Alice (Sharits) Hall
Alice Faye (Sharits) Hall, 55, formerly of Trenton, passed away Friday, July 3, 1998, in Denver, Colo.
She was born on Sept. 9, 1942, the daughter of John and Ruth Sharits.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald Hall and Douglas Hall, both of California; two daughters, Kimberly and Machelle, both of California; 14 grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Bowers, and her husband, Paul, of Trenton, and Peggy Lairson, and her husband, Dan, of Trenton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruth Sharits; and a brother, John W. Sharits.
Her remains were cremated in Denver, Colo.
Sister Mary Ellen Hampel
Sister Mary Ellen, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at the Motherhouse in Oldenburg, Ind.
Sister Mary Ellen taught at John XXIII School and was the librarian for the school. She left Middletown in 1991 to take charge of the switchboard operation at the Motherhouse.
She is survived by Mary Infeld, of Middletown; Ruth Vogt and Eileen Toerner, of Hamilton; Rita Peters, of Cincinnati; and Lois Hampel, of Carlisle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Al and Eleanor Hampel; and her brother, Anthony "Bud'' Hampel, all of Middletown.
Visitation, followed by Mass of Christian Burial was on Monday, July 13, at the Sisters of St. Francis Chapel in Oldenburg.
Walter H. Hatcher Sr.
Walter H. Hatcher Sr., 83, of 3201 Manchester Road, died Monday, July 6, 1998 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 16, 1914 in Mercer County, W.Va., the son of Charles William and Julia (Ferguson) Hatcher.
He retired from the Champion Paper Co. in 1982. He attended the Roselawn Baptist Church and the Girard Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Monnie A. (Garretson) Hatcher; two daughters, Julia Hall, and her husband, Doug, of Middletown, Analee Short, and her husband, Don, of Middletown; a son, Walter H. Hatcher Jr., of Middletown; stepdaughter, Wanda M. Mills, and her husband, Billy, of Suffolk, Va.; two stepsons, Glennis H. Bell, and his wife, Deanna, of Elyria, Ohio, and Dennis H. Bell, of West Chester; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and 23 step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; nine sisters, and six brothers.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Revs. Bobby Reed and David Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Butler County Memorial Park.

Lonnie Hatfield
FRANKLIN - Lonnie Hatfield, 75, of Franklin, passed on at Middletown Regional Hospital at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 1998.
He was born on Jan. 10, 1923, in Williamsburg, Ky. Lonnie was the 11th of 13 children of Thomas Burl and Nancy Ann (DePew) Hatfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents and all his brothers and sisters.
Mr. Hatfield is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruby; two sons, Kenneth Hatfield, and his wife, Robyn, of Carlisle, and Donald Hatfield, and his wife, Diane, of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Brenda Rothwell, and her husband, Sam, of Middletown; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hatfield joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 and served in Farson, Wyo. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany with the Third Army, Second Infantry, Fifth Division, returning home in 1946.
He was employed at Fisher Body in Fairfield from 1949 to 1987. Mr. Hatfield was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge 55, Free & Accepted Masons, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Franklin. He was also a founding member of the Franklin Emergency Squad. Mr. Hatfield attended Hillcrest Baptist Church in Carlisle, and loved the Lord Jesus Christ.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Unglesby-Anderson Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second St., Franklin, with the Rev. Roger Williams officiating. Burial will be in Springboro Cemetery with full military honors.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Candy Higgins
Candy Higgins, 88, of Dayton, passed away Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Miami Valley Hospital.
She was born Feb. 19, 1910, in Morgan County, Ky., the daughter of Richard Milburn and Molly (Craft) Higgins.
She was a member of ALCO-AIDES on Third Street for more than 20 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Faye Snyder, Paula and Rob Barker, and Judith and Richard Barker Pekarski; one son, Richard and Juanita Barker; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and former spouse, Chester P. Barker.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Tobias Funeral Home Third Street Chapel, 1817 E. Third St., Dayton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Timothy Hume officiating. Interment will be in Middletown Historical Cemetery (Old Pioneer).
Henry Howard Jr.
Henry C. "Hank'' Howard Jr., 72, of Middletown, died Saturday, July 11, 1998 at his residence.
