Katie A. Brubaker
WEST ALEXANDRIA-Mrs. Katie Ann Brubaker, 46, of Enterprise Road, near Gratis, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at her residence. She was born in Chardon, Ohio, on Feb. 19, 1953, to Daniel and Emma (Miller) Beachey. She was a member of the Christian Assembly of God Church in Middletown, Ohio. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Tom Brubaker, two sons, Anthony and Daniel Brubaker and two daughters, Alisa and Sheldnah Brubaker, all at home; three brothers, Josiah Beachey of Linn Grove, Ind., Henry Beachey of Geneva, Ind., and William Beachey of Berne, ind.; and three sisters, Ella Yoder of Berne, Lydia Royer of Eaton, Ohio, and Fannie Miller of Salem, Ind. Mrs. Brubaker was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Johnny Beachey in 1942 and Jacob Beachey in 1952; and a sister-in-law, Arvilla Beachey in 1997.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the Christian Assembly of God at 6830 Trenton-Franklin Road outside of Middletown, with the Rev. Don F. Dohm officiating. Burial will be in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria, Ohio. Friends may call at the Brubaker residence on Enterprise Road on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Friday.

John C. Calhoun
GERMANTOWN-John C. Calhoun, 80, of Germantown, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at the Otterbein-Lebanon Retirement Community. He was born on Jan. 14, 1919, to the late Luther and Maude M. (Williams) Calhoun. He was a World War II Air Force veteran and a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Carlisle. Mr. Calhoun worked at the Huber Hardware Store from 1943 until 1983 when he then owned and managed the store until 1995. He was preceded in death by a sister, Leah Webb, and a brother, Rev. David Calhoun. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kande J. and John Burkhardt of Germantown; two grandchildren, Rachel and Jonathan Burkhardt, both of Germantown; his dear friend, Luella Calhoun of Germantown; two sisters, Elizabeth Tacke and Lois Calhoun, both of Aberdeen, Ohio; and a brother, Rev. Thomas Calhoun of Winston Salem, N.C.
ARRANGEMENTS: Friends may call Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Dalton Funeral home, corner of Ohio 4 and Weaver Road in Germantown. Vicki Carpenter
Vicki Carpenter, 50, of Germantown, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 1999. She was a member of the Germantown Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2292. Vicki was preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn Grimes in 1984. Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Billy K. Carpenter; her daughter, Christina Carpenter, of Middletown; two sons, Jackie Lambert and Robert Carpenter, both of Germantown; three granddaughters, Tracy Smith and Samantha Gingerich, both of Middletown, and Tasha Lambert of Germantown; her mother-in-law, Winifred Carpenter; and brother-in-law, Marshall Carpenter, both of Germantown; and numerous friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: Friends may call Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Dalton Funeral Home, the corner of Ohio 4 and Weaver Road, Germantown, where the funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m., with Pastor Bob Reed officiating. Burial is at Woodhill Cemetery, Franklin.

Maudie Carroll
Mrs. Maudie Carroll, 93, of Middletown, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Willow Knoll Retirement Community. She was born in Wolfe County, Ky., on July 1, 1906 and lived in this area most of her life. Before her retirement, Mrs. Carroll had worked as a laborer at the old Polar Bear Tobacco Co. She was a member of the Heavenly Highway Tabernacle. Survivors include a son, Charles Edward Carroll of Middletown; three daughters, Delores Manning, Betty Mullins and Catherine Louise Carroll, all of Middletown; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; one great- great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Stella Malicot of Dayton, Ohio, and Gladys Esposito of California; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Buckner Carroll in1967; a son-in-law, Lexie Elkins Manning in 1969; a son, William T. Carroll, and his wife Patricia; a son-in-law, Rader Mullins in 1999; and two sisters, Lillie and Rosie.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Joseph Baker-Stevens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Wilson officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Nila Carruthers
Mrs. Nila (Ambler) Carruthers, 90, of Los Angeles, Calif., and a former longtime resident of Middletown, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, in Los Angeles of heart and kidney failure. She had a fall about two months ago and did not fully recover. She was born in Macy, Ind., in 1909, to Charles and Goldie (See) Ambler. In her younger days, she was active in Girl Scouts, Y-Teens, the Presbyterian Church's Bible School, Head Start Programs and crafts for the church bazaars. She had also served as a deaconess for her church. She loved music and travel and was an artist and an active painter all of her life, inspiring two following generations of artists, painters and musicians. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was lively, free-spirited and a unique individual. She was active until her fall, taking long daily walks. She took pleasure in her new great-granddaughter, the flower garden and going for lunch with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Many loved her and will miss her presence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Goldie Ambler. She was the devoted wife of Sam (Maurice E.) Carruthers, director of special metals at Armco Steel Co., who passed away in September, 1983. Her son, Peter A. Carruthers, who was a prominent University of Arizona physics professor, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Carruthers is survived by a daughter, Sally Carruthers Hooper of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren, Peter Carruthers of Ithica, N.Y., Debra Carruthers of Espanola, N.M., Katheryn Carruthers Daniels of Norfolk, Va., Cynthia Hooper of Eureka Calif., and Amy Hooper Deogard of Los Angeles; and four great-grandchildren, Michael Carruthers, Colelman Dean Hooper-Weidle, Valerie Ann Deogard and Eva Daniels; a sister, Mary Shipley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a brother, James Ambler of Sevierville, Tenn.

