Martha A. Calvey
Martha A. Calvey, 70, of Solon, died July 30 2000 at her residence from lung cancer.
Born July 29, 1930, in Cleveland, the daughter of Joseph and Pauline Onchak, she was a high school graduate and a housewife.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Calvey is survived by her children, Jack (Karen) of Aurora, William (Rose) of Mantua, Allen of Solon, Kevin (Debbie) of Aurora, Patrick (Donna) of Mantua and Robert of Solon; six grandchildren; sister, Tillie Gilbert; and brothers, John, Joseph and Albert Onchak.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Loretta Dudas.
Funeral services were held Aug. 2 at Church of the Holy Angels.
Mary Shirey
Mary Shirey, 91, of Solon and formerly of Bay View, died Aug. 2 2000 at Aurora Manor.
Born July 13, 1909, in Cleveland, the daughter of John and Maria Oravec, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Shirey is survived by her daughter-in-law, Anna Lou Kalta of Solon; grandchildren, Lee (Alan) Churchill, Terri (Ronald) Stone, John (Milka) Kalta, Andrea (Donald) Eckhoff and Richard Bolyard; great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Christina, Travis, Sara, Tiffany, Sean, Adam, Troy, Robert and Barbara; and sister, Julia Kus.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John F. Kalta; second husband, Harold Shirey; son, Robert Kalta; and brother, John Oravec.
Graveside services were held Aug. 5 in Castalia Cemetery in Margaretta Township.
John T. Weinrich
John "Jack" T. Weinrich, 67, of Bainbridge, died unexpectedly Aug. 2 2000 at his home.
Born Dec. 7, 1932, in Chicago, he was a national account manager for Van-Waters & Rogers, retiring two years ago.
Mr. Weinrich was an avid photographer and World War II history buff.
His enthusiasm for things nautical was evident when he built his own fully-accessorized tugboat with a license plate that read, "Tug Capt." He frequently visited the Port Clinton area.
Once a student at Notre Dame University, he remained a Notre Dame fan throughout his life.
Mr. Weinrich is survived by his wife, Nanci Ramsay Bowman Weinrich, who he married in 1977; eight children, Debbie Bowman (Tom) Rimar of Seattle, Kerri Bowman (Blake) Johnson of Columbia Station, Kelli Bowman (Dave) Kaniecki of Davison, Mich., Jenny Weinrich (Brian) Walsh of Avon Lake, Scott (Jennifer) Bowman of Cardington, Chris (Britta) Weinrich of Cincinnati, Todd (Steve) Bowman of Seattle and John Weinrich of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, Emily and Kelly Rimar, Matthew, Kelsey and Meghan Johnson, David Kaniecki, and Kelly and Molly Walsh; two sisters, Elizabeth Armstrong of Wilmette, Ill., and Susan Metzger of East Greenwich, R.I.; nieces, nephews, and his dog, Waggs.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorelei Roland; and his parents, Arthur and Elizabeth Weinrich.
Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday at St. Joan of Arc Church in Chagrin Falls, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Susan Krupa
Susan "Sam" Krupa (nee Linthicum), 53, of Hambden Township, died Aug. 2 2000 at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
Born Dec. 29, 1946, in Colorado Springs, Colo., she lived in Hambden Township for 13 years.
A full-time respiratory therapist at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital, she was respected and loved by co-workers and patients alike. She worked part-time at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights and Heather Hill Hospital Health and Care Center in Munson.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, she served in the U.S. Army.
A 1964 graduate of Willoughby South High School, she graduated from Lakeland Community College with an A.A.S. in respiratory therapy, and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Painesville.
She is survived by her mother and step-father, Daniel and Adria Eileen (nee Underwood) Bovitt of Logansport, Ind.; daughters, Rhonda (Jeff) Leonard of Mentor, Heather (Ray) Campbell of Huntsburg, Audra (Eric) Dean of Mentor and Samantha Krupa of Hambden Township; son, Aaron Kenny of Hambden Township; sister, Helen (Tim) Cooper of Willowick; brother, Rev. Eric (Julie) Linthicum of Painesville; niece, Brook Cooper of Willowick; nephews, Daniel, Jason, Nathan Linthicum of Painesville and Michael Cooper of Willowick; and grandchildren, Jacob and Hallie Leonard of Mentor, Kevin Warfield, Alex and Olivia Campbell of Huntsburg.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rodger R. Linthicum.
Memorial services were held Aug. 5 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Painesville.
Burial was beside her father at Whitehaven Cemetery in Gates Mills.
Charles E. Carson
Charles E. Carson, 75, of Euclid, died Aug. 1 2000 at Western Reserve Nursing Care in Kirtland.
Born Dec. 29, 1924, in Cleveland, the son of Charles and Margaret Carson, he resided in Euclid since 1965, prior in Chardon.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Corp. He was a stockperson for Bergs Furniture in Willoughby and attended Church of St. Mary in Chardon.
Mr. Carson is survived by his sisters, Evelyn Wallish of Bedford Heights, Dorothy Carson of Chardon and Elizabeth "Betty" Young of Chardon; brother, William J. Carson of Russell; 12 nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and two great-great nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece.
Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at Church of St. Mary in Chardon with burial in All Souls Cemetery.
Dennis Molzon
Dennis Molzon, 38, of Chardon Village, died Aug. 4 2000 at Hillcrest Hospital.
Born Dec. 18, 1961, in Painesville, he was a lifelong resident of Chardon.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was assistant farm manager for Mountain Glen Farm. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and paintball.
Mr. Molzon is survived by his wife, Laura (nee Budai) of Chardon Village; daughter, Danielle Molzon of Canton; father and step-mother, Harold (Debi) Molzon; grandmother, Vivian Molzon of Florida; brother, Daniel (Renee Roth) of Chardon; and nephews, Dustin and Darryl Molzon of Chardon.
He was preceded in death by his mother and brother, David Molzon.
Funeral services were held Aug. 9 with burial in Hambden Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions will be graciously accepted by the family for furthering the education of his daughter, Danielle Molzon.
John W. Buchanan
John "Buddy" W. Buchanan, 58, of Coeburn, Va., and formerly of Chardon, died July 29 2000 at his home.
He was a retired machinist from Chardon Rubber Co. in Chardon.
Mr. Buchanan is survived by his children, Regina (Frank) Dotson of Newbury, Rita (Rick) Macy of Painesville, Scott Buchanan of Shenandoah, Va., Tracy (Pat) Bost of Brook Park and Barbara (Dan) Conway of Euclid; and grandchildren, Dana and Ariel Dotson, Stephen and Andrew Macy, Kaley Dolan, David Bost and Daniel Conway.
Memorial services were held Aug. 1 with burial in the Buchanan family cemetery in Coeburn, Va.
Edwina E. Stone
Edwina Eileen Stone (nee Whitney), 80, a lifelong resident of Montville Township, died Aug. 6 2000 at her home.
She was born June 14, 1920, in Montville Township on the Whitney family farm. Sharing in the rich heritage of the farm where her great-grandparents, Samuel Platt Whitney and Lois Buttles Whitney and family first settled in Montville following their pioneer trek from Granville, Mass., to the Ohio Western Reserve in 1834, she lived on the farm her entire life.
She married Theodore P. Stone on March 16, 1940, at the family homestead, their future home for 60 years.
A longtime active member of the Montville Community Church and Hambden Congregational Church, she directed and accompanied the choirs and congregation with her organ and piano selections.
Mrs. Stone contributed to the Painesville Telegraph and Geauga Times Leader by writing community columns. The Montville Ladies Aid Society, the Dilly Dally Club, TOPS, Parent Teacher's Club and the Montville Grange have given her lifelong companions and friends.
Community Service continued through her commitment to Children Services as she and her family cared for more than 25 foster children.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting, cooking, her family and playing the organ.
Mrs. Stone is survived by her husband, Theodore P. Stone of Montville Township; daughters, Carol (Ralph) Mausling of Harpersfield and Martha (Daniel) Grondin of Columbus; son, Theodore C. (Connie) Stone of Kent; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Franz and Clara Whitney; brother, Edwin Whitney; sisters, Pauline Shaw, Ouida Warner, Eloise Whitney and Marion Whitney; and grandchild, Charles R. Mausling.
Funeral services were held yesterday with burial in Montville Township Cemetery.