He was born on April 8, 1926, in Elliott County, Ky. He spent most of his life in Middletown.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a truck driver for the Teamsters Local Union and for the Suburban Motor Freight. He worked for 30 years before retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge 501 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge 3809.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald "Bill'' Howard, in 1961; a granddaughter, Jodi Walters, in 1981; parents, Henry C. and Jewell Howard; brothers, Arthur, Jeff, Bill Joe and Eugene Howard; and sister Juanita Howard.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean; children, Jerry C. Howard, and his wife, Patty, of Gratis, Kathy Froman, and her husband, Paul, of Middletown, Tami Claborn, and her husband, Joe, of Franklin, Doug Howard, and his wife, Christina, of Middletown, Dave Howard, and his wife, Donna, of Middletown; 12 grandchildren, Missy (Mike), Rick, Ronnie, Becky, Billy, Craig, Christina, Josh, Ashley, Kyle, David, and J.R.; a great-grandchild, Benjamin; brothers, Frank Howard, of Crestview, Fla., Ray Howard, of Franklin, Clifford "John'' Howard, of Middletown, Linville Howard, of Lebanon, Jason Howard, of Middletown, and Thomas Howard, of Middletown; and a sister, Christine McGuire, of Monroe.

Gwen J. Hunt
Gwen J. Hunt, 63, of Middletown died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Mercy-Hamilton Hospital.
She was born Oct. 29, 1934, in Middletown, the daughter of William W. and Bertha M. Carr. She was a homemaker and member of the Wesleyan Church East in Miamisburg.
She is survived by her husband of eight years, Earl L. Hunt; two sons, James (Shari) Cheesman and Archie (Ketha) Cheesman, both of Middletown; two daughters, Betty (Mike) Shoemaker of Middletown and Cindy (Andy) Matus of West Chester; three sisters, Betty Layton and Evelyn Gutshall, both of Middletown, and Faye Bray of Corbin, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bill and Charles Carr; and three sisters, Mary Noe, Mildred Carrington and Barbara Carr.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Baker Stevens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Shuler officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery.
Athella "Maxine'' Hupp
Athella "Maxine'' Hupp, 81, of Carlisle, formerly of Germantown, passed away Sunday, July 5, 1998 at Middletown Regional Hospital. A native of Middletown, she was born on March 23, 1917 to the late Ernest and Anna Lee (Scott) Kees. She resided in Germantown until 1977 and then moved to Carlisle. She retired from Kettering Hospital in 1982.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Roy Hupp (1997), and her daughter, Mary Kathryn Hupp (1953).
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Mann, and her husband, Ray, of Carlisle; two granddaughters, Malia Mann and Rachel Weybright, and her husband, Jim; and a great-grandson, Jacob Weybright.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Dalton Funeral Home, 6900 Weaver Road, Germantown. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ron Siebert officiating. Burial will be in the Germantown Cemetery.
Thelma M. Hatfield
Mrs. Thelma Martin Hatfield, 70, of 2207 Hawthorne St., Middletown, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Middletown Regional Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Powell County, Ky., and was born on April 12, 1928, the daughter of Cortney Campbell and Pearl Hall. She was a member of United Christian Center in Middletown.
Mrs. Hatfield was preceded in death by her husband, Algier Martin.
She is survived by two sons, Montford Martin of Middletown and John Martin of Clay City, Ky.; a daughter, Angela Lewis Gregg of Middletown; a brother, Donald Campbell of Middletown; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Christian Center, 1236 Central Ave., Middletown, by the Rev. John W. Ward. Burial will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Robert L. Higgins
Robert L. Higgins, 79, of Pasadena, Calif., and formerly of Middletown, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in Pasadena, Calif.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1919, in Lexington, Ky., to John H. Higgins and Frances Higgins.
He moved to Middletown in 1956 and later moved to Pasadena where he worked as a hair stylist for 40 years.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Heminia Higgins, of Pasadena, Calif.; a son, Robert Higgins, and his wife, Pamela, of Middletown; sisters, Helen Bolt, and her husband, Earl, of Walhala, S.C., Mary Frances Christian, of Cleveland, Tenn., Patricia Tallman, and her husband, James, of Melbourne, Fla., and Margaret Lockhart, and her husband, Raymond, of Middletown; and a brother, John Higgins, and his wife, Frances, of Franklin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Higgins and Frances Higgins; a brother, Carl Higgins; and a sister, Mattie Higgins-Bowman.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Mortuary in Pasadena, Calif. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. today at the St. Phillips Catholic Church in Pasadena.
