Clair J. Lanzendorfer
Clair James Lanzendorfer, 74, of Solon, formerly of Duncansville, Pa., died Feb. 9 1999 at Hamlet Manor Nursing Home in Chagrin Falls from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Blair County, Pa., the son of Leo and Olene (nee Baker) Lanzendorfer. Mr. Lanzendorfer served his country during World War II in the 3rd Armored Amphibian Tractor Battalion, 1st Marine Division, of the United States Marine Corps. His older brother Earl and he served side-by-side as tank drivers during the landing on Peleliu in the South Pacific. His brother was killed during that landing and Mr. Lanzendorfer became the driver of his brother's tank after it was put back in operations several days later. He married Sara LaRue (nee Croft) on May 30, 1944, and moved to the Cleveland area where he worked at Euclid Road Machinery Co. He retired from Dahmler-Benz (originally General Motors and White Motors) in 1986 after 35 years of service. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively working in distant countries such as Russia, Iraq, Kuwait and South Africa. He was known by many as a man who could build or fix anything. He enjoyed his tools and his family. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1863 in Solon, Church of the Resurrection in Solon and Holy Angels in Bainbridge. Mr. Lanzendorfer is survived by his children, Lyn Tracy, of Dayton; Lon of Chagrin Falls; and Lisa Greenwood of Arlington, Va.; six grandchildren, Deidre, Cory, Kate, Sara, Tim and Mitchell; and six siblings, Floyd, Lou, Skip, Denny, Eva and Rita. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara LaRue; and brothers, Leo, Raymond, William, Earl and Roger. Mass of Christian burial was held Feb. 12 at Holy Angels Church in Bainbridge. Interment All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 12200 Fairhill Road, Cleveland 44120.

Pearl M. Bennett
Pearl Millicent Bennett (nee Quin), of Aurora, formerly of Moreland Hills for 12 years, died Feb. 4 1999 following a brief illness. She is survived by her husband, Peter Richard; and sons, Michael Peter and Simon Paul. Al services are private. The family suggests contributions to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, P.O. Maurice E. Furlong
Maurice E. "Morry" Furlong, 69, of Bainbridge, died of a heart attack on Feb. 4 1999, in Ellicottville, N.Y. He was born in Cleveland, on Feb. 19, 1929, and was a management analyst for the Department of Defense. Mr. Furlong is survived by his wife, Mitzi; children, Scott (Kim) of Medina and Bryan (Beth) of Gates Mills; grandchildren, Lindsay, Alex and Meghan; two brothers, Jerome and Thomas; and a sister, Eileen Elliott. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gregory. Services were held on Feb. 8 at the Fellowship Bible Church in Bainbridge. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or the Fellowship Bible Church.

Mayford Whaley
Mayford Whaley, 68, of Chauncey and formerly of Chagrin Falls, died Feb. 13 1999 at O'Blennis Memorial Hospital in Athens. He was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Sevierville, Tenn., the son of Isaac and Minnie Green Whaley. He was a retired officer of the Chagrin Falls Police Department. A veteran of the Korean conflict, he served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Bedford chapter and Chagrin Falls Eagles and Lions clubs. Mr. Whaley is survived by his son, Michael Whaley of San Francisco; three daughters, Michele (Donald E. Jr.) Meacham of Coalton, Melanie Whaley of Chauncey and Melissa (Sam Chamberlain) Whaley of Philadelphia; brothers, Clyde H. Whaley and Dick Whaley, both of Chagrin Falls; sisters, Lucille Deckle and Helen Mazzeo, both of Lakeland, Fla., and Jean Diermeyer of Port Charlotte, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and former wife, MaryAnne Green Whaley of Coalton. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Mayford Isaac Whaley; brothers, Buford, T.J., Conley and R.C. Whaley; and a sister, Ann Whaley. Funeral services were held Feb. 16 at Elsnaugle-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial was in Coalton Cemetery.

