Melanie A. Meeks
Melanie Anne Meeks, 41, of Chardon, died Aug. 1 2003 at her home. Born March 16, 1962, in East Cleveland, she was a 1981 graduate of Mentor High School. She married Norman Meeks on Aug. 15, 1987. A full-time mother and wife, she was a member of Mentor Church of Christ and attended Morning Star Church of Christ. Mrs. Meeks is survived by her husband; children, Elena and Joshua; stepdaughter, Christina O'Brien; father, Ira Simpson, of Mentor; brothers, Robert Paul (Mickey) Simpson, of Chardon, Kelly R. (Rhondi) Simpson, of Mentor, and Jason C., of Mentor; sister, Sherry Yates, of Mentor; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marion. Funeral services were held Aug. 5 and burial was in North Chardon Cemetery.

James M. Ramsden
James M. Ramsden, 54, of Streetsboro and formerly of Solon, died July 29 2003 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Jan. 15, 1949, in Toledo, he received a B.A. in English literature from the University of Toledo and was a U.S. Army veteran. Employed as a station manager for the last five years for Clark Oil Co. in Northfield, he enjoyed reading, history, art and the horse track. Mr. Ramsden is survived by his wife, Grace (nee Moore); children, James and Pearl Ramsden, of Toledo; stepsons, Anthony (Teva), of Marion, and Steven (Jennifer) Bourbonnais, of Sagamore Hills; stepdaughter, Sandra (Greg) Gillaspie, of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, Michael (Nancy), of Blissville, Mich., and Ralph (Nancy) Ramsden, of Abington, Va.; and three grandchildren. Donald C. Roberson
Donald C. Roberson, 85, of Naples, Fla., and formerly of Solon, died July 23 2003 at Otterbein Nursing Home in Cridersville. Born April 8, 1918, to Harvey C. and Alice (nee Griner) Roberson, he was a graduate of Lima Central High School. Mr. Roberson received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Ohio Northern University in 1940, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. A veteran of World War II, he served in the 37th Division of the U.S. Army. On Jan. 20, 1941, he married Mary Best, of Columbus Grove. She preceded him following 60 years of marriage. Mr. Roberson was an administrative manager of research and development for the Standard Oil Co. of Ohio. He retired in 1982 after 43 years of service. Active in the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Beachwood and a member of Kiwanis, he served on the Warrensville Heights School Board from 1949 to 1957, prior to moving to Solon. Following retirement to Naples, Fla., he and his wife were elders in the Moorings Presbyterian Church. An avid golfer, he played often at the Country Club of Naples and methodically dabbled in the stock market. Mr. Roberson is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Walter M. III) Lawson, of Lima; six grandchildren; and son-in-law, Douglas Wilson, of Francesville, Ind. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan K. Wilson, and son, Donald C. Roberson II. Memorial contributions may be made to the Young Women's Christian Association, 649 W. Market St., Lima.

Patricia B. Szabo
Patricia B. Szabo, 83, of Largo, Fla., and formerly of Chardon, died July 30 2003 at Mease Hospital in Dunedin, Fla. Born Aug. 4, 1919, in Cleveland, the daughter of Richard and Pauline Hybil, she wintered in Florida since 1975. A former member of Church of St. Mary in Chardon, she was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Largo and Pine Ridge Country Club in Willoughby. Mrs. Szabo is survived by her sons, Dr. Stephen J. Szabo Jr., of Tampa, Fla., Bruce M., of Clearwater, Fla., Gregory J., of Dallas, and Barry K., of Chardon; daughters, Patricia S. Hauser, of Monument, Colo., and Pamela L. Szabo Adams, of Midland, Mich.; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass was held Aug. 6 at Church of St. Mary in Chardon, and burial was in All Souls Cemetery.

