Robert F. Derry
Robert F. Derry, 86, of Chagrin Falls, died Feb. 1 1998 at the Burton Health Care Center. He was born Sept. 26, 1911, in Uhrichsville.
Mr. Derry studied architecture for four years at Ohio State University and graduated from Western Reserve University with a degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in India, Burma and China. He was a technician with Company "C" 1880th Engineers Aviation Battalion.
Mr. Derry was a 32nd degree Mason and past master of Forest Hill Lodge, Scottish Rite, Blue Lodge, Shrine, Chanters and Royal Arch Mason. He retired as vice-president from Cardinal Federal Savings and Loan (formerly Second Federal Savings and Loan) in 1976 after 26 years of service.
Mr. Derry lived in Cleveland Heights until he moved to Chagrin Falls in 1989. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jean Derry, on Nov. 13, 1997; and his sister, Dorothy Henthorne.
He is survived by his sons, John (Pat) Derry of Pittsburgh and Alan (Tinya) Derry of Chagrin Falls; a daughter, Marty (Mike) Roth of Newark, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother John Derry of Venice, Fla.
Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 7, at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Mayfield Village.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Ann R. Tucker
Ann R. Tucker, 87, a resident of the Western Reserve Convalescent Home and formerly of Chagrin Falls, died Jan. 31 1998 at Meridia Hillcrest Hospital. She was born July 24, 1910, in Middletown, Conn., the daughter of Frank and Lillian Grippo.
Her hobbies included playing piano, reading, doing crossword puzzles and crocheting. She was a member of Elderlife at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls.
Mrs. Tucker is survived by her daughters, Diana Lenson, of South Russell and Donna Tucker of Rocky Hill, Conn.; a step-son, Thomas Tucker of Round Rock, Texas; granddaughters, Michelle Ruggie of Aurora and Deborah Lenson of Rocky Hill, Conn.; and a grandson, Bill Tucker of Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Tucker.

Salvatore Bertolone
Salvatore "Sonny" Bertolone, 67, of Solon, died Nov. 15 1998, at his residence. He had struggled for 26 months with stomach cancer.
Born in Cleveland, he began his working career at 14 at the former Pick-n-Pay Supermarkets. In 1953, he began with the Carling Brewery on Quincy Avenue in Cleveland for 13 years. In 1966, he worked in the construction industry and then Anderson Door Co. on Miles Road.
In 1979, Mr. Bertolone founded his own garage door service company with his youngest son, Sal Jr. The Sal Bertolone and Son Garage Door Service Co. will celebrate 20 years of successful business in 1999.
Mr. Bertolone was a member of the Solon Italian Club. He also enjoyed the accordion and harmonica, dancing and singing with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy (nee Luca); children, Joseph, Nancy Marie (Joseph) Catalani, Mark (Charlene), Antoinette (Joseph) Strazuso, Sal Jr. (Kimberly) and Rose Ann Bertolone; 10 grandchildren; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Nov. 18 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Warrensville Heights, with burial in All Saints Cemetery.
Martha M. Weber
Martha M. Weber, 74, of Dublin and formerly of Russell, died of a stroke on Nov. 25 1998, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. She was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Franklin, W.Va.
Mrs. Weber, affectionately known as Marty, was a graduate of Madison College (now James Madison University) with a degree in chemistry. She was a micro analyst for the Celanese Corp in Cumberland, Md., and later with the Wyeth Laboratories in Philadelphia. She also worked for five years as an analytical chemist for the Mogul Corp. in Chagrin Falls.
She lived in Russell for 29 years and moved to Dublin in 1995.
An active member of the United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls, she was a member of the Bible Study group, a Sunday School teacher and former president of the United Methodist Women and chairperson of the missions program and other committees.
She was also a member of the Chagrin Falls Current Events Club, the Early Morning Garden Club and the American Association of University Women.
Mrs. Weber is survived by two daughters, Nancy Kesterson of Plain City and Marian Poeppelmeyer of Hilliard; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Rembert McNeer of Virginia; and a sister, France Toomer of Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Christian Weber, in May of this year.
Funeral services were held Dec. 1 at the United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls.
William J. Pelle
William J. Pelle, 66, of Bainbridge, died at his residence on Thanksgiving Day 1998 following an illness of cancer. He was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Cleveland, and was a graduate of the old Bainbridge High School.
He joined the U.S. Navy following high school and served in the Korean War.
Mr. Pelle was owner and operator of the former J. and B. Machine Co. in Bainbridge until he retired in 1995.
He loved baseball and played in high school. He tried out for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team.
A lifetime resident of Bainbridge, he was raised on the family farm on Savage Road where he built his home later, and there he died with his family around him.
He was a member of the Church of the Holy Angels. His hobbies were his family, hunting, fishing and his two chocolate Labradors.
Mr. Pelle is survived by his wife, Carolyn; children, Theresa Sirk of Bainbridge, Jeffery (Rhonda) DeWater of Mantua Township, Robert DeWater of Wellsboro, Pa., Ted (Diane) DeWater of Bainbridge, and David Pelle of Bainbridge; grandchildren, Nicholas, Cory, Brittany, Melissa and Jessica; and a brother, Ernest Pelle of Powell, Tenn.
Funeral mass was said on Nov. 30 at Church of the Holy Angels.