Richard T. Cottle
Richard T. Cottle, 39, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Carlisle and Pitsburg, Ohio, died suddenly, Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at his Las Vegas residence. He was born in Middletown, Ohio, on Jan. 25, 1960, the son of Richard M. Cottle and June (Ramey) Clark. He worked for the Circus-Circus Motel/Casino in Las Vegas. Mr. Cottle had served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Southern Baptist Church. Survivors include his parents, June and Walter Clark of Lewisburg, Ohio, and Richard M. and Barbara Cottle of North Fort Myers, Fla.; three children, Helen Cottle of Columbus, Ohio, and Ryan Tracy Cottle and Chad Cottle, both of Kentucy; a sister, Toni Lynn Long of Pitsburg, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Lois Pennwell of Miamisburg; two stepbrothers, Walter Clark Jr. of Germantown and Mike Wall of Rock Hill, S.C.; two stepsisters, Sheila Weidel of West Carrollton and Pam Withrow of Carlisle; an aunt, Freda Ferrell of Middletown; uncles, Jack Ramey of Miamisburg and James Kirby Ramey of Waynesville.

Geneva H. Craft
Mrs. Geneva H. Craft, 91, of Middletown, passedaway Tuesday Oct. 5, 1999, atMount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was born on Nov. 9, 1907, in New Market, Ohio, and had lived in this area for most of her life. Mrs. Craft had worked as a cook in Duffs Restaurant for 25 years. Her husband, Arvin Craft, died in 1978. Survivors include a daughter, JoAn Paugh, and her husband, Ronald, of Pickerington, Ohio; five grandchildren, Bobby Eugene Juillerat of Elyria, Ohio, Connie Bowman, and husband, Ronald, of Fairfield, Donnie Kelly, and wife, Pam, of Gilmer, Texas, Kathy Harding, and husband, Stan, of Columbus, and Tracy Uhrig, and husband, Gary, of Pickerington, Ohio; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

David D. Crawford
David D. Crawford, 47, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Middletown, departed this life unexpectedly on Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at his residence. He was a native of Middletown, Ohio, and had attended Middletown public schools. He was preceded in death by his father, William Boyd Duncun and paternal grandparents, William and Mary Crawford. He leaves to mourn his devoted mother, Joanne Crawford-Thurmond of Dayton; stepfather, Herbert Thurmond of Georgia; sisters, Mary Ann Thurmond-Edwards, Jane Thurmond of Dayton and Regina Crum of Atlanta, Ga.; and a host of other family members and friends, including a very special cousin, Billy Crawford of Cleveland, Ohio.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at McLin Funeral Chapel of Northern Hills, 2801 N. Kenneth Dalton
Kenneth "Kent" William Dalton, 33, of 6017 Eighth Ave., Chautauqua, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999 at his residence. He was born in Dayton on June 28, 1966, the son of Ernest Courtney and Judith Rayburn Dalton. He was a member of the New Jersey Presbyterian Church and taught the Youth Club, volunteered for Hospice, Suicide Prevention, and was a Stephen Minister at Bethany Lutheran Village. Surviving are his wife of four years, Kate Waldsmith; his parents, Ernest and Judith Dalton of Chautauqua; two bothers, Brian and wife, Beth Dalton; their two children, Lucy and Anna of Dayton, Matthew Christopher Dalton of Morgantown, W. Va.; sister-in-law, Michelle Ferrell and her three children, Elizabeth, Courtney and Bryce of Chautauqua; grandparents, Harry and Eileen Schneble of Bethany Lutheran Village.

