Dorothy Toth
MANTUA - Dorothy E. Toth, 81, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at her home after a long illness.
Born March 8, 1917 in Akron, she was the daughter of Henry and Clara (Elliott) Barnett. She had been a Mantua resident since 1957.
Mrs. Toth retired in 1982 from Mantaline Corp., where she had been a cost accountant since 1965.
An avid reader and an animal lover, she also enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her son, Ralph E. (Ann) Dumont, Jr. of Mentor; daughters, Dorothy C. Kobus of Houston, Texas, Laura L. (Harvey Dean) McGarry of Allentown, Pa.; and Nancy C. Dumont of Mantua, with whom she shared her home; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, John Barnett of Coeburn, Va.; and sister, Karolyn Miller of Mantua. Her first husband, Ralph E. Dumont, died in 1961. Her second husband, Frank A. Toth, died in 1967. Four brothers and one sister also died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Will Stackhouse officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua.
George Wallace
MANTUA - George F. Wallace, Sr., 65, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born March 24, 1933 in Cleveland, he was the son of Fred and Blanche (Smith) Wallace. He had lived in the Mantua-Streetsboro area for 15 years.
Mr. Wallace was a maintenance worker. He retired from Collins, Rimer & Gordon architectural firm in Cleveland.
He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Streetsboro.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, to whom he was married 18 years; three sons; four daughters; four stepchildren; one sister; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One brother and one sister died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall in Streetsboro. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel.
Maxine Darrah
STOW - Maxene Dell Darrah, 87, of Kent Road, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Hospice Care Center in Copley.
Born May 15, 1911 in West Mansfield, she was the daughter of Richard P. and Gertrude (McCulloch) Moore. A Stow resident since 1969, she was a graduate of Kent State High School and Kent State University.
Mrs. Darrah and her husband, Russell, co-founded Mac Allied Tools Corporation (Matco) in September 1946.
She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Thenus and Twin Lakes Country Club. She was a friend and benefactor to Akron City Hospital, Rockynol, Akron Zoological Park, Hospice Care Center and other organizations benefiting children and the elderly.
Survivors include her nieces, Vivian (William) Fellows of Mentor; Helen (Richard) Thomas of Glencoe, Ill. and Elizabeth Gombert of Cuyahoga Falls. Her husband, Russell D., died March 17, 1969. Her brother, Frank Moore, and sister, Margaret Miller, died previously.
Visitation will will be held from 1 p.m. until services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent, with the Rev. Donald Engle officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Melva Bowen
GARRETTSVILLE - Melva M. Bowen, 87, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a brief illness.
Born March 29, 1911, in Lafayette, she was the daughter of Melvin and Bessie (Sheldon) Halliwill. She had lived in Garrettsville since 1941.
Mrs. Bowen was a homemaker. She worked for several years in the office of Baxter Fuel Co.
She was a member of Garrettsville United Methodist Church, where she served as financial secretary and taught Sunday School in the 1950's. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, Paul, whom she married Feb. 8, 1930; sons, Dr. Richard R. of Grand Island, Neb., and Thomas K. of Westerville; daughters, Phyllis Ann Bailey of Lordstown, Jean E. Poole of Seattle, Wash., and Barbara E. Wilkie of Akron; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene of Wellington; and sister, Jeanette Lancial of Berkley, Mich. Her sisters, Miriam Lute and Dorothy Steffee, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 5:30 p.m., and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Garrettsville.
Donald Smith
HIRAM - Donald C. Smith, 61, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after an apparent heart attack.
Born Feb. 22, 1937 in The Congo, Africa, he was the son of Everton and Elizabeth (Baker) Smith. He was a life resident of Hiram.
Mr. Smith was a warehouse worker at Warren Tool Group in Garrettsville from 1982 until he retired in 1995.
Active in the Hiram area for most of his life, was a member of Hiram Christian Church and served as scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop No. 61 of the church for more than 12 years. He also was a former Little League baseball coach. He was a member of the Hiram Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.
He was a trustee and treasurer of the Ohio Museum of Transportation, a historical society of mass transit including buses and trolleys.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Krueger); sons, Richard (Kim) of Kent, Donald W. (Jennifer) of DeSoto, Iowa, and David (Brenda) of Hiram; daughters, Sherrie Iannaggi of Hiram, Diane (Alan) Fox of Solon and Rebecca Smith of Hiram; 21 grandchildren; brothers, Bryce of Holden, Maine, and Lyle of Naperville, Ill.; and sister, Shirley Vance of Filer, Idaho.