Dudley E. Green
Dudley E. Green, 81, of Solon, died Jan. 14 1999 at his home from complications of prostate cancer. He was being cared for by his family and Cleveland Clinic Hospice.
Born on Feb. 3, 1917, in Oak Park, Ill., the only son of Carroll and Julia (nee Wing) Green, he lived in Solon for 50 years, prior in Twinsburg.
A graduate of Twinsburg High School, he married Clarice E. Craemer on June 8, 1940, in Twinsburg.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.
He worked for Cloyd Steininger building homes in the 1950s and then became a self-employed primary painter, wallpaper hanger and interior refinisher.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1863 in Solon.
Mr. Green loved to fish. He enjoyed gardening and other outdoor activities, in addition to helping his family and others.
He is survived by his wife, Clarice; sons, David E. (Connie), Michael E. (Nancy), and Tommy, all of Ohio; daughter Nancy (Dale) Lundblad of Cook; two granddaughters, Megan and Kimberly Green; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Jan. 18 at Kindrich-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home in Solon.
Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.

Sheila M. Braun
Sheila M. Braun, 59, of Bainbridge, died Jan. 20 1999 at her residence of Pick's disease, a rare form of an Alzheimer's related disease.
She was born on Sept. 8, 1939, in Cleveland, and was a graduate of St. Gregory the Great grade school and Beaumont High School.
A 1960 graduate of St. John's Hospital School of Nursing, she worked in the em ergency room and intensive care units at Hillcrest Hospital for 20 years on a part-time basis while raising five children.
In 1983, she received her bachelor's degree in health care management from Ursuline College, where she was a member of the Kappa Gamma Pi honor society for "grade point average and quality leadership and service." Following graduation, she worked full time at Hillcrest Hospital where she was the "Risk Manager" until her retirement in 1992.
She was an active member of the Church of the Resurrection in Solon.
Mrs. Braun is survived by her husband, Michael E. Braun Sr.; sons, Michael E. Jr. (Lisa) of Bainbridge, Dennis G. (Amy) of Lutz, Fla., Timothy J. (Deanna) of Beavercreek, Paul C. (JoAnna) of Columbus; daughter, Kathleen M. Braun of Atlanta; grandchildren, Courtney, Christopher, Sarah and Michael; her mother, Catherine Wervey of Spring Hill, Fla.; and brothers, Richard Wervey of Bainbridge and Gregory Wervey of Plant City, Fla.
Funeral Mass was celebrated on Jan. 25 at Church of the Resurrection in Solon.

Katherine F. Wick
Katherine F. Wick, 84, of Chagrin Falls and formerly of Shaker Heights, died Jan. 20 1999 at Heather Hill Nursing Home in Munson.
She was born April 28, 1914, in Cleveland Heights, and lived in Chagrin Falls for 20 years, prior for 40 years in Shaker Heights.
A 1931 graduate of Hathaway Brown, she attended finishing school at the Ogontz School in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Wick was a member of several garden clubs including Junior League Garden Club and the Town and Country Garden Club. Other memberships include the Intown Club of Cleveland and the Recreation League.
She was a member of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Shaker Country Club and the Kirtland Country Club.
She was also a volunteer for the Cleveland Art Museum and the Health Museum.
Mrs. Wick is survived by her husband, Robert B. Wick; daughters, Robin Wick of South Russell and Kathy W. Oliver of Kailua, Hawaii; grandchildren, Casey Abley and Abbey Abley, both of Denver, Kari McCartney of Atlanta and Kristin Oliver of Denver; a brother, Herbert W. Foster Jr. of South Euclid; and a sister, Alma F. Hillner of Savannah, Ga.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Apple.
Funeral services were held Jan. 25 at Fairmount Presbyterian Church.

