Joseph P. Carney
Joseph P. Carney, 82, of Youngstown, father of John F. Carney St., principal of Patrick School in Kent, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Born Feb. 12, 1919, in Youngstown, he was the son of James J. and Elizabeth (Aushmner) Carney. He was a 1937 graduate of Ursuline High School in Youngstown.
Mr. Carney was employed as a shipper for U.S. Steel McDonald Works and was an inspector for the Department Industrial Relations State of Ohio, until he retired in 1981.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a combat engineer in the Asia and Pacific Theater.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Austintown and its Men's Club. He was a charter member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9947 and also was past commander of Mahoning County Council Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as president of P.E.R.I. for nine years.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie (Rees), whom he married Oct. 19, 1974; son, John F. of Streetsboro; daughter, Mary Ann Toke of Woodbridge, Va.; step-son, William Rees of Tomball, Texas; step-daughters, Maxine Fickes of Katy, Texas and Nancy Quinn of Manassas, Va.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His first wife, Virginia (Sullivan), whom he married June 6, 1940, died Nov. 27, 1971. His brothers, James, William and Thomas; and two grandchildren also died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at McVean & Hughes Funeral Home in Youngstown. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church in Austintown.

Mary Hrenko
Mary K. Hrenko, 94, of 1320 Mahoning Ave., Warren, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Community Skilled Nursing Home after 12 years with Alzheimer's disease.
Born March 27, 1907, in Monessen, Pa., she was the daughter of John and Barbara (Furda) Kichinko. She had lived in the Warren area for 70 years.
Mrs. Hrenko worked in quality control with General Electric for 26 years until she retired.
She was a member of St. Peters and Pauls Byzantine Catholic Church in Warren.
She enjoyed cooking Slovak dishes and doing crafts and ceramics, especially egg decorating.
Survivors include two nieces and one nephew. Her husband, Michael, died Nov. 9, 1961, and her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Harvey, died Sept. 16, 1988. Her brothers, Louis and John, and sister, Anna Chesmar, died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in St. Peters and Pauls Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls.

Dominic Montecalvo
Dominic Montecalvo, 79, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Altercare Nursing Home in Ravenna.
Born Dec. 25, 1921, in Ravenna, he was the son of Joseph and Vincenza Montecalvo. He was a lifelong Ravenna resident.
Mr. Montecalvo was employed as a baker, having also worked at Montigney's Hardware in Ravenna and as a dispatcher for Ohio State Highway Patrol.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church with Msgr. Robert Sabatino officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna.
Walter R. Hyde
MANTUA - Walter R. Hyde, 77, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at University Hospitals of Cleveland following a progressive illness.
Born Aug. 29, 1923, in Dalton, Ga., he was the son of Virgil and Lillian (Leadforth) Hyde.
Mr. Hyde was a metal finisher for 36 years at Ford Motor Company in Walton Hills.
He was a member of the United Auto Workers 420 in Bedford.
Survivors include his wife, Jean L (Rickard) Hyde, whom he married Sept., 23, 1970; son, James Hyde of Georgia; stepson, Merrill Winfield of Girard; daughter, Betty (Doug) Mullens of Cleveland; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His son, "Dutchie" Hyde, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Shalersville. Burial will in Drakesburg Cemetery in Freedom Township.
Kathryn Louise Rochowiak
Kathryn Louise Rochowiak, 77, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Sarasota, Fla.
Born Feb. 21, 1924, she was the daughter of Ofa Warner and Audetta Warner Manes.
Mrs. Rochowiak had worked for Oak Rubber. She moved to Florida from Ravenna in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Sandy Smith of Ravenna, Nikki Craft of Clyde, N.C., and Sheree (Rich) Miller of Hamden, Conn.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her brothers, Chet and Richard; and sister, Irene Baker died previously.

