Ben Gintert, 83
Ben Maurice Gintert, 83, of Leavittsburg, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren of natural causes. Born Sept. 22, 1917, in Braceville, he was the son of Fred and Gertrude (Burson) Gintert. He lived in the Leavittsburg and Braceville areas all his life. Mr. Gintert was employed as a bus driver for Braceville schools prior to his retirement in 1968. He also was a farmer and a truck driver. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Braceville Christian Church, the Farm Bureau, Youngstown Maennerchor, Braceville Senior Citizens Group and the Lions Club. He loved gardening. Survivors include his step-son, Bill Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; step-daughters, Jo (Larry) Carroll of Canfield and Judy (Ron) White of Estero, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His wife, Helen (Davis) died Jan. 27, 1987. Brother, Charles Gintert; and sisters, Blanche Brobst, Fredris Kelly and Betty Hershey died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Braceville Christian Church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Braceville Cemetery. Wilda Berry, 77
Wilda B. Berry, 77, of Ravenna Township, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at her home. Born March 3, 1924, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of Chester and Virginia (Miller) Light. She had lived in Ravenna for the past 38 years. Mrs. Berry was retired from Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, where she had worked in the patient information department. She was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include her husband, Rodger, to whom she was married for 52 years; son, Chuck Berry of Ravenna; daughter, Cheryl Hiatt of Ravenna; one grandson; and brother, David Light of Maryland. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

Edna Mospens, 81
Edna R. Mospens, 81, of 6742 S.R. 225 in Ravenna, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at her residence. Born Nov. 21, 1919, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Valentine and Rose (Frass) Baitz. She was a Twinsburg resident before moving to Ravenna. Mrs. Mospens was employed as a bookkeeper at Canteen Corp. in Twinsburg for 18 years. She was a member of St. Cosmos and Damion Catholic Church in Twinsburg. Survivors include her son, John P. of Hawaii; daughters, Theresa T. Hill of Ravenna and Judith L. Wykle of Elyria; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary DePue of Cincinnati. Her husband, John A. died in 1971. Four brothers and three sisters also died previously. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Gadnetz-Ruzck Funeral Home, 126 W. Vermont Ave. in Sebring. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Lake Milton with the Rev. David Merzweiler officiating. Cremation will take place. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery in Hudson. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Roy Schlegelmilch
HIRAM - Roy Schlegelmilch, 87, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at his home on Allyn Road in Hiram Rapids. Born Oct. 27, 1913 in Hiram Rapids, he was the son of Jack "John" and Erma (Baldwin) Schlegelmilch. He was a life resident of the Hiram area. Mr. Schlegelmilch worked as a tool and die maker for the Weatherhead Company in Cleveland for 35 years. He later worked at the Samuel Moore Company in Mantua, retiring in 1979. A music lover, he played trombone and saxophone in the Weatherhead Orchestra and several other bands during the Big Band Era. A versatile athlete, he played center in basketball and pitched on the baseball team at Hiram High School. He pitched the first no-hit, no-run game in Portage County high school sports, earning him an entry into the Portage County Hall of Fame. He enjoyed bowling, golf and working in his garden. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn (Bishop), to whom he was married 60 years; sons, David (Sandy) of Hiram and Ronald (Kathy) of North Carolina; daughters, Judy Bruey and Jean, both of Hiram Rapids; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His brothers, Merle and Ralph, died previously. No calling hours or services will be held. Arrangements were handled by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua. Memorials can be made to Robinson Memorial Hospital Hospice.

