49, of Middletown departed from this life Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born Nov. 28, 1950, in Opleila, Ala., to Annie Lee Jackson and the late Willie B. Edwards. Willie grew up in Middletown and was educated in the Middletown school system. He was known to his family and friends as "Big Money." He worked most of his life as a drywall hanger for the union. During his illness he still tried to be a cheerful person to be around. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted mother, Antoinette Edwards of Middletown; four sons, Willie Edwards Jr. and Billy (Tracy) Danner, both of Middletown, Larry (Char) Danner of Franklin and Adam (Connie) Danner of Hamilton; 14 grandchildren; five brothers, Virgil Baker, Earnest (Janie) Baker, Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Jackson, all of Middletown and Boyd (Melanie) Jackson of West Middletown; four sisters, Lynette (Aaron) Thompson of Middletown, Carla Jo Woolford of Columbus, Stacy (Aubrey) Bellard of Middletown and Mary Watson of Middletown; aunts, Anne Mae Tolbert, Edna Lampkin, Nancy Collier and Bedella Rakestraw; one uncle, James Lampkin; devoted friends and companions, Adam Dennis and Delinda Saggus; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and special friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie B. Edwards; brother, Larry Edwards and a sister, Betty Ann McKeller.

Lucy A. Griffey
Mrs. Lucy A. Griffey, 72, of Middletown, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at St. Clair Medical Center in Morehead, Ky. She was born on June 1, 1927, in Wellington, Ky., the daughter of Edward Wilson and Emma (Fields) Wilson. Mrs Griffey was a nurse's aide at Barbara Parke Care Center for 11 years. She is survived by her mother, Emma Wilson; a son, Donald (Sue) Griffey of Middletown; two daughters, Sandra (James) Clay and Jackie (Russell) Back, both of Middletown; a brother, Vernon (Edna) Wilson of Frenchburg, Ky., a sister, Mary Charlotte Bliston of Franklin; nine grandchildren, Donald Ray Griffey, Peter John Griffey, Rheaghan Bargeron, Laura Ryan Clay, Rachael Clay, Justin Jon Seelye, Jennifer Rae Seelye, Dylan Storm Griffey and Russell Floyd Back III; and three great-grandchildren, Maliki and Nathaniel Dunlap and Jerek Bargeron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cambridge Griffey Jr. in 1983; and her father, Edward Wilson.

Sylvia M. Harp
Mrs. Sylvia M. Harp, 74, of Middletown, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000. She was born on July 15, 1925, in Menifee County, Ky., but lived in the Middletown area most of her life. Mrs. Harp had worked as a job setter for General Motors where she worked for 51 years. She retired in 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Harp in 1986; her parents, Fred and Katy Mullins; two daughters, Stella Louise and Melinda; and two brothers, James and Seldon Mullins. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Gibbons of Franklin; sons Virgil E. Harp of Camden and William V. Harp of Franklin; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Reese and Ralph Mullins, both of California, and Marvin and Darrell Mullins, both of Florida.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Joseph Baker-Stevens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Everett Crockett officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Grace King
Mrs. Grace King, 88, of 4015 Grand Ave., died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at 1:15 p.m. She was born in Williamson, W.Va., on Feb. 9, 1912, the daughter of David and Rose (Ball) Mounts, and lived in Middletown most of her life. She first worked for the P. Lorillard Co., then for Aeronca during World War II. After the war, Mrs. King and her husband owned and operated King's Drive-in in Excello, Ohio. Her primary focus in life was her family. She is survived by three daughters, Rose Carson of Omaha, Neb., and Carol Grosardt and Barbara Hudson, both of Middletown; a son, John C. King Jr. of Miamisburg, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. King in 1981; a daughter, Mildred Forman in 1954; and two grandchildren, Michael Eugene Tomilson and Lori Diane Grosardt.
ARRANGEMENTS: Services will be held at the convenience of the family, with burial in Woodside Cemetery. Arrangements are by Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home.

