Guido Cipriano
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna for Guido Cipriano, the 76-year-old restaurateur and caterer who died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a lengthy illness. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home at 703 East Main St., Ravenna. It was probably close to impossible to have lived or worked in Ravenna and other parts of Portage County without having eaten a meal prepared by Mr. Cipriano. That's because he and his business were such a popular catering choice. Be it a wedding reception, political function, school or athletic event, a golf outing or office outing or other social event, if it was held in somewhere in Portage County - particularly in Ravenna - the food and service was often supplied by Mr. Cipriano and his business. An outgoing and friendly man, Mr. Cipriano founded his catering and restaurant business in 1966, locating it in Ravenna, where he lived all his life. Eventually, Guido's Pizza and Catering came to be located at its present address on West Main Street where, especially at mid-day, it has been a popular business lunch site. In the 1970s, Mr. Cipriano branched out and opened Guido's Top of the Inn at the University Inn in Kent. It was popular with the dinner crowd, but the expense of operating the restaurant caused Mr. Cipriano to scale back and focus on his Ravenna operations. Twenty years ago, he also started his annual golf outing, inviting regular customers and friends to play. The event continues to this day. When it was staged several weeks ago, Mr. Cipriano, though ill, managed to preside. In addition to his business activities, Mr. Cipriano played an active role in the community. He served on the Ravenna zoning board, the Ravenna Schools Blue Ribbon Committee, was a member of the Ravenna Elks and a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. He was U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Cipriano was born in Ravenna on March 15, 1925, the son of Sylvester and Beatrice (Sarrocco) Cipriano. Survivors include his sons, Vincent, Sylvester "Chip" (Kem), Sam (Karen), Mike and Joe, all of Ravenna, and Steve (Colleen) of Akron; daughters, Patricia Cipriano of Strongsville, Tina (Larry) Hutchinson and Marianne (Kurtis) Crislip, both of Rootstown, and Lorrie (Tommy) Yates of Sylvania; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paschal Cipriano of Ravenna. His wife, Vivian, died in 1995. Besides his parents, brothers, Sabatino (Sam) and Peter, and sisters, Matilda Cariglio, Madeline Damicone, Mary D'Amicone and Clara Cipriano, died previously. Entombment will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum in Ravenna. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
