Emma Sue Schaaf
Mrs. Emma Sue Schaaf, 73, of 266 Bernard Drive, Monroe, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Middletown Regional Hospital.
She was born on April 23, 1924, in Dodge County, Ga., the daughter of William Henley Beauchamp and Susie Catherine (Parkerson) Beauchamp. Mrs. Schaaf came to the Middletown area in 1946.
She is survived by two daughters, Diana Kohr (husband Charles) of Middletown and Deborah Schaaf of Monroe; three sons, Danny Schaaf (wife Patricia) of Middletown, David (Mina) Schaaf of Guam and Tim (Lana) Schaaf of Monroe; seven grandchildren, Tammy, Christina, Tracie, Lee Ann, Mary, Melissa and Timmy; a sister, Myrtle Everidge of Byron, Ga.; a brother, Ralph Beauchamp of Adel, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1992.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stan Ellington officiating. Burial will be at Butler County Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Dale Eugene Shields
Dale Eugene Shields, 48, of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Middletown Regional Hospital.
He was born in Middletown on June 4, 1949, to the late Charles Martin and Tyvolia Shields. Dale served in the U.S. Air Force where he served his country in Vietnam.
He is survived by two sons, Dale E. (Tina) Shields of Alamogordo, N.M., and Issa (Jennifer) Shields of Middletown; one daughter, Aisha M. (Quincy) Brooks of Middletown; three brothers, Gerald Shields of San Francisco, Calif., and Tracy and Eddie Martin, both of Middletown; four sisters, Beverly Maxell of Dayton, and Anita, Rita and Lisa Martin, all of Middletown; 13 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hall-Jordan Memorial Chapel, 918 S. Main St. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at the chapel with the Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.
Joseph Singhoffer
Joseph Singhoffer, 71, of Middletown and Huntsville, Ohio, died Saturday evening, May 9, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Hamilton.
He was born in Middletown on Dec. 23, 1926. Mr. Singhoffer retired from the Middletown Paper Board Co. in 1973. He was a former member of the Middletown Eagles and Moose lodges. He was currently a member of the Indian Lake Eagles Aerie 3615 and Moose Lodge 1533.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Shaul Singhoffer; two sons, Thomas (Vicki) Singhoffer of West Elkton and Paul Singhoffer of Middletown; two daughters, Elizabeth Singhoffer of Cincinnati and Teresa (Scott) Patrick of Trenton; two brothers, John (Joyce) Singhoffer of Carlisle and Robert (Barbara) Singhoffer of Hamilton; and seven grandchildren, Danielle, Melissa and Kevin Patrick, Ellen and Eric Koenig, and Allison and Michael Singhoffer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arpad Singhoffer and Ottilia (Waczula) Singhoffer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Church in Trenton, with Father George Klein as celebrant. Interment will be at Woodside CemeȘtery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home in Middletown.
Delbert Smith
WEST CARROLLTON - Delbert Smith, 71, of Faubaush, Ky., died Friday, April 17, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington, Ky.
He was born in Hazard, Ky., on Feb. 15, 1927, the son of Floyd and Cora (Deaton) Smith. He was employed by the Miami Paper Mill in West Carrollton for 38 years as a machine tender and retired in 1988. He was also a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nellie Smith of Faubaush, Ky.; a son, Larry Gene and wife, Rebecca Smith of Faubaush, Ky.; a daughter, Phyllis Ann and husband, Wiley Mullins of Faubaush, Ky.; four brothers, Tip and Willie Smith, both of Carlisle, Hershel Smith of Franklin and Junior Smith of Arizona; two sisters, Elizabeth Horner of Franklin and Monnie Neace of West Carrollton; four grandchildren, Wiley Mullins Jr., Delbert Cole, Estill Cole and Kristina Smith.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Eaton-Anderson Funeral Home, 121 E. Second St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodhill Cemetery.
Warren Snelling
Warren "Sparky'' Snelling, 71, of Middletown, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at his residence.
He was born on March 30, 1927, in Middletown, Ohio, a son of Thelma and Tinsley Snelling who preceded him in death.
