Linda E. Shaffer, 44, of Brunswick, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at University Hospitals. She was born Sept. 13, 1956, in Cleveland and was a Brunswick resident for 27 years. Ms. Shaffer was the office manager at Life Care Center of Medina. Nettie R. Coreno (nee Meador), 63, of Montville Township, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at her home. She was born in Tupelo, Miss., on Aug. 23, 1937, and was a Medina County resident for 30 years. Mrs. Coreno was a homemaker. She loved gardening and sewing and enjoyed classical music. She is survived by her husband, Joseph, of Montville, whom she married on Aug. 26, 1961; daughters, Susan (Michael) Carpenter of Medina and Kendra and Caroline Coreno, both of Montville; son, Michael of Montville; brother, Michael Meador of Guys, Tenn.; sister, Linda Humphrey of Guys; and her loving grandchildren, Adam and Ashleigh Carpenter. Joseph J. Gurmo III, 56, of Brunswick, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Marymount. He was born Oct. 17, 1944, in New York. Mr. Gurmo was employed as a tattoo artist. He enjoyed motorcycles. Mr. Gurmo was a Green Beret in the Army. He is survived by his sons, Joseph J. Gurmo IV of Brunswick and Nicholas J. Donald R. Smith, 48, of Medina, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Oberlin Hospital. He was born Aug. 22, 1952, in Medina to Felix and Edith Smith and was a lifetime resident of Medina County. Mr. Smith loved fishing, hunting and golfing. He is survived by his mother, Edith Smith of Medina; son, Isaac (Karen) Smith of Medina; daughter, Crystal (Jason) Claycomb of Medina; grandchildren, Jalen, Marshall, Cole, Autumn and Krystal; brothers, Joe (Virginia) Smith of Medina and Mickey (Jackie) Smith of Greenford, Ohio; and sisters, Jane Whitlam of Naples, Fla., and Joanie (Don) Wahl of Orange Park, Fla. Donald E. Foradori, 61, of Westfield Center, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Lodi Community Hospital. He was born in Brockport, Pa., and was a Medina County resident for 30 years. He was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, where he served as the president of the First Mission Council. He was a graduate of Penn State University and received his master's of business administration degree from Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Foradori was the capacity planning manager for Marconi Global Services of North Ridgeville. He served in the Marine Corps. Donald ran in two Revco marathons and loved being involved in his children's sporting events. He loved his family, researching their family history and also his Dalmatian, Hannibal. LaVerne A. Fruits (nee Betke), 70, of Hinckley Township, passed away Friday, April 13, 2001, at Medina General Hospital, after a courageous acceptance and endurance of a disease that took much of her loved active life away. She was born in Cleveland and was a Medina County resident for 50 years. She loved bingo and to drive and travel. She enjoyed bowling and golf. She coached and played in a women's softball league and was a volunteer for the Red Cross bloodmobile. She loved her 13 years as a switchboard operator and bookkeeper for Automatic Sprinkler Co. of Broadview Heights. She was the loving mother of Dale (Bonnie) Fruits and Lynne (Phil) Nawalaniec, both of Hinckley, and the dear grandmother of Bobby Fruits and Nathan and Kyle Nawalaniec, whom she truly loved and enjoyed. James B. Smyth, 87, of Homosassa Springs, Fla., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Crystal River Health Care Center in Florida. He was born in Cleveland and lived in Litchfield for many years before moving to Florida 25 years ago. He was a former member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Medina. Mr. Smyth was a retired millwright with Ford Motor Co., Brook Park, and he also was a farmer. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Crystal River, Fla., Knights of Columbus All Saints Council 6954 3rd degree and past grand knight, 4th degree, and a member of the St. Francis Cardinal Spellman Assembly 1547. He is survived by his wife, Dolores (nee Bihn) Smyth of Homosassa Springs; son, James F. Smyth of Edgewood, N.M.; daughters, Betty Stiles of Medina, Jane Phillips of Turtletown, Tenn., and Janet Ptak of Broadview Heights; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Ruth L. Patterson, 95, of Lodi, formerly of Cora, W.Va., departed this life for her heavenly home on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Medina General Hospital. She resided with her granddaughter and her husband, Linda and Richard Sampsell. Mrs. Patterson was cherished and affectionately called "Grandma" by a number of local residents spanning a period of 37 years. She will be sorely missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Ribble of Austin, Texas, Virginia (Williard) Lynn of Willoughby, Ruth (Joe) Cocimano of Annapolis, Md., and Betty (Ralph) Hagedorn of Naples, Fla.; sons, Joe (Jewel) Patterson of Joliet, Ill., Frank Patterson of Cora and Charles Patterson of Whitman, W.Va.; half sister, Sally Olivas of Lake Forest, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. He was an artist, well-known for his watercolor paintings, many of which hang in businesses in the Loudonville area. Elizabeth Marie Danes (nee Papuga), 91, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Medina General Hospital. She was born May 16, 1909, in Cleveland to Stanley and Maryjana (nee Kopec). Mrs. Danes retired from Richman Bros., where she worked for many years. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to do all kinds of handiwork, crafts and flower gardening. Her baking was legendary! Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren looked up to her as a role model and learned much from her. She will be missed very much, but will always be in our hearts. Charles Masters