Ellen Turner McCarden
Mrs. Ellen McCarden, 93, was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, March 27, 2000, from Hawthorn Glen Nursing Center. She was born on Dec. 16, 1906, in Gallion, Ala. She was the daughter of Amelia Boddie and John Black. Ellen graduated from Industrial High School and attended the school of nursing. She was a faithful member of Murchison Chapel C.M.E. Church. She was retired from St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She will always be remembered by her family and friends for her smile, love and kindness. Ellen was married to Leonard Elgie Turner. To this union four children were born; Leonard Elgie (Edith) Turner of Dayton, Ohio, Nira (Grady) Love, Walter (Melodee) Turner of Middletown and Margaret Anne (John) Moore of Fairborn, Ohio. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Ellen married Chester McCarden in 1970 and he preceded her in death in 1980. Also preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Dwellie and Walter; and a sister, Frankie. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to all the wonderful staff, nurses, aides and helpers of the Hawthorn Glen Nursing Center who cared for our beloved mother and grandmother.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at noon Friday, March 31, at Murchison Chapel C.M.E. Church, 611 Main St., Middletown, with the Rev. Charles J. Foggie officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon until service time Friday at the church. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall-Jordan Memorial Chapel.

Danny Meerhoff
Danny Meerhoff, 52, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2000. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on April 27, 1947, and was employed at the Bradford Trucking Co. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Kathryn Meerhoff; and a brother, Richard Meerhoff. Mr. Meerhoff is survived by his wife, Laura, of Middletown; four daughters, Tina Short, and her husband, Chuck, Danielle Kahne, and her husband, Jason, and Tabatha and Trisha Meerhoff; a son and daughter-in-law, Mel and Jenny Meerhoff; six grandchildren; a sister, Pat Newberry; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Mary Meerhoff; a sister-in-law, Joan Meerhoff; and a devoted companion, Devon Vick, and her children, Terrence James and Meghan Vick.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the George C. Martin Funeral Home, Northridge Chapel, 5040 Frederick Pike in Dayton. Pastor Steve Veg will officiate. Ralph J. Melampy
FRANKLIN -- Ralph J. Melampy, 78, of Franklin, passed away on Friday morning, March 31, 2000, at his residence. Ralph was born on Sept. 20, 1921, and lived most of his life in Warren County. He served in World War II and belonged to both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was employed at the Inland Division of General Motors for more than 35 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will H. and Kenneth (Bishop) Melampy; a sister, Anna Rose Moore; and a brother, David Melampy. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth E. Melampy; a son, Dale J. (Linda) Melampy; three grandchildren, Rachel, Zachary and Sara Beth, all of Middletown; three sisters, Helen Gardner, Kenneth Munger and Margaret Thoma; and a brother, Donald Melampy.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at St. Mary's Church in Franklin, with Father Joseph Bruening as celebrant. Visitation will be held at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a military service at 7 p.m. by the American Legion Post 218 Honor Guard.