Orrin Lau
AURORA - Orrin F. Lau, 85, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Industrial First Inc., died Sunday, July 19, 1998 at his home.
Born July 25, 1914 in Toledo, he was the son of Ernest and Christian Lau.
Mr. Lau joined Industrial First in 1946, guiding a variety of projects, including construction of the dome at Park Synagogue, the reconstruction of the 44-inch mill at LTV, the structural steel and stone facing of the Ameritrust Building.
He graduated from Ohio State University in 1936, earned his registration as a professional engineer, and did further engineering studies at Case Institute of Technology in 1941-42.
In 1983, he was inducted into the Cleveland Engineering Society's Construction Industry Hall of Fame, a tribute for his contributions to the construction industry and the Cleveland community.
He was a member and president of the Solon Board of Education from 1956 through 1969. In 1969, he joined the board of Doctors Hospital where he led the move of the institution to Mayfield Heights and its renaming to Hillcrest Hospital. He served Hillcrest until 1980 as chairman of the board, chairman of the executive committee and chairman of the building committee.
He also served as chairman of the Ohio State University Development Fund in Cuyahoga County, co-chairman of the board of trustees of The Community Church of Aurora, and a member of the advisory committee for the Boys Clubs of Cleveland, among other organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Jean (Scott), whom he married 58 years ago; son, Scott (Lois) of Richmond, Va., and Stephen (Bonnie) of Shaker Heights; daughter, Cathrina (Jean PIerre) Sevos of Hong Kong; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held. Arrangements are being handled by the Kindrich-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home.

Helen Shaw Avery
Helen Shaw Avery, 67, of Cuyahoga Falls, died of cancer Friday, July 18, 1998r.
Born Oct. 23, 1930 in Wilkinsburg, Pa., she had lived in the Akron area the past 32 years.
Mrs. Avery was a volunteer for the Akron Civic Theater for the past six years.
Survivors include her son, Nicholas (Deborah) Avery of Haverhill, Mass.; daughter, Elise (Charlie) Avery of Garrettsville; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Portage Trail Village, 45 Cathedral Lane, Cuyahoga Falls. Cremation has taken place and the ashes will be scattered in Pennsylvania.

Stephen Rapovy
Stephen T. Rapovy, 78, of Newton-Bailey Road, Warren, died Monday, July 20, 1998 at his home.
Born Nov. 1, 1919, in Youngstown, he was the son of Frank and Tekla Rapovy.
Mr. Rapovy retired from the U.S. Postal Service of Youngstown and Boardman in 1985 after 35 years of service.
He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Newton Falls. He enjoyed electronics and was an antique collector.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Mark (Jennie) Sharp of Warren, with whom he resided.; two grandchildren; brothers, John of Austintown and Pete of Youngstown.; and sisters, Mary Pazlisen of Austintown and Ann Loychik of Warren.

Dominick Sullivan
Dominick Joseph Sullivan, the infant son of Patrick L. and Catherine M. (Polumbo) Sullivan, died Sunday, July 19, 1998 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his sister, Angela Marie Sullivan; grandparents, Linda Sullivan of Streetsboro, Robert and Elaine Sullivan of Ravenna; Mrs. and Mrs. Peter (Bonnie) Polumbo of Rootstown; and great-grandparents, Betty Lee of Streetsboro, Bob and Connie Sullivan of Frankfort, and Dorothy Kenward of Ravenna.
There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at Homeland Cemetery of Rootstown, with the Rev. Steve Chapman officiating. Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, is handling arrangments.
Ernest Guarneri
Ernest "Anthony" Guarneri, 56, of Kent, died Sunday, July 19, 1998.
Born Nov.r 15, 1941, in Bronyx, N.Y., he was the son of Salvatore and Lucy (Dilillo) Guarneri.
Survivors include his brothers, Joseph and Sal of Portage County; and his sister Rose of N.Y.