Leonard Walker
Leonard Walker, 49, of Grosse Isle, Mich., and formerly of Auburn, died July 25 2003 at South Shore Medical Hospital in Michigan. Mr. Walker was a financial planner for Ford Motor Co. He is survived by his wife, Laurie (nee Stone); sons, Robert and David; parents, Leonard R. and Verna Walker; siblings, Connie (Michael) Shiever, Janet (Rick) Kinser, Patty Ullom-Walker, Gerri (Louis) DiCarro and Debbie (Chuck) Petraska; in-laws, Dr. Sidney J. and Joan Stone; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert. Funeral services were held July 30 at Hope Community Church in Hudson, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Solon. Peggy L. Weber
Peggy Louise Weber, 54, a lifelong Chardon area resident, died July 31 2003 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. Born Dec. 17, 1948, in Painesville, she was an office manager for Poklar Power in Euclid. A member of the Geauga County Historical Society, she attended Chardon Christian Fellowship and enjoyed art, antiques and archaeology. Mrs. Weber is survived by her son, Joshua Howard Weber, of Chardon; daughter, Olivia Louise Weber, of Chardon; brothers, Kenneth (Sara), of Colebrook Township, Don (Marge), of Huntsburg, and Gary (Dorothy) Baker, of Rock Creek; sister, Judy (Charles) Nungesser, of Eastlake; and grandchildren, Alex F. Rivera and Aiden J. Weber. She was preceded in death by her parents, C.W. and Ruth (nee Nicholson) Baker. Funeral services were held at Chardon Christian Fellowship, and burial was in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester. Irene E. Zaboly
Irene Elizabeth Zaboly, 89, of South Russell, died July 4 2003. Survivors include her son, Bela A. Zaboly, of Cleveland; daughters, Irene Z. Church, of South Russell, and Marianne Z. Dodds, of Willoughby; granddaughters, Irene E., of Aurora, and Elizabeth A. Church, of, Bainbridge, Lauren A. Gadd, of South Russell, and Stacey J. Dodds, of Willoughby; and grandson, John D. Dalene M. Zinkan
Dalene Marie Zinkan (nee Pietro), 62, of Hudson and formerly of Chagrin Falls, died Aug. 3 2003 at her home in Hudson. Born in Indianapolis to Anthony and Rosemary (nee McCauslin) Pietro, she was a graduate of Scecina Memorial High School in Indianapolis. An avid golfer and member of Tanglewood Country Club in Bainbridge and Lexington Country Club in Fort Meyers, Fla., she was one of the founding members of the "Tee Top" golf league at Parkview Country Club in Lyndhurst. She loved to spot and identify birds throughout North America. An active member at St. Joan of Arc Church in Chagrin Falls for the past 30 years, she was a parishioner at St. Mary's Church in Hudson. Mrs. Zinkan is survived by her husband, K. James Zinkan; children, Brian J. (Sandy), of Twinsburg, Suzanne C. (James), of Sagamore Hills, and Nancy (Thomas) Hogan, of Mason; grandchildren, Alex and Christopher Zinkan, Alyssa and Lindsay D. Carter and Nicholas and Grace Hogan; brother, Michael (Mary Sue) Pietro, of Indianapolis; niece, Maria Pietro; and nephew, Anthony Pietro. Sandy Bartter
Sandy Bartter, 62, of Chagrin Falls, died March 25 2004 at her home of liver cancer. Born Dec. 4, 1941, in Glen Ellyn, Ill., she received a degree in elementary education from Illinois State University. Previously an elementary school teacher, she was the co-owner of Village Nursery School. A member of the Western Reserve Women's Republican Club, Women's Fellowship at Federated Church, PEO, DAR and Chagrin Falls Historical Society, she enjoyed traveling, antique shopping, baseball and entertaining. Mrs. Bartter is survived by her husband, Bruce; daughter, Amy Bartter, of Lyndhurst; son, John (Lola) Bartter, of London, England; and sister, Joanne Clauss, of Cissna Park, Ill. Katherine M. Carl
Katherine M. Carl, 25, of Columbus and formerly of Mansfield, died March 29 2004 from a fire that engulfed the apartment complex where she resided. A graduate of Mansfield Senior High School and Ohio University, she was a case manager and social worker with Columbus Area Inc. for the past year. She helped clients with daily services and mental issues. Ms. Carl is survived by her parents, Marilyn (nee Miller) and the Rev. Phillip Carl, of Solon; brother, Matthew D., of Denver; friend, Ethan Fleck; uncle and aunts, William and Sally Miller and Kay Carl; and cousins, William Jack and Steven Miller. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Howard and Helen Miller and Paul and Velma Carl. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. April 2 at Advent Lutheran Church, 5525 Harper Road in Solon, where Ms. Carl's father is the pastor. Bishop Marcus Miller will preside. Burial will take place at Mansfield Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. April 2. A reception for family and friends will follow at First Lutheran Church in Mansfield. Phebe L. Dunlavey
Services for Phebe Lydia Dunlavey, infant daughter of Michael and Nicole (nee Porche) Dunlavey, of Newbury, were held March 27 2004 at Bethesda Baptist Church in Bedford. Born March 15, she died March 22 surrounded by her family. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her siblings, Jordan, Alixandrea and Joseph; maternal grandmother, Lydia (George) Scholz, of Mentor-on-the-Lake; maternal grandfather, Daryl (Colleen) Porche, of Mentor, paternal grandparents, Paul and Diann Dunlavey, of Russell; great-grandparents, Glenn and Rita Porche, of Euclid, and Harold and Joyce Norsic, of Perry; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Private burial was in Munn Cemetery in Newbury.