David A. Corey
David Anthony "Bud" Corey, M.D., 73, of Knoxville, Tenn., and formerly of Chardon, died Aug. 2 2000 at St. Mary's Residential Hospice in Knoxville.
Born Sept. 1, 1926, in Cleveland, the son of Dr. Walter C. and Mary T. Corey, he moved to Knoxville in 1962.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the battle of Okinowa and the occupation of Korea.
He received his bachelor of arts degree from Hiram College and his doctor of medicine from Ohio State University, and completed residency in anesthesiology at Children's Hospital in Columbus. He practiced general medicine and anesthesiology in Chardon before moving to Knoxville in 1962 to join the Knoxville Anesthesia Group, finally retiring in 1993.
Dr. Corey is survived by his wife, Bettie J. Corey, whom he married on April 16, 1988; his sons, Walter C. (Barbara) Corey of Knoxville, Tenn., John (Yvonne) Corey of Huntsville, Ala., and Paul (Ana) Corey of Frisco, Texas; daughters, Lynne (John) Jamison of Moncks Corner, S.C. and Margaret (Douglas) Kreyling of Desoto, Texas; sisters, Ann Rebecca (Charles) Phipps of Ashtabula and Elizabeth (Lee) Snow of LeSueur, Minn.; former wife, Ardele Corey of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Walter and Mary Corey; and a niece, Susan Phipps Sedlock.
Funeral services were held Aug. 5 at Church of the Ascension in Knoxville with interment in the Columbarium at the Ascension.