Pamela Pierce
A memorial service for Pamela Taylor Pierce, a former Kent resident, will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, in the sanctuary of the United Methodist Church of Kent. A reception for family and friends will follow immediately after the service in Pierson Hall.
Mrs. Pierce, 42, died of cancer July 2, 1998 at her home in Anchorage, Alaska.
Agnes Eiben
MANTUA TOWNSHIP - Agnes Eiben, 83, died Monday, July 20, 1998 at Heather Knoll Nursing Home in Tallmadge after a period of failing health.
Born Jan. 23, 1915 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Antonio and Mary (Jet) Gallic. She was a Mantua area resident for 47 years.
Mrs. Eiben was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua.
Survivors include her sons, Ronald and Leslie, both of Mantua; daughters, Mrs. Dolores (Daniel) Dawson of Tallmadge and Mrs. Carol (Dr. David) Haas of Medina; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Edmund, died in 1965. Five brothers and three sisters died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, with servcies to follow at noon at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua, with the Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.

Clifford A. Ballentine
MANTUA TOWNSHIP - Clifford A. Ballentine, 71, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Maplewood Care Center in Streetsboro after several months of failing health.
Born Aug. 31, 1926 in Diamond, he was the son of Lee and Mamie (Hill) Ballentine. A life resident of the Mantua-Shalersville area, he graduated from Aurora High School as salutatorian in 1942.
Mr. Ballentine retired in 1988 from Seaway Foods in Bedford Heights, where he had worked for 20 years as a forklift operator. He also worked on his family farm for many years.
He served the U.S. Army's Airborne Division during World War II.
He enjoyed country music and Big Band music.
Survivors include his sons, James (Maureen) of Mantua, Daniel (Denise) of Ravenna, Scott (Josie) of Mantua and David (Tina) of Ravenna; daughter, Hazelbelle "Sis" Schinke of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; brothers, Lester of Deerfield and Chris of North Olmsted; and sisters, Annabelle Coman of Berlin Center and Betty Romischer of Mentor.

Elmer Dunlavy, 90
Former Kent resident Elmer M. Dunlavy, 90, of Rockford, Ill., died Saturday, July 19, 1998, at P.A. Peterson Home in Rockford following a long illness.
Born July 8, 1908 in Tuscarawas County, he was the son of Samuel and Esther Bertha (Meyer) Dunlavy. He had lived in Kent before moving to Rockford a year ago.
Mr. Dunlavy was a high school teacher at several schools in Ohio.
A graduate of Kent State University, he was a member of the Varsity K Athletic Hall of Game.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kent, Men's Garden Club of Kent and Kent Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his son, Dennis (Cindy) of Ashland; daughters, Dolores (Lee) Figland of Haddenfield, N.J. and Marilyn (Jerry) Kopp of Rockford; stepsons, Paul Muckler of Charlotte, N.C., and Gordon Muckler of Chicago; stepdaughter Sue Savage of Stow; five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. His wives, Helen G. (Danforth), whom he married in 1938, and Beatrice (Muckler), whom he married in 1975, died previously.

Margaret Pejeau, 95
Margaret I. Pejeau (Rosenberry), 95, the mother of Richard Pejeau of Hiram, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at her home at Laurel Lake Retirement Village in Hudson.
Born Nov. 15, 1902 in Massillon, she had lived in Euclid before moving to Hudson eight years ago.
Mrs. Pejeau was a secretary with General Electric at Nela Park.
She was a longtime volunteer at Meridia Euclid Hospital and Euclid Kiwanis Ki-Wives.
In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, Susan, survivors include two grandchildren. Her husband, Arthur W., died in 1997. A brother, Donald E. Rosenberry, died previously.

