Richard Glaisa
Richard Glaisa, 61, of Newbury Township, died Nov. 1 2001 at Hospice House of the Western Reserve in Cleveland.
Born March 10, 1940, in Cleveland, he was a lifelong area resident.
A machinist at Christopher Tool Co. in Solon for many years, he became very proficient and spent many hours on his computer.
Mr. Glaisa is survived by his aunt, Betty Tascar, of Seven Hills; and his cousin, Joan Onda, of Garfield Heights.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Mary (nee Sacsina) Glaisa.
Private family services were held, and burial was in Newbury Center Cemetery.
Lila C. Chambers
Lila C. Chambers (nee Helberg), 78, of Chagrin Falls, died Dec. 5 2001 at Burton Health Care Center.
Born in Chagrin Falls, on Oct. 27, 1923, she was a lifelong resident.
Mrs. Chambers is survived by her daughter, Susan Mullen (companion Robert K. Morris); sister, Eleanor Horton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde C. Chambers; a son, Michael H. Chambers; a brother, Stanley Helbert; and a sister, Helen Hentemann.
Graveside services were held at Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

Carmello S. Cicero
Carmello "Carmen" S. Cicero, of Lyndhurst and formerly of Bainbridge and Newbury, died Dec. 9 2001 at Hillcrest Hospital.
Born in Cleveland, he was a lieutenant on the Woodmere Police Department for 25 years. Prior he worked for the former Republic Steel Co. for 30 years. He also was a volunteer firefighter for the Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Cicero is survived by his wife, Grace (nee Vaccariello); children, Cynthia (Michael) Goliat, Christopher, Denise (James) Holloway, Darrell (Virginia) and Patrice (Kenneth) Sadd; six grandchildren; and siblings, Signorina Bilinovich, Fred Cicero, Samuel Cicero and Josephine Ferko.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Biagio and Benedetta (nee Aquila) Cicero; brothers, Nunzio, Santo and Anthony; and sisters, Grace and Theresa.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Dec. 14) at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Dec. 13).
Margaret H. Crowell
Margaret "June" Helen Crowell, 76, formerly of Chagrin Falls, died Sept. 1 2001 at Craven Regional Medical Center.
She retired in 1980 as first sergeant following 25 years of service with the U.S. Marine Corps.
She attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7315, FRA Branch 141, American Legion Post 202, Women's Marine Association, Marine Corps League and Havelock Senior Citizens.
Ms. Crowell was honored by being chosen for the Chagrin Falls Schools' Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Ann Crowell; her cousins, Betty Lowe (Don) Button and Patricia Lowe (George) Clemens, of Auburn; five nieces, one nephew, and many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Lowe Crowell; brother, Robert Crowell; and cousin, Ruth Lowe Timmons.
Funeral services were held at the funeral chapel, and interment with military honors followed in Forest Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Thomas G. Fisher
Thomas G. Fisher, 60, of Chardon Township, died Dec. 6 2001 at his home.
Born April 18, 1941, in Stoneboro, Pa., he resided in Chardon for 28 years, prior in Wickliffe.
A chemical engineer for Lubrizol since 1967, he retired Nov. 14 2001.
He married Shirley McGhee on June 15, 1963, in Jackson Center, Pa.
Mr. Fisher received his bachelor's degree from Grove City College and master's from the University of West Virginia.
He also was a registered, professional engineer and a member of the AIChe.
The author of "Batch Control Systems," a technical reference in the field of chemical engineering, he also authored other publications with regard to batch automation and safety interlock systems.
Mr. Fisher was a Fellow with the Instrument Society of America and formerly served as chairman, editor and vice president of publications.
He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, chairman of the World Batch Forum and was awarded the World Batch Forum's 2001 Dr. Guido Carlo-Stella Award. He was known as the "Father of Batch Automation."
Control Engineering Magazine, a national publication, awarded Mr. Fisher the 1997 Engineer of the Year.
A Cleveland Indians fan, he enjoyed baseball, and having breakfast with his granddaughters was the highlight of his week, each Saturday and Sunday morning. He enjoyed spending time at his computer.
Mr. Fisher is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Chardon; daughter, Rebecca R. (Todd) Stocker, of Munson; sons, Gary E. (Becky) Fisher, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jeffrey A. (Suzanne) Fisher, of Munson; grandchildren, T.J. Shane, Tristan, Joseph Fisher and Kyle King, of Fayetteville, Sarah and Margaret Fisher, of Munson, and Emma and Abby Stocker, of Munson; mother, Ruth (nee Faulconbridge) Fisher, of Sandy Lake, Pa.; sisters, Nancy Wescott, of Sandy Lake, and Mary Jane Gatewood, of Jackson Center, Pa.; and brother, Melvin Fisher, of Jackson Center.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Fisher; and granddaughter, Dana Leigh Fisher.
Funeral services were held Dec. 10 at Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon, with burial in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