David C. Humphrey
Dr. David C. Humphrey, 80, of Chagrin Falls and formerly of Shaker Heights, died at his residence on Jan. 19 1999 of respiratory failure and lung cancer.
He was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Kansas City, Mo., and was a 10-year resident of Chagrin Falls, prior a 35-year resident of Shaker Heights.
Dr. Humphrey earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Kansas. He married Margaret Dinsmore McCarty while he was a medical student. He then completed an internship and residency in Cincinnati, upon which he entered the U.S. Navy and served as a medical officer during World War II. He was a lieutenant with a PT squadron in the Phillipines.
He began a fellowship in medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in 1947, then joined its staff where he was an expert on kidney disease and high blood pressure. He served on the kidney-transplant team at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital when the procedure was new.
In 1951, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. An author of many scientific papers, he belonged to the Cleveland Academy of Medicine, the Ohio State and American medical associations and the American Heart Association. He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor fraternity.
He was the original chairman of the department of hypertension and renal disease, now nephrology and hypertension at Cleveland Clinic. He retired in 1983, but continued to serve as a consultant at the hospital until the end of 1995.
Dr. Humphrey enjoyed tennis and fishing and was a member of the Mount Pleasant Rod and Gun Club. He also was member of the Cleveland Skating Club, the Civil War Roundtable, Sons of the American Revolution, Dry Fly Fisherman, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History's Trout Club.
Dr. Humphrey is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret M. "Peggy" Humphrey; sons, Thomas Paul (Ann) of Bethesda, Md., and David C. (Shirley) of Solon; daughters, Ann Margaret (Stephen) Gillen of Cincinnati and Susan (Steven) McCord of Cincinnati; and grandchildren, Susan, Peter, Paul, Emily, Sarah, David, Jeff and Jennie.
Memorial services were held on Jan. 25 at Parkside Church in Bainbridge.

Michael R. Vitale
Michael R. Vitale, 71, of Aurora, died Jan. 21 1999 at Aurora Manor, a special care facility, of intracerebral hemorrhages.
Born in Cleveland on Dec. 27, 1927, he was raised in South Euclid. A graduate of the Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va., he served his country for two years in the U.S. Navy.
He attended Case Western Reserve University for three years and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Mr. Vitale had two careers. First, he was president of Pioneer Contracting Corp. in Bedford Heights for 35 years. His company completed hundreds of miles of state highways and municipal roads in Ohio, and were responsible for complete site development of several regional shopping malls, including Randall Mall, Richmond Mall and Beachwood Place. He also did the site work for Thistledown Racetrack. He also built and ran two asphalt plants in Bedford Heights.
His second career was president of M.J. Contracting Corp., where he developed some of the finest residential developments in Chagrin Falls, Auburn, Bainbridge and Russell, including Hemlock Lakes in Russell starting in 1977, Auburn Lakes in Auburn in 1982 and the Sanctuary in Bainbridge in 1994. He built homes in Pepper Mill Chase in Bainbridge and prestigious homes in Naples and Sarasota, Fla.
For over 16 years, he had built custom homes in the Chagrin Valley area with his wife, Laureen and daughter, Lillian Mushrush and son-in-law, Terry Mushrush through their company, M.J. Construction Co.
Mr. Vitale was a member of the Ohio Contractors Association, the International Operating Engineers, the Beta Alumni Association of CWRU, a life-time member of the Massanutten Military Academy Alumni Association and a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Bentleyville.
Mr. Vitale is survived by his wife of 44 years, Laureen C. (nee Anderson); a daughter, Lillian May (Terry) Mushrush of Bainbridge; a son, Richard (Patty) Vitale of Chardon; five grandchildren, Tiffany, Heather, Diedra, Jordan and Michael; and a brother, Theodore Vitale of South Euclid; and a sister, Valerie Bass of Sacramento, Calif.
Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Bentleyville.

Erma G. Hanna
Erma G. Hanna, 95, formerly a resident of Solon and Moreland Hills, died Jan. 22 1999 at Holly Hill Nursing Home in Newbury.
She was born in Pittsburgh, in 1903, to Mae and Christian Gottwald, and moved to Cleveland at an early age.
A graduate of National Park College, Silver Springs, Md., she was active in its alumnae association. The college became part of Walter Reed Hospital during World War II.
Mrs. Hanna worked in the public library system in Cleveland Heights.
She was a member of the Euclid Avenue Christian Church for 85 years, making her the longest continuous member of that congregation.
Mrs. Hanna loved animals and co-founded Valley Save-a-Pet, an organization which sponsors spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, and helping find homes for lost, abandoned or unwanted pets.
She was active in animal humane work throughout her life, and was awarded a trophy from the Western Reserve Kennel Club for her years of service.
She was also a Charter Member of the Chagrin Valley Trails and Riding Club.
An amateur lapidarian, Mrs. Hanna created jewelry pieces from gemstones, many of which she had unearthed herself. She was an artist, and painted many oil canvases until her eyesight weakened. She traveled widely but her favorite spot was her summer cottage in Marten River, Ontario. She was active in many charitable organizations.
Mrs. Hanna is survived by her two sons, M.A. "Jack" Hanna of Chardon and George C. Hanna of Chagrin Falls; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Milton A. Hanna, and her younger sister, Joan Gottwald Vietor, of Newark, Calif.
Funeral services were held Jan. 25 at Reed-Nichols-Brown Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls.
Interment is at the family plot in Lake View Cemetery.