Mary Duncan
LEBANON – Mrs. Mary M. (Weaver) Duncan, 77, of Lebanon, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999. She was born on April 21, 1922, in Frazier, Ky., to Rufus and Neva (Gillespie) Weaver. She was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Duncan was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Loveland. She was active with many groups, including the Missionary Society, the Usher Board, and her neighborhood quilting club. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Peggy Jo Harrell; a son, Paul T. Duncan; and three brothers, Rufus, Paul and William Weaver. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John H. Duncan II of Lebanon; one son, John H. Duncan III of Huntsville, Ala.; six daughters and sons-in-law, Ramona J. and Kevin Strickland of Lebanon, Katherine M. and Gene Snow of Middletown, Mary Delois and Michael McNeil of Lebanon, Linda S. and Lawrence Hamilton Jr. of Piqua, Paulette S. and Gordon Hamilton of Lebanon and Norma J, Duncan of Lebanon; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl Mason and Mary Weaver of Somerset, Ky., James Parker and Anna Weaver of Lexington, Ky.,, and John Thomas and Helen Weaver of Dayton; 20 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Vera Francis
GRATIS-Mrs. Vera Francis, 70, formerly of 109 Thomas St., passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Hospice of Dayton. She was born in Perry County, Ky., on Jan. 16, 1929, the daughter of Lige and Geneva (Cole) Vance. She was a member of the Miamisburg Full Gospel Tabernacle. Preceding her in death were her parents, and her husband, Elmer Lacy Francis, in February, 1982. Surviving are four sons and their wives, Garry and Betty Francis of Kettering, Ronnie and Beverly Francis of Miamisburg, Calvin and Lana Francis of Miamisburg and Elmer Lacy Jr., and his wife, Vicki, of Franklin; three daughters and their husbands, Linda and Harold Holbrook of Dayton, Brenda and Frank Holbrook of Franklin and Peggy and Merl Adkins of Gratis; two brothers, Rex Vance of West Liberty, Ky., and Forest Vance of Germantown, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Lewis of West Liberty, Ky., and Sandy Reed of Morehead, Ky.; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Charlotte L. Gross
Mrs. Charlotte L. Gross, 60, of Middletown, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in Dayton, Ohio. She was born on Sept. 2, 1939, in Morgan County, Ky., and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. Gross was employed as a registered nurse at Garden Manor Extended Care Center for 16 years before retiring in 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Gross on Jan. 28, 1992; her father, Ivan Jarrell; and her mother, Lydia Trimble. Among her survivors are two sons, Craig Gross and Kevin Gross of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Melissa Johnson, and her husband, David, of Middletown; a sister, Charlene Parker of Austin, Texas; two nephews; an aunt, Ilene Southward of Middletown; and an uncle, Harry Weidle of Middletown.

Charles M. Hayes Jr.
Charles Marion Hayes Jr., 90, a resident of Garden Manor Retirement Community, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999. He was born in Middletown on Oct. 19, 1908, a son of Charles and Margaret (Shafer) Hayes. He was a World War II Army veteran. He married Ruth Eggleston on Oct. 26, 1951, and they made their home at 1815 Dix Road. Mr. Hayes was an Armco employee for more than 30 years, retiring as supervisor of scrap preparation. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; nieces and nephews, including Mildred and Max Sommers, Jim Phillabaum and Donna Eisele; and cousins, including Tim Chalfin.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home, with Pastor J. William Pearch officiating. Burial will follow in Woodside Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.

