Bernice Warshaw, 87
Bernice Warshaw, 87, of Cleveland Heights died Thursday April 12, 2001, at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights following an extended illness. Born February 19, 1914, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Joseph and Blanche (Axlerod) Zipkin. Mrs. Warshaw was retired from the Cuyahoga County Welfare Department where she was a clerk. Survivors include her son, Elliot (Gail) Warshaw of Cleveland Heights; one grandson; and two great-grandsons. Graveside funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Workmen's Circle Cemetery in Parma. Arrangements are being made by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

George F. Cales, 72
MANTUA - George F. Cales, 72, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at his home following a brief illness with cancer. Born Aug. 26, 1928, in Crown Hill, W. Va., he was the son of George and Molly (Perry) Cales. He lived in the Mantua area for the past 38 years. Mr. Cales was employed at L.T.V. Steel in Cleveland for 32 years as a ruffer and a roller, retiring in 1984. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 04833 in Florida. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing poker. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Idell (Smith) at home; sons Jeff (Sherry) and Mark (Terry) Cales, both of Mantua, John (Mary Lou) Daniels of Shalersville, Bobby Daniels of Charleston, W.Va. Melvin (June) Daniels of Sacramento, Calif.,Mike (Mary) Daniels of Milton, Florida; daughters, Rebecca Cales of Mantua and Lynn (Lochia) Kidd of Charleston, W. Va.; 23 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. His son, Dirk Cales, died in 1984. Two sisters and five brothers also died previously. Jack D. McNaughton, 58
Jack D. McNaughton, 58, of Hudson Park Drive, Hudson, died Friday, April 13, 3001, at his home. Born Dec. 14, 1942 in Cleveland, he was the son of Earl Jack McNaughton and Doris Davenport. Mr. McNaughton was the executive vice president for Precision Machined Products Association, which he joined in 1992. He was formerly executive vice president of the Steel Founders' Society of America in Des Plaines, Ill. and had been chief operating officer of the American Hotel & Motel Association in Washington, D.C. He received his bachelor of science in metallurgy from Case Institute of Technology and a masters of business administration from Western Reserve University. He also served as the vice president of the Undergraduate Alumni Association at Case Western Reserve. He also had been elected to leadership positions in the Institute for Organizational Management of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Cleveland Society of Association Executives, the Chicago Society of Association Executives and the American Executive Status from the American Society of Association Executives. Survivors include his wife, Denise A. (Stack); sons, David of Cincinnati and Daniel of Hudson; stepbrothers, Dennis (Peggy) Meacham of Columbus and Edward (Diane) Meacham of Brady Lake; stepsisters, Mariam Meacham Gillen of Kent and Jean (Edward) Dwyer of Maryland. His parents; stepfather Edward T. Meacham; and stepsister, Marcia Perry, died previously. Nicholas J. Mendiola
Nicholas J. Mendiola, 81, of Ravenna, died Monday, April 16, 2001 at his home. Born Nov. 15, 1919, in Ravenna, he was the son of Guy and Lucretia (Lapicarella) Mendiola. He was a lifelong Ravenna resident. Mr. Mendiola retired in 1984 from Frank Chervan Inc. (Darwal), where he was a cost accountant. He was on the board of directors at Frank Chervan Inc He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna, past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and past president of the Parents Club at Immaculate Conception. He was an avid ping pong player. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of master sergeant. Survivors include his wife, Carita (Wilson), to whom he was married 54 years; son, Jim (Sherry) of Aurora; daughters, Joyce (Randy) Hedrick, Betty (Tommy) Thompson and Janet, all of Ravenna, Sue (Steven) Fosnight of Kent and Karen (Dan) Stein of Akron; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, John and Joseph, both of Ravenna; sisters, Mary Rock and Nellie Kentris, both of Ravenna; and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Mendiola of Florida. Johnny "Jack" D. Kling
RANDOLPH - Johnny "Jack" D. Kling, 67, died Saturday, April 14, 2001. Born Feb. 14, 1934, in Akron, he was the son of Roy and Lou Kling. He had lived in Akron before moving to Randolph five years ago. Mr. Kling retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron in 1993 after 41 years of service. He was a life member of Cuyahoga Falls Eagles Aerie No. 2207, Ravenna Eagles Aerie No. 2164 and American Legion Post No. 281. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed camping at Cherokee Park. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn, to whom he was married 40 years; son, Johnny (Pat) Jr.; daughter, Teresa (Bob) Gay; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His brothers, Donald and Carl, died previously. Alva R. Philpot
Alva R. Philpot, 83, of Corona, Calif., a former Portage area resident, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Life Care of Corona. Born Feb. 27, 1918, in Adrain, Pa., she had lived in Corona for four years and in Norco, Calif. for 15 years. Mrs. Philpot worked at Kent State University for five years before retiring. She volunteered for Corona/Norco YMCA-BMX where she worked the snack bar. She also volunteered for the Norco Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Aurora, and was a past worthy matron of the James A. Garfield Chapter. Survivors include her daughters, Frances Swope of Portland, Ore., Janice Fear of Ravenna, and Madeline Marquez of Upland, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Cremation has taken place. No services will be held.