Eugene S. Gomsi
Eugene S. Gomsi, 83, of Chagrin Falls, died from cancer on Oct. 11 2000 at Hamlet Manor in Chagrin Falls.
Born Oct. 27, 1916, in Warren, he resided in Chagrin Falls since 1975.
A 1935 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School in Youngstown, he was the labor relations director for Ohio Youth Commission, retiring in 1982. He worked in the same capacity for Mullins Manufacturing in Warren, which later became Youngstown Kitchens, then American Standard.
Mr. Gomsi was the precinct committee man for the Democratic Party in Warren in the 1960s and early '70s.
A charter member of Warren Junior Military Band, he was a drummer.
He volunteered his services at Valley Save-a-Pet and was a member of Lost Chord Club of Cleveland. His hobbies were golf, animals and gardening.
Mr. Gomsi is survived by his wife, Nancy A. (nee Brogan); children, Jeff, Eugene, Nancy, Deborah and Dennis; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. and Tyyne (nee Kivinismi) Gomsi; one sister, one brother, and his son, Gary Gomsi.

Calogero Romeo
Calogero Romeo, 84, of Solon, died Oct. 6 2000 at Hillcrest Hospital from pneumonia.
Born April 12, 1916, in Sicily, the son of Gaetano and Maria (nee Miracola) Romeo, he was a machinist.
Mr. Romeo was the former president of the Italian Club.
He is survived by his wife, Rosina (nee Sberna); son, Tom (Jeannine) of Twinsburg; his sister, Carmelina Belfiore of Broadview Heights; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Angelina, Lorenzo and Raffaele Romeo and Margarita Belfiore.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 9 at St. Rita Church in Solon.
Interment was in All Saints Cemetery.
Florence D. Kosits
Florence D. Kosits (nee Ican), 82, of Solon, died Oct. 5 2000 at Heather Hill Nursing Home Corinne Dolan Center.
Born July 14, 1918, in Cleveland, the daughter of John and Mary (nee Michalko) Ican, she was the secretary at the Chagrin Valley Country Club.
Mrs. Kosits is survived by her son, Ronald (Carol); daughters, Clarice (Jerry) Dulay and Kimberly (John) Stephan; grandchildren, Scott, Donna (Anthony) Smrdel, Dawn (Arnold) Martini, Jill (Steve) Nock, Michael (Tracy) Dulay, Reid and Cole Stephan; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Kosits.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 9 at St. Rita Church in Solon.
Interment was in All Souls Cemetery.
Mildred F. Leigh
Mildred Fowler Leigh, 85, formerly of Russell, died Oct. 11 2000 in Belfast, Maine.
Born in Marshfield, Mass., she married Henry M. Leigh in 1943, and raised her children in Cleveland.
She was active at Christ Episcopal Church in Shaker Heights and also in many charitable activities, including the Children's Guild.
She was an avid gardener and golfer.
Mrs. Leigh is survived by her husband, Henry; daughter, Elizabeth (Charles) Buell; son, Henry; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Oct. 23 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden, Maine. Private interment will follow.

Thomas E. Bird
Thomas Edward Bird, 32, of Arizona and formerly of Russell, died Oct. 7 2000 in Mesa, Ariz.
Born July 23, 1968, in Geauga County, he was raised in Chardon. He attended Maple Elementary School, the Geauga Christian School and Howe Military Academy in Howe, Ind.
As a youth, he attended Chardon Assembly of God Church and was active in Boy Scouts and Little League.
Mr. Bird is survived by his parents, Bruce and Sheila (nee Line) Bird of Russell; brothers, Robert Bird of Largo, Fla., Peter Bird of Scottsdale, Ariz., and James (Susan) Bird of Ravenna; sister, Amanda (Christopher) Bird-Bosler of Burton; grandmothers, Elizabeth Line of Mesa, Ariz., and Helen Bird of Chagrin Falls; uncles, Robert Line and Lloyd Line, both of Mesa, Ariz., and Edward (Cynthia) Line of Sumter, S.C.; aunts, Patricia (George) Edwards of Chardon and Linda (Michael) Powers of Phoenix; nieces, Ashley, Alexandra and Brittany Bird; nephews, Jonathan and James Bird IV and Caleb Bosler; many cousins and his pet, "Lady."
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Lloyd W. Line Jr. and James R. Bird II; great-grandparents, Lloyd and Martha Line and Peter and Elizabeth Orr; and aunt, Barbara Bird-May.