Iris L. Fisher-Knox
Iris Louise Fisher-Knox, formerly of South Russell and Newbury, died Dec. 5 2001 at Heather Hill Nursing Home in Chardon.
Born July 2, 1914, in Cleveland, to Walter and Mary Conrad, she made her home in Ozona, Fla., but spent most of her adult life in South Russell and Newbury.
A former member of the Newbury Community Church and Berea Baptist Church of Tarpon Springs, Fla., she was a 50-year member and organist for the Golden Rule Chapter of the Ohio Eastern Star.
She played piano for the Tony Marchetti Dance Studio of Chagrin Falls and until recently played for the Ozona Recreation Club.
Mrs. Fisher-Knox, fondly remembered for her community service and delicious pies, served as the village clerk for South Russell in the 1960s and was a retired secretary for Fisher and Associates Engineering Firm in Solon.
She is survived by her husband of 18 months, George Knox; children, Dr. Fred (Phyllis) Scott, of Lancaster, and Charlene (Al) van der Pyl-Chee, of Honolulu; step-daughters, Barbara Fisher, of Pennsylvania, Kathleen Fisher, of Oregon, and Carol (Jim) Meininghaus, of Newbury; grandsons, Dr. David (Dr. Tara) Scott, of Akron, Dr. John (Dr. Laurianne) Scott, of Lancaster, Mark (Karen) van der Pyl, of Menlo Park, Calif., and Logan van der Pyl, of Honolulu; step-grandson, Ryan (Beth) Drabek, of Newbury; great-granddaughters, Jocelyn Scott, Mallory Scott and Jacy Drabek; brother-in-law, Bill (Norma) Card, of Clearwater, Fla., and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Charles Scott and Wilmer Fisher; sister, Jane Card; sister and brother-in-law, Marian (Mike) Laska; and brother and sister-in-law, Fred (Bernadine) Conrad.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Newbury Community Church.

Murray N. Goodrich Jr.
Murray "Bud" N. Goodrich Jr., 75, of Southern Pines, N.C., died Dec. 8 2001 at his home.
Born Nov. 3, 1926, in Cleveland, he resided in Munson Township for 25 years, formerly Painesville, before moving to North Carolina in 1983 upon retirement.
He was the manager of architectural and structural design for central engineering staff at the Lubrizol Corp. in Wickliffe from 1956 to 1983.
He married Rosemary Lawrence in Painesville in 1961.
Mr. Goodrich attended public schools in Painesville, graduating from Harvey High School.
During World War II, he served as a signalman with the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic and Pacific areas.
Upon completion of military duty, he attended Stout Institute, in Menomonie, Wisc., and the Chicago Technical College in Chicago, where he graduated with a B.S. in architectural engineering in 1950.
He was employed by Green-Smith Associates, architects in Painesville, and then managed his own architectural firm for several years prior to joining Lubrizol.
An avid sportsman, he was involved in Little League baseball, football, golf and harness horses.
A life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 1692, he actively played golf at clubs in Southern Pines, serving as past president of the Early Bird Golf Association.
Mr. Goodrich is survived by his wife, Rosemary (nee Lawrence) Goodrich, of Southern Pines, N.C.; son, David W. (Judy) Goodrich, of Bellefontaine; grandchildren, Bryce and Hayley Goodrich; and sister, Patricia Norton, of Mentor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Murray N. and Beatrice (nee Basquin) Goodrich Sr.
Private family services were held Dec. 12, with burial in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester.

