ROOTSTOWN - Margaret L. Bradbury, 90, died Thursday, May 17, 2001. Born Jan. 14, 1911, in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (McDonnell) Lavelle. She is formerly of Florida and Pennsylvania. Mrs. Bradbury was a teacher for 41 years. She was a member of St. Antonio Catholic Church of Port Charlotte, Fla. Survivors include her son, Lee (Mary) of Rootstown; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Thomas Lavelle of Groveville, N.J.; and sister, Eileen Hopkins of Oakland, Calif. Her husband, Howard, to whom she was married 55 years, died in 1994. Her sisters, Mary and Claire, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Kniffen-O'Malley Funeral Home in Avoca, Pa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church in Avoca. Louise L. Kurtik, 73
Louise L. Kurtik, 73, of Ravenna died Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born May 22, 1927, in Lamberton, Pa., she was the daughter of Martin Andrew and Blanche Sophia (Merchock) Kurtik. She moved to Ravenna three years ago after living in Lamberton and McClellandtown, Pa. Miss Kurtik was a cashier/receptionist at Uniontown Hospital, Union Supply and Equitable Life Insurance, all in Pennsylvania. She was a member of St. Procopius Roman Catholic Church in New Salem, Pa. Survivors include sister her Carolyn (Paul) Marva of Ravenna; sister-in-law, Joanne Kurtik McDonald of Big Bear, Calif.; nephews, Paul (Laura) Marva Jr. of Rootstown, and Mark (Lydia) Kurtik of Llano, Calif.; and nieces, Beth (Marc) Orlando of Mason, Ohio, Diane (Charles) Wilson of Rootstown and Kristin Campbell of Oklahoma; seven great-nephews and six great-nieces. A brother, Joseph; and nephew, Jerome Kurtik, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Haky Funeral Homes Inc. in Uniontown, Pa. DEERFIELD - Harold E. Montgomery, 62, died Thursday at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness. Born Dec. 29, 1938, in Waynesburg, Pa.; he was the son of Harold W. and Pearl (Coss) Montgomery. He was a lifelong resident of Deerfield. Mr. Montgomey was a member of Charity Masonic Lodge No. 530 and Palmy Chapter No. 144. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Lambes), to whom he was married 37 years; daughters, Rebecca of Deerfield, Michelle (Edward) De Remer of Charlestown, Glenna (Harold) Bruitt of Deerfield and Belinda (Jeremy) Sasala of Lake Milton; six grandchildren; mother and stepfather, Pearl and Roland Ruggles of Deerfield; brother, Robert (Ruthanne) of Edinburg; and sister, Tammy (Jack) Hopkins of Deerfield. His father; Harold W., and a sister, Sandra Rose, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.

Jonnie Wade McCarthy
Jonnie Wade McCarthy, 85, of Bedford Heights, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at her home after a long illness. Born Oct. 17, 1915, in Scotland, Ark., she was the daughter of John Wade and Eva (Massey) Hiland. She moved to Bedford in 1950. Mrs. McCarthy was an inspector for General Motors Corp. in Brookpark until her retirement in 1972. She was a member of the United Auto Workers Local No. 1004 and was the recording secretary for the Retirees Chapter for 10 years. Survivors include daughters, Joan "Joy" Shumate and Mary Jane Lofton, both of Middlefield; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and caregivers, Betty Stanley and Betty Brewer, with whom she made her home. Her first husband, Ewell Dunsworth, and second husband, Joseph McCarthy, died previously. A brother, Arthur Hiland, and sisters, Bertie Gardner and Lu Hall, also died previously. There will be no local services. Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral services Wednesday at Scotland Baptist Church in Scotland, Ark. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery in Scotland, Ark. Local arrangements are being handled by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Arrangements in Arkansas are being handled by Harris Funeral Home in Morrilton. Samuel Snyder, 97
RANDOLPH - Samuel Snyder, 97, died Saturday, May 19, 2001. Born Oct. 15, 1903, in Springfield Township, he was the son of Ervin and Elizabeth Snyder. He had lived in Randolph since 1944. Mr. Snyder was a dairy farmer for nearly 50 years. Survivors include his caregivers, Ray and Flora Ebie. His brother, Charles F., died in 1974. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road in Akron. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. G. John E. Rebic, Sr., 92, of Edinburg. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church with calling hours on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. In addition to his survivors, he is survived by his son-in-law, Steve Puck of Cleveland Heights.

