Evelyn Bertine Bradley
ROOTSTOWN - Evelyn Bertine Bradley, 83, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Nov. 29, 1917, in Freedom Township, she was the daughter of James M. and Blanche (Slagle) McCormick. She had lived in Rootstown since 1940. Mrs. Bradley was a homemaker. Survivors include her sons, Randy of Rootstown and Ron (Barbara) of Rootstown; daughter, Phyllis Lowden of Randolph; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Raymond, died in 1983. Her sister, Norma Berg, died previously. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Homeland Cemetery in Rootstown, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna. Memorials may be made to the Rootstown Volunteer Fire Department or the Haven of Rest in Akron.

Luetta V. Goodrich
ROOTSTOWN - Luetta V. Goodrich, 61, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at home. Born Aug. 2, 1939, in Harrison County, W. Va., she was the daughter of Asbury F. and Lulu (Swager) Ash. She had lived in Newton Falls before moving to Rootstown in 1966. Mrs. Goodrich was a homemaker. Survivors include her sons, Howard "Vernon" (Millie) of Warren, Wesley (Christine) of Diamond, Michael (Bernice) of Freedom, Rodney (Lena) of Ft. Knox, Ky., Jeff (Michele) of Newton Falls and Thomas (Sherry) of Garrettsville; daughter, Kathy Williams of Newton Falls; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Howard W., died Dec. 29, 1993. Her parents; brothers, Albert and Arnold Ash; and sisters, Luella Hester and Junell Lyons, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. until noon services Tuesday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, with the Rev. Carl Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Windham Township Cemetery.

Hazel A. Lawless
SHALERSVILLE - Hazel A. Lawless, 87, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born March 18, 1914, in Freedom Township, she was the daughter of Will and May (Noble) Thorp. She had lived in Shalersville since 1952. Mrs. Lawless was a homemaker, and she was president of Crestwood Senior Citizens for 15 years. She also was a member of the Portage County Sheriff's Association, the Portage County Women's Democratic Association and the Town and Country Club. Survivors include her nephews, William Marris of Shalersville and Russell Marris of Ravenna, and nieces, Mrs. Charles (Mary Jane) Wellman of Braceville and Mrs. John (Elsie) Schuler of Farwell, Mich. Her husband, William E., died in 1983. Her sister, Ada Marris, and niece, Betty Lou Marris, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Frank Edward Wagner
Frank Edward Wagner, 59, of Ravenna died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at home. Born Jan. 6, 1942, in Ravenna, he was the son of Edward L. and Enabelle (Rentz) Wagner. He had lived in Kent before moving to Ravenna 26 years ago. Mr. Wagner was employed with Kent's water maintenance department for 15 years until he retired. Survivors include his wife, Darlene "Dee" (Von Stein); sons, Jon A. (Paula) of Hudson and Dr. James M. of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two granddaughters; brother, Don of Florida; and sister, Kathy Green of Florida. His parents died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Betty (Bigach) Klaco
BRIMFIELD - Betty (Bigach) Klaco, 71, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Akron City Hospital. Born April 2, 1930, in Barberton, she was the daughter of Louis and Catherine (Fitchko) Bigach. She had lived in Barberton and Akron before moving to Brimfield 31 years ago. Mrs. Klaco was a member of St. Peter of the Fields Catholic Church in Rootstown. Survivors include her husband, Victor L., to whom she was married 47 years; son, Victor S. and friend Betty Smith of Ravenna; daughter, Karen Klaco of Brimfield; sisters, Dorothy Nash of Ravenna and Stella Mesko of Akron; and sister-in-law, Patricia Dremak of Akron. Her brother, Steve Bigach, and sister, Steffie Kristich, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter of the Fields Catholic Church in Rootstown. Burial will be in St. Peter of the Fields Cemetery.

