Joseph G. Maynard
Joseph G. Maynard, 78, of Hinckley Township, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Medina. He was born March 5, 1923, in Kentucky and was a Medina County resident since 1964. He was an ink proofer for American National Can for 37 years. Mr. Maynard enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and his beagles. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Maynard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mabel (nee Domincik); sons, Ralph T. (Gloria) Maynard of California and Richard J. (Susan) Maynard of Minnesota; daughters, Rose M. (Robert) McGuire of Cleveland and Rita A. Blough (fiancé Jim Miktuk) of Medina; sister, Tennie Leslie of Cleveland; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Donald O. Walling
Donald O. Walling, 85, of Medina, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Ohio Pythian Sisters Home in Medina following a short illness. He was born in Salomina, Ind., and moved to Medina County in the early 1940s, where he and his wife owned and operated a dairy farm for many years. He used to manage and play baseball at the former Abbeyville Ballfield. Mr. Walling was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Valley City. He and his wife were part of the first team of couples involved in starting the tape ministry for the church. Mr. Walling enjoyed following the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and boxing. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gertrude (nee Roth); son, Jim Walling of Brunswick; daughter, Nancy Walling of Medina; grandsons, Brent and Jason Walling; sister, Norma Moehle of Medina; and brother, Elmer Walling Jr. of Middleburg Heights. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mayme Walling; sister, Lucille Sontos; and brother, Robert Walling. Jack B. Able
Jack B. Able, 78, of Lodi, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2001, at home following a period of declining health. He was born in Akron, where he lived most of his life before moving to Lodi 10 years ago. Mr. Able was a graduate of Green High School and the University of Akron. He was an accountant for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron for 44 years. Mr. Able was a member of Lodi United Methodist Church and former member of Lodi Ruritan Club. He was a volunteer for United Way and former Boy Scout leader. He was active in Scouting for 50 years. Mr. Able is survived by his stepson, Jim (Kathleen) Hastings of Litchfield Township; stepdaughter, Jane (Joe) Notch of Massillon; stepgrandchildren and caregivers, Tom and Melissa Smithberger of Lodi; a number of stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and close friend, Daisy Barker of Lodi. Jane E. Benford
Jane E. Benford, 83, of Wadsworth, passed away Friday, March 16, 2001. She was born Feb. 25, 1918, in Cleveland to Emil and Mayme Spirek. Mrs. Benford was raised and lived more than half her life in Spencer. She was a Wadsworth resident since 1968. She was a beloved and successful wife, mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed by her family. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, Reynold "Bennie" Benford; son and daughter-in-law, William and Paula Benford of Calabasas, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Cathryn and Dallen Botdorf of Orrville; and grandchildren, Brad and Amy Botdorf, and Michael Benford. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Raymond Spirek; and two infant sons. There will be a memorial service at a later date. Myrtle V. Christy
Myrtle Viola Christy, 86, of Medina, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2001, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Rittman, where she resided for the last nine months. She was born June 7, 1914, in New Effington, S.D., to Benjamin Franklin and Josephine Borgen Harn and grew up in Veblen, S.D. She later lived in Spokane, Wash., and moved to the Medina area in 1947. Mrs. Christy was a homemaker and enjoyed returning to South Dakota annually. She is survived by her husband, Gaylord, whom she married on Oct. 31, 1946, in Sand Point, Idaho; brothers, Elmer Harn of Reno, Nev., and Ervin (Evelyn) Harn of Vale, Ore.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Stevens and Caroline Olsen, and brothers, Ernest, Clifford and Benjamin Harn. Ronald K. Crawford