James David Stemple Sr.
James David Stemple Sr., 67, of 2302 Salt Springs Road, Lordstown, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at his home. Born Jan. 3, 1934, in Terra Alta, W.Va., he was the son of John Jacob and Pearl (Taylor) Stemple. He came to this area in 1952 from Kingwood, W.Va. Mr. Stemple was an assembler at General Motors in Lordstown for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. A Kingwood High School graduate, he was a member of the Bailey Road Baptist Church, and was a past member of Christ Memorial Baptist Church in Warren and Lake Milton Baptist Church in Lake Milton. He served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon, bus driver, Sunday school teacher and junior church worker. He enjoyed camping and spending several weeks in Florida each winter. He also enjoyed woodworking, hunting, and stripping and refinishing furniture. Survivors include his wife, Iris (Weaver), whom he married Aug. 24, 1957; son, James Stemple Jr. of Stafford, Va.; daughter, Kim Chalker of Braceville; five grandchildren; a brother, Charles Stemple of Streetsboro, and sister, Virginia Hahn of Oakland, Md. His parents; brothers, Phil, Frank, Howard and John; and sister, Dortha died previously. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls and one hour before the service on Monday. Burial will be in Lordstown Cemetery. Donald R. Hornof
Donald R. Hornof, 57, of Florida, the son of Geraldine Helpbringer of Ravenna, died Thursday, May 17, 2001. He was born Sept. 22, 1943. In addition to his mother, survivors include his sons, Larry and Joey, both of Florida; daughter, Charlene of South Carolina, four grandchildren; brothers, Ray of Ravenna and David of Newton Falls; and sister, Rose of Akron. There will be no services or calling hours. Cremation has taken place.

Kenneth A. Clayton
Former Randolph resident Kenneth A. Clayton, 93, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Born Jan. 27, 1908, in Alliance, he was the son of James and Edith (Lynne) Clayton. He had lived in Randolph since 1945. Mr. Clayton retired in 1973 from Jet Rubber Co. in Rootstown and also had been employed at Goodyear Aerospace in Akron. He attended Marlboro Christian Church. Survivors include his son, Jerry of Seattle; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Helen Mansfield of Akron and Mary Troxell of Denver. His wife, Helen, and brother, Roger, died previously. Visitation will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. Friday at Hillside Cemetery Chapel in Randloph. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

George J. Scott
STREETSBORO - George J. Scott, 69, died Monday, May 21, 2001 at Outlook Pointe in Ravenna. Born Oct. 29, 1931, in Newfoundland, Canada, he was the son of Samuel and Ann (Pardy) Scott. He was a former resident of Kent. Mr. Scott was an ironworker at the H.H. Robertson Company in Cleveland prior to his retirement in 1974. Survivors include his daughter, Georgette (Larry) Scott Clemens of Streetsboro; and sister, Lillian Stewart of Newfoundland, Canada. His daughter, Wanda Scott; and brother, Albert, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home ,Steetsboro Chapel, where services will be held at noon Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Ravenna.

Patricia (Patty) Antonelli Morella
Former Kent resident Patricia (Patty) Antonelli Morella, 69, of Harrison, N.Y., died Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at White Plains Hospital in New York after a long illness. Born March 23, 1932 in Kent, she was the daughter of Julia and Ascenzo Antonelli. She attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent . Mrs. Morella worked at Via Appia Restaurant in Harrison. She was an animal lover and an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians. Survivors include her daughters, Lorie (Rick) Prestwood of New York and Renee (Michael) Villanova of New York; two grandchildren; sisters, Fran (Jack) Ruble of Barberton and Jeanette (Frank) Felton of Rootstown; and friend, Michael DiSante. Cremation has taken place. Private services were held at Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home of Mamoroneck, N.Y.

