Kenneth Robert Fites, 83, died Sunday, April 29, 2001. He was born in Summit County and served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Fites worked as a truck driver for the Ohio Turnpike and the Arizona State Highway Department. He was a resident of Athens, Texas, since 1980. He is survived by his daughters, Margaret Dunbar of Medina and Dorothy Mains of Athens, Texas; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Shaffer of Apple Creek; and sister-in-law, JoAnn Mercer of Creston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lettie Ruth Richardson, and sons, Ken and Robert Fites. Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road. The Rev. Russell W. Drena Heaton
Drena "Alexandrina" Heaton, 76, of Cleveland, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2001, in Beckley, W.Va. She was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, and came to the United States in 1945. She resided in Missouri prior to moving to Cleveland in 1956. Mrs. Heaton was a homemaker and a very active volunteer with the West Side Ecumenical Ministry and West Side Catholic Center, both in Cleveland. She was a volunteer in many ways at the Valley City VFW Post 5563. She is survived by her children, Leon (Mickey) Heaton of Valley City, David (Lynn) Heaton of West Virginia, Alexandrina "Ann" (Robbie) Kozlowski of California, Linda "Gail" (Arnold) Hill of West Virginia; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Agnes and Isa, both of Scotland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon L. Heaton, in 2000; brother, Jim; and sister, Maggie. Service: 10 a.m. Saturday at Bauer Funeral Home, 2089 Columbia Road, Valley City. May E. Hege
May Ellen Hege (nee Baker), 75, of Sharon Township, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Akron General Medical Center after a two-month illness. Mrs. Hege was born in Findlay and resided in Sharon Township most of her married life. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1948. An English teacher for 30 years, she retired from the Highland school system in 1986 and previously taught in Chatham and Wadsworth. Mrs. Hege was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and chapter 102 Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed quilting, reading and traveling. Mrs. Hege is survived by her husband of 52 years, Joseph; daughter, Kathy Shaw of Sharon; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Carolyn of Sharon; seven grandchildren; and sister, Betty Baker of Bedford. James F. McGonnell
James F. McGonnell, 76, of Lodi, passed away Monday, April 30, 2001, at Fairview Hospital following a short illness. He was born July 31, 1924, in Youngstown to James P. McGonnell and Anna Craver. He lived in the Lodi area for 50 years. Mr. McGonnell was a truck driver for Commercial Motor Freight in Akron for more than 35 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Cuyahoga Falls 2207, and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 47, Cleveland. Mr. McGonnell was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Marge; son, Jim (Susan) McGonnell of Findlay; granddaughters, Courtney and Taylor; stepmother, Blanche Bradley of Tallmadge; and sisters, Mrs. Jim (Joyce) Maholtz of Girard, Ohio, and Betty Craver of Lakewood. Henry L. Metzger
Henry L. Metzger, Ph.D., 81, of Sharon Township, formerly of New Philadelphia, has passed away. He served as president of the Hillier Family Foundation. Mr. Metzger is survived by his wife, the former Geraldine D. Sheridan, and many close friends. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel at The Oaks at Medina. Cathleen Ann Nicklas, 37, of Litchfield Township, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2001, at University Hospital and her infant son, Vincent Michael Nicklas, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Medina General Hospital. Cathleen was born Sept. 23, 1963, in Cleveland. She was a Medina County resident since October 2000. She was a registered nurse at Medina General Hospital and a homemaker. Mrs. Nicklas served in the Air Force. They are survived by their husband and father, David A. Nicklas; son and brother, Benjamin Nicklas; parents and grandparents, Gary and Charlotte Santos; and sister and aunt, Barbara Hagler of Brunswick. David P. Quinn Sr.