Robert D. Lattimer Sr.
ATWATER - Robert D. Lattimer Sr., 85, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at his home. Born March 25, 1916 in Sawyerwood, Ohio, he was the son of Charles W. and Mabel (Rhinesmith) Lattimer. Mr. Lattimer had worked at Mount Union College in Alliance, retiring in 1981. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was formerly an active member at First Baptist Church of Atwater. He was taught to play the guitar by "Grandpa" Jones and enjoyed playing music in the String Dusters Band for various Portage and Stark County nursing homes. Survivors include his wife, Sherry D. "Charlene" (Arnette), to whom he was married for 54 years; sons, Robert D. (Jeannie) of Ravenna, Mark D. (Kristen) of Rootstown and Randy D. (Denise) of Millen, Ga.; daughter, Christy L. (Alan) Cole of Atwater; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Jack E. of Bellevue; and sister, Jennie I. (Ervin) Arp of Bellevue. A grandson, Christopher A. Peterka; great-grandson, Mark N. Lattimer; brothers, Willis, Francis and Richard; and sisters, Marion Lattimer and Ruth Harris, all died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the Rev. William C. Moritz
William C. Moritz, 78, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Sunday, April 1, 2002. Born Jan. 21, 1923 in Cleveland, he was the son of William and Helen Moritz. Mr. Moritz served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China Burma India theatre. He graduated from Kent State University and earned a masters at Western Reserve University majoring in school administration and guidance counseling. He also attended Bowling Green and the University of Toledo. He was awarded five fellowships by IDEA of the Kettering Foundation for Advanced Study of Education Curriculum and Administration. He also served on several committees at the Ohio Department of Education and served as a consultant to improve classroom teaching for more than 50 school districts. During his 38-year career as an educator, he served as a teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal at Madison High School; director of vocational guidance at John Marshall High School in Cleveland, where he also coached five championship football teams, including a city championship. He went on to the post of assistant principal at John Adams High School and principal of West Geauga High School He served as the assistant superintendent of the Maumee school district and retired in 1978. During his retirement, he worked as an assistant professor at Heidelberg College as well as guest lecturer at Bowling Green and the University of Toledo. He also enjoyed officiating high school and college basketball for 20 years and football for 10 years. He enjoyed following his children and grandchildren their activities. He also enjoyed golf and was a member for many years at Riverby Hills Golf Course, winning the club championship in 1975. He also was an avid tennis player and traveled to numerous CBI, high school and coaching reunions throughout his retirement. Recently, he continued to research, write and advise of the topic of restructuring the United States educational system. Survivors include his sons, William C. II and James R.; daughters, Elaine Nickoli, Debra, Suzanne (Dennis) Witherell and Mary; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife, Elsie, died previously. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Broadway St., Maumee. Maison Dardenne Walk Funeral Home in Maumee is handling arrangements.

Therman E. Hoover
PARIS - Therman E. Hoover, 82, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at his daughter's home in Warren Township. Born May 14, 1918, in Buckhannon, W.Va., he was the son of Emery and Anna May (Cutwright) Hoover. He lived in Ravenna before moving to Paris Township in 1969. Mr. Hoover retired as a crane operator at Republic Steel, where he had worked for 25 years. He also worked for Burns Security for 10 years. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Newton Falls. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his daughter, Carol (Paul) Ranc of Warren Township; stepdaughters, Peggy (Ronnie) Burr of Leavittsburg and Patty (Fred) Neatrour of Champion; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brother, Virgil of Leavittsburg; and sisters, Mable (James) Ritter of Leavittsburg and Tilly (Curtis) Yauger of Uniontown, Pa.; and friend, Mary Waris of Paris. His first wife, Dorothy Whiltock, whom he married in 1936, died in 1973. His second wife, Millie Carpenter died in 1984. A daughter, Sheila M. Pearce; brothers, Wetzel and Columbus; and sister, Wilma, died previously. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Newton Falls. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by James Funeral Home in Newton Falls.