Marilyn T. Flynn
Marilyn Theresa Flynn, 59, of Chardon, died March 28 2004. A graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Nursing, she was a nurse at Hillcrest Hospital for 30 years. She loved training and showing collies. Ms. Flynn is survived by her mother, Theresa Flynn, of New York; and brother, Thomas, of Colorado. Funeral Mass was celebrated April 1 at Church of St. Mary in Chardon.

Earl J. Hall Sr.
Earl J. Hall Sr., 66, of Cape Fair, Mo., died March 21 2004 at his home. Born in Chardon, he served his country for 25 years in the U.S. Army. A Green Beret with Special Forces Operation, he served three tours in Vietnam and spent numerous years overseas. He retired in 1979 and resided in Astor, Fla., before moving to Cape Fair in 1990. He was involved with rental properties until he became ill last year. Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Oddny; sons, Earl Jr. (Patti), of Cartersville, Ga., and James Hall, of Astor; brothers, Donald (Dorothy), of Middlefield, Mark (Kathy), Robert (Dottie), Berry and Garry Hall, all of Astor; sisters, Sandra Hall, of Branson, Mo., Barbara (Freeman) Byler and Billie (John) Veon, of Chardon; grandson, Ezra; and numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Rose Hall; and his youngest son, Jeffery. Graveside services with full military honors were held March 24 at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, Mo.

Louis S. Papp
Louis S. Papp, 83, of Auburn, died March 27 2004 in Geauga County from cancer. Born Nov. 11, 1920, in Cleveland, he attended Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Papp was an engineer/product designer and worked for Leader Tractor, Oliver Corp., Motch & Merriweather, where he developed a multipurpose lawn tractor called a Triple M, Pesco, and Air Maze Corp., from which he retired in 1976. He built a home in Auburn in 1954 and resided there until his death. A car enthusiast, his hobbies included antique tractor restoration, rock collecting in Arizona, Wyoming and Utah and making maple syrup. He was a member of the 31st Depot Repair Squadron of the U.S. Air Force and the International Chrysler 300 Club since 1970. Mr. Papp is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy (nee Jackson); and Diana (Michael) Finn, of Moreland Hills, Jane Finn, of Moreland Hills, and John Byerly, of Symsonia, Ky. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Byerly; sister, Helen Burns; parents, Emery and Rose Papp; and brother, James E. Papp. Funeral services were held March 30. Willa M. Petersen
Willa Mae Elizabeth Petersen (nee Martin), 87, of Chester, died March 26 2004 at Heather Hill in Munson. Born Feb. 5, 1916, in Old Ohio City in Cleveland, she resided in Chester since 1937. A 1934 graduate of Mayfield Heights High School, she married Vernon Petersen in Mayfield Village on July 24, 1937. For over 25 years, she was a real estate broker with her husband, owning Petersen Realty in Chester. Mrs. Petersen was a founding member and past president of the Geauga County Board of Realtors and a charter member of the Chester Women's Study Club. A talented artist and writer, she also was a member of the Chesterland Baptist Church. Ms. Petersen is survived by her daughter, Joyce (Richard) Hoge, of Atlanta; sons, Jerry (Kathy), of Munson, Gordon (Marian), of Claridon, Richard (Wendy), of Chester, and Steve (Lorri) Petersen, of Munson; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Lucille Risk, of Lancaster, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents, Junius and Adeline Marie (nee Duncan) Martin; granddaughter, Barbara Hoge; great-granddaughter, Beverlee Hoge; and brothers, Donald, Harry and Robert Martin. Anna L. Shepple