Mary Ann Sanders, 73
Mary Ann Sanders, 73, of 329 Oak Knoll, Newton Falls, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
Born July 26, 1927, in Newton Falls, she was the daughter of Andrew and Mary Marie (Serbin) Yager. She had been a life resident of Newton Falls.
Mrs. Sanders worked at Trumbull Lamp for several years and worked as a clerk at Falls Variety Center for 13 years, retiring in 1979.
She enjoyed crocheting and photography. She and her husband wintered in Florida and enjoyed going to their camp in Pennsylvania.
Survivors include her husband, James E., whom she married Feb. 16, 1948; son, James D. of Newton Falls; daughters, Nancy (James) Petrick of Paris; Susan Bee of Newton Falls and Cindy Wargo of Cleveland, Ga.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother, John Yager of Youngstown. Her brothers, Mike and Andy Yager; and sister, Ann Kucek, died previously.

Garry L. Simmons, 62
SHALERSVILLE - Garry L. Simmons, 62, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Dec. 23, 1938, in Jamestown, Pa., he was the son of Kenneth and Clarice (Carney) Simmons. He had lived in Streetsboro before moving to the Mantua-Shalersville area 15 years ago.
Mr. Simmons was an electrician for the Ford Motor Co. in Walton Hills.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his daughters, Melissa Moore of Kent, Maureen Easton of Shalersville and Michele Powell of Cement, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; mother, Clarice Daughenbaugh of Ravenna; and brother, Dennis of Ravenna.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Shalersville.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Evanoff
Jacqueline "Jackie" Evanoff, 69, of Casa Grande, Ariz., died May 21, 2001, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Akron, she was a 1949 graduate of Ravenna Township High School.
Mrs. Evanoff was a homemaker.
She enjoyed swimming, dancing and music.
She is survived by a son, Don Evanoff Jr. of Duncan, Ariz.; a daughter, Kim E. Seigler of Casa Grande; a grandson; her mother, Geraldine Linton of Lakeland, Fla.; and a brother, Jim of Lakeland, Fla. Her husband, Don Evanoff Sr., died in 1999.
A memorial service will be planned. Cremation has taken place.
Francis "Frank" M. Kralik
Former Windham resident Francis "Frank" M. Kralik, 79, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, in Uniontown, Pa. at the home of his daughter, where he resided.
Born May 29, 1922 in Rossiter, Idaho, he was the son of Martin and Anna (Timko) Kralik. He had lived in Windham for a short time before moving to Pennsylvania.
Mr. Kralik was a meat cutter at United Foods.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Windham.
Survivors include sons, Frank M. (Marie) of Goose Creek, S.C. and Joseph of Kentucky; daughters, Linda Ann Reiger of Las Vegas and Joan (Larry) Clay of Uniontown, Pa.; seven grandchildren; brothers, Carl of Cleveland and Albert of Ravenna; and sister, Mary Sterpka of Windham. His wife, Frances M., and three sisters died previously.

William R. Braun
WINDHAM - William R. Braun, 59, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at his daughter's home following a long illness.
Born Feb. 22, 1942, in Youngstown, he was the son of Lester and Helen (Davin) Braun. He had lived in Columbus for 18 years.
Mr. Braun was a carpenter for Kitchen Fronts of Columbus.
A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member and past officer of American Legion Post No. 674 of Windham.
He was a gifted musician and played many string instruments. He was a leather craftsman and enjoyed woodworking, fishing and gourmet cooking. He liked to travel and enjoyed Caribbean cruises.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn (Hertzog), whom he married Nov. 30, 1980; son, Thomas (Polly) Justham of Windham; daughters, Deborah (Phil) Snyder and Barbara Sterpka, both of Windham; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Jean Faraglia of Youngstown. A son, Billy; brother, Lester Jr.; and sister, Mary Lou DeGaten, died previously.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, officiated by the Rev. Matt Darrin.
Vickie Lynn Johnson
Vickie Lynn Johnson, 45, of Ravenna, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Akron City Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Saturday on Interstate-76.
Born April 16, 1956 in Columbus, she was the daughter of Glen O. and Betty Jean (Lankford) Johnson. She had lived in Washington Court House, Ohio before moving to Ravenna 20 years ago.
Survivors include her sons, Buddy (Sara) Johnson of Uniontown and Harold Douglas (Kari) Ford III of Wayland; daughter, Nichole (Robert) Durr of Youngstown; six grandchildren; father and stepmother, Glen O. and Penny Johnson of Washington Court House; mother, Betty Jean Johnson of Burnsville, N.C.; brother, Randy Gene of Canton, Mich.; sister, Elizabeth Swenson of Ypsilanti, Mich.; and former husband, Harold Douglas Ford Jr. of Wayland. A brother, Glen E. Johnson, died previously.