Harold W. Fugman
Harold William Fugman, 76, a lifelong resident of Mantua, died at his residence on Feb. 12 1999. He was born in Mantua, on May 24, 1922. A graduate of Kent State University with a bachelor of arts degree, he also received a bachelor of science degree from Principia College in Elsah, Ill. He worked his entire career as a design engineer and retired several years ago. Mr. Fugman is survived by his wife, Doris; a son, Varon Fugman of Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Trila Fugman of Godfrey, Ill.; a grandson, Gabriel William Fugman; and sisters, Ruth Kinney, Fern Clarke and Marian Madden. He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Fugman. No services will be held.

Dorothy M. Farrow
Dorothy M. Farrow, 62, of Bainbridge, died Feb. 13 1999 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. She was born in Cleveland, on Dec. 1, 1936, and was a longtime resident of Bainbridge. A volunteer at Geauga Regional Hospital, she was also a charter member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church. She was active in outreach programs of the church helping people with food, clothing and shelter all over the local area as well as in other countries. Mrs. Farrow is survived by her children, Michael E. (Diane) of Streetsboro, Michele (Jeff) Kurtzman of Mansfield, Cathy (Dave) Cook, Ernie (Debbie), Lisa (Ken) Lewis, all of Auburn, and Matthew (Rosie) of Fort Meyers, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Vernick of San Antonio, Texas, and a sister, Geraldine Arendas of Twinsburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Farrow, in 1995. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. tonight (Feb. 18) at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 17989 Chillicothe Road in Bainbridge. The family will host a reception following the service at the church. Kenneth Otto
Kenneth Otto, 62, of Burton and formerly of Chagrin Falls, died Feb. 13 1999 at Western Reserve Hospice Home in Euclid. He was born Oct. 6, 1936, in Cleveland, the son of Howard R. and Marcella (nee Paschal) Otto. A graduate of Orange High School Class of 1955, he served his country in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Mr. Otto was a horticulturalist and owner of Otto's Greenhouse in Burton for four years and in Warrensville Heights for 44 years. He loved animals, large and small. He also enjoyed tennis, golf and all water sports. An avid square dancer, he is a former member of the Chagrin Valley Squares in Northeast Ohio. Mr. Otto is survived by two sons, Dwight of Aurora and Chris of Burton; a brother, Howard of Beachwood; and a grandson, Riley. He was preceded in death by his parents. Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 23 at the American Legion Hall, 14052 Goodwin St. in Burton. No services will be observed, per Mr. Otto's wishes to be cremated.

Alain Finet
Alain Finet, 57, of Aurora and formerly of Newbury and Bainbridge, died Feb. 13 1999 at his home following a short illness. He was born June 15, 1941, in the Dominican Republic, the son of Claude and Rene Finet. He received a bachelor of science in engineering from Case Institute of Technology and a master's of business administration from Case Western Reserve University. He was a longtime employee of the Stock Equipment Co., where he was manager of the service department. Mr. Finet is survived by his wife, Sally; daughter, Denise Finet of Columbus; two sons, Marc Finet of Aurora and Jean-Paul Finet of Columbus; his mother, Claude Rinet; and a sister, Yannick Grullon of the Dominican Republic. A memorial service was held Feb. 16 at the Church in Aurora. The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church in Aurora, 146 S. William M. Sherwood
William M. Sherwood, of Solon and formerly of Las Vegas, died Feb. 10 1999 at Anna Maria Nursing Home in Aurora of pancreatic cancer. He was born July 25, 1923, in Cleveland, the son of John and Marie Sherwood. He attended Collinwood High School and is a veteran of World War II, having served his country in the U.S. Navy. A tool and die maker for General Motors, Fisher Body Coit Road plant for 30 years before retiring in 1977, he moved to Las Vegas in 1978. Mr. Sherwood is survived by his daughters, Judith A. (Frank) of Schaumburg, Ill., Annmarie (Joseph) of Solon; grandchildren, John, Frank, Alison and Amy; great-granddaughter, Katelyn; and brother, Daniel Sherwood of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, John Sherwood of South Euclid. Private family services were held. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Elizabeth D. Knox
Elizabeth D. Knox, 98, of Litchfield, Conn., died Sept. 28 1999 at her home after a short illness. She was the widow of Bartholomew J. Knox. Mrs. Knox was born Oct. 9, 1900, in Tournafulla, County Limerick, Ireland, daughter of the late John and Bridget (Sullivan) Doherty. She was a Litchfield resident for 72 years and worked for many prominent families in the area for over 60 years. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Litchfield and served her church through many organizations. She was a charter member of Circle 541, Daughters of Isabella and held many offices, including several terms as regent. She was also a member of the Morgan-Weir Post, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Litchfield Senior Citizens. She was an avid card player and hosted a weekly gathering of card-playing friends until her death. She leaves one son, Bartholomew "Chummy" J. Knox Jr., of Northfield, Conn.; three daughters, Elizabeth Barry (Mrs. Edward), of Woodbury, Conn., Joan Collins Barrow (Mrs. John), of Chagrin Falls, and Margaret "Peggy" Perusse (Mrs. Gerard), of Litchfield; three sisters, Nora Mae Doherty, of New York, Bridget Moran, of England, and Catherine Shute, of Ireland; 22 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins both in the United States and Ireland. Mass was held Saturday at St. Anthony of Padua Church, with internment at St. Anthony Cemetery. John P. Isham
John P. Isham, 84, of Willowick, died Sept. 28 1999 at Lake West Hospital. Born March 31, 1915, in Cleveland, he was a resident of Willowick for 20 years, prior Highland Heights and Lyndhurst. A controller at API Instruments, he retired after 30 years of service. Mr. Isham was a member of Forresters Lodge 650. He is survived by his wife, Mary Isham (nee Kortz); daughter, Linda Hodge of Enfield, N.H.; son, Tedd (Nancy) Isham of Chagrin Falls; and grandchildren, Jennifer Hodge, Katie Isham and Danny Isham. Funeral services were held Sept. 29 at the Jack Monreal Funeral Home in Willowick. Interment was at Whitehaven Cemetery. Grace J. Koepke