James W. Morris
FRANKLIN -- James W. Morris, 58, of 3166 Pearl Drive, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born in Franklin, Ohio, on June 1, 1941, the son of John and Anna (Chasteen) Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters. Mr. Morris is survived by his wife of 38 years, Donna; sons Jeff Morris, and his wife, Davina, James Morris, and wife, Belinda, and Tracy Taylor, all of Franklin; brothers Austin Morris, and wife, Dorcas, of Miamisburg, Danny Morris, and wife, Nancy, of West Carrollton, Robert Morris, and wife, Carol, of Arnold, Calif., John Morris, and wife, Luanne, of Kalispell, Mont., and Richard Morris, and wife, JoAnn, of Stanton, Ky.; sisters Mary Watkins of Leeco, Ky., Hattie Webb, and husband, Russell, of Miamisburg, Rose Marie Blackmore of Middletown and Deloris Rogers, and husband, Vaughn, of Stanton, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alexander Rhodus Jr.
Alexander Rhodus Jr., 73, of Middletown, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2000, at his residence. He was born April 27, 1926, in Middletown to Amanda and Alexander Rhodus Sr. He had lived in Middletown all his life. He was a self-employed contractor for 52 years and a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amanda and Alexander Rhodus Sr.; four brothers, Charlie, Earl, Truman and Bill Rhodus; one sister, Nannie Hollan and a step-son, Danny Clemons. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Carolyn; one son, Rusty Rhodus and wife Coreena of Middletown; five daughters, Marcella Brewer and husband Willis of Middletown, Joyce Rose and husband Bill of Middletown, Pam Thacker of Friendsville, Tenn., Carol Rhodus of Cincinnati and Linda Rose and husband Wilmer of Middletown; one brother, Arthur Rhodus of Franklin; five sisters, Viola Meleski of Middletown, Marie Neal and husband Russell of Middletown, Miva Martin of Middletown, Ruth Cates of Middletown and Lucille Osborne of Upper Sandusky; two step daughters, Terri Habig of Middletown and Tammy Fraley of Middletown; three step sons, Tom Seabolt of Middletown, Scott Seabolt of Middletown and Randy Clemons of Middletown; 34 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Edward Riley
Edward Riley, lovingly known to all as "Big Ed," was born on March 27, 1915, in Jefferson, Ga. He departed this life on Wednesday, March 29, 2000. Edward came to Middletown in 1937 to live with his Aunt Luvater and Uncle Ira Bryant. He went to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1937 before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He served three and a half years including a tour of duty in the South Pacific. Edward was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Phillips on Jan. 10, 1948. They recently celebrated 52 years of marriage on Jan. 10, 2000. To this union came two children, Ralph E. Riley (Anne) and Deidra E. Marshall (Robert). Edward was a past master of the Coronation Lodge 5 Prince Hall affiliate in Milwaukee, Wis., before transferring to Tried Stone Lodge in Middletown, Ohio. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Dorothy; children Tony (Anne) of Biloxi, Miss., Deidra (Robert) and grandson, Robert Marshall Jr. of Middletown; a sister, Lula M McNeary of Milwaukee, Wis.; nieces Loretta Krueger, Janice Terry (Wayne) of Milwaukee, Edrena Jones, Paulette Hill (Robbie), Charlene Dorn (Kenny), Carlotta Smith (Stan), and Cheryl Ann Thomas of Middletown; nephews Raymond Brown of Milwaukee, Wis., and Marc, Paul and Todd Hackney, all of Middletown; first cousins Jesse Mae Webb, Christine Ringer, Pearlie Mae Jemison, Sarah Wright, Katherine Thomas, Lucy Davis, Lynda Bryant, Marquetta Riley, Rae Jean Riley, Penny Riley, and Hoyt, Donald and David Riley, all of Middletown; and a host of dear relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ora Riley; brothers John, Herbert, Aurthonia and Carl; and a cousin, Marie Mitchell.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1507 Yankee Road, with the Rev. James F. Hux officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Alberta Robinson
Mrs. Alberta (Littler) Robinson, 89, of 4526 Skylark Drive, Englewood, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was born on Sept. 10, 1910, in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Richard and Edna (Philburn) Littler and formerly resided in Middletown for 40 years. She was employed by Rike's Department Stores for 25 years, retiring in 1971. Mrs. Robinson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Franklin. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, James A. Robinson in 1977; brothers Edward and Elwood Littler; her stepmother, Mary; and son-in-law, Jack Lee Auvil. She is survived by her son, Billy L. Robinson, and his wife, Grace, of Middletown, and their children, Gregory, Jennifer and Cheryl; daughter Carolyn Auvil of Englewood, and her children, Ed, Sue, Tina, John and Robert; a sister, Gladys Watson of Enon; and great-grandchildren Derek, Alyssa, Yvonne, Nicole, Caitlin, Olivia, Joshua and Jacquelyn.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at Unglesby-Anderson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Vernon Risner officiating. Burial will be in Woodhill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Edna Sageser
Edna Delores Sageser, age 68, a resident of the Garden Manor Retirement Center, died Friday morning at Middletown Regional Hospital. She had formerly resided at 426 Cranewood Drive, Trenton. She was born in Olympia, Ky., Feb. 28, 1932, a daughter of Jesse and Pearl (Downs) Copher. She was a longtime member of the Yankee Road Church of God, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for 30 years; was a member of the Naomi Sewing Circle and a member of the Missionary Ladies. Her primary interests were her family and her church. She is survived by two daughters, Ginger King (husband Jeff) of Trenton and Connie Dixon of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Peter Dixon, Matthew Dixon, Jennifer Dixon, Nicole Dixon, Jeffrey King and Erin King; four great-grandchildren, Brendan Dixon, Nicholas Dixon, Shelby Dixon and Brianna Dixon; three sisters, Juanita Thomas of Lexington, Ky, Rebecca Hamphill of Louisiana and Edith Jones of Paris, Ky.; and brothers Lloyd and Marvin Copher, both of Paris, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Sageser in 1987 and by a sister, Virginia Bartlett and a brother, Fred Copher.