Mason Scott Myers
Mason Scott Myers, infant son of Matthew and Deana (Thompson) Myers of Ravenna, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Akron General Medical Center. Mary A. Easterday, 84, died Sunday, April 15, 2001. Born in Akron, she was the daughter of Bruce and Catherine (Lampe) Easterday. She was a life resident of Akron. She retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. with 37 years of service. Survivors include her brothers, Robert of Akron, and John (Linda) of Kinsman; sisters, Helen C. and Irene (Don) Midic, both of Akron. Pearl E. Neal
Pearl E. Neal, 79, of Archwood Place, Cuyahoga Falls, died Monday, April 16, 2001 at Hospice Care Center in Copley. Born Aug. 3, 1921 in Sawyerwood, Ohio, she was the daughter of Floyd and Orpha (Banks) Neal. She was a former Kent resident. Mrs. Neal was a secretary and assistant to her husband, Dr. Ross F. Neal at the Kent Baptist Temple. She was a member of the Chapel of Prayer Baptist Church, then moved to Kent Baptist Church and in recent years, was a member of the Northampton Baptist Church. She enjoyed visiting members of the church and in the hospital with her husband. Other church activities included playing the piano and organ, directing the youth choir, and teaching the Ladies Thursday Morning Bible Class. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Ross F. Neal; three grandchildren, Gary Jr., Cynthia and Shelley; five great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Neal of Stuart, Fla.; and sisters, Winona McClure of Hudson and Gloria Dunn of Lenore, N.C. Gladys V. Cowell, 80, of Ravenna, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at the Cleveland Clinic. Born March 10, 1921, in Avella, Pa., she was the daughter of Arthur and Ola (Kelly) Brooks. She had lived in Ravenna most of her life. Mrs. Cowell worked in the housekeeping department of Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna until her retirement. She previously worked as a cook at Jane Francis Nursing Home. She was a member of the Family of Jesus Fellowship Church in Ravenna. Survivors include her daughter, Terrie of Ravenna; brothers, J. Raymond Brooks of Allison, Pa. and Floyd N. Brooks of Washington, Pa.; and sister, Minerva Moten of Washington, Pa. Her husband, Thayer D., died in 1990. Her son, Doug, died in 1992. Francis Moger
Francis "Frank" Moger, 70, of Braceville Township, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren after a long illness. Born May 19, 1930, in Newton Falls, he was the son of Thomas and Mary (Csapo) Moger. He had lived in Newton Falls for 45 years before moving to Braceville Township. Mr. Moger was a sales engineer with Taylor-Winfield in Warren until he retired. He was a member of the Mahoning Valley Astronomy Club in Braceville and the Warren Amateur Ham Radio Operators. His radio call letters were W8KAK. Survivors include his son, Steven of Lake Milton; daughters, Sally Warner of Newton Falls, Susan Moger of Leavittsburg and Sandra Byrnes of Niles; 11 grandchildren; and brother, John of Newton Falls. His wife, Dorothy Merie (Leggett), whom he had married Dec. 14, 1955, died May 25, 1984. Bridget "Bea" Kiwala
Former Newton Falls resident Bridget G. "Bea" Kiwala, 86, died Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Park Village Health Center in Dover. Born April 8, 1914 in Brownsville, Pa., she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Stephanic) Sieradzki. She had lived in Republic, Pa. before moving to Newton Falls in 1942. Mrs. Kiwala was a sales associate at Falls Variety Center. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Newton Falls and the Madonna Club. She enjoyed gardening. Survivors include her daughter, Sheryl (Larry) Arnold of New Philadelphia; brothers, Edward Sieradzki of Allison, Pa. and Frank (Frances) Sieradzki of Wallington, N.J.; and sister, Victoria Kozil of Strongsville. Her husband, Walter W., whom she married Jan. 27, 1937, died Feb. 23, 1994. Her brothers, Walter and John Sieradzki, died previously. Huber F. King, 91