Detra J. "Dee-Dee" Masters
NELSON - Detra J. "Dee-Dee" Masters, 20, died Monday, May 21, 2001 at Akron Children's Medical Center from complications of cystic fibrosis. Born Sept. 8, 1980, in Warren, she was the daughter of John J. II and Monica S. (Wukelich) Masters. A lifetime Garrettsville resident, she was a 1999 graduate of James A. Garfield High School. Miss Masters attended Delightful Evangelical Church in Southington, where she helped with the youth group, DECKA.She enjoyed raising shih-tzu pups. Survivors include her parents, John and Monica of Nelson; sister, Ashley of Nelson; grandmother, Hermenia Wukelich of Southington; and fiance, Richard Smith II of Akron. Her grandparents, John J. Wukelich and John and Mildred Masters, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. ROOTSTOWN - Geraldine Elaine "Gerri" Conway, 79, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at her daughter's home in Mogadore following a long illness. Born May 18, 1922, in Burning Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of James B. and Vernie May (Shuck) Scott. Mrs. Conway was a homemaker. She attended Rootstown United Methodist Church and Community Bible Church. Survivors include son, Thomas L. of Rootstown; daughter, Becky Potts of Mogadore; one grandchild; and sisters, Grace Kirby, Mabel Van Pelt and Inez Gillian, all of West Virginia, and Mildred Blakenship of Akron. Her husband, Harold L., died in 1988. Nine brothers and sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Roy Kelsey and the Rev. Agnes L. Stamm
GARRETTSVILLE - Agnes L. Stamm, 81, died Monday, May 21, 2001 at Kent Quality Care, following a period of failing health. Born June 5, 1919, in Nelson, she was the daughter of Valentine and Veronica (Galla) Duch. She was a life resident of the Garrettsville-Nelson areas. Mrs. Stamm was employed at the Ravenna Arsenal during war times, and then worked at Nymold Plastics in Garrettsville for 17 years as a press operator, retiring in 1984. She was one of the founding members of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Garrettsville, where she was active with the Altar and Rosary Society and the church bereavement program. She also was a member of the Garrettsville Senior Citizens and the Hiram Lunch Bunch. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling in the United States and out of the country. Survivors include her son, Robert (Deborah) of Medina; daughters, Patti (Phil) Cannatti of Canfield and Nancy (Kevin) Smith of Rootstown; four grandchildren; and brother, Edward (Wilda) Duch of Garrettsville. Four brothers and five sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday followed by services at 11 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Garrettsville, with the Rev. Richard Pentello officiating. Burial wil be in Park Cemetery in Garrettsville.

James R. Williams, 87
James R. Williams, 87, of Parkman, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Blossom Hill Nursing Home in Huntsburg. Born Oct. 4, 1913, in Cedarville, W. Va., he was the son of Rufus Clyde and Allie (Virginia (Moyors) Williams. He had lived in Parkman since 1965. Mr. Williams was an industrial engineer and had worked for Johnson Rubber Co. for 15 years. He also worked at B.F. Goodrich in Pennsylvania and worked in Findlay. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Parkman Congregational Church, Joppa Lodge No. 517 F & AM in Akron, Jerusalem Commandery No. 15 in Phoenixville, Pa., former Shriner in Baltimore, Md., member of Yusif Khan Grotto of Portage County, Crescent Chapter OES No. 7 of Garrettsville, member of the Royal Arch Masons, the American Legion for more than 50 years, Parkman 55 Plus Club, Parkman Historical Society, Geauga County Historical Society and Parkman Community Affairs. Mr. Williams received the Geauga County Senior Citizen of the Year Award in 1993. He served as chairman of the Township Appeals Board and was a trustee of Parkman Congregational Church. He was an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife, Virginia "Peggy" (Tucker) Warner, whom he married May 29, 1976; and numerous nephews and nieces. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service in Middlefield. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parkman Congregational Church. Violet E. Ritenour
Violet E. Ritenour, 69, of Colebrook, Ohio, the sister of Paul Leigh of Ravenna, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown from complications following open heart surgery. Born May 29, 1931, in St. Mary's, W.Va., she was the daughter of VanBuren and Bertha M. (Ashcraft) Leigh. Formerly of Braceville Township, she lived in Colebrook for the past five years. Mrs. Ritenour was a homemaker. She attended the First Congregational Church of Wayne. She enjoyed cooking, crafts and flower gardening. Survivors include her husband, George D. Ritenour whom she married Nov. 4, 1950; son, Gary G. Ritenour of Colebrook; daughters, Kathy S. Farmwald of Colebrook and Sharon A. Francis of Clarks Mills, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Herbert Leigh of Barberton, Paul Leigh of Ravenna, and Cecil Leigh of Newton Falls; and sisters, Jean Salley of St. Mary's, W.Va., Patricia Leigh Stoll of Marshallville, Ohio, and Rita Russell of Warren. Her parents; brothers, Jack, Curtis, Harry and Forrest Leigh; and a sister, Freda Swaggert died previously. James M. Smalley
James M. Smalley, 60, of Newton Falls, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. Born July 16, 1940, in Montgomery, Ala., he was the son of Wallace and Bessie (Bynan) Smalley. He had lived in Newton Falls most of his life and formerly resided in Windham. Mr. Smalley had worked as a supervisor for WCI Steel for 30 years, retiring last year. He enjoyed yard work and traveling. Survivors include his sons, Richard W. and Robert J., both of Newton Falls; and four grandchildren. A brother, Wallace Jr., died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Newton Falls. Ralph Mack
STREETSBORO - Ralph Mack, 75, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a brief illness. Born Oct. 24, 1925, in Cleveland, he had lived in Streetsboro since 1957. Mr. Mack worked as a machinist at Jerpbak-Bayles in Solon. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Streetsboro. Survivors include his wife, Ann, whom he married in 1948; daughter, Caroel Wolbert of Troy Mich.; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; and sisters, Grace Tuttle of Garfield Heights and Genevieve Kodat of Parma. His brother, Kenneth, and sister, Virginia Barto, died previously. Private graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro, with Msgr. Frederick Slaven officiating. DEERFIELD - Harold L. Ranft Sr., 72, of 1693 Notman Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2001, at his home. Born Dec. 5, 1928, in Alliance, he was the son of Lawrence and Rhea (Light) Ranft. Mr. Ranft was a truck driver with Roadway Trucking of Phoenix, Ariz. Survivors include his sons, Larry, Harold and Russ, all of Phoenix; daughters, Rhea of Alliance and Susan Gates of Deerfield;11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and mother, Rhea of Alliance. His wife, Dotty (Burkey); and father, Lawrence, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home, 126 W. Vermont Ave., Sebring, where a memorial service will be held at 9 tonight. Memorials may be made to Alliance Hospice and Nurses Association.