Margaret Lucille Rhodes
Former Kent resident Margaret Lucille Rhodes, 88, of Waterloo Road, Mogadore, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Akron City Hospital in Akron. Born November 12,1912, in Fremont, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Letha May (Taylor) Shriver. She had been a Kent resident for 60 years. Mrs. Rhodes worked at Lamb Electric on the armature line. During World War II, she assembled bombs at the Ravenna Arsenal. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Kent and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Survivors include her brother, Harry L. Shriver of Suffield; sisters, Gertrude Mayfield of Suffield and Dawn Fryberger of Brimfield. Her husband, Howard R., died in 1981. Her brothers, Frank and Jim Shriver; sisters, Letha Wendt, Eve Ickes and Ruth Keefer, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Kent, with the Rev. Reid Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Stow Cemetery. Jacqueline Marie Peterson
Former Record-Courier reporter Jacqueline Marie Peterson, 58, of Dover Location, Osceola Township, Mich., died of cancer Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center, where she was admitted March 4. Born Jan. 1, 1943 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Walter and Margaret Korniet. She was a 1961 graduate of James Ford Rhodes High School in Cleveland. Mrs. Peterson studied journalism at Kent State University and began her career as a journalist at the Neenah-Menasha Daily Northwestern in Neenah, Wis. While employed by the Record-Courier from 1969 to 1973 she was known professionally as Jacqueline Seton. She covered the city of Ravenna and the courts. "Jackie was a talented and hard-working writer, who covered her assignments effectively," said R-C Publisher David Dix, who added that she was especially helpful with coverage of the turmoil at Kent State University during that period. She moved to Copper County, Mich., in 1980 to join the staff of the Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton, where she later becoming a managing editor. While working for the Gazette, she taught journalism at Suomi College for one year. Mrs. Peterson started Keweenaw Kennel, a dog and cat boarding facility, in 1987 and resigned from the Gazette in 1991 to devote herself full-time to the business. While operating her business, she also worked for two weekly newspapers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Survivors include her husband, Carl, whom she married Aug. 24, 1991; father, Walter Korniet; sister, Sandra Loucka of Salem, Ore.; stepson, Kevin of Calumet, Mich.; and stepdaughters, Deborah (Ivan) Smith of Henryville, Pa., Cynthia (Steve) Williams of Ontonagon, Mich. and Marianne of Calumet. Her mother and a sister, Shirley, died previously. Services will be held today at Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, Mich. Cremation will take place, with private burial at a later date.

Marian Louise Suffecool
Marian Louise Suffecool, 85, formerly of Wayland, died April 1, 2001, at Beverly Health Care in Lakeland, Fla. Born June 19, 1915, in Dover, she was the daughter of Joseph and Nioma (Powell) Beutler. She had lived in Florida since 1964. She and her husband, Robert W. Suffecool Sr., owned and operated the R.W. Suffecool & Son Basket Co. in Wayland from 1940 to 1964. She was a homemaker and self-employed seamstress, working on small items until a few weeks prior to her death. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lakeland, Palmy Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Deerfield and Paris Fire Bells. Survivors include her son, Robert W. Jr. of Wayland; daughters, Carol S. Campbell and Mrs. Carl (Janet) S. Wyrosdick, both of Lakeland; four grandchilren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth Corbett of Palmyra and Mrs. Merle (Ruth) Strong of Madison, Wis. Her husband, Robert W. Sr., whom she married Sept. 18, 1937, died March 18, 1989. Three brothers, Howard, Charles and Joseph Beutler, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at James Funeral Home, 8 E. Broad St., Newton Falls. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wayland Community Church. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery in Paris. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Lakeland, Fla.

Mildred A. Strawman, 89
FREEDOM - Mildred A. Strawman, 89, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Laurie Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls. Born Oct. 14, 1911, in Hiram Township, she was a daugher of Neal and Laurel (Rathbun) Peppeard. She was a life resident of Freedom. Mrs. Strawman taught elementary school in Freedom and Windham and tutored many students in her home. She was a member of the Ravenna Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday School for many years and conducted Bible study classes in her home. She hosted many missionary families over the years. She was active in the church's Bandage Rolling Mission Project for seniors. Mrs. Strawman was historian of the Freedom Alumni Association and the Garrettsville Historical Society. She was a creative seamstress and enjoyed cooking andcanning. Survivors include her son, David of Thailand; daughters, Barbara Grafton of Freedom and Patricia Mihailov of Guys Mills, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Her husband, D. Daniel, whom she married Aug. 19, 1930, died Sept. 3, 2000. A sister, Marie Gordon, also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Mallory-Dehaven-Carlson Funeral Home, Garrettsville, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Ronald G. Miller officiating. Lotha E. McClung, 67
AURORA - Lotha E. (Ewan) McClung, 67, died Friday, April 6, 2001 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights from complications of cancer. Born Feb. 11, 1934 in Alaska, she and her husband had lived in Aurora since 1960. Mrs. McClung worked in assembly for Mr. Coffee for 20 years, retiring in the mid 1980s. She was involved in the Aurora Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2629 Auxiliary unit as well as Military of the of the Cooties Auxiliary. She was a member of the New Life Assembly in Aurora. Survivors include her husband, Billy, whom she met and married in 1952 while he was stationed in the Army as a ski trooper in the RCT unit in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Kindrich-McHugh-Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon, where services will take place at 11 a.m .Monday, with the Rev. Nolin Blakkolb officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ralph C. Kelly
TALLMADGE - Ralph C. Kelley, 92, died Friday, April 6, 2001. Born in Revere, Pa., he had been a resident of Tallmadge since 1952. Mr. Kelley retired from Goodyear Aerospace as a research technician in 1973 with 30 years of service. He was a member of Tallmadge United Methodist Church and Tallmadge Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his sons, Ralph E. (Connie) of Ravenna, Harry R. (Sandy) of Dalton, Ga. and Richard L. (Rita) of Cuyahoga Falls; daughter, Susan E. of Euless, Texas; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandhchildren; sister, Helen Doudna of Washington, Pa., and brothers-in-law, John Swearingen, Walter (Martha) Swearingen, and William (Doris) Swearingen. His wife, Eleanor L. died in 1983. Four sisters and an infant daughter, Thelma Jean, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Billow's Tallmadge Chapel, 17 Southwest Ave., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Gary Glazer officiating. Roland DeUnger, 81
Roland DeUnger, 81, of Auburndale, Fla., a former Rootstown resident, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at his home. Born Feb. 7, 1920 in in Limaville, Ohio, he moved to Auburndale in 1976 from Rootstown. Mr. DeUnger was a management analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Winter Haven, Fla. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his sons, Michael of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mark of Hinesville, Georgia; daughter Sheryll Craven of Auburndale; five grandchildren; brother, John, of Auburndale; and sister, Uarda McCoy of Winter Haven. His wife, Pauline, died in November 1998. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kersey Funeral Home in Aurburndale, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday.