C. Marie Johnson
Mrs. C. Marie Johnson, 80, of Somerville, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at her residence. She was born in Middletown on May 25, 1919, the daughter of Joseph and Hazel Marie Ernst and lived most of her life in this area. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of the Stratford Heights Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter M. Johnson in 1990; a son, Linville H. Johnson; and her parents. Surviving are two sons, Walter E. Johnson of Germantown and Roger M. Johnson of Frenchburg, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

Ross Kirk
GERMANTOWN-Ross Kirk, 63, of Germantown, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Sycamore Hospital in Miamisburg. Mr. Kirk was a former employee of Ohio Dayton Sash & Doors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Alice Kirk. Among his survivors are his wife, Betty J.; four sons, Ross Kirk Jr., and his wife, Rachel, and Chris, Kelly and Steve Kirk, all of Germantown; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy K. and Don Cox of Dayton; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Jenny Kirk of Wilmington, Ohio; three sisters, Kathy Thompson of West Carrollton, Ruby Bolden of Nito, Texas, and Mary Titer, and husband, Jim, of Springfield, Ohio; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Penny Ledford
Penny Ledford, 36, of 2900 Greentree Road, Lebanon, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at Miami Valley Hospital. She was employed by the Franklin City Schools, teaching at Gerke Elementary School. She was a graduate of Franklin High School and Miami University. She is survived by her husband, Mitchell; twins Cooper Charles and Hanna Eliza, both at home; parents James and Audrey (Dot) Robinson, of Franklin; a brother, James C. (Kim) Robinson, of Middletown; and grandparents Granville and Malvena Robinson of Middletown.

Shawn J. Mabry
GERMANTOWN – Shawn J. Mabry, 41, of Germantown, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 4, 1999. S hawn was born on July 11, 1958, to James M. and Barbara N. (Ellis) Mabry. He was a 1976 graduate of Valley View High School and worked as a program analyst for Dayton Superior Corp. in Miamisburg. He was a member of the Valley View Booster Club and a huge Valley View Spartan fan. He also wrote contributing articles for the sports section of the former Germantown-Farmersville Gazette Newspaper and was currently writing for the Vvonline.com. Besides his parents, he is also survived by a daughter, Lindsey Mabry of Farmersville; a sister, Rebecca Hill; three nieces, Tish, Erica and Carly Hill, all of Germantown; two special uncle/brothers, Gale T. (Lora and sons) Mabry of West Carrollton; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Nora E. Madden
Nora Elizabeth Madden, 79, of 1000 Ellen Drive, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at Middletown Regional Hospital. Born in Hazel Green, Ky., on Aug. 29, 1920, Mrs. Madden lived in Middletown for almost her entire life. She worked for a variety of employers, including Raymond Bag and Inland Container. Mrs. Madden was a member of the Berachah Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Cy" Silas Madden in 1997; her parents, Thomas Keith and Elizabeth (Keith) Wootan; five brothers, Bob, Fred, Jim, Courtney and Cap Keith and a sister, Edna Hall. She is survived by a son, Charles (Alice) Madden of Irving, Texas; a daughter, Cecelia Kendall of Middletown; three grandchildren, April Theiman of Somerville, Elizabeth Robinson of Middletown and Howard H. Kendall III of Las Vegas; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, India Stacy and Phyllis and Patricia Kidd, all of Middletown, and May Day, of Trenton; and a brother, Jim Keith of Middletown.

Mary L. Margerum
After a lengthy illness at home, Mrs. Mary L. Margerum, age 88, quietly passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Twin Cities Hospital in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Though she was a native of Middletown, Ohio, Mary, and her husband, Howard, moved to Fort Walton Beach, Fla. in 1970 from Bradenton, Fla. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John Weller Busseer and Lillian Brown Busseer; her beloved husband of 49 years, Howard S. Margerum; and four sisters, Dorothy McCain, Ruth Busseer, Ethel Reese and Helen Keller. Mary maintained an active life prior to her illness. She was a contributing member to the Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the first Disciple Class, a teacher of the Fellowship Class, and a former president of the Young at Heart. She is survived by her four children, Lois M. Stockmon of Springboro, Ohio, Howard D. Margerum of Indian Springs, Ohio, Janice L. Riggenbach of Shalimar, Fla., and John F. Margerum of Middletown; and a sister, Martha Hess of Middletown. Mary was also the proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Mary will be greatly missed by all who loved her enthusiasm for life and her candid and forthright opinions.