Harry Homer Bender
Harry Homer Bender, 76, of Ravenna Township, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at the Kent Healthcare Center. Born March 5, 1925 in Coshocton, he had lived in Ravenna since 1952. Mr. Bender was a machinist at Colonial Machine Co. in Kent until he retired. He was a member of Ravenna Moose Lodge No. 1234. Survivors include his sons, Terry and Kirk, both of Ravenna; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His wife, Ethel M., died April 14, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Kay Dunlap officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Ellsworth
Former Ravenna resident Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Ellsworth, 78, died Monday, June 25, 2001, at her home in Stuart, Fla. Born March 6, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of Clyde C. and Mary (Lampkin) Church. She lived in Ravenna for 40 years prior to moving to Florida in August 2000. Mrs. Ellsworth taught in the Ravenna City School system for 25 years. She was a member of the Portage County Retired Teachers Association and First Congregational Church of Ravenna. Survivors include her husband, William; son, David (Christine) of Antioch, Ill.; daughter, Mary Sue (Charles) Hawken of Jensen Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Arrangements for a local memorial service are pending. Larry Hicks
Larry Hicks, 58, the brother of Peggy Long of Windham, died Sunday, July 8, 2001 at his residence in Goshen, Ky. Born Aug. 7, 1942, in Hampton, Tenn., he was the son of Daniel L. and Mable Hicks. Mr. Hicks was a computer executive for Ford Motor Co. in Louisville, Ky. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. In addition to his sister, survivors include his wife, Loretta (Diehl); daughters, Heather L. Krupp and Miranda M., both of Louisville, Ky.; two grandchildren; mother and stepfather, Mable and John Matthews of Charlotte, N.C.; and brother, Douglas of Charlotte, N.C. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until services at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Ky . Cremation will take place. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Wilda B. Berry
Services will be held Wednesday for Wilda B. Berry, 77, of Ravenna Township, who died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at her home. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Ronald Lanham officiating. Kathryn Everman, 78
GARRETTSVILLE ­ Kathryn E. Everman, 78, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at her home after a long illness. Born Dec. 2, 1922, in Hiram, she was the daughter of John and Bessie (Ambrose) Satterlee. Formerly of Windham, she was a resident of the Garrettsville area since 1967. Mrs. Everman worked for many years at several restaurants in the Garrettsville area. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Free Church in Garrettsville. She enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family. Survivors include her husband, Chester L., whom she married Oct. 4, 1954; sons, Joseph (Phyllis) Everman of Florida and James Satterlee of Garrettsville; daughters, Betty (William) Anderson of Parkman, Linda (Tom) Matota of Nelson Township and Mary (J.D.) Cock of Arizona; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. One sister, two brothers and a grandson died previously. No calling hours will be held. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua, with the Rev. Robert Stickel officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

Bertha Brewer, 86
MANTUA ­ Bertha M. Brewer, 86, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Maison Aine in Stow. Born March 3, 1915, in Aberdeen, S.D., she was the daughter of George and Bertha (Hartlzer) Steman. She had lived in the Mantua area since 1954. Mrs. Brewer was a homemaker. She was a former member of Hilltop Christian Church in Mantua. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include her sons, Daniel (Justine) of Berrien Springs, Mich., and James and Douglas (Jean), both of Hiram; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, Daniel, died in 1969. No calling hours will be held. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hillside Cemetery on S.R. 303. in Shalersville. Arrangements were made by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

John Audino, 59
WINDHAM - John Audino, 59, died unexpectedly Monday, July 9, 2001 in North Jackson, Ohio. Born May 16, 1942 in Ravenna, he was the son of Joseph and Margaret (Foust) Audino. He had been a resident of Windham for 40 years. Mr. Audino was the owner-operator of the Main Street Bar in Windham. Survivors include his daughters, Michele Pasko of Mooresville, N.C., and Tami Gower of Largo, Fla. His parents and brother, Joe, died previously. There will be no calling hours. A private family service will be held. Arrangements were made by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville.