Mr. Snelling was a lifelong resident of Middletown. He retired from Armco Steel Co. in 1989 after 35 years of service. He was a member of Amanda United Methodist Church on Oxford State Road.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marie (Lemmons) Snelling; two sons, Philip Snelling of Middletown and Charles R. Snelling of Royal Oak, Mich.; a daughter, Dara Romans of Middletown; a grandson, Stephen Christopher Boster, and his wife, Raymele, of Cincinnati; a great-granddaughter, Riley Boster of Cincinnati; a sister, Jean McGill of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Truman and Daniel; and a sister, Madeline.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Amanda United Methodist Church, 1315 Oxford State Road, Middletown. The Rev. Lee Ortman will officiate. There will be no visitation.

Erma Sponsel
Mrs. Erma Sponsel, 85, of Middletown, died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at Kettering Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Menifee County, Ky., on March 7, 1913, and had lived here most of her life. Mrs. Sponsel enjoyed raising dogs and birds as a hobby.
Surviving are four sons, Gene Sponsel of Middletown, Bill Sponsel of Franklin, Gerald Johnston of Lebanon and Ova Johnston of Franklin; two daughters, Barbara Robinson of Middletown and Christine Reeves of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 28 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Sponsel.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Virginia Summers
Virginia M. Summers, 60, of New Lebanon, Ohio, died Monday, May 4, 1998, in New Lebanon.
Mrs. Summers was born on July 24, 1937, in Wire Bridge, W.Va. Her father, Carl M. Steele, is deceased, and her mother, Margaret (Ramsey) Steele, survives in Battle Creek, Mich.
Mrs. Summers was a member of Stratford Heights Church of God and was employed as a retail clerk for Elder-Beerman Co.
She is survived by her husband, Gene; a son, Gene Michael Summers, and his wife, Tammy, of Middletown; a daughter, Rosa Summers of New Lebanon; a grandson, Brent M. Summers; a brother, Mervin Steele, and his wife, Donna, of Battle Creek, Mich.; and a sister, Judy, and her husband, Joe Kurburski of Cynthiana, Ky.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home, 324 W. Main St., New Lebanon, with Pastor Walter D. Watkins officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Armeina Sanders
FRANKLIN - Armeina M. Sanders, 81, formerly of 9179 Kipton Drive, Franklin, died Monday, June 29, 1998, at Carlisle Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Echo Lake, N.J., on July 15, 1916, the daughter of Nathan and Armeina Luke Sanders.
Surviving are a daughter, Frances Brancato, and her husband, Frank, of Miamisburg, Ohio; a brother, Dominic Sanders of Newfoundland, N.J.; a sister, Catherine Matthews of Bell Mead, N.J.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 2, at Unglesby-Anderson Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second St., Franklin.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Mount Rest Cemetery in Butler, N.J.

Edward M. Shumate
Former Middletown resident Edward M. Shumate, 80, of Alexandria, Va., died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at Dewitt Army Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Va., after a long battle with emphysema.
He was born on Jan. 27, 1918, in Middletown, Ohio, the son of Edward M. Shumate Sr. and Ethel Long Shumate. He graduated from St. John's High School in Middletown and was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Alexandria, Va.
Mr. Shumate was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1986 from his job with the U.S. government where he had worked for the National Institute of Health as a printing specialist.
He is survived by his seven children, their spouses and 10 grandchildren; a son, Dr. Michael Shumate, daughter Mary, and her husband, Jeff Anderson, son Joseph, and his wife, Sue, daughter Maureen, and her husband, Robert Costanzo, a daughter, Sheila F. Shumate, son Daniel B. Shumate, daughter Kathleen, and her husband, and John Ware, all of Virginia; five stepchildren, Carolyn Harrison, Mariann Couch, and James, Frank and William Schneider, and 15 step-grandchildren, all of Ohio; his brothers, James, William, Arthur and Richard Shumate; and sisters Dorothy Cole, Winefred McPherson and Mary Villapondo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Ann (Flanagan) Shumate in 1983 and Ruth Shumate in 1998; a sister, Jean; and a brother, Jack Shumate.