Grace Jeannette Koepke, 87, a lifelong resident of Chagrin Falls, died at Joy's Place in Munson Township where she was a resident for a short time. She was born in Chagrin Falls on Sept. 16, 1913. Mrs. Koepke was a retired postal clerk from the Chagrin Falls Post Office. She attended the Elderlife program at Federated Church of Chagrin Falls. She is survived by a niece, Judith (Gary) Riley of Chagrin Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Buck" Koepke; and three brothers, Alden, Kendall and Gordon Fellows. Services and burial were held Oct. 5.

Mary E. Burns
Mary E. Burns, 90, of Chagrin Falls and formerly of Cleveland Heights, died Oct. 1 1999 at Kensington of Anna Maria in Aurora. Born in Cambridge, on March 12, 1909, she was a resident of Cleveland Heights for 43 years prior to moving to Chagrin Falls 12 years ago. A high school graduate of Villa Angelo Academy, she later attended secretarial school. She was an executive secretary for U.S. Steel for many years and her hobby was cooking and her family. Mrs. Burns is survived by a son, R. Thomas (Ann) Burns of Bainbridge; and a daughter, Betsy (Michael) DeAngelo of Upper Arlington; grandchildren, Leslie Burns (Kurt) Koch, Colleen Marie (Ed) Monarchik, Tony (Ami) DeAngelo and Michelle DeAngelo (Darrell) Hughes; and two great-grandchildren, Connor Koch and John Monarchik. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. Burns in 1989. Memorial services were held Oct. 2 at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland. Harriet Swatek
Harriet Swatek (nee Brown), 83, of Solon, died Sept. 30 1999 at Anna Maria Nursing Home in Aurora from complications of Alzheimer's/dementia. Born in Cleveland, the daughter of Harry Brown and Augusta Knapp Brown, she graduated from Shaw High School and married her husband, Edward, in 1935. They lived in Maple Heights and Orange until she moved to Solon following her husband's death in 1981. A member of Church of the Resurrection in Solon, she was also involved in the church senior group. She was involved in St. Wenceslas Ladies Auxiliary, Bishop Hagan Ladies Guild of the Knights of Columbus, a volunteer at Sunny Acres Skilled Nursing Facility, and served meals at Epiphany Church. Mrs. Swatek is survived by sons, E.J. "Scotty" (Mary) Swatek of Napoleon and John (Jody) of Romona, Calif.; daughter Judy (Frank) Riha of Solon; grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of 11. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 4 at Church of the Resurrection in Solon. Interment was at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association or American Cancer Society.