Beverly Hrezik
Beverly Ann Hrezik, 62, of Ravenna Township, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born April 21, 1939 in Cleveland, she had lived in Ravenna since 1979. Mrs. Hrezik was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Michael, to whom she was married 42 years; sons, Michael of Ravenna and Paul of Toledo; daughter, Jennifer Daniels of Los Angeles; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her daughter, Pamela, died previously. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna, with Msgr. Robert Sabatino officiating. Private burial will take place. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Ralph Hamilton, 80
Former Ravenna resident Ralph R. "Ham" Hamilton, 80, of Cuyahoga Falls, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at his home. Born Dec. 3, 1920 in Kent, he was a graduate of Ravenna High School. He had lived in Ravenna before moving to Cuyahoga Falls in 1970. Mr. Hamilton worked for the Cuyahoga Falls Postal Office for 20 years. He was a member of First Christian Church of Ravenna. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mabel I., to whom he was married 56 years; sons, Dale (Nancy) of Medina, Terry (Tammy) of Ashland City, Tenn. and Scott of Cuyahoga Falls; daughters, Kathy (Arnold) Buser of Tallmadge and Cindy Leatherman of Cuyahoga Falls; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Alice Richards of Ravenna. A brother, Jack, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight and from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m.Friday at Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, with the Rev. James Schimmel officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Cuyahoga Falls. Dorothy Hostetler, 92
FREEDOM - Dorothy Hostetler, 92, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at the Portage County Nursing Home in Shalersville after a period of failing health. Born May 13, 1909 on the Page Family Farm in Streetsboro, she was the daughter of Ernest H. and Lavina (Mattix) Page. She graduated from Streetsboro High School and had lived in the Shalersville and Freedom Township areas all of her life. Mrs. Hostetler and her husband, Dennis, lived on their farm, where she had an egg route and enjoyed gardening, canning and freezing. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing and growing indoor plants. She was a longtime, active member of Portage Faith United Methodist Church, where she was involved in Lend-A-Hand and Ruth Circle. She was a former 4-H club adviser. Survivors include her son, Vernon H. (Carol) of Willard; daughter, Juanita (James) Tousley of Cleveland; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Her husband, Dennis, whom she married May 1, 1932, died Nov. 22, 1990. A daughter, Evelyn Smith, died in 1982. A brother, Lawrence Page, also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Robert Ludwig officiating. Roland Marcy Jr., 55
MANTUA - Roland J. Marcy Jr., 55, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at his home following a year-long illness due to cancer. Born Sept. 30, 1945, in Cleveland, he was the son of Roland J. and Catherine (Mauk) Marcy Sr. He had lived in Mantua since 1978. Mr. Marcy was employed in sales and the accounting department for TRW in Cleveland. He also had worked in the accounting department for Ferro Corp. in Bedford and had worked for Michelin Tire Co. and as a regional sales representative for I.T.L. based in Wisconsin. He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid golfer and dart player. He was a graduate of the University of Dayton. Survivors include his son, R.J. (Laurie) of Garrettsville; daughter, Kristen (Dan) Pressner of Dallas; three grandchildren; brother, Raymond (Loreen) of Mequon, Wis.; sisters, Marilyn (Rodger) Locher of Chardon, Dianne (Frank) Sever of Kings Mountain, N.C. and Marilou Rotach of Charlotte, N.C.; and former wife, Ann Marcy of Shalersville. A daughter, Michele M., died June 1, 1987. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where a prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Thursday followed by services at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua, with the Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township. Memorials can be made to charity.

DeWayne Altman, 77
Former Aurora resident DeWayne Earl Altman, 77, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights from complications of prostate cancer. Born Jan. 21, 1924, in Dearborn, Mich., he was the son of William and Bernadine (Nearhood) Altman. Formerly of Orange Village, he most recently resided in Parma. Mr. Altman was a machinist and grinder for Stock Equipment in Bainbridge Township for 24 years until he retired in 1992. He logged 20 years of service to Volunteers of America in Aurora. He enjoyed bowling and watching baseball. Survivors include his sons, Thomas of Parma and Dennis (Sue) of Aurora; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be heldfrom 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kindrich-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Emma May, 86
Emma E. May, 86, of Silver Oaks Drive in Kent, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Stow Glen Retirement Center. Born Nov. 15, 1914, in New Castle, Ind., she was the daughter of John and Mary (Nicholson) Holtzclaw. She resided in New Castle prior to moving to Kent. Mrs. May had worked in a clothing store in New Castle. Survivors include her son, Eric of Kent; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, Harry, died previously. Visitation will be at noon Tuesday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Kathleen McKenna officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Roy Franklin, 74
Former Ravenna resident Roy A. Franklin, 74, died Friday, July 13, 2001 at the Phoenix Nursing Home in Phoenix, Ariz. Born April 9, 1927, in Andalusia, Ala., he was the son of Robert and Eva (Sedberry) Franklin. Mr. Franklin lived in Andalusia, Ala. before moving to Phoenix. Survivors include his wife, Doris (Franklin); daughter, Marie Long of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren; brothers, Cecil of Pensacola, Fla. and Phillip of Andalusia, Ala.; sisters, Lillian Tart and Sybil Spencer, both of Andalusia, Ala., Nell Palmer and Jo Anne Britt, both of Pensacola, Fla. There will be no local calling hours or services. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Andalusia, Ala.

Bernice Conigliaro
HIRAM - Bernice Conigliaro, 56, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at her home following a brief illness. Born July 29, 1944, in Brookyln, N.Y., she was the daughter of Edward and Bernice (Zomerfeld) Romeiko. She was a lifetime Hiram resident. Mrs. Conigliaro worked in the shipping department of Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics in Mantua. She enjoyed remodeling, decorating, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her son, Anthony of Bay Shore, N.Y.; daughter, Joyce Plesotis of Hiram; five grandchildren; and mother, Bernice Romeiko of Hiram. Her father died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua, with the Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Shalersville.