Thomas C. Hummel Sr.
Thomas Carl Hummel Sr., 62, a lifelong resident of Chardon, died Dec. 8 2001 at his home.
Born May 14, 1939, in Chardon, he married Joyce Bican in Chardon on July 20, 1963.
His career as a banker started with Geauga County National Bank for nine years, then he served as manager of the Chardon branch of Security Federal Savings & Loan for 28 years and then two years for the First County Bank, retiring in January 2000.
He also worked for the Alvord Insurance Agency for a short time.
A veteran of the Ohio National Guard during the Vietnam War, he was an avid history buff interested in the Civil War and World War II era.
Mr. Hummel was a member of the original Chardon Village charter commission in 1980 and Chardon Village housing council and planning commission for many years.
A faithful member of the Chardon Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years, he held positions of corporation president, secretary-treasurer, first assistant chief and honorary assistant chief.
Mr. Hummel spent summer vacations in Buckhorn, Ore., since his youth and enjoyed taking his family and following that tradition.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce (nee Bican), of Chardon; daughter, Heidi (Paul) Marks, of Chardon; son, Thomas C. (Christine Bene) Hummel Jr., of Chardon; grandchildren, Thomas C. III, Kaitlyn and Emily Hummel, and David, Hannah and Jeremy Marks; sisters, Kathleen (Malcolm) Dawson, of Montville, Johanna (Gordon) McDonald, of Radnor, and Holly (Ronald) Jonovich, of Chardon; brothers, Robert (Beverly Barr) Hummel, of Louisville, Ky., and William (Dianne Filla) Hummel, of Windsor Township.
Other survivors include sister-in-law, Barbara (Tyler) Whitmer, of Arkansas; mother-in-law, Thora Lattmer, of Chardon; step sister-in-law, Susan Brown (nee Alvord), of Willoughby; step brother-in-law, James Alvord, of Chardon; 10 nieces and 10 nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elsie (nee Waters) Hummel.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Dec. 14) at Pilgrim Christian Church, 202 S. Hambden St. in Chardon Square. Burial will be in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

Virginia F. Keller
Virginia Faye Keller (nee Anderson), 78, of Chardon Township, died Dec. 9 2001 at University Hospital Health System Geauga Regional Hospital.
Born in Beaverdale, Pa., she resided in Chardon for 50 years.
A homemaker, she married William T. Keller on May 10, 1941, in Cleveland. He preceded her in death April 9, 2000.
Mrs. Keller enjoyed playing Bingo at the local schools, reading and playing cards with family and friends.
She had a very big heart and was always willing to help anyone in need. She appreciated the little things in life and her family always came first.
Survived by a family who loved her very much, she was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Keller; parents, Charles and Ina (nee Driggs) Anderson; four brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services were held Dec. 13, with burial in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

Michael G. Lucas
Michael G. Lucas, 79, of Solon, died Dec. 8 2001 in Sagamore Hills.
A truck driver for Forest City and North American Lumber and Superior Pipe Co., he retired in 1985.
A veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II, he was a 30-year member of Teamsters 436.
His hobbies were reading and gardening.
Mr. Lucas is survived by his children, Jacqueline (Robert) Sutton, Gregory (Naomi) Lucas and Michelle Lucas; grandchildren, Carlene (James) Flynn, Johnny Roberts Jr., and Max Sutton; great-grandchild, Ian Miller; and longtime friends, Patrick and Betty Kearney.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June (nee Nordahl); and siblings, Jack, Joseph, James, Albert, Ann Krakora and Rose Sersa.
Funeral services were held Dec. 11, with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.
Gustav W. Lundstrom
Gustav "Gust" Wilhelm Lundstrom, 95, of Russell, died Dec. 4 2001 at Heather Hill Health Care Facility.
Born Nov. 18, 1906, in Sweden, he was formerly of New Port Richey, Fla., and Chicago.
Mr. Lundstrom immigrated to the United States in 1925 and became a naturalized citizen.
He married Alice Youngman, of Chicago, in 1933 and was a well-known painter in the Chicago area. In 1974, the couple retired to Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, in 1978.
Mr. Lundstrom is survived by his son, William J. "Bill" (Susan Creveling) Lundstrom, of Russell; and granddaughters, Lara and Kristin Lundstrom.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 15 in the Chapel of the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls.

William S. Powley
William S. Powley, 83, of Arlington Heights, Ill., and formerly of Chagrin Falls, Boardman and Hilton Head, S.C., died Dec. 8 2001 at the Moorings Health Care Center in Arlington Heights.
Born May 2, 1918, in Altoona, Pa., the son of James and Agnes Powley, he lived in Chagrin Falls from 1956 to 1981 when he retired to Hilton Head, S.C.
While in Chagrin Falls, he was a member and past president of the Chagrin Falls Kiwanis and past Scoutmaster for the Russell Boy Scout troop.
Mr. Powley earned a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of lieutenant and served during World War II on the submarine USS Muskelung in the Pacific.
Following the war, he resided in Youngstown and worked as an engineer for General Electric for 34 years, mostly in the lamp glass department in Cleveland.
He attained the post of General Electric's General Manager of Quartz and Chemical Products. He also supervised the development of the quartz microchips now used in all computers, the Lucalox lamps now used in many streetlights, and the huge quartz mirror used in the immense telescope at Kitty Pt., N.M. He retired in 1980.
Most of his retirement was spent on the golf course as he was a fabulous golfer well into his 70s.
Mr. Powley is survived by his wife, Carolyn (nee Murray), whom he married Jan. 13. 1945; son, David (Caroline) Powley, of California; daughters, Carolyn (John) Head, of Sparta, N.J., and Jean (Edward) Murphy, of Des Plaines, Ill.; grandchildren, Anne (Edward) Gutshall, John (Michelle) Head, Patrick Head, Robert Powley, Edward, William and Andrew Murphy; and great-grandchildren, Sam and Claire Gutshall and John and Shelby Head.
He was preceded in death by four sisters.