Connie Eiben
Constance Rochelle Eiben (nee Olson), of Bainbridge, died Sept. 29 1999 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation from cancer. Born Feb. 6, 1935, in Madison, Minn., the daughter of Nathan and Cora Olson, she married Donald T. Eiben on Aug. 24, 1960. A graduate of St. Olaf College School of Nursing, in Northfield, Minn., she worked for the U.S. Public Health Service in her early nursing career. She met and later married her husband, a naval officer, while engaged on a field research project involving Navy personnel. After marriage, she was a school nurse and obtained a master's in education. She worked in the Chagrin and Kenston school districts and retired from the Beachwood School System. She enjoyed gardening, bridge, travel, friends and music. Mrs. Eiben is survived by her husband, Don; son, Erik; daughter, Jennifer Bell; sisters, Jeanne Vaala and Nadine Clegem; and brother, Clair Olson. Funeral services were held Oct. 4 at the United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls. Interment was at Munn Road Cemetery.

Robert J. Vajner
Robert J. Vajner, 80, a 51-year resident of Bainbridge, died Oct. 4 1999 at University Hospital Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. Born in Cleveland, on Feb. 15, 1919, he attended Orange High School and was a member of the Orange Alumni Association. A veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Vajner was a tool and die maker for Magnetics International. He was an avid trap shooter and a member of the Kingswood Gun Club. Mr. Vajner is survived by a daughter, Susan A. (John) Wood of Bainbridge; grandchildren, Cherie (Dr. Thomas) Dickson and Robert L. (Angela) Wood; and great-granddaughter, Olivia Antoinette Dickson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Rita L. (nee Murawski) Vajner; son, Robert J. Vajner Jr.; and sister, Jane Maichle. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Oct. 7) at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home. Burial is at Restland Cemetery in Bainbridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Community Church.

Ann M. Holowaty
Ann M. Holowaty (nee Vanac), 81, of Hambden Township, died Sept. 28 1999 at her home. Born May 29, 1918, in Munson Township, she was a lifelong Geauga County resident. She married Michael Holowaty in Chardon, on Oct. 11, 1938. He preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 1992. A licensed practical nurse at Geauga Community Hospital for 17 years, she retired in 1975. She enjoyed gardening and working in the health care field. Mrs. Holowaty is survived by her son, Mike Holowaty of Hambden Township; twin brother, Bill Vanac of Hambden Township; brother, Edward Vanac of Concord Township; and sister, Rose Barnes of Chester. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Holowaty; and her parents, Charles and Mary (nee Kabat) Vanac. Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Hambden Cemetery where she was buried.

Blanche B. Battles
Blanche B. Battles (nee Black), 89, of Thompson Township, died Sept. 28 1999 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. Born Feb. 21, 1910, in Willoughby, she was a resident of Thompson since 1934. Born Blanche Lillian Black, she married Harmon Battles in Mentor, on April 4, 1934. He preceded her in death June 22, 1990. Mrs. Battles was a bookkeeper for the former Snap Out Forms for many years, retiring in 1975. Prior to that, she worked for the former Thrasher's Meat Market on Chardon Square. A 25-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, she was Past Matron of Ruby Chapter in Chardon, Myrtle Chapter in Madison and a member of Urania Chapter in Painesville. She was a 50-year member of the Ledge Grange in Thompson Township and Pomona Grange of Geauga Country. Mrs. Battles enjoyed gardening, needlework and cooking with the Eastern Star for lodge dinners. She especially enjoyed working the pancake breakfasts at the Geauga County Maple Festival. She is survived by her sons, Dennis (Jane) Battles of Thompson Township and Ford (Gail) Battles of New Lyme; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Harmon Battles, she was preceded in death by her parents, William George and Charlotte (nee Surko) Black; sisters, Dorothy Woods and Evelyn Lamos; and a brother, George Black. Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Burr Funeral Home in Chardon Village. Interment was at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester. Memorial donations may be made to the Urania Chapter of Eastern Star, 88 N. St. Clair, Painesville 44077.
