James E. Poland
James E. Poland IV, a Ravenna attorney since 1963 and an acting Portage County Municipal Court judge, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, after a lengthy illness. He was 72. Reared in Cincinnati, Mr. Poland came to Portage County to practice law after becoming acquainted with the area while he was employed in the legal department in land acquisition for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. He decided to move his growing family to the Ravenna area when he joined the law firm of Loomis and Jones, which later expanded and was renamed Loomis, Jones, Poland, Wilson and Griffith, which was one of the county's largest law firms. In recent years, Mr. Poland was joined in his Ravenna law practice by his son, Kevin, who also is Ravenna City Council president. Another son. James E., who lives in Oregon, also is an attorney. He was appointed as an acting judge of the Portage County Municipal Court in January 1997 and enjoyed his time on the bench. Prior to his appointment, he served as an appropriation attorney for Ohio Edison Co. and an attorney for Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. "Jim and I practiced law together when he first came to town," said Portage County Judge Joseph Kainrad. "I first met him when he was practicing with Ohio Edison. We practiced law against each other for a number of years he was a very good lawyer." Attorneys who faced him in court remember him as a strong adversary and dedicated to his clients, said Kainrad, who described Mr. Poland as articulate and serious about representing his clients to the best of his ability. "Jim could be very pleasant when he was having a good time, and he could be very serious about his business," he said. Ravenna attorney Herb Kane also recalled Mr. Poland as a strong competitor. "He was very fierce opposition," he recalled. "He was a highly competent lawyer, he had great integrity. He was a family man and he was close to his church. He was a man of his word. I think he was one of our better lawyers." Attorney Joseph Giulitto of Ravenna said he would remember Mr. Poland as "a very professional lawyer, very loyal to his client and always a gentleman." "He and I had many, many cases against each other. Jim would stand firm. He wouldn't compromise on anything he didn't feel was worth compromise." Attorney Norm Sandvoss, who also chairs the Portage County Republican Central Committee, was with Mr. Poland's firm for nearly a decade, first as an associate and then a junior partner. "Jim was one of my mentors. He taught me a lot about the law. I tried my first jury trial with Jim Poland. Jim was probably the best defense lawyer we had in the county in his prime. He was certainly the toughest adversary I ever had once I left the firm," he said. "He always impressed me as a gentleman, a very spiritual man. I'm sure he went at peace with himself and his family. I think we've lost a great lawyer and I've lost a great friend." Born Feb. 8, 1926 in Cleveland, Mr. Poland was the eldest of six children born to Helen (Burns) and James E. Poland III. He spent most of his childhood in Cincinnati, graduating from St. Xavier High School and attended Xavier University before moving to Cleveland Heights in 1949. Mr. Poland joined the U.S. Army in January, 1951, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division after basic training. After an honorable discharge, he was employed by the U.S. Army as an inspector. After his marriage in February 1952, to Dorothy Ann Callahan, he decided to attend law school. He graduated from Cleveland Marshall School of Law in June1956, passed the bar exam in July and was duly sworn in September. In addition to his law practice, Mr. Poland had a lifelong interest in the Democratic Party which led to his involvement in local politics. He eventually became clerk of council for Ravenna City Council, a post he held for many years in the mid-1960s. He also served as president of the Ravenna Democratic Association and recently retired as a central committeeman of his Franklin Township precinct. His interests were varied. He was an avid traveler, tennis player, hiker (especially in the Swiss Alps) and photographer. Mr. Poland. was a member of the Portage County Bar Association, serving as its president from 1983-84; the Ohio State Bar Association, where he was a member of the Ohio Lawyers Association Committee; member of the American Bar Association, and the Ohio Association of Trial Lawyers.