Arlene Marker, 71 of Eaton, died Friday, Oct., 1, 1999 at Grandview Hospital in Dayton. She was born Nov. 22, 1927 in Dayton to the late Ford P. and Anna (Chippendale) Ogden. She had been a former employee of the Eaton Place and St. Clair Inn. A graduate of Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard O. Marker on Nov. 21, 1987; two brothers, Ford P. Ogden Jr. and James P. Ogden. She is survived by daughter, Carolyn Hofacker of Eaton; sons, Robert L. Marker of Eaton and David R. Marker of Waynesville, N.C.; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Irene Wilson Peck
Mrs. Irene Wilson Peck, 7, of Middletown, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at her residence. She was born on Nov. 30, 1921, in Germantown, Ohio, and was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a homemaker. She leaves two sons, Roy Wilson of Middletown and Troy Wilson, and his wife Sandy, of Middletown, and a sister, Maxine Medl. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Wilson; and her parents, Stanley and Minnie (Gibbs) Gibson.

Hazle M. Phillips
Hazle M. Phillips, 66, of Bellevue, Ohio died Saturday at her home on 500 Derby Lane. She was born Feb. 20, 1933, the daughter of Leonard McClellan and Bessie Edwards. She worked for the former New Departure (now Delphi Chassis) in Sandusky and was a member of the Providence Baptist Church and the UAW Local 913. She is survived by her sons, Sanford Phillips of Zachary, La., Jerry Phillips of Franklin and Frank Phillips of Bellevue; daughters, Lori Abdelghani of Franklin and Pamela L. Atieh of Columbus; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Phillips, whom she married Sept. 28, 1955; her parents; brothers, Marvin, Worley, Gus, Jim and Avery; sisters, Blanche Lessick, Olean Meade, and Annabelle McClellan.

Mary Phillips
Mrs. Mary L. Phillips, 90, of Monroe, passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Mount Pleasant Village. She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on Feb. 22, 1909, the daughter of Jesse Raymond Tindall and Mary Anna (Dietz) Tindall. She retired in 1970 as a cashier with Middletown Schools after 17 years of service. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1942 and a member of the Womens Century Club and the F.T.T.F. Literary Club. She loved to play bridge. Surviving are three daughters, Virginia Bauman of Mount Dora, Fla., Jean (Robert) Barr of Orlando, Fla., and Ruth Ellen (Richard) Bock of Cumming, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Linda McAllister, Bruce Bauman, Barbara Grigg, Robert D. Barr, Nancy Shantz and Beth and Thomas Bock; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry T. Phillips in 1972; her parents, Jesse Raymond and Mary Anna Tindall; her brothers, Lt. Col. Robert F. Tindall in 1963 and J. Raymond Tindall Jr. ; and a son-in-law, Clement Bauman.

James N. Smith
CARLISLE-James N. Smith, 62, of of 607 Central Ave., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on Nov. 4, 1936, the son of Nathan and Mary M. (McCoy) Smith. He was a 1954 graduate of Carlisle High School and attended Western Kentucky State College in Bowling Green, Ky., graduating in 1959. He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army for two years. Mr. Smith was employed by General Motors Harrison Division for 30 years. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and was active in the church golf league and choir. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary M. Smith. Surviving are his wife, Sandra (Williams) Smith; two sons, Brian Smith of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Bradley Smith of Middletown; his father, Nathan Smith of Franklin; three stepsons, Paul Green, and his wife, Jeanie, of Ocilla, Ga., Mark Green, and wife, Missy, of Middletown, and Rev. Joan Stowe
Joan (Woosley) Stowe, 52, of Delaware, Ohio, died unexpectedly after a sudden illness on Saturday, Oct., 2, 1999, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus. She was born on Nov.11, 1946, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of John "Jack" D. Woosley (deceased) and Elizabeth "Liz" (Pitsinger) Woosley. Mrs. Stowe is survived by her husband of 33 years, Donald J.; two sons, Scott J. of Middletown and Jesse R. of Delaware, Ohio; her mother, Liz Woosley of Camden; and her sister, Jackie (Jeff) Deaton of Germantown. She also leaves behind a host of loving friends and relatives. Joan was a graduate of Shawnee High School in Camden, Ohio, and attended the Butler-Hamilton Business College in Hamilton. She was employed by the American Cancer Society from 1981 until the time of her death in a variety of increasingly responsible positions. She had also held positions with the Greenville (Ohio) City Auditor’s Office, Carr & Bushy, CPA (also in Greenville), and the Universal Manufacturing Corp. in Camden. She had served as a member of the Preble Shawnee School Board and the Camden Area Chamber of Commerce, chaired the Preble Shawnee Citizens Advisory Committee, co-chaired the Black Walnut Festival in Camden; and served as president of the Darke County Association for Retarded Citizens. Mrs. Stowe was a tireless advocate for disabled citizens, serving as a volunteer in many capacities with the Abilities First Foundation (Doty House). She was recognized for her leadership efforts in this area being named "Mother of the Year" by Ohio Governor James Rhodes.