Funeral services will be at 10:45 a.m. Monday, July 13, at Fort Meyer Chapel, Arlington, Va. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at Demaines Funeral Home, Backlick Road, Springfield, Va.
Shane E. Smith
Shane E. Smith, 20, of Middletown, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, in Warren County, Ohio.
He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on Nov. 7, 1977, and had lived in this area all his life. He was a construction worker.
He is survived by his mother, Doris A Baker of Middletown; his father, Darrell J. Smith of Middletown; stepfather Mike Combs and his wife, Nancy, of Middletown; a half brother, Timothy D. Smith of Middletown; three stepsisters, Lisa Taylor of Ypsilanti, Mich., Cara Combs of Middletown and Melinda Gifford, and her husband, Bruce, of Morehead, Ky.; and four stepbrothers, Mike Combs Jr. of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Andy Helton, Donnie Bowlin and Chris Combs, and his wife, Christy, all of Middletown.
He was also loved by many other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 2, at Herr-Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St., Middletown, with the Rev. Steve Cable officiating. Interment will be at Woodhill Cemetery in Franklin, Ohio.

Susie L. Short
Susie L. Short, 73, of Trenton, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at her residence.
She was born March 1, 1925, to John and Evelyn (Trent) Johnson in Blue Diamond, Ky.
She worked at Otterbein Home in Lebanon for 16 years, before retiring in 1989.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Timothy L. Short; her parents, John and Evelyn (Trent) Johnson; two brothers, Lonnie and Frank Gayhart; and a sister, Martha Combs.
She is survived by a daughter, JoAnn Ashe, and her husband, Ed, of Germantown; a brother, Harold Gayhart, of Middletown; two sisters, Herma Gayhart and Mildred Collinsworth, both of Middletown; three grandchildren, Patricia Jones, Joey Jones, and his wife, Terina, and Robert Jones, and his wife, Michelle; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Burial will be at the Woodside Cemetery in Middletown.
Ruth E. Shumate
Former Middletown resident Ruth E. Schneider Shumate, 78, passed away Monday, June 8, 1998, in Alexandria, Va.
She was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Middletown. She was a member of Holy Family Parish and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and past national president of the National Federation of Grandmothers Clubs of America.
For 26 years, she worked as manager of the cardiology department at Middletown Regional Hospital. She retired in 1986.
She is survived by her husband, Edward M. Shumate of Alexandria, Va.; sons James (Susan) Schneider of Florence, Ky., and William (Nancy) Schneider and Frank (Julie) Schneider, both of Middletown; daughters Carolyn (Kenneth) Dearth Harrison and Mary Ann Couch, both of Middletown; stepsons Dr. Michael Shumate, Joseph (Sue) Shumate and Danny Shumate, all of Virginia; stepdaughters Mary Ann (Jeff) Anderson, Maureen Constanzo, Sheila Shumate and Kathleen (John) Ware, all of Virginia; brother Arthur Ditmyer of Fallsbrook, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Carrie Helmig Ditmyer, and sons Walter Schneider in 1987 and Arthur Schneider in 1995.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Chapel with the Revs. John Civille and David Fay officiating. Burial will be at Butler County Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home.

Helen F. Sibcy
Mrs. Helen F. Sibcy, 84, a resident of Garden Manor Extended Care Center, died Thursday morning, June 4, 1998, at Middletown Regional Hospital.
She was born in Cana, Texas, on Sept. 10, 1913, a daughter of Marion and Laura (Back) Borders. She was a longtime member of Franklin Christian Church.
Mrs. Sibcy is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Hacker of West Chester and Ramona (Bill) Sechrist of Franklin; a son, Wayne Sibcy of Germantown; six grandchildren, Randy (Shellie) Sechrist, Robert (Norma) Sechrist, Judy (Scott) Ashley, Rhonda S. (Ernie) Fox, David Reiff and Charles (Kim) Reiff; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Lou Sibcy of Middletown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Juler K. Sibcy, in 1977; a granddaughter, Rebecca Reiff; a grandson, William Sechrist Jr.; and a sister, Martha Borders.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home, with Brother Duane Mecklem officiating. Burial will be in Miltonville Cemetery.