Lawrence G. Moneypenny
SUFFIELD - Lawrence G. Moneypenny, 71, died Friday, June 8, 2001.
He was the son of William and Veronica Moneypenny.
Mr. Moneypenny was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Randolph, the American Legion Post 281 and the Akron Federation of Musicians.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte, to whom he was married for 51 years; sons, Lawrence (Susan), David of Atlanta, Douglas and Matthew (Angie); daughters, Cathy (Joe) Cotton, Mary (James) Allen, Joan (John) Moran of Indiana and Claudia (Dan) Smith; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, William (Polly), Edward (Ruth) and Tom (Gloria); and sisters, Beatrice Moneypenny, Francis (Bill) Spence, Mary (Joe) Gaffney and Betty (Bob) Oettinger. A daughter, Theresa; brothers, John, Art and Leo; and sister, Rita Schweitzer; died previously.

Larry Wayne Paxton
Larry Wayne Paxton, 56, of Ravenna, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at his home.
Born Sept. 9, 1944, in Ravenswood, W.Va., he was the son of Carl and Leah (Rowley) Paxton. He moved to Ravenna 35 years ago.
Mr. Paxton was a machinist with Gougler Industries in Kent for 34 years.
He attended Bethel Baptist Church in Ravenna.
Survivors include his wife, Mary J. (Turner), to whom he was married 34 years; daughters, Lisa Patterson and Tricia Reed, both of Garrettsville; two grandchildren; mother, Leah of Ravenswood, W.Va.; and brothers, William (Gayle) of Stow and Keith of Ravenswood.

Pauline R. (Shriver) Beard
Former Portage County resident Pauline R. (Shriver) Beard, 83, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville after a sudden illness.
Born Sept. 17, 1917, in Kinchello, W. Va., she was the daughter of Dorsey and Hattie (Gohnair) Batton. She had lived in the Ravenna, Garrettsville, Windham and Newton Falls areas for many years before moving to Sullivan in 1998.
Mrs. Beard was a licensed practical nurse for many years in the Cleveland area and worked at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna from 1948 to 1959 as a nurses aide.
She enjoyed crafts, crocheting and reading the Bible. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church in Wellington, Ohio as well as a former member of Bethel Baptist Church in Ravenna.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth N. Beard, whom she married May 30, 1998; sons, Thomas H. (Dina) Shriver of Mentor and Terry L. (JoAnne) Beard of Cincinnati; daughters, Dora (Clifford) Ball of Warren, Barbara (Larry) Love of Newburyport, Mass., Cynditha (Al) Shawchak of Ashland and Joni (Dave) Williams of West Salem; 26 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Wade Batton of Streetsboro and Paul Batton of Seattle. Her first husband, Frank Shriver, died in 1994. A brother, Denzel Batton; and sister, Reva McClung, also died previously.

John Donald "Jack" Heimel
RANDOLPH - John Donald "Jack" Heimel, 79, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at his home.
Born April 20, 1922, in Portland, Oregon, he was the son of Donald B. and Helen (Mosier) Heimel. He grew up in Olympia, Wash.
Mr. Heimel joined the National Guard before he was 18 and then joined the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel after 30 years of service, including in World War II and Vietnam. Following his retirement, he went into business for himself.
Mr. Heimel was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Randolph. He was a member of Catholic War Veterans, the Ravenna Elks Club and a volunteer at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna for 10 years.
He was an avid golfer and took up downhill skiing at the age of 57. He enjoyed fishing, boating, playing bridge and taking care of his orchard.
He earned a master's degree in business administration from George Washington University.
Survivors include his wife, Anita (Buergler) Hayes Heimel; sons, Michael (Lorene) of Colorado, John (Cindy) of California and Jeffrey (Penny) of North Canton; daughters, Cynthia (Neal) Broida of Akron, Denise (Gary) Fink of England and Laura (Joe) Tracy of Maryland; step-daughters, Beth (Tim) Moon of Randolph, Becky (Bob) Berger of Kent and Holly Hayes of Bainbridge; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His first wife, Jacqueline, died in 1974. A sister, Donna Miles, died previously.