William A. Wallace
William Andrew Wallace, of Huntington, W.Va., and formerly of Solon, died Oct. 29 2000 at his home from cancer.
Born Nov. 3, 1929, in Greenwood Township, Pa., son of Joseph Kelso and Thelma Grace Thomas Wallace, he was a counselor, assistant principal and principal at Solon High School.
Dr. Wallace received a bachelor of science in 1953 from Geneva College, his master's in education in 1957 from Kent State University, and his doctorate in education in 1966 from Wayne State University.
He taught high school in East Liverpool and was an instructor at Kent State University. In addition, he was an administrative assistant in admissions at Wayne State University and a counselor educator at Marshall University, until his retirement.
Dr. Wallace was honored as founding chapter contact for Chi Sigma Iota, Mu Upsilon Chapter, counseling academic and professional honor society, and received the Marshall University Distinguished Research Award.
He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, National Education Association, American Counselor Educators Association and Text and Academic Authors Association.
Dr. Wallace was a published author of several textbooks in his field.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1947 to 1950, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1960.
A gifted trumpet player, he enjoyed a brief career as a professional musician.
Dr. Wallace is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lois Wallace; sons, Blake W. (Elizabeth) Wallace of Virginia Beach, Va., and William S. (Dr. Janet) Wallace of Huntington, W.Va.; three grandchildren, W. Maxwell, Emily F. and Samuel J. Wallace, all of Huntington, W.Va.; a brother, Theodore G. Wallace of Fort Myers, Fla.; and a sister, Janet M. Eichenlaub of Tempe, Ariz.
Funeral services were held Nov. 1 at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church in Huntington, W.Va., with private burial in Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington, W.Va.

Harold G. Phillips
Harold G. Phillips, 88, of Hambden Township, died Nov. 8 2000 at Lake Hospital Systems in Painesville.
Born June 20, 1912, in East Claridon, he was a lifelong resident of the area, with the exception of living in Mentor from 1935 to 1963.
A petroleum manager for Western Reserve Corp. for 15 years, retiring in 1978, he formerly worked for the Bolton & Gale Estate in Mentor for 26 years.
A 1930 graduate of Chardon High School, he married Flora Winchell in Chardon, on Sept. 15, 1934.
Mr. Phillips was owner operator of the Century Acre Farm that was selected as one of the 1995 regional winners in the "Ohio Outstanding Century Farm" program.
A 4-H adviser in Lake County, he was a 50-year member and former board member of the Lake and Geauga County Farm Bureau.
Mr. Phillips was a charter member of the Hambden Grange since 1929, having served as Master and other offices. He was also a member of the Pomona State and National Granges.
A member of the Hambden Congregational Church, he served on the board and was an usher for many years.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Flora (nee Winchell) Phillips of Hambden Township; daughter, Nancy (Gene) Wetzel of Hambden Township; grandchildren, Kim (Rick) Poff and Eugene (Amy) Wetzel of Hambden Township; brother, Robert (Charlotte) Phillips of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; sister-in-law, Laura Phillips of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Katherine (nee Shanower) Phillips; and brothers, William and Allen Phillips.
Funeral services were held Nov. 11, with burial in Hambden Cemetery.

Alvin W. Metzger
Alvin W. Metzger, 84, of Thompson Township, died Nov. 11 2000 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital.
Born March 11, 1916, in Cleveland, he was a lifelong Geauga County resident and a press operator for Chardon Rubber Co. from 1954 to 1981.
A veteran of World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army. He participated in three campaigns: Southern Philippines, Luzon and the Bismarck Archipelago in the Pacific Theater.
He married Evelyn J. Presley on June 25, 1949, in Chardon Village and attended the Grace Lutheran Church in Thompson Township.
Mr. Metzger is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Thompson Township; daughter, Kathleen Ann (Lee) Kelley of Montville Township; sons, Allen (Nancy) Metzger of Newport News, Va., and David W. Metzger of Thompson Township; sister, Arline Brockway of Burton; and two grandchildren, Felecia Wichman and Eric Metzger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Katherine (nee Arndt) Metzger; and one grandson, Jeffrey Wichman.
Funeral services were held Nov. 15 with burial in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.