Ronald K. Crawford, 54, of Spencer, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Lodi Community Hospital. He was born March 26, 1946, in Gastonia, Ga., and was a Medina County resident for three months, formerly of Old Brooklyn, a Cleveland suburb. Mr. Crawford was employed as a line coordinator with Ford Motor Co., Cleveland. He was a member of the National Pool League, Southwest Eight Ball League and the Regional Pigeon Association. Mr. Crawford served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Tammie M. Cheryl A. Mikalacki
Cheryl Ann (nee Boone) Mikalacki, 40, of Greenwich, Ohio, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at the Hospice of Visiting Nurse Center in Copley after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Cleveland and resided there until moving to Medina County in 1976. She then moved to Greenwich in 1994. Mrs. Mikalacki graduated from Medina County JVS in 1978, where she studied animal care. She was a member of FFA. A couple of years later, she graduated with an associate's degree from the OSU branch at ATI in Wooster. She was a waitress for 12 years at Rustic Inn, Medina. Mrs. Mikalacki enjoyed creative craft making of all kinds, gardening, antiques and had an avid love of reading and animals. She will be remembered by many for her loving and gentle personality. Mrs. Mikalacki is survived by her husband, John, whom she married on June 18, 1994; daughters, Rebeka Lynn, 41/2, and Rachael, 21/2, both at home; parents, Ron and Theresa (nee Krupar) of York Township; brother, Allen (Cherine) Boone, of Suwanee, Ga.; in-laws, Jean and Ed Violett of Litchfield Township and John G. Lois E. Scott
Lois E. Scott, 87, of Lodi, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Smithville Western Care Center in Wooster, where she had resided the past six months. She was born March 30, 1913, in the Methodist parsonage in Ashley, Ohio, to the Rev. Charles and Josephine Howard Cole. She was a graduate of North Fairfield High School. Mrs. Scott received her teaching certificate from Ohio University and taught elementary school for several years in North Fairfield, Plymouth and Lodi. She and her husband owned and operated Scott & Sons IGA in Lodi from 1938 to 1961. They later joined with Ray and Verna Turk in 1959 to build and operate Strike & Spare Lanes in Lodi. Mrs. Scott was a member of Lodi United Methodist Church and Lodi Chapter 137 Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years, where she was past matron. She loved her family and friends. Mrs. Scott is survived by her sons, Chuck (Pat) Scott of Brentwood, Tenn., Larry (Irene) Scott of Westfield Center and Tom (Bonnie) Scott of Medina; grandchildren, Jo (Richard) Drumright of Brentwood, Jim (Val) Scott of Anderson, Ind., Barb (Brad) Dawson of Medina, Pam (Steve) Bredemeier of Bexley, Ohio, David (Colleen) Scott of Hilliard, Brian (Sandy) Scott of Mason, Ohio, and Sue (Bo) Thompson of Medina; and great-grandchildren, Will, Rachel, Taylor, Zach, Jeremy, Curtis, Joy, Ethan, Henry, Annie and Casey. Wade W. Hovater
Wade W. Hovater, 84, of Chatham Township, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Lodi Community Hospital. He was born Aug. 18, 1916, in Tuscumbia, Ala., and was a Medina County resident for 46 years. Mr. Hovater was employed as a dock worker for Anderson Motor Service and was a security guard for RPM for 13 years. He was a loving grandfather and enjoyed gardening and fishing. Mr. Hovater served in the Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Essie Hovater (nee Phillips) of Chatham; daughter, Janice (Michael) Mangan of Chatham; and grandchildren, Mackenze, Shane and Erin Mangan. Wanda M. Reich
Wanda M. Reich, 86, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Magnolia Care & Rehabilitation Center in Wadsworth after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Reich was born in Medina and resided in Sharon Center most of her life. She was a member of Medina Fraternal Order of Eagles 2224. She was a cook at Otto's Grotto and formerly a waitress at Medina Eagles. Mrs. Reich enjoyed cards and bingo. Nadine Uziel (nee Ostasevich), 83, passed away Friday, March 16, 2001. Douglas Lee Van Wie, 33, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Monday, March 19, 2001. He was a native of Hinckley Township and an avid runner, competing in the Revco Marathon in 1992. He was Catholic by faith and an Army veteran, having served with the 10th Mountain Division during the Persian Gulf War. Mr. Van Wie is survived by his mother, Ruth M. Devlin of Virginia Beach; stepfather, Stephen Devlin of Virginia Beach; brother, Lawrence Leroy Van Wie of Cleveland; maternal grandparents, Vincent and Gertrude Sittnick of Virginia Beach; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and gardening. Mr. Anthony was a foreman/supervisor for Permold Co., Medina. He is survived by his wife, Ruby L. Anthony (nee Roberson), to whom he was married 62 years; sons, Edward L. Anthony and Harry W. Hilda B. Cross