Raymond H. Sturgis
CARLISLE-Raymond Hanson Sturgis Sr., 73, of 740 Hillcrest, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Carlisle Manor. He was born in Carlisle, Ohio, on April 4, 1926, the son of William H. and Elizabeth (Bennett) Sturgis. He was a 1944 graduate of Franklin High School and a 1957 charter member and past president of the Carlisle Lions Club. Mr. Sturgis was a member of the First United Church of Christ of Franklin. He served as a past Carlisle City Council member and was a grand parade marshall this year. He was employed by Armco Steel Co. for 40 years as a maintenance rep, retiring in 1988. Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Harry and William Sturgis and an infant brother. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Barbara (Schmidt) Sturgis; three sons, Raymond Sturgis Jr. and Jerry Sturgis, both of Carlisle and John Sturgis of Clarksville, Ohio; two daughters, Linda Kay Neff of Carlisle and Kathy Taulbee of Englewood, Calif.; a sister, Mary Cummings of Franklin; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lucas O. Swift
FRANKLIN - Lucas O. Swift, 78, of 6673 Linwood Drive, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Dayton Veterans Hospital. He was born in Jackson, Tenn., on May 25, 1921, the son of Wallace and Samantha (Maberry) Swift. He was employed by Union Local 18 in Dayton as a heavy equipment operator. Mr. Swift was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Middletown and the International Operators Union. His parents preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Irene (Combs) Swift; three sons, Patrick Michael Swift of Akron, Wallace James Swift of West Virginia and Nathan Allen Swift; three daughters, Sharon Rae Nollner of Fairborn, Marie Elizabeth Copley of West Virginia and Bonnie Dean Combs of Dayton; a sister, Wilma Lykins of Fairborn; four stepchildren, Corbett Caudill of Franklin, Toma Stukuls of Marietta, Yevetta Martin Laws of Burnsville, Minn., and Juda Ellen Edwards of Monroe, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Carl W. Tibbs
Carl W. Tibbs, 79, or 4710 Roosevelt Ave., died Monday morning, Oct. 4, 1999, at this residence. He was born in Lexington, Ky., on March 21, 1920, a son of Robert C. and Rhonda (Hamlin) Tibbs. Mr. Tibbs worked for more than 35 years at Crystal Tissue Co., in the material handling department. He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. In his younger days, he was a widely known softball player, known as "Slugger." Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Mildred Eileen Tibbs; a daughter, Judy Wilson (husband, Russell) of Miamisburg; a son, Carl Wayne Tibs (wife, Carol) of Lebanon; four grandchildren, Carla Kline (husband, Jim) of Ada, Ohio, Cary Tibbs of Felicity, Ohio, Scott Wilson of Germantown and Todd Wilson of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; six great-grandchildren, Brooke Sicking, Cary Blake Tibbs, Trevor Kline, Christopher Wilson, Kristen Fitterer and Brandon Wilson; and two brothers, Raymond Tibbs of Fairborn and Arliss Lee Tibbs of Monroe. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jeanette Barnett, Juanita Weaver and Estelene Tibbs in infancy; and by his parents.