Mary C. Hoff
Mary C. Hoff, 88, of Hamilton, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Garden Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Middletown on Oct. 3, 1910, the daughter of Louis and Mary (Jezik) Gaston. On June 19, 1929, in Middletown she married Harold C. Hoff and he preceded her in death on March 18, 1992. Mrs. Hoff was a member of St. Julie Billiart Parish and had been a member and past president of the Altar Rosary Society.
Survivors include three sons, Harold D. Hoff Jr. of Fullerton, Calif., LeRoy and wife Gerry Hoff of Coral Springs, Fla., and Paul D. Hoff of Matthews, N.C.; two granddaughters, Kelley Reppen and Kari Hamilton, both of Florida; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Nicholas Reppen; and four sisters, Katie Martin, Tina Ryan, Irene Downing and Josephine Kirkpatrick.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Thomas Hoff, three brothers and two sisters.
ARRANGEMENTS: Prayers will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Zettler Funeral Home, 2646 Pleasant Ave., Hamilton, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Julie Billiart Church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Betty Hogan
Mrs. Betty Hogan, 72, of 937 Flat Hollow Marina Road, Speedwell, Tenn., passed away Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 at the LaFollette Medical Center.
She was a member of the First Church of God in Franklin for more than 30 years and also attended the Yankee Road and Meadowlawn churches in Middletown; she had also joined the Well Springs Methodist Church. She was a loving wife for 51 and a half years, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who loved to spend time with her family. She was a homemaker and had been a beautician for 15 years.
She is survived by her husband, Sanford Hogan; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Barbara Hogan, of Holyoke, Mass.; daughters and sons-in-law, Melody and Jim Smith, of LaFollette, Tenn., and Belinda and David Smith, of Monroe; a sister, Edith Heaney, of California; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Cuba Sexton Powers.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family will receive friends at the Martin Funeral Home, LaFollette, Tenn., from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Mrs. Hogan will then be brought back to Middletown, where visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Rodney Williams. Burial will follow in Woodside Cemetery.
Dolores Hughes
Dolores "Peachy" Hughes, 63, of St. Clair Township, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Kettering Medical Center.
She was born on Sept. 21, 1935, in Middletown to James Fagan and Evelyn Fagan Darnold.
She was a member of First Christian Church, the Trenton Jarvis Mothers Club, and BPO Elks Hamilton Lodge 93.
She was a former secretary for eight years for the American Cancer Society.
She was also a secretary for the Red Cross in Middletown for 13 years, before retiring in December 1998.
She is survived by a son, Michael R. Hughes, of Trenton; daughters Pamela S. Pratt, and her husband, Timothy, of Hamilton, and Lora J. Schueller, and her husband, David, of Trenton; her mother, Evelyn Fagan Darnold, of Middletown; a brother, David Fagan, of Amherst, N.H.; sisters June Gurbick, of South Bend, Ind., Dorothy Wilson, of Germantown, and Carol Sue Ralston, of Cincinnati; and grandchildren Joshua and Sarah Schueller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Hughes, on June 8, 1998; and her father, James Fagan.

Osa W. Hurt
CARLISLE -- Osa W. Hurt, 83, of Carlisle, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, at Sycamore Hospital in Miamisburg.
He was born in Grassy Creek, Ky., on July 6, 1915, and had lived in the Carlisle area for 53 years. Mr. Hurt was employed as a machinist at Hoover Ball for 18 years and had also worked in Tool & Die for Mark Concepts for 16 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Miamisburg First Church of God.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Dorothy; two daughters, Carol House, and her husband, Gary, of Germantown, and Donna Dunkman, and her husband, Bryan, of Carlisle; five grandchildren, Rhonda, David, Sherry, Kayla and Krista; a brother, Raymond Hurt of Latonia, Ky.; and three sisters, Fern Carnes of Williamstown, Ky., Blanche Coldiron of Corinth, Ky., and Irene Brewer of Stanton, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Betty Hurt.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Joseph Baker-Stevens Funeral Home in Middletown, with the Revs. Mark McCain and Roy Maxwell officiating. Interment will be in Butler County Memorial Park.