Charles "Brian" Masters, 38, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, as a result of a car accident. Brian put all his energy into endeavors, which involved his trust in God, his family, friends and work. Brian was employed as vice president of retail for Lighthouse Products, where he found admiration and satisfaction from many dear friends and coworkers. He brightened and strengthened all those he came in contact with. Brian was happiest when those he loved were safe and happy. He found comfort and joy in many dear close relatives. John J. Rohrer
John J. Rohrer, 83, of Seville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 19, 2001. He was born on June 17, 1917, in Seville and was a lifetime Medina County resident. Mr. Rohrer was retired from Key Bank, Medina, and was formerly employed at Smith Dairy in Orrville and Borden Dairy in Akron. He also had his own milk route at one time. Mr. Rohrer was a member of United Church of Christ in Medina and enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rohrer (nee Dailey), to whom he was married 50 years; and their chosen family, Gloria Jean Forste, Naome and Dwaine Carter of Lodi; grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob, and Nathan Carter; and several cousins. Lois K. Simmerman
Lois K. Simmerman, 88, of Spencer, passed away Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Ohio Pythian Home in Medina, where she resided the past four years. She was born on May 30, 1912, in Chatham Township to George and Blanche Robinson Zeigler, and lived in River Corners for 52 years. Mrs. Simmerman was a receptionist and clerk for Dr. Reutter in Medina. She later worked at the Medina County Health Department for 20 years before retiring in the mid 1970s. Mrs. Simmerman was a graduate of Spencer High School and a member of Spencer Pythian Sisters, Spencer Senior Citizens and Spencer United Methodist Church. She was born Jan. 1, 1932, in Barberton to Eldoris and Louise (Bergdorf) Collins and made her home in Creston for the past 50 years. She was the salutatorian at Seville High School in 1949. Mrs. Allen worked for 27 years at the Creston Library, retiring as the branch's head librarian in 2000. She was an active member of Creston Presbyterian Church, Women's Association, Creston Friends of the Library, and Creston Book and Music Club. She was active in the Creston community and in 1992, was honored as Creston Citizen of the Year. Mrs. Allen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Richard G. Allen, whom she married on Jan. 7, 1950; sons, Andrew Allen and Lee (Melinda) Allen, both of Seville, Daniel (Marj) Allen and Scott (Jill) Allen, both of Wooster, Ben (Penny) Allen of Creston and George (Gretchen) Allen of Wadsworth; and grandchildren, Becky, Joe, Tad, Cathlin, Kenneth, Charles, Christopher, Jeremy, Leslie, Michael, Sara, Jackie, Sam and Susanna. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Louise, in 1966, and grandson, Jonathan, in 1997. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Creston Presbyterian Church. The Rev. James McCurdy will officiate. Interment: Jackson Cemetery. Visiting hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Murray Funeral Home, 173 S. Main St., Creston. Ralph V. Barnett
Ralph V. Barnett, 85, of Wadsworth, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Saxton, Pa., and resided in Wadsworth for the past 54 years. Mr. Barnett was employed as a stationary engineer at Goodyear, retiring in 1981 with 71/2 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, VFW Post 1089, American Legion Post 170 and the Cribbage and Bridge clubs at the Center for Older Adults. Mr. Barnett was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pauline H.; daughter and son-in-law, Judi and Mike Esterle; grandsons, Keith and Kurt (Jennifer), both of Akron; and brother, Charles of Martinsburg, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Hilliard & Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth. The Rev. Jonathan A. Knight will officiate. Theda M. Clevenger
Theda Marie Clevenger, 72, of Brunswick Hills Township, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights. She was born Nov. 7, 1928, in Mt. Holly, N.C. Mrs. Clevenger was employed as a packer for the nut and bolt division at Republic Steel for 23 years. She is survived by her sons, Burnett (Barbara) of Brunswick Hills and Jeffrey (Catherine) of Valley City; daughters, Patricia (Emmett) Taylor, Kimberly (William) Barnes and Tammy (Rick) Barr, all of Brunswick Hills; grandchildren, Lori, Jeffrey, Chrissy, Traci, Christopher, Jenni, Stephanie, Tiffany, Jesse and Nina; and great-grandchildren, Jimmy Henry and Jakob Barr. She was the beloved aunt of Pam, Samuel "Skip," Marty and Tammy. Mrs. Clevenger was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Burnette, and sister, Jackie Johnson. Memorial service: 8 p.m. today at Carlson, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, 1642 Pearl Road (one-half mile south of state Route 303), Brunswick. The Rev. Dr. Richard Powers will officiate.