Jack Mancos
Jack R. Mancos, 77, of Bryn Mawr Street, Ravenna, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Born March 7, 1924 in Cleveland he was the son of Ross and Verea (Bunce) Mancos. Mr. Mancos taught at Springfield High School where he was a football and baseball coach. He then taught at and retired from Ravenna High School. He played professional football in Canada. He graduated from John Adams High School and Kent State University. He was a member of the Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and KSU Blue and Gold Club. He was a member of the charter class of the Varsity "K" KSU Hall of Fame. He lettered in football while at KSU in 1949, 1950, and 1951 when he was the team captain. He also earned a letter in baseball in 1951. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a Lieutenant. Survivors include his daughter, Stacy Devine of Cuyahoga Falls. His daughter, Kelly A. Mancos, died in 1972. There will be no calling hours. Services will be held 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, with the Rev. Timothy Kenney officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Memorials may be made to the Jack R. Mancos Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o KSU Foundation, Kent, OH 44242.

Mary Roliff
Mary Catherine Roliff, 80, of Johnson Road, Kent, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Stow Glen Retirement Center. Born July 27, 1920, in Randolph, she was the daughter of Daniel Brian and Eva Elizabeth (Royer) Miller. Mrs. Roliff was proud to be a "Rosie the Riveter" at Twin Coach during World War II. She also worked at Monarch Rubber in Hartville and at Lamson-Sessions in Kent. She formerly was a Campfire Leader, and a member of the Brimfield Grange. She was active in the community campaigning for civic issues and she was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. She enjoyed animals, nature, music, reading, gardening, politics and current events. Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia Gard-Given of Dallas, Texas, and Kimberly (David) Jozsa of Kent; two grandchildren; and sister, Helen Robertson of Barnesville. Her brother, James Miller and sister, Elsie Fillmore died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with Denny Just officiating. James Lewis
ROOTSTOWN - James W. Lewis, 59, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his home after a year-long battle with cancer. Born July 25, 1941, in Colver, Pa., he was the son of William and Agnes P. (Parkin) Lewis. He was raised in Heilwood, Pa., and lived in the Kent area since 1960. Mr. Lewis founded Industrial Molded Plastics Corporation. He enjoyed showing Arabian horses. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann (Hromulak), whom he was married to for 38 years; daughters, Kim (Larry) Buehler of Tallmadge, Kelli (Shawn) Luli of Rootstown, Karen (Brad) Cole of Columbus, Kathy (Kirk) Baumann of Beaver Falls, Pa.; six grandchildren; brothers, Don of Portage, Pa., Jack of Rootstown, Dave of Armaugh, Pa.; and sisters, Naomi Jean Rodgers of Barnesboro, Pa., Annabell Wooster of Rossiter, Pa., Shirley Strong of Heilwood, Pa., and Betsey Wolfe of Swickley, Pa. His son, Lenny, and a sister, Agnes Marcenzo died previously.