Charles N. Schlaff
Charles Nicholas Schlaff, 86, of Parma, and formerly of Moreland Hills, died Dec. 2 2001 at Parma Hospital from complications of dementia.
Born in Elyria on July 14, 1915, the son of Pearl (nee Roesch) and Nicholas John Schlaff, he was raised in Toledo and graduated from Libbey High School. He received a B.A. in education in 1937 from the University of Toledo.
Mr. Schlaff postponed his education to enlist in the Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945, and was honorably discharged in 1945 as chief petty officer LST underwater demolition.
He accepted his first teaching job with Oak Harbor Schools in 1942, then taught and coached for Lorain Public Schools from 1945 to 1947. In 1947, he settled in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst Schools.
From 1949 to 1953, he was head football coach at Brush High School, and a history and English teacher. He was the assistant principal at Brush until he accepted duties as principal at Memorial Junior High School from 1961 to 1981, when he retired.
He completed an M.B.E. at Kent State University at night school from 1954 to 1958, graduating in June of 1958.
He married Mary Douglas Percy in April 1949 in Twinsburg and was a former member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church.
Mr. Schlaff is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Sally Schlaff, of Canal Winchester, Catherine (Frank) Special, of Cuyahoga Falls, and Nicholas (Laura), of Broadview Heights; two grandchildren, Katherine and Jennifer; and a sister, Joyce Johnson.
Funeral services were held Dec. 6, with a private burial at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.
June M. Stone
June M. "Aunt June" Stone, 82, of Chardon, died Dec. 10 2001 at Heritage Care Nursing Home in Oakwood Village.
Born in Newbury on June 25, 1919, she was a lifelong Geauga County resident, living in Chardon since 1953.
A 1938 graduate of Chardon High School, she was a 1998 inductee into the Chardon High School Alumni Hall of Fame.
The deputy registrar for Geauga County for eight years, she retired in 1984. A former precinct committee worker for the Republican Party for 22 years, she also was an office worker at a local corporation for 29 1/2 years.
Ms. Stone was an active member of Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon, where she formerly served as secretary.
In 1999, she was inducted into the first Geauga County Republican Party Hall of Fame.
Her participation in the community included serving as president of the former Geauga County Charter of Zonta International in the 1970s, a charter and current member of Chardon Square Association, past member of Chardon Chamber of Commerce, Chardon Historical Society and the former Newbury Grange, and past board member of Chardon Day Care Center.
Ms. Stone is survived by her sister, Leita Smith, of Chardon; brother, Clarence "Archie" (Hazel) Stone, of Chardon; nephews, Craig (Norma) Smith, of Hawaii, Regan (Peggy) Smith, of Newbury, Robin (Mary Ann "Mazie") Smith, of Munson, and Jeffrey (Karen) Stone, of Chardon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Florence "Flossie" (nee Tuttle) Stone; sister, Lucille Rasch; and brother, Cecil Stone.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Dec. 15) at Ritondaro Funeral Home, 126 South St. in Chardon. Family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until time of memorial service.
Burial of cremated remains will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Munson.
Mary L. Tobin
Sister Mary Loretta Tobin, 87, of Munson, died Dec. 8 2001 at Regina Health Center in Richfield.
Born Jan. 21, 1914, in Warren, the daughter of Michael and Henrietta (nee Baker) Tobin, she lived in Munson since 1982.
She taught primary grade classes for 44 years in Catholic schools in Cleveland, Elyria, Lorain, East Liverpool, Avon, Youngstown and Chardon, as well as in Arlington, Va., Washington, D.C., and in Downey and San Pablo in California.
She is survived by her niece, Sister Mary Kathleen Tobin, a nurse at Chardon Provincial Center; a cousin, the Rev. Paul Tobin, pastor of Assumption Parish in Geneva; other relatives including nieces and nephews; and the congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame with whom she shared her life for 68 years.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Judd and Isabel Thompson; and brothers, Leo, James and Thomas Tobin.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 12 at Notre Dame Educational Center, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Provincial Center Grounds.