David Patrick Quinn Sr., 72, of Brunswick, passed away Monday, April 30, 2001, at his residence. He was born March 17, 1929, in Turtle Creek, Pa., and was a Brunswick resident for 40 years. He was a machine operator for General Motors (Terex Division). Mr. Quinn was a former member of Brunswick Eagles 3505, former member of the United Auto Workers and former Brunswick school bus driver. He served in the Army and enjoyed camping and fishing. He is survived by his son, David (Sherry) Quinn Jr. of Medina; daughters, Deborah (Timothy) Korte and Darlene Coleman, both of Medina; sisters, Renee Ballas, Rose Ollis and Dorothy Quinn; grandchildren, Shawn Korte, Kenneth Coleman, Tracy Coleman, Jason Coleman, Michael Korte and Sarah Korte; and great-grandchildren, Avonlea and Andre. Wilma G. Vickers
Wilma G. Vickers, 92, of Peoria, Ariz., formerly of Findlay, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Arizona. She was born Dec. 31, 1908, in Chandlersville, Ohio, the daughter of Pearl Clifford and Evarett (Mansperger) Herron. Mrs. Vickers moved to Arizona seven years ago after retiring in 1973 from Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, where she was a dietary assistant. She was a member of United Church of Sun City, Ariz. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Robert and Mary Vickers of Santa Fe, N.M., Donald and Libby Vickers of Spencer and James and Shelly Vickers of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Robert Constein of Findlay and JoAnn Condi of Sun City; daughters-in-law, Charlotte Vickers of Lakeside and Theda Vickers of Sun City; 26 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Richard E. Herron of Venice, Fla.; and sisters, Nellie Kandel of Findlay and Dorothy Graves of Clearwater, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer Vickers, on July 13, 1968; daughters, Eleanor Frances Vickers, on Dec. 26, 1932; and sons, Marion G. Vickers, on May 26, 1994, and Richard H. Robert G. Weiler
Robert G. Weiler, 75, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Fremont, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers. Mr. Weiler was born May 20, 1925, in Lindsey, Ohio, to Frank Weiler and Eva Keck. Mr. Weiler graduated from Ross High in 1943 and received his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University in 1950. He was a registered architect with the state of Ohio since 1952. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Fremont. He was an ensign in the Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Weiler was a member of Ensign Club, Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, Fremont Country Club, Fremont Outing Club, Brainard Masonic Lodge, Zenobia Shrine, Hayes Heritage Club, Sigma Chi fraternity and Ohio Contractors Hall of Fame. He was past director of Industrial Savings & Loan, past director of Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce, past trustee of Sandusky County YMCA, trustee at Findlay College and past chairman of Ohio Contractors Labor Relations Committee. Mr. Weiler was the former president and chairman of the board of directors of WMOG Inc., which is the holding company of Mosser Construction Inc., where he was past president and former chairman of the board of directors, and Contractors Equipment Rentals Inc., where he was former chairman of the board of directors and past president. He was a partner of Findlay's Tall Timbers Distribution Center, Ohio Logistics Ltd. and chairman of Weiler Limited Partnership. Mr. Weiler retired from Mosser Construction Inc. in 1995. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (nee Strong), whom he married on Nov. 1, 1996; sons, Robert Weiler of Medina and David Weiler of Nashville, Tenn.; sister, Evelyn Hampshire of Fremont; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Boyer, and brother, Frank. Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lowell Peterson will officiate. Wallace E. Bixby Jr., 76, of Medina, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Ohio Pythian Sisters Home of Medina. He was born on Sept. 11, 1924, in Berea and was formerly of Lakewood. Mr. Bixby was a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Art (1950s) and a co-founder of the Cleveland Traditional Jazz Society. Mr. Bixby worked as a graphic artist in Cleveland for many years and spent his retirement in Medina to be close to his brother and family. He was a major fan of jazz music and photographed many jazz stars, such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Gene Krupa, who performed in Cleveland clubs in the 1950s. Mr. Bixby later donated those photos to the Cleveland Public Library. He had exhibits of his work at the Medina County District Library and Tri-C Metro. He continued his art in retirement and was honored by the Medina Post Office in 1996 with their choosing of his design for the cancellation stamp for the U.S. Postal Service commemorating "Great Band Leaders." Mr. Bixby also was a part-time cartoonist. He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He is survived by his brother, James A. Bixby of Medina; nephews, Jeff Bixby of Cincinnati, David Bixby of Derwood, Md., and Bruce Bixby of Dalton, Pa.; and nieces, Jody Doyle of Defiance, Nancy Jones of Dalton and Laura Bogdanski of Medina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace E. and Marie Bixby, and brother, Leon. Private family services will be held. Burial: Lakewood Park Cemetery. George O. Hutton
George O. Hutton, 74, of Chippewa Lake, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Medina County Home. He was born on May 20, 1926, in Cedar Grove, W.Va., to Noah and Jessie (nee Hackney) Hutton. Mr. Hutton was retired from Chevrolet after 26 years of service. He was a member of Triangle Baptist Church in Chippewa Lake. Mr. Hutton is survived by his stepson, Jim (Della) Watkins of Cleveland, and brother, Jack (Vivian) Hutton of West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline (nee Wallace); three brothers; and one sister. Service: 11 a.m. today at Triangle Baptist Church, Chippewa Lake. Stanley T. Wood