Osborne Seals
GERMANTOWN -- Osborne Seals, 78, of 50 Pagett Drive, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2000, at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born on March 2, 1922, in Jackson County, Ky., the son of John and Rhoda (Langdon) Seals. Mr. Seals was a millwright and retired from the Dupps Co. after 13 years. He was a member of the Full Gospel Outreach in Middletown, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Osborne; brothers Levi, George and Chesley Seals; and sisters Edith and Randy. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Hazel; three sons, Michael and Rick, both of Middletown, and Richard of Germantown; two daughters, Jennifer Mullin and Patricia Smith, both of Germantown; a brother, Vernon Carmack of Germantown; three sisters, Flossie Burger and Zada Petry, both of Dayton, and Mary Powers of Middletown; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Shackelford
Lawrence (Larry) Shackelford, 66, of Hillsboro, Ohio, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Highland District Hospital. He was born in Lee County, Ky., on Nov. 14, 1933, the son of Oscar and Ada (Vires) Shackelford. He attended the Fairview Church of Christ. Mr. Shackelford was a retired master plumber/plumber inspector, and with his wife, operated the "Now and Then Antiques." He was a Marine Corps veteran and served during the Korean War. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, David Shackelford on Sept. 15, 1989; and four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Sue (Beavan) Shackelford whom he married on July 18, 1953; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Gabriele Shackelford of Kempner, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Daniel Estle of Hillsboro and Sherry and Terry Ausman of Hillsboro; his mother-in-law, Dale Beavan of Hazard, Ky.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and one brother and five sisters.

Ann Shimer
Ann Shimer, 84, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Winter Haven Hospital. She was born May 23, 1915, in Middletown. She was a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carl "Dutch" Shimer, who died in 1992; parents, John and Minnie (King) Specht and several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Shimer is survived by two daughters, Jan Shimer of Winter Haven, Fla. and Karen (Donald) Bowlin of Matthews N.C.; four grandchildren, Dan Wenzel of Winter Haven, Fla., Kristy (Kevin) Slaughter of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jeff Wenzel of Houston, Texas and Kari (John) Farmer of North Smithfield, R.I.; two great-grandchildren, Steven Carl Slaughter of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Elizabeth Ann Slaughter of Lawrenceville, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.

Edna Smith
Edna M. Smith, age 93, of 3111 Yankee Road, died Saturday, April 1 at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Magoffin County, Ky., Sept. 22, 1905, a daughter of Sherman and Darkie (Fletcher) Marshall and had lived in this area for over 50 years. She was the owner of the Chatterbox Restaurant on Main Street and also worked for several years at J.C. Penny's. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Unity Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Irene Gillum and Della South, both of Middletown; six grandchildren, Barbara Hembree of Middletown, Debbie Collins of Middletown, John Ross of Florida, Rodney Blount of California, Trebbie Blount of Oregon and Joanne Bunnell of Trenton; six great-grandchilcren, Jeri Lynn Roberts, Jodi Stolz, Tina Abner, Lance Bunnell, Jason Collins and Candy Collins; eight great-great-grandchildren, Dana Ricketts, Tyla Cheyenne Ricketts, Spencer Stolz, Amber Lynn Roberts, Josh Roberts, Alex Bunnell, Jordan Abner and Tori Abner; two sisters, Jeweline Hale of Chelsea, Mich. and Versie Risner of Lexington, Ky. and a brother, Earl Marshall of Grayson, Ky. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Josephine Joseph; a son, Corsey Everett Joseph; a grandson, Ricky Gillum and a sister and three brothers.