Muriel B. Jones
Muriel B. Jones (nee Bindewald), 76, formerly of Chagrin Falls and Zellwood, Fla., died Jan. 19 1999.
She was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Bayonne, N.J.
A devoted wife and mother, she was a homemaker who enjoyed golf, playing at both Aurora and Tanglewood country clubs. She played bridge and loved reading, crossword puzzles and talking and lunching with her friends.
A lifetime member of P.E.O. Ohio Chapter CO, she was affiliated with the P.E.O. group at Mount Dora, Fla., where she was recording secretary. She was also a member of a Chagrin garden club.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her daughters, Candace J. (Harry Sr.) Lum of Hunting Valley, Bonnie J. (the Honorable Robert J.) Cindrich of Pittsburgh, Deborah J. (Dr. Robert) Thacker of Canton, N.Y., and Jacqueline J. (Philip Jr.) Alestri of Hudson; grandchildren, Harry Lum Jr., Megan L. Mehalko, David A. Lum, Stephen, Scott and Amanda Cindrich, Allison and Melissa Thacker, and Phillip III and Brian Alestri; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Kristen Mehalko.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Rex S. Brown and H. Allyn Jones.
Funeral services were private.

Gertrude J. Smith
Gertrude J. Smith, 94, a longtime South Russell resident, died Jan. 24 1999 at Burton Health Care Center.
Mrs. Smith was the wife of the former Chagrin Falls Police Chief Alvin "Smitty" Smith, who died in 1978.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter-in-law, Doris Smith; grandchildren, Alaine (Darryl) Sotera of Auburn, Alvin "Bean" (Caroline) Smith of South Russell and Micheal of South Russell; great-grandchildren, Craig (Dawn) and Curt Sotera, and Michelle, Jeff, Steve and Teddy Smith.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her two sons, Alvin and Joel.
Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls.
Burial was in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Chagrin Falls.

Ronald K. Hallstrom
Ronald K. Hallstrom, 56, of Cleveland Heights and formerly of Chagrin Falls, died Jan. 22 1999 at his home in Cleveland Heights, following a long battle with cancer.
He was born May 27, 1942, in Cleveland, the son of Margaret A. (nee Kivisto) and Kenneth G. Hallstrom.
A 1960 graduate of Chagrin Falls High School, he received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1964 from Case Institute of Technology.
Mr. Hallstrom was an engineer and manager at Warner & Swasey for 22 years, and Machine Tool Industry Management.
He married Marcia Rymker on June 19, 1965, at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls.
A member of the Boy Scouts of America, he enjoyed woodworking, outdoors, travel and spending time with his family.
Mr. Hallstrom is survived by his mother, Margaret A. Hallstrom; wife, Marcia R. Hallstrom; sons, Drs. Brian R. and Craig K. Hallstrom; brother, James B. Hallstrom; sister, Linda C. LaPointe; daughter-in-law, Kirsten E. Hallstrom; and grandson, Lars Ronald Hallstrom.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth G. Hallstrom.
Memorial services were held Jan. 27 at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls.

Katherine M. Hallbom
Katherine M. "Kaye" Hallbom, 83, formerly of Auburn Township, died Feb. 10 1999 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital, following a lingering illness.
She was born in Cleveland, on May 10, 1915, and was a resident of Auburn for much of her life.
She was a member of the Valley Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge and a member of the TWIGS of the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department.
Mrs. Hallbom is survived by a son, Richard (Betty) Rugg of Russell; grandsons, Robert (Dorothy) Rugg and Richard (Cathy) Rugg, all of Russell; great-grandchildren, Kristy, Kasey, Rebecca, Rachel and Richard; step-children, Robert, Lauren, Jannine and Daniel Hallbom; a brother, John Kennedy of Burton; and a sister, Esther Ronan of Solon.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Rugg; and her second husband, Robert Hallbom, a fire chief in Auburn.
Services were held Feb. 13 at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls.
Josephine C. Hahl
Josephine C. Hahl, 82, of Mayfield Heights, died Feb. 8 1999 at Heather Hill Health Care.
She was born Dec. 2, 1916, in Cleveland, the daughter of Harry and Clara Scott. She lived in Mayfield Heights the past nine years; prior in New Smyrna, Fla., and Chardon.
A homemaker and mother, she enjoyed knitting, playing bridge and volunteering at Geauga Regional Hospital with over 100 hours of service.
Mrs. Hahl is survived by her sons, Charles (Carole) Hahl of South Russell and Bill Hahl of Boca Raton, Fla.; a daughter, Joy Raine of Chardon; five grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Cope of North Royalton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1980.
Memorial Mass was celebrated Feb. 11 at Church of St. Mary in Chardon.
Burial was in Whitehaven Cemetery in Mayfield Village.