Huber F. King lived his entire life in Windham but he achieved international recognition for his skill as an artist and woodcarver. Mr. King, who won numerous awards in the United States, Canada and England for his work, including five "Best of Show" awards at the International Woodcarvers Congress, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. He was 91. Born Jan. 10, 1910, in Windham, he was the son of Freeman and Carrie (Huber) King. He was a lifelong resident of Windham, serving his community as a Village Council member, president of the Windham Board of Education and volunteer firefighter. Mr. King graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art and was well-known as a decorator and sign painter in Portage County. Following his retirement in 1966 after 32 years as an interior decorator, he and his wife, Lois, traveled the Southwest extensively, where he captured countless scenes in watercolors and oils. His interests later turned to woodcarving, a skill he mastered with great success. "Anyone can carve if they put their mind to it," he said in a 1981 Record-Courier interview, but added that, as a perfectionist, he put a great deal of time into preparing his work, including interviewing and researching his subjects. He did dozens of drawings before beginnning a sculpture. His favorite subjects reflected his interest in the Old West. The road to his home on Wolfe Road circled an old shop that he built to look like a frontier era assay office. His work included sculptures of Will Rogers, Mark Twain and General Custer as well as carvings of birds and animals. The Twain statue took two years to complete. He won four consecutive "Best of Show" awards, from 1972 to 1975, at the International Woodcarvers Congress, setting a record. In 1976, he and several other American carvers traveled to England to demonstrate their craft in London. He was chairman of the Affiliated Woodcarvers Association. In addition to his interior decorating work, he also worked in the sign shop at the Ravenna Arsenal during World War II and opened Sky Lane Bowling in Garrettsville in 1957. He was a member of the Garrettsville Masonic Lodge No. 246 and had served as chairman of the building committee of the Windham United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lois May (Wilson), whom he married in 1934; sons, Calvin (Carole) of Garrettsville, Dr. Darryl (Nonie) of Clarksburg, W. Va. and Barton (Karen) of Homosassa, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Elwood of Strongsville; and sisters, Frances Hutchinson of Ravenna and Luella Sabin of Lompoc, Calif. Alexander Paterson, 74
Alexander Ralph Paterson, 74, of Horning Road, Kent, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at his home. He was born March 4, 1927 in Flint, Mich. Mr. Paterson was a general foreman for automation at Chrysler in Twinsburg. He was a member of Kent Elks Lodge No. 1377 and Disabled American Veterans. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed building doll houses, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren and friends. Former Ravenna resident Melvin Thomas "Tom" Admire Sr., 52, of Parma died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Parma City Hospital after a long illness. Born Feb. 19, 1949, in Ravenna, he was the son of Harold and Ruth Admire. Survivors include his sons, Melvin Jr., Mark and Eddie, all of Ravenna; daughters, Tammy and Donna, both of Ravenna; five grandchildren; brother, Glen of Alliance; and sisters, Nancy of Ravenna, Wanda of Alliance and Donna Jean of Amsterdam, Ohio. Former Ravenna resident Melvin Thomas "Tom" Admire Sr., 52, of Parma died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Parma City Hospital after a long illness. Born Feb. 19, 1949, in Ravenna, he was the son of Harold and Ruth Admire. Former Hiram resident Gertrude Fairbanks, 86, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Apache Junction, Ariz. Born July 24, 1914, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Henry and Clara Knippenberg. She was a longtime resident of Troy Township and also had resided in Hiram. Mrs. Fairbanks retired from Johnson Rubber in Middlefield after 30 years of service. Survivors include her sons, William of Atwater, Dale of California, Ralph of Holland, Mich. and Jim of Hiram; brothers, Daniel and Ralph Knippenberg, both of Hiram. Virginia Welch
EDINBURG - Virginia "Frances" Welch, 62, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, following a short illness. Born July 29, 1938, in Butler, Pa., she was the daughter of Harry and Virginia (Smith) Setzenfand. Mrs. Welch was owner of Welch Landscaping and formerly was employed as a bus driver for the Akron City School System, and as a group leader with Portage Industries. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Palmy Chapter. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, James; sons, James (Kelly) of Diamond, Jerald (Dee) of Deerfield, Ted (Lisa) of Pickerington and Patrick (Patti) of Ravenna; daughter, Diana (Doug) Ramser of Minerva; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