Virgil Smallwood
Virgil Combs Smallwood, 86, of Preble County Line Road, Middletown, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at his residence.
He was born on July 10, 1911, in Frenchburg, Ky., to Joseph and Alice (Gose) Smallwood. He was a self-employed farmer and contractor.
Mr. Smallwood constructed many ponds and lakes in Preble County and the surrounding area. His work created enjoyment and recreation for many people. Wildlife and livestock operations flourished for many years from these sources of water.
He was a member of West Elkton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nellie; a daughter, Myrna Taylor, and her husband, Vince, of Middletown; a son, Dale Smallwood, and his wife, Betty, of Camden; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Opal Smallwood of Frenchburg, Ky.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, and 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home in Gratis, Ohio. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until the service at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Virginia S. Stachler
Mrs. Virginia L. Smithson Stachler, 79, of 4417 Poppy Drive, died Friday morning, June 28, at Mount Pleasant Retirement Village.
She was born in Frenchburg, Ky., Sept. 28, 1918, a daughter of Robert and Flora (Armitage) Hovermale, and had lived in Middletown since 1925. She worked for the Middletown City Schools for more than 30 years, retiring in 1977 as cafeteria supervisor. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ for more than 45 years.
She is survived by her husband, Leo G. Stachler; a daughter, Ginny Sue Becknell of Elgin, Ill.; two sons, Michael Wayne Smithson of Centerville and Dr. Robert Paul Smithson of Middletown; a sister, Susan Manifold of Monroe; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne Smithson; by her parents; and by a daughter, Mary Jane Smithson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home with the Rev. Susan Jones Thompson officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time. Burial will follow in Woodside Cemetery.
The family suggests contributions be made to the PAWS adoption center for animals.
Aaron Steinmetz
Aaron Henry Steinmetz, 89, of Sarasota, Fla., a former longtime Middletown resident, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Doctors Hospital in Sarasota.
He was born in Bellvue, Ky., on Aug. 26, 1908, the son of William and Elsa Steinmetz. He was raised in Middletown and lived here most of his life. He attended Middletown High School and the University of Cincinnati.
Mr. Steinmetz was formerly employed as an engineer in the aircraft division of General Electric Co. in Evendale. He enjoyed archery and was a past president of a local archery club. Mr. Steinmetz was also a past president of the Windword Isle Home Owners Association and a former member of the Elks Lodge. He belonged to St. John's United Methodist Church in Sarasota and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Middletown.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Vera; a daughter, Karen Hess, and her husband, Michael, of Middletown; a son, Nelson Steinmetz, and his wife, Sarah, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a stepson, Michael Von Seggern, and his wife, Carol, of Mentor, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Mary Boggs, and her husband, Lee, of Painesville, Ohio, and Luara Kidman of Florida; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandȘchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 47 years, Johanna; six brothers and sisters; and a great-granddaughter, Brittany Turner.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 3, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church on Broad Street in Middletown. Entombment will be at Woodside Cemetery Mausoleum. There will be visitation.

Helen Stutenroth
Former Middletown resident Mrs. Helen G. Stutenroth, 91, passed away Thursday, June 11, 1998, in Naples, Fla.
She moved to Naples, Fla., in 1971 from Middletown where she was a resident for 40 years. She graduated from the Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Dayton, Ohio, as a registered nurse.
Mrs. Stutenroth had been very active in church activities with the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Middletown. After moving to Florida, she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Naples and continued serving the church in many capacities.
She is survived by four children, Mary Lou Anderson of River Forest, Ill., Ruth Marie Hackney of Estero, Fla., Charles E. Stutenroth III of Knoxville, Tenn., and Susan Johnson of North Barrington, Ill. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles E. Stutenroth II.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 15, at the First Presbyterian Church of Naples, 250 Sixth St. South, Naples, Fla. The Rev. Dr. Russell E. Mase will officiate.