Hilda B. Cross, 93, of Medina, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Medina General Hospital. She was born in Cadiz, Ohio, and was a Medina County resident for six years, formerly of Coshocton. She was a member of Presbyterian Church in Coshocton, where she enjoyed playing in the hand bell choir. She was an avid bridge player and lifelong Cleveland Indians fan. Mrs. Cross worked for the Cleveland and Coshocton public libraries and was secretary for the board of trustees of the Coshocton library. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Cross of Columbus and Judith Cross of Medina; son and daughters-in-law, Leslie and Norma Cross Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and John and Toni Cross of Westerville; Brenda Wiseman, who was like a daughter; granddaughter, Martha; great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Leslie Ann; and six nephews. Freda J.M. Dague, 83, of Wooster, formerly of Lodi, passed away Friday, March 23, 2001, at Westview Manor in Wooster following a short illness. She was born Feb. 5, 1918, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Howard J. and Lois Ayling Mosier. She married Archer Dague on Feb. 11, 1940, in Lodi and resided there before moving to Wooster last year. Mrs. Dague was employed at the Bailey Mfg. Co. in Lodi, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Crawford Corners Grace United Methodist Church, longtime member of Harrisville Grange and Lodi Hospital Auxiliary. She was a founding board member of Lodi Library and also was a member of Lodi Historical Society and Lodi Saddle Club. She is survived by her daughters, Diana Lucas (friend, Gordon Makley) of Macedonia and Mrs. Paul (Margo Suzann) Stafford of Wooster; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Margaret) Brubaker and Mrs. Nobel (Virginia) Hitchcock, both of Wooster; brothers, Ivan (Vivian) Mosier of Big Prairie, Ohio, and Patrick (Carolyn) Mosier of Smithville. She was born March 29, 1916, in Akron to John and Elizabeth (Baker) Neidert and lived most of her life in Seville. She graduated from Seville High School in 1934. She and her husband owned and operated Pat's Market in Seville for 26 years and retired in 1969. She was a member of Seville United Methodist Church and Guilford Grange for more than 50 years. She was historian of Seville High School Alumni Association and was very active in the Seville Historical Society. She was named Sevillian of the Year in 1995. Mrs. Dempsey is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Zsilli and Mrs. Al (Eva) Mocher, both of Wadsworth, and Mrs. Clifford (Mary) Fisher of Wooster, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Pat" Dempsey, in 1985, and brother, John Neidert, in 1970. Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Seville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Philip N. Delores C. Neimeyer (nee Kotch), 74, of Medina, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 23, 2001, at Evergreen Care Center in Medina. Melvin G. Shirey
Melvin G. Shirey, 79, formerly of Medina, died Saturday morning, March 24, 2001, at Altercare of Wadsworth. He was born March 13, 1922, in Emlinton, Pa., to Grover and Mabel (Potts) Shirey and lived in Medina before moving to Rittman in 1981. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a detective on the Medina Police Department, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Medina Eagles. Raymond E. Whitacre
Raymond E. Whitacre, 77, of Lodi, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Medina General Hospital. He was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Shelbyville, Ind., to Roy and Anna (Baughman) Whitacre. He married Diane James on Feb. 15, 1986. He was a woodworker all his life. He was a member of First Congregational Church in Lodi and loved airplanes. He was a longtime supporter of the National Rifle Association.