Anna Lee Joyce Shepple, 82, of Chardon Township, died March 26 2004 at her daughter's home. Born Aug. 2, 1921, in Indianapolis, she resided in Chardon for six years and previously in Bay Village for 41 years. She married Edmund L. Shepple in Greenfield, Ind., on Oct. 18, 1941. He preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 1996. An accomplished seamstress, she sewed the acolyte robes and the altar tapestry at her church, Westlake Christian Church in Westlake, where she was active in the women's guild. A sports enthusiast, she and her husband enjoyed attending Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns games with their season tickets. Mrs. Shepple is survived by her daughters, Vicki Lee (Doug) Dangerfield, of Elyria, and Nicki Lee (Max) Behr, of Chardon; son, Rickey Lee (Jeanie) Shepple, of Arvada, Colo.; grandchildren, Lynn Taylor, Tyler, Cody and Lacey Shepple and Karlee Behr; great-granddaughter, Hannah Kehr; and brothers, Milan and Ron Lummis, of Shelbyville, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Logan Shepple. Memorial services were held April 1 at Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon, with burial in Bennett Cemetery, Shelby County, Ind. Edward G. Zubler
Edward G. Zubler, 79, a lifetime resident of Orange, died March 20 2004 at University Hospitals of Cleveland. Dr. Zubler, a General Electric research chemist, developed the first halogen lamp in 1959. Born March 12, 1925, in Lackawanna, N.Y., he received a bachelor of science in chemistry from Canisius College in Buffalo in 1949 and earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry form the University of Notre Dame in 1953. He began experimenting with tungsten halogen lamps in 1953, when he joined General Electric, and was recognized for improving the tungsten filament lamp by inserting a halogen gas. Dr. Zubler earned numerous patents and awards for his work in advancing lighting technology and was honored in 1973 for his contributions. A published author of numerous technical articles, including 78 technical reports, of which 66 were classified proprietary, he gave many lectures in the 1980s. In 1978, Dr. Zubler's portrait and biography were displayed in permanent Exhibit of Technical Pioneers in Lighting for "Contributions to Tungsten Halogen Lamp Technology" at the Toshiba Science Institute in Kawasaki, Japan. Following retirement in 1988, he continued as a consultant for General Electric. For the last 12 years, he was an independent consultant and lighting technology expert for Teltech Resources Network Corp. During World War II, he served as a combat medic with the Army's 102nd Infantry Division in Central Europe and Rhineland campaigns, earning the rank of staff sergeant-battalion aid station. A two-time Purple Heart recipient, he received the Combat Medics Badge and the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster for valor twice, saving a fallen comrade during a sniper attack and battling enemy assault to retrieve medical supplies for treating wounded soldiers. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and former member of the Electrochemical Society. Dr. Zubler is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marybelle (nee Browning), whom he married on Jan. 31, 1950; children, Karen (John) Holmes, of Martins Ferry, Kurt D. (Jacquelyn) Zubler and Rena A. (Rick) Flovin, both of Sunnydale, Calif.; six grandchildren, Adam and Eric Holmes, David and Jessica Zubler and Blake and Kayla Flovin; and brother, Arthur (Ruth) Zubler, of Hamburg, N.Y. Kenneth R. Baker
Kenneth R. Baker, 65, of Colebrook, died May 23 2004 at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. Born Dec. 17, 1938, in Washington County, Ind., he was a 1956 graduate of Chardon High School and a resident of Colebrook since 1994. Mr. Baker was a tool and die maker for the Carlisle Industries of Middlefield for 12 years, retiring in 2000. He enjoyed attending flea markets and garage sales. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Sally (nee Seifert), whom he married on Jan. 30, 1982; daughters, Teresa Rose Baker, of Saybrook, Jullie A. Yeatman, of Orwell, and Kimberly R. Castro-Mazny, of Munson; stepsons, Steven P. Schmitt, of Burton, and Michael M. Craver, of Garrettsville; brothers, Don E., of Thompson, and Gary L. Baker, of Rome, Ohio; sister, Judy Rose Nungesser, of Eastlake; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan (nee Kavanagh) Baker; and sister, Peggy Weber. A memorial service was held May 29 at Greene Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