Ann Chambers, 86
Ann N. Chambers, 86, of East Elm Street, Kent, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born May 12, 1912 in Ukraine, she was the daughter of John and Mary Nakanezne.
During World War II, Mrs. Chambers worked as a machinist operating a turret lathe.
She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ann (William) McGrath of Edinburg. Her husband, Clifford A., to whom she had been married to for 49 1/2 years, died in 1995. Her parents and stepmother, Edna, died previously.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where services will follow at 11 a.m.m with the Rev. Joseph Ruggieri officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Richard Chappell, 66
Richard G. Chappell, 66, of New Castle Pa., a former Ravenna resident, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Born Feb. 16, 1932 in Ravenna, he was the son of Walter "Bill" and Mildred (Richardson) Chappell. He was a graduate of Ravenna High School, Kent State University and the University of Maryland.
Mr. Chappell was an agent with the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. He also had served as executive director of the Easter Seals Rehab Center.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include wife, Janet I. (Cernohorsky), to whom he was married 39 years; sons, David of Albany, N.Y. and Dale of New Castle, Pa.; daughter, Mrs. John (Cheryl) Cowher of Ft. Washington, Md.; two grandchildren; mother, Mildred of Ravenna; and twin brother, Gerald, of Stevens Point, Wis.

OWEN D. BUCK
Owen D. (Buck) Young, 65, formerly of Newton Falls, died Thursday, July 23, 1998 at the Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna of heart failure.
Born Jan. 21, 1933, in Byesville, Ohio, he was the son of Joseph C. and Effie C. (Cale) Young. He had lived in Zephyrhills, Fla. since 1993.
Mr. Young worked for Ohio Edison as a lineman and also was a signal man for the Erie Lackawana Railroad.
A U.S. Army veteran, he was a past commander and life member of the Newton Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3332, Newton Falls Army-Navy, Warren Am-Vets, past commander of the Windham American Legion and life member of the Fraternal Order of Cooties. He also was a life member of Moose Lodge No. 2276 in Zephyrhills, Fla., the Moose Legion in Sipres, Fla. and a member of the Naus Club.
Survivors include his sons, Harold O. of Ravenna and Calvin T. of Natick, Md.; daughter, Mrs. Angelo (Nancy) Pagano of Newton Falls; six grandchildren; brother, Calvin C. of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and sisters, Mrs. Betty Price of Stratford, Mrs. Viola (Boots) Mullen of Leavittsburg, Mrs. Mary Hall of Newton Falls, Mrs. Roland (Virginia) Shanower of Warren, Mrs. Andrew (Sarah) Kate Zigmont of Warren, Mrs. Elizabeth Woodyard of Leavittsburg, and Mrs. Carl (Lilly Mae) Greathouse of Warren. His brothers, Glen I. and Owen C. died previously.

EARL R. ALMY
Earl R. Almy, 73, of Auburn Township, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Metro Health Care Center in Cleveland, where he had been transported by helicopter following a tractor fire accident at his family farm on July 14.
Born March 12, 1925 on the Auburn Township farm, he was the son of Charles and Edith (Buchwald) Almy. He had lived at the farm his entire life.
In addition to farming, Mr. Almy was formerly employed at Chadwick Potato Farms and Sayre Farms, both in the Mantua area, at Johnson Plastics in Auburn Township as a security guard and at Speed Selector in Auburn Township. He had worked as a grinder at High Temperature Systems in Chagrin Falls since 1990.
Survivors include his wife Ivy Martina "Marty" (Lockhart) Almy, to whom he was married 38 years; and brother, Burt (Betty) of Mantua. His brothers, Fred, Vern, George and Paul, and sister, Cora, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 p.m. until services begin at 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, with Robert Galloway officiating. Cremation will follow.

Rev. Tracy Lewis
The Rev. Tracy Sage Lewis, 99, of 05212 Eagle's Nest Road, Fruitland, Fla., former pastor of Charlestown Methodist Church, died Monday, July 20, 1990, at his home.
A native of Portage County, Rev. Lewis was pastor at Charlestown Methodist Church from 1955 until 1962, then was associate pastor ofg First Methodist Church of Ravenna until he retired in 1964.
Until his health failed recently, he was serving as the visitation minister with the Christ United Methodist Church of Leesburg, Fla., where he was a member of the retired ministers association.
Survivors include his wife, Marion D.; son, John of Pueblo West, Colo.; daughter, Josephine Marie Calvin of New Concord; stepson, Richard Powell of Palmetto, Fla.; stepdaughters, Yvonne Gilyard of Bantam, Conn. and Lynn Klemesrud of North Arlington, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