Ola Smith
Mrs. Ola Mae Smith, 74, of Mason, Ohio, formerly of Augusta, Ga., died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Dayton Heart Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She was a native of Birmingham, Ala., and was born on June 10, 1925. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She will be remembered for her kindness toward others. Relatives recall "she never turned anyone away." She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Smith in 1989; her parents, Joseph and Dealy Staton; two sisters, Ruth Wilcutt, and a twin sister, Viola Mary Stanley; and two brothers, Howard and Harleth Staton. Surviving are five sons, Jimmy (Dianne) Smith of Middletown, John Smith of Louisville, Ky., Larry (Diana) Smith of Middletown, Bill Smith of Avon, Conn., and Steven Smith of Mason, Ohio; three daughters, E. Ruth Smith of Augusta, Ga., Carol Adkins and Bill Napier of Mason, Ohio, and Barbara Kraft of Augusta, Ga.; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Frank Staton of Tarrant, Ala.

Pauline A. Swartz
Mrs. Pauline A. Swartz, 79, formerly of 200 Arcadia Drive, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Bethesda North Hospital. She was born in Russell, Ky., on March 18, 1921, the daughter of W. P. Carter and Gladie Travillian Carter, and lived most of her life in this area. Mrs. Swartz had worked for Shillito's, then later retired as a department manager from Elder-Beerman. She was a member of the Tylersville Road Christian Church in Mason and the Eastern Star of Covington, Ky. She is survived by her son, Robert Swartz of West Chester; a stepdaughter, Vicki Engel of Frankfort, Ky.; a stepson, Ben Swartz of Parkersburg, W. Va.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. Richard Carter of Ashland, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben R. Swartz in 1998; and a brother, Jack Carter in 1996.

Fallie Walker Sr.
Fallie Walker Sr., 83, of Middletown, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Hospice of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. He was born to the late Walter and Carrie Snowden Walker in El Dorado, Ark. Fallie served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Aug. 19, 1942, until Oct. 14, 1945. During his years of service he was awarded two Bronze Stars, a lapel button, an American Defense Service Button, a European African Middle East Campaign Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal and overseas bars. Fallie came to Middletown, Ohio, from El Dorado, Ark., and gained employment at Armco Steel Co. He remained with Armco for 45 years of dedicated service. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, a sister and two brothers. Fallie leaves to cherish precious memories, three sons, Fallie Walker Jr. of Norfolk, Va., and Derrick and Curtis Walker, both of Middletown; three daughters, Carolyn and Joanne' Walker, both of Middletown, and Joyce Gordon of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Margaret L. Terrell of Saginaw, Mich.; an aunt, Lois Moss of Oakland, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Maurice D. Walker
EATON -- Maurice D. Walker, 67, of Eaton, formerly of Gratis, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind. He was born on March 27, 1933, in Tiline, Ky., to Jesse and Mina (Ward) Walker. He graduated from Murray State University with a bachelor of science degree and from Miami University with a master's degree. Mr. Walker served in the U.S. Army Security Agency for two and a half years. He was a school teacher and principal at Gratis High School and then taught business at Preble Shawnee High School until retiring in 1993 with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Gratis Lions Club for more than 30 years, the Preble County Historical Society, Preble County Retired Teachers Association and the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Preble County. He was elected to two terms as Gratis Township clerk and was currently a Gasper Township trustee. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy; three children, Jesse (Lori) Walker of Eaton, and Julie (Greg) Anslinger and Jana Agee, all of Middletown; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews; and two brothers, Carroll (Marion) Walker of Tiline, Ky., and Gary (Zina) Walker of Gratis.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at the Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home in Gratis, Ohio, with Pastor Randy Smith officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m.