Michael "Mike" Puzio
Michael "Mike" Puzio, 91, of Cuyahoga Falls died Tuesday May 15, 2001. Born Feb. 12, 1910, in Yonkers, N.Y., he was the first son of Polish immigrants. Mr. Puzio was a machinist and a real estate agent. He also was a laborer on the Hoover Dam Project in the 1930s. He served under Gen. Douglas McArthur in the Philippines, where he was also a boxer. He knocked out the Pacific Fleet Champ in Manila and later he knocked out the Nevada State Champion in Las Vegas. He had 25 wins and one defeat in his career. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance and a longstanding member of the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish. Survivors include his grandchildren, Ray and Melanie Leone; four great-grandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Mike (Mary) Chlysta, Charles (Betty) Chlysta; and Russel (Betty) Chlysta, all of Ravenna. Helen Ann (Chlysta), his first wife of 45 years; and Alma (Kennedy), his second wife of 17 years, died previously Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McGowan-Reid & Santos Funeral Home in Cuyahoga Falls. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Eugene Catholic Church in Cuyahoga Falls. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. V. Thomas Visher Jr., 57, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at his home. Born Jan. 6, 1944, in Ravenna, he was the son of Victor T. and Dorothy (Lewis) Visher Sr. He was a lifelong Ravenna resident. Mr. Visher was a self-employed trucker. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ravenna. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran. Survivors include his sister, Becky Seredick of Broadview Heights; and companion, Sheila Craycroft of Ravenna. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating.

Cynthia Jane (Grimm) Rogers
Cynthia Jane (Grimm) Rogers, 42, of Charlotte, N.C., the sister of three Portage County residents, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Mercy South Hospital in Charlotte. Born Nov. 27, 1958, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Arthur Raymond and Shirley Ann (Halvorsen) Grimm. Survivors include her husband, Darrell Gene; son, Robbie; daughters, Jessica and Erica; two grandchildren; brothers, David Grimm of Ravenna, Kevin Grimm of Streetsboro, Chuck Grimm of Akron and Larry Grimm of Charlotte, North Carolina; and sister, Becky Biltz of Streetsboro. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tyvola Church of God in Charlotte, with the Rev. Dennis Beam officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service. Inurnment will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jefferson Memorial Park in Pittsburgh. Arrangements are being handled by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service in Charlotte.