Maude I. Tusing
Mrs. Maude Irene Tusing, 95, of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Clyde, Ohio, on Aug. 9, 1904, and lived in the Middletown area for 75 years. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Tusing attended University Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lanie A. Tusing in 1969; her parents, George and Blanche Parker; a son, Lanie B. in 1995; a daughter, Lela Mae in 1929; a son-in-law, Jack Blanton in 1995; a brother, Carl Parker; and a sister, Ruth Parker. She leaves two sons and their wives, Thomas and Joan Tusing of Trenton and Clarence and Madeline Tusing of Middletown; a daughter-in-law, Georgia Tusing of Trenton; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Velma Tusing of Middletown and Ada Rathbun of Green Springs, Ohio; and a dear friend, Mary Back of Middletown.

Robert R. Walton, Sr.
Robert R. Walton, Sr., 74, of 4241 Mallard Court, died Sunday evening, Oct. 3, 1999, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born in Middletown and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1942. He then enlisted in the Army in March 1943, and served until February 1946. Mr. Walton was appointed to the Middletown Police Department in 1950 and served for 26 years, retiring as a captain in March 1976. He then was appointed as county sheriff to fill an unexpired term and served as sheriff until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1988. He had also worked for more than 12 years as a cost accountant for the McGraw Construction Company. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, a member of the Jefferson Lodge, the Eastern Star and the Valley of Dayton Scottish Rite. He also belonged to the American Legion and to St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bette (Riddell) Walton; two sons, Robert R. Walton, Jr. (wife, Connie) and Charles Walton (wife, Carol) both of Middletown; seven grandchildren, Robert Walton III (wife, Lisa), Eric Walton (wife, Kathy), Kimberly Campbell (husband, Todd), Melissa Ware (husband, Craig) and Gail, Dee and Danny Lucas; six great-grandchildren, Alex and Lyndon Walton, Jordan Campbell, Alyssa and Jacob Walton and Aaron Lucas; his aunt, Anna Green; and numerous cousins, including Dick and Mary Lou Green. He also enjoyed a wide circle of friends and co-workers will mourn his passing.

John Wells
John Wells, 83, of Middletown, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Hawthorn Glen Nursing Center. The native of Baptist, Ky., was born on Dec. 11, 1915, and had lived here since 1946. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Wells retired from Armco in 1978. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Carrie Wells; three brothers, Emerson Wells, Bill Jeff Wells and Pershing Wells; and a sister, Golden Allen. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ruby; two daughters and their husbands Sally and Jon Christensen of San Diego, Calif., and Rita and Bob Pierce of Monroe; four grandchildren, Cynthia D'Ambrosio, and her husband, Jay, Michael and John Pierce and Eric Christensen; a brother, R.C. Wells, and wife, Libby; three sisters, Zuda Marker, and husband, Bob, Rosalyn Alcorn, and husband, Bill, and Elizabeth Hurst; and many nieces and nephews.

Willard G. Wilson
Willard Glen Wilson, 68, of Middletown, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Mount Pleasant Retirement Village in Monroe. He was born in West Liberty, Ky., on Feb. 22, 1931, to the late Ollie and Bernice Wilson and lived in this area for 63 years. Mr. Wilson retired in 1993 from his job as a pressman at American Packaging where he had worked for 44 years. He was a member of the Heavenly Highway Tabernacle. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eleanor Wilson; two daughters, Tracy Easter, and her husband, Albert, of Brodhead, Ky., and Sarah Beth Wilson of Middletown; a grandson, Roy Crowley Jr. of Middletown; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Caleb Crowley; a sister, Roberta Sparks of Middletown; his stepmother, Clarisa Wilson of Middletown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Monnie Woodall, 77, of Middletown, died Saturday, Oct. 2 at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born Feb. 8, 1922 in Crandon, Wis. She retired in 1981 after 26 years of service as a press operator at the St. Regis Paper Co. in Middletown, and was a member of the Uniformed Services of Poasttown. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Douglas J. Woodall of Middletown; stepsons, Mike (Donna) Woodall of Orlando, Fla., and Craig Woodall of Union, Ky.; stepdaughters, Marsha (Tim) Maloney of Franklin and Cathy Neu of Bloomington, Ind.; brothers, Russell McPherson of Seymour, Wis.., and Lester McPherson of Green Bay, Wis.; sister, Lou Riemer of New Berlin, Wis., and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Kelly McPherson; mother, Bertha McPherson; and a brother, Robert McPherson.