Joseph Smerick
Joseph Smerick, 75, of Silver Oaks, Kent, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born April 8, 1926, in Old Forge, Pa., he was the son of George and Anna (Andrunik) Smerick.
Mr. Smerick was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kent and the American Legion in Atlas, Pa. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary (Scully), to whom he was married 52 years; sons, Joseph Jr. (Christine) of Copley and Michael (Linda) of Lakewood; daughter, Suzanne (David) Murphy-Swanson of Kent; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A brother, George Jr., died previously.

Matthew Resick
Matthew Resick, 85, died Friday, June 8, 2001, in Cape Canaveral, Fla.
He was born Feb. 18, 1916, in South Fork, Pa.
Mr. Resick served as a professor on the faculty of Kent State University. He was the baseball coach for 13 years beginning in 1948. He authored two books and served as the president of the Ohio Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1970 to 1971. At the time he retired in 1975, he was the associate dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He was named Outstanding Alumni of Ashland University in 1978, and was inducted into the KSU Varsity "K" Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II, earning the rank of major, and served in North Africa and Italy. He earned his bachelor's of science degree in 1941 at Ashland College and his mater's and doctorate in education from Ohio State University. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, world traveler and a senior life master in bridge. He retired to Cape Canaveral in 1975.
Survivors include his wife, Lovina, whom he married in August 1941; son, Thomas; daughters, Patricia and Cathy Resick Leighton, their spouses and six grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by Brevard Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Sharpes, Fla.

Evelyn Bennett
Evelyn Bennett, 90, of Howe Road, Kent, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Maplewood Care Centre in Streetsboro.
Born Dec. 31, 1910, in Montpelier, she was a daughter of E.F. and Mabel (Wright) Pugh.
Mrs. Bennett was a life member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Brimfield, the grandmothers club and the quilting club.
Survivors include sons, Milton of Chandler, Texas, Eugene of Reno, Nev., Allan of Akron, and Roland of Akron; daughters Frances (Henry) Brinckmann of Kent and Mabel (William) Kneale of Spring Hill, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Powell of Cortland and Donna Daniels of Clearwater, Fla. Her husband, Ernest Bennett, died in 1995; and her daughter, Beth Bennett died in 1995. Brothers Lawrence and Olen Pugh and sister, Alice Crislip also died previously.
Calling hours will be held one hour before the 11 a.m. Tuesday services at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Geraldine Burchett officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Brimfield.
Esther M. Waltenberger, 94
Esther M. Waltenberger, 94, of South Prospect Street in Ravenna, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Nov. 26, 1906, in Barberton, she was the daughter of Frank M. and Mary (Harter) Waltenberger.
Miss Waltenberger retired in 1971 from her position as assistant dean of the School of Music in Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and was included in Who's Who of American Women - Fifth Edition. She held life memberships in the Delta Omicron National Professional Fraternity, Calusa Musicale, National Federation of Music Clubs, Little Acorns and the Friends of the Library in Cape Coral, Fla.
She attended Akron Business College, University of Akron, Wayne State University, Detroit Institute of Art, University of Dayton and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She studied under Professor William Madoc Roberts in Cleveland.
Survivors include her sister, Letha Phile of Newark. Her brothers, Charles M. Waltenberger and Clarence E. Waltenberger, died previously.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where services will immediately follow with the Rev. Kent Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Loyal Oak Cemetery in Loyal Oak.