Stanley T. Wood, 80, of Medina, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Akron General Hospital. He was born on March 17, 1921, in Needham, Mass., and was a Medina County resident since 1958. Mr. Wood was a sales representative for the Stanley Works of Britain, Conn. He was an avid woodworker, furniture maker and golfer. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a Veteran of Foreign Wars. Family and friends will remember Stanley for his wit and humor. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy B. Stanley (nee Bergstrom) of Medina; sons, Fred Wood of Seminole, Fla., Peter (Patty) Wood of Fairlawn, Paul Wood of Biddeford, Maine, and Roger (Katie) Wood of Naperville, Ill.; and grandchildren, Eric, Carly, Kyle, Andy and Joey. Norman C. Biehl
Norman C. Biehl, 85, of Valley City, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Life Care Center of Medina. He was born in Cleveland and moved to Valley City in 1963. Mr. Biehl was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Valley City. He was a supervisor of the former George Worthington Hardware in Cleveland and worked security for the National Air Raid on the west side of Cleveland from 1940 to 1943. Mr. Biehl loved animals, stamp collecting, cooking and horticulture. He is survived by his wife, Mildred (nee Hoehn), whom he married on June 15, 1963; cousins, Aldine Hadsell of North Ridgeville and Florence Tomasallo of Cleveland; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wolff and Margaret Hibler, both of Valley City; brothers-in-law, Wally Hoehn and Richard Westlake, both of Brunswick; and many nieces and nephews. Mary A. Carver Buettner
Mary A. Carver Buettner, 90, of Medina, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Samaritan Care Center of Medina. She was born on Kelly's Island and resided in the South Euclid-Cleveland area prior to moving to Medina County in 1950. Mrs. Buettner lived most of her life in Medina County, except for six years in Taveres, Fla. She was a homemaker and member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Mrs. Buettner worked as a bookkeeper for her sons, Ken and Dick Carver, at the Tebbit's Beverage Store in Medina for many years. She is survived by her sons, Donald (Edna) Carver and Richard (Dianna) Carver, both of York Township, Norman (Elaine) Carver of Estes Park, Colo., Kenneth (Marilyn) Carver of Medina, David (Diane) Carver of Eustus, Fla., and Chris (Kristine) Carver of Medina; daughter-in-law, Sandy Carver of Lake Mary, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and sister, Julie Werkheiser of Florida. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 40 years, William Carver; son, William Carver Jr.; second husband, Louis Buettner; and brothers, Joseph Palco and John Palcho. Thelma O. Johnson
Thelma O. Johnson, 91, of Creston, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. She was born in West Virginia and moved to Litchfield Township in 1957. She lived there until moving to Creston in 1992. Mrs. Johnson worked at the Medina Laundry from 1958 to 1966. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and gardening. She is survived by her children, Cora Brown of Tennessee, Elsie Badgett of New Philadelphia, Myers Johnson of Hondo, Texas, and Jene Johnson of Creston; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Johnson, in 1991; son, Earl Johnson; and daughters, Lois, Shirley and Elva Johnson. Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bauer Funeral Home, 2089 Columbia Road, Valley City. The Rev. David Shimp will officiate. Burial: Litchfield Township Cemetery. Kathleen M. Mabry
Kathleen M. Mabry, 93, of Lodi, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Medina General Hospital. She was born in Reigate, England on Nov. 8, 1907, the daughter of Charles and Mary Hadley. She was raised in Cleveland, where she graduated from East Tech High School and later worked at Halle Bros. Department Store. Mrs. Mabry resided in Lodi since 1936, where she was a member of Lodi United Methodist Church, Lodi Community Hospital Auxiliary and was a former member of the Lodi-Cloverleaf school board for 14 years. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Richard (Mary) Raymond of Missouri; son, Charles (Ramona) Mabry of Lodi; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Henry Mabry, in 1969, and sister, Elsie Robeck. According to her wishes, cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lodi United Methodist Church, 320 Medina St. The Rev. David Howell of Lodi will officiate. Donald G. Metter
Donald G. Metter, 66, of Brunswick, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the Cleveland Clinic after a lengthy illness. He was born in Cleveland and was a Brunswick resident for 40 years. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, past grand knight and member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4847, Brunswick 3505 Eagles and social member of Brunswick VFW Post 9520. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, camping and loved his yard work. Mr. Metter was a custodian at Highland schools and Polaris JVS. He was a Brunswick Transit System driver and worked for Carlson Funeral Homes. In addition, he was a bus driver for Brunswick City Schools and a heavy equipment operator specialist at Terex. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carlotta (nee Pesek) of Brunswick; sister, Helen Kollmorgan of Cleveland; mother-in-law, Ethel Pesek of Cleveland; and brothers-in-law, Stanley Pesek of Salem, Va., Robert Pesek of Shelby Township, Mich., and Dennis Pesek of Cleveland. His extended families included the Butler and Szill families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helen Metter; sister, Helen Ballasch; and brother, Walter. Frank S. Zwolsky
Frank S. Zwolsky, 81, of Medina, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Medina General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in Palanka, Yugoslavia, and was a Medina County resident for 13 years, formerly of Cleveland. Mr. Zwolsky enjoyed gardening, reading, writing and his granddaughters. He was a tailor all his working life and worked in the men's clothing department of Halle Bros. Department Store in Cleveland until retiring in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anna (nee Fritz) of Medina; son, Donald (Louise) Zwolsky of Medina; and granddaughters, Jessica and Amanda. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Frances. Service: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Carlson Funeral Home, 3477 Medina Road (one-half mile west of Interstate 71), Medina. Burial: St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Medina. Visiting hours: 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
